Let's play with this terrifying new toy that was sent to me. It's a laser engraver that's supposed to engrave on Paper, Wood, Bamboo, Cloth, Acrylic, Plastic, Leather, Bread, Fruit, Glass, and Ceramic. We'll test many of these and also metals such as aluminum and steel and see if it'll engrave those. Looks like there's currently a deep discount on this laser, as well as a package deal for the accessories: bit.ly/42SK4EC

Hey Brad. Do you think this would work on Cerakoted firearms? Could you try it? I have some ARs that may have to be engraved now unless the new ATF pistol brace rule is shut down. God bless you brother. Glad you’re not in the clink! Court must’ve went well!

Now that was fun! Most people don't 'play' with a laser on line. Try it on plexi reversed, paint the laser cut, then spray the back of the piece with any color you desire! A Brad Plexi face plate!

I've been using the Xtool D1 laser to etch paint off the back of plexiglass. I've got some good looking faceplates made. I'll spray gold on the back side of the acrylic, etch the graphics in reverse, and then fill the etch in with black spray paint from behind.

Edge illuminated acrylic or polycarbonate might be nice as a one piece control panel. Seems like there's a lot of possibilities for this.

The color makes a big difference, for example white will reflect the energy and black will absorb more energy. I use a lot of infrared light to shrink tubing and melt shield ground taps and if I’m working on something black I use hot air because infrared will cause it to burn so when using it on dark materials it’s best to turn the power way down.

Lightscribe cd burners used the same technique but the surface has to be scuffed on certain metals. It would be cool to import your picture and see how that goes.

Thats pretty cool Brad. I have a large 40watt table top unit in storage right now because I dont have any way to vent it outside right now, so havent used in awhile. Here is a good tip for you, I use to make wood stickers with my laser, even made some wood sticker pick guards. You can etch wood veneer but may not be able to cut them out with your small powered unit, but who knows with enough passes, but otherwise will cut with scissors. But the trick is to get a roll of wood veneer that has the 3M sticky side on the back of it already...... your welcome ! :)

You had the right idea when turning down the speed, try turning it down even more and trying aluminum and steel again. Some others said scuffing or sanding also helps, I never used a laser engraver so I don't know. If your power is high enough it will burn through the paint and might cause the underlying steel to rust.

Just ran across your posts and I'm now a subscriber. Regarding the contrast adjustment controls. The contrast setting controls the range of tones between the darkest and the lightest parts of the image. Setting it at 100% is for monochrome, its either black or its not. At 100% the image engraved will be solid black and will give you the sharpest lines. Using a contrast level of 50% is a 50/50 balance of black and white, allowing you to vary the engraving from a light grey to a dark black. You would use this setting when you want to engrave an image with lighter and darker sections such as photo engraving. FYI, images with a range of contrast are typically done on materials, like wood, where the surface will react to differently based on the intensity of the laser, turning darker as the intensity increases.

Mini-CDs have been produced in the eighties for singles, sparing you the need to cut them to size. They never took of because many CD players had a hole in the tray which prevented them to play these, but I guess you can still find them (in thrift stores?) for a dollar or so.

There's a simple solution to that use some of the red double-sided tape by 3M carefully align on the side of the machine. It will stick very well. Make sure you clean it with alcohol first then neatly then tie up the extra slack along the side, so it's not in the way . Then use a power cord, not too heavy.

I am wondering if that cannot be mounted to a CNC or 4 axis layout machine and then programmed to cut larger engravings? might take some initial setup and an adapter built but once its done and you have your base code to sync the wo together any size engraving should be able to be added if its capable of cross compatibility? I guess it might be good for headstock logos?

Brad, 17:10 to see the prevue of photos, you have to make the icons bigger by clicking on the white and blue box near the folder icon with the green arrow pointing up. Edit: just to give you an idea of the power, When I burn an image on Kraft paper with my 35Watt Co2 laser, i engrave at 60MMS at 10% power, Anything more than that ill burn right through it. however, for a small engraver, it's a nice little nifty toy for small engravings. EDIT2 lol word to the wise, NEVER EVER engrave on PVC, that will release toxic hydrogen chloride. Anyways i have been laser engraving for a decade or so with a co2 laser if you have any questions, don't be afraid to reach out, you have my email.
