Great idea! Last July I got a slab of wood that came from a tree trunk, from hobby lobby, I made a ring holder for my Goddaughter and fiance/husband. I put their full names, then 2 strips of rectangles 1 under each name and then roto zipped those rectangles out for their rings to sit in. Thanks Matt and enjoyed the video for its idea's. But true story here. Long story short, moved and at 62 not looking to work framing houses anymore. Have lots of tools (every carpentry tool imaginable and recently bought a D1. Lots of time on my hands and have made a total of 10 stove top covers and 6 cutting boards. You can always try listing on Etsy or Facebook marketplace; with Etsy, the more you sell the more credibility you get with reviews. Best of luck to you!
I've done a lot of last minute cutting board engravings for wedding gifts. People will go by Ollie's (a clearance store) and get one of those 9" x 12" boards and I can put the name on it in about 20 minutes. It's definitely a quick turnover rate. You should try the lasermatic by Roly. Theirs comes with honeycomb bed, full enclosure with exhaust and fully assembled. You’re up and running in 10 minutes and it’s $1399. Cheaper better and has the same power. You can also get an upgrade to 30w if you want. Comes with the rotary tool as well. XTool has some really great machines. I recommend also checking out the S1 which is fully enclosed. I have a few videos on my channel about that machine. Glad it helped.
Have you ever had to Laser engrave a Walking Cane with a badge/ logo motif as it is round and the laser would have to go round the shaft as it is circular, be interested to know.
I have an xTool D1 20W pro. All videos I've watched stated you needed a medium on stainless to etch, ceramark, etc. How did you get the nice color? Can you please give you laser wattage and settings to give us a ballpark place to try on our own?
I ran the pizza cutter on the 20w laser at 100% power 7mm/s. It was a little too slow, so I would say around 10mm/s would be best. No marking spray required on stainless steel. If you’re wanting to do other metals you will require marking spray. Maybe I should make a dedicated video on this?
My wife and I want to start selling items on Etsy, what are some things that we should know about this laser machine? Is there a limit to how many things we could engrave? does it last long time without breaking down
I recommend checking out the xTool S1 laser for another option. It will last longer and is fully enclosed. It’s a great machine that will keep up with your needs. There’s a few videos on my channel on that machine.
Like to know more about your machine , where do we get the best laser machine .. i ran and industrial lasrer burner like to get a smaller one for things like this..thanks
This is great-thank you! Do you have any info on how the ventilation of the xTool works? It just..... goes everywhere in whatever space you're in? There's no body/housing to force it through a duct system of any kind?
They do make an enclosure for this system which will make it better, but they just announced a new laser that is fully enclosed. I’ve been testing it for a couple of months and it is awesome. I have a video coming out soon on it: www.xtool.com/products/xtool-s1-laser-cutter?ref=FCYiXVqZuxgXT&
The problem with some projects that people intend to sell is that the Etsy market is flooded with too many, and at really low prices too. Best to try and sell local, or at least do something unique with the project.
Yeah, good photos/video on Etsy along with personalization is a must to be successful there. I like to sell locally and on my website for most profitability.
On the Tumblr when you say that all they’re doing is burning through the paint to get to the stainless steel underneath and some cases that is accurate because they’re bringing the stainless steel the light however, in some cases they are rich in the stainless steel, the same as you are without the paint Also, there are some sprays you can use when edging an area that will turn the ocean color as well. All at the same time what are you do give him permission that is excellent within this show me information is not completely accurate or was lacking the full information is necessary, keep up the good work as I do enjoy watching what you’re doing and how you’re doing it
Well, at the moment I’m working on a two-story farmhouse. But as far as making stuff goes, it could be anything. I put a video out of making a cornhole board not too long ago. I am heavily involved in the Homesteading community although I’m not really a true Homesteader. I am a maker at heart and and that’s where I want my channels focus to be. I have most of the woodworking equipment. Next step is to buy a drill press.
I just purchased the 20 W version. I was curious can I do cowhide that has little tiny hair on it? I have a potential buyer… but I need to do more research into it. Thanks for your videos
I haven't tried that type of leather, and the thing I would worry about is the hair catching fire. For this type of thing a closed system like the S1 or P2 would probably be best, unless you get the enclosure and flame system for the D1. I have a hard time recommending the D1 since the newer lasers have been coming out with full enclosures at a reasonable price.
I never met a cheap woodcutting board that didn't fall apart the first time someone put it through the dishwasher, dropped it, or just used it regularly, though I do like Acacia as as Teak substitute
Finding the xtool hard to price. Amazon Canada has it for about 1,900. Without knowing anything about the accessories or if I would need them just the accessories add up to around 2k? 4K is what I should expect to pay?
I have a link in the bio of the video that should work for Canada as well. If you’re looking for the 20w, there is a bundle that includes the rotary and attachments needed. That’s a great place to start. The 20w does plenty for most people and you can upgrade the module to 40w or IR module easily in the future if you need. www.xtool.com/?ref=FCYiXVqZuxgXT&
They aren’t actually magnets. They are hold downs with the Two Trees honeycomb. I have a link in the description for the Two Trees honeycomb. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I have to ask, is this engraving the stainless or etching it? I have a project that will require real engraving with enough depth to add epoxy into it for a desired look. I had a local guy say he could engrave it and it was just etched.
I just received my first ever laser so have much to learn! Thank you for the information! Is it rude to ask how you etched the edge of the cutting board with the xtool d1 pro? I have the 20w and cannot figure out how to make it tall enough to etch the edge. Thank you in advance.
When you do customized products on Etsy do you set specific parameters that customers can choose from when it comes customization or do you let them send you whatever they want it to look like?
Most customizations are done through my website. I find Etsy more difficult for things like that because there is a lot of back and forth for customization. Etsy has a metric for response time and I am not a huge fan of that for customization.
This was interesting, and a nice breakdown on the machine itself. I am curious, is there a reason why you shimmed the rotatory attachment at 12:20 ? The bubble level shows the surface to be level on that metal, are the attachment wheels on an angle?
@@VoeltnerWoodworking Nice trick, I haven't seen that one before. Though I guess it makes sense when you think about it and I just couldn't. I commonly see people suggest 3D printing or laser-cutting rings to slide on. That way you create the same circumference on the tumbler top and bottom.
How do you deal with that is created by the laser? I notice that you are cutting without any enclosure in the middle of your shop. My shop is a attached garage below my dining room so the smell would go right upstairs.
There is an enclosure you can buy with exhaust port for ventilation. I highly recommend that for any laser. I have a detached garage and since I do videos I leave mine open for now.
Yes, this was a 20w diode from xTool. I'll have to look for the settings for this one, but best thing to do is get a second piece of similar material and run some material tests. I usually run material tests and keep them for future reference.
I don't because it really depends on a lot of factors. The best thing to do is compare prices among places like Etsy, FB marketplace, etc. Based on your equipment and how long it takes you to complete something you can adjust from there. If I batch produce things I will generally have those products lower than one-of-a-kind type projects and those that take a long time to complete. If your machine is slower than industry standard, unfortunately you can't charge more because it takes you longer. If a set of coasters costs $3 in materials and you can design/engrave in 30 minutes versus another machine that takes 10 minutes, you shouldn't charge more. If the average for a custom set of coasters sells for $25 on Etsy then you should charge around that price. What you lose in time, by something taking longer to complete, you pay for by learning. Think of it like paying to attend a class where you're the teacher. LOL! Next time you'll complete it a bit faster and learn better ways to do it. I hope this helps!
The RA2 rotary works with all sorts of cylindrical objects including the oddly shaped glencairn glasses. Should work great. You’ll want to use a dark tempura paint or something as a marking agent to absorb the light.
Increase power and lower speed to get darker engraving. It’s always good to do some samples for different materials to know which settings are best for each type of material. Hope that helps. 👍
Hi, I have been wanting to buy a laser engraver and cutter for plexiglass. This would be a new journey for me. Is there a small machine you recommend for someone who has never done this before?
You’ll want to make sure it’s laser-friendly acrylic, and I would recommend a CO2 laser if you want to do clear acrylic. Both OMTech and XTool have CO2 lasers I would recommend. I have discount codes for both sites too. It depends on the size of the material you’d want to cut/etch on the machine I would recommend.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking thank you for the recommendations. I enjoy your videos. Very very helpful for people just starting. Great video Matt, are you treating the stainless steel with cmark or anything? I have an xtool and I do not have much success engraving stainless. thank you for any input you may have.
Thanks so much. This was completely untreated. Run it at a very low speed, make sure the surface is free of oils, and you're good to go. You have a 20w?
This will only etch stainless steel effectively without marking spray. I just received the IR module for this and am looking to do some tests with it soon. Will make sure to post a video on that when I run some tests. Thanks for watching.
If you can afford the S1 I would recommend that 100% mostly because of the safety and ease of use. The additional features like curved surfaces and conveyor attachments are great too.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking I see some UT videos that mention cutting clear glass bit it gives no detail like thickness, power speed. Brand or type of lazer Wanted more
@user-be5ng6il4y a 50w CO2 laser is capable of cutting glass. I haven’t done this as I have no need for that, but if you think it would make an interesting video let me know.

Do you have a link for the magnets used to hold down your leather patch? Please and thank you!
They aren’t actually magnets. They are hold downs with the Two Trees honeycomb. I have a link in the description for the Two Trees honeycomb. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
You can't do stainless steel with a C02 can you? I was surprised to see you could do it with a diode. I thought you had to have a Fiber to do metal.
It works well on a diode. Either diode or fiber will work.
I have to ask, is this engraving the stainless or etching it? I have a project that will require real engraving with enough depth to add epoxy into it for a desired look. I had a local guy say he could engrave it and it was just etched.
It's just etching. It won't be deep enough to hold epoxy.
I have always worked with co2 lasers, do you prefer the diode over a co2? The stainless engraving intrigues me, lol.
I like both for different reasons. The CO2 cuts much faster, but the diode is great for metals and small text.
@VoeltnerWoodworking thanks for replying, I appreciate your input.
New video coming out tomorrow on this. 👍🏼
I just received my first ever laser so have much to learn! Thank you for the information! Is it rude to ask how you etched the edge of the cutting board with the xtool d1 pro? I have the 20w and cannot figure out how to make it tall enough to etch the edge. Thank you in advance.
Do you have the risers for it? You could always use 3 of the risers and shim up the remaining corner to make the machine level.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking I have the 8 extra riser pieces. Your way is genius! Thank you!!!!! And thank you for taking the time to respond. 🙂
Absolutely! I always respond to kind comments. :)
Oh it would be cool for you to review the xtool m1!
Thank you! It looks like a great machine.
Are you using the honeycomb and hold downs sold by XTool?
I had a 3rd party honeycomb that I was using. It’s from TwoTrees. I haven’t used the XTool honeycomb because I had this other one.
Thank you! The cup was slightly angled so I shimmed it level. Good eye!
Great video! Can you share the name of the font you used on the sign "grateful"?
Thank you. I can’t remember which one it was, but I get most of my fonts from DesignBundles.net. They have a great selection of fonts.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking Excelent, Thanks!! Really appreciate it!
Sure thing
How do you deal with that is created by the laser? I notice that you are cutting without any enclosure in the middle of your shop. My shop is a attached garage below my dining room so the smell would go right upstairs.
There is an enclosure you can buy with exhaust port for ventilation. I highly recommend that for any laser. I have a detached garage and since I do videos I leave mine open for now.
Great video as always Matt.
Thanks so much, David! I appreciate you.
Nice informative video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Can you share the settings for the pizza spatula thing? Was it a 20w diode?
Yes, this was a 20w diode from xTool. I'll have to look for the settings for this one, but best thing to do is get a second piece of similar material and run some material tests. I usually run material tests and keep them for future reference.
Great Video brother. First time seeing your video. Subscribed now.
Thank you so much! Welcome to the channel. What type of content do you typically look for in a channel?
Do you have a fee chart on how to charge for stuff
Is there some kind of adapter to etch glass? Specifically glencairn whisky glasses
The RA2 rotary works with all sorts of cylindrical objects including the oddly shaped glencairn glasses. Should work great. You’ll want to use a dark tempura paint or something as a marking agent to absorb the light.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking thanks for the quick reply.
Thank you
You're welcome!
How do you get the engraving so dark and black
Increase power and lower speed to get darker engraving. It’s always good to do some samples for different materials to know which settings are best for each type of material. Hope that helps. 👍
Where can I find the cork Coasters viewed in videos at 1:24? Thanks.

Great video, thank you
Thank you!
Trying this as a side hustle, so I did not understand the importance and function of each machine til watching these videos. Thank you , appreciate what you are doing and continue Blessings 🙏 I'm sure I will be bugging you soon 😁
Sure thing. No bother. Glad they were helpful.
Can you tell me what machine you are using
Sure thing. There’s links in the description, but here it is: shorturl.at/tJNV8 (Code: VW10)
Great video! Thank you very much!!! ❤
Thanks for watching!
Matt, does mild steel etch as well as stainless?
This will only etch stainless steel effectively without marking spray. I just received the IR module for this and am looking to do some tests with it soon. Will make sure to post a video on that when I run some tests. Thanks for watching.
would you still go for the d1 pro to start or the s1, currently i dont have an outdoor place with power
If you can afford the S1 I would recommend that 100% mostly because of the safety and ease of use. The additional features like curved surfaces and conveyor attachments are great too.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking thanks again!
Subbed. Great vid 👍
Thank you so much
Great video!
Thanks
such great ideas.
Thank you! Glad it helped.

That's a fun idea!
Which Cnc router is behind you?
That’s the Stepcraft M.1000 CNC.
Great content
Thank you so much!!
Can I cut stained glass for real glass windows or panels w lazer?
Unfortunately you won’t be able to cut glass. It can only etch the glass.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking I see some UT videos that mention cutting clear glass bit it gives no detail like thickness, power speed. Brand or type of lazer
Wanted more
@user-be5ng6il4y a 50w CO2 laser is capable of cutting glass. I haven’t done this as I have no need for that, but if you think it would make an interesting video let me know.
@@VoeltnerWoodworking imagine needing to make multiple windows for a building with similar images, with some center image changes but majority of fill is the same. Cutting by hand would be beyond difficult, could pay for a 40 watt machine on first job compared to a commercial contract shipped from out of state!
I am strongly considering getting a laser to cut and image plywood. Wonder how much more it would cost to upgrade to do limited side huddle glass cutting and etchings?
I tried cutting stained glass on the P2 co2 laser and referenced your question in the video. Give it a watch if you’re interested.

What store is that with all the raw wood products
It’s called Hobby Lobby. Michael’s also has a lot of these types of things if you don’t have a Hobby Lobby nearby.
