Running those saws at 430am? Your neighbors must love you.
I don’t have any close neighbors
@@DieTrying13 Lucky you.
I agree
I GET UP AT THE CRACK OF NOON.
My first video of yours. New subscriber. I love the simplicity of this bench.
I don't use a mask for sanding. I use a shop vacuum with a Dustopper and I use the Diablo Sandnet discs. Maybe not so neighbor-friendly at 5:00am (which I never do) but very little dust. You've got so much more dust in your shop that solving the sanding problem just scratches the surface. A gentle breeze will keep dust in the air just from what is lying around. If a mask is your only solution, I'd be wearing it every second I was in your shop, not just for sanding. Solve your dust collection issue and a mask becomes secondary.
Now, I know that dust collection is way beyond a beginner's pay grade, but even a beginner should start somewhere. Cleaning up regularly is a good place to start. Always a good tip for a beginner.
Cleaning the shop is my biggest problem of all! Hahaha! I have a mini dust collection system but it’s hooked up in my barn to my drum sander. I need to grab a second one and do the shop for sure
I’ve never thought of splinters as cozy.
Hahaha! To each their own, I guess. Hahaha
Totally understand "Cozy", it's the simple pleasures in life we all need to take more time to enjoy! Great simple build, enjoyed.
Great build Nick, as per. Your sleeping pattern is worse then mine, at least you’re making good use of the time, I just lie there watching YT videos 😉. Brilliant to see the channel growing man. Deserves a coffee/beer. Take care J
Thanks so much dude!!! Yeah, I gave up on sleep once we had kids. Haha!
@@DieTrying13 yip, that’s when I gave up on sleep too 😂
A couple recommendations for your shop:
Miter saw station: It worries me how unsafe your setup is, both for you and the wood (i.e., You have Jedi reflexes at catching pieces as you cut them, but Jedi are infamous for losing limbs). I know you think you don't have room, but hear me out bc a miter saw station can be more than just a single-purpose tool. I built mine as a workbench where the middle section is an adjustable shelf. Nothing fancy about it. The shelf sits on some 1x4 pieces that are held onto the legs by 1/4" bolts that I tighten down with those big woodworking knobs,. There are holes in the legs every couple inches so I can move the 1x4 blocks and set the shelf as high/low as I like. The 1x4 pieces have furniture levelers on them (but pointed upward) to fine-tune the height of the shelf. The fact that the shelf has a large vertical range means I can drop other tools into it. The space is only 24" wide, but that will fit the router table, my bandsaw (which is smaller; I realize yours is free-standing), or a lot else (e.g., I built a nichrome wire setup for cutting styrofoam sheets, and it snaps into the table very nicely! Attach a clamp edge, and you can get precise dimensions to use as insulation). I also have a top for the middle section, so it just becomes a solid workbench when I don't have a tool in it. The whole thing is on casters and is the same height as the table saw, so it can be rolled around to serve as an outfeed table.
Positioning squares: I finally invested in a set of these after a simple project I did free-hand came out crooked. Now I'm not sure how I lived without them! Once you have a tool, you find uses for it/them that you'd never think of. For example, my positioning squares are aluminum, and that's a better heat conductor than steel (i.e., 205 W/m K vs. 50.2 W/m K), so they stay in my kitchen when I'm not making, say, birdhouses or whatever calls for right angles. I use them to thaw the salmon I forgot to put in the first last night or to cool off the leftovers before they go in the fridge.
Also, get the kids involved around the shop. Give them age-appropriate things to do, and they'll improve along the way because they'll come up knowing where things are, what the tools and materials are called, etc. A good starting point is just unscrewing hardware in reclaimed materials or starting screws before you follow up with power tools (e.g., have them start the pocket hole screws). I get mine involved with lots of "inbetween" tasks like sorting materials, putting tools away, and generally cleaning up the small stuff. Pretty soon they're recommending alternate ways to tackle a problem bc they saw something on RUclips you didn't have time to look up. (True story. Happens to me several times a week right now until summer vacation ends.)
I love the miter saw station idea. I used to have a stand for it but I sold it and I was planning on putting foldable wings on both sides of my cart I have now. Just haven’t gotten around to it.
I’ll check out those squares!
And the kids are in the shop working with me all the time. I love it so much. I agree, get them involved young. That’s what my dad did for me too. Thanks for the recommendations!
You should make a video. I would just make a table for each tool, that way I don't have to pick them up all the time when I need to run a different machine. My back isn't that great now days. Especially if they just have a 24 inch foot print.

You had me at cozy. Came to your channel for the Halloween stuff, stayed for the vibe, and now I might need to try making some benches.
Nice!!!! I’m actually starting this years Halloween projects now! I’m really excited about one of them. Hoping to have it done and posted in the next 3 weeks!!!
bootjack benches are one of my favorite things to build.
I use the RZ M2 mask in my shop and have a spare for visitors/helpers. I like the bench, it's simple, fast and easy.
I get great results from my RZ mask, its got the metal bar keeping a good connection at the bridge of the nose, as well as outlet ports for your exhale, keeps me seeing clear.
Really enjoyed your video! Especially naming what you’re using for a newbie like me!
Thanks!
They look really good.
Thanks!!!
Sweet. Build benches to break out the flame 🔥 thrower! Yeah brother. Great video. Thanks.
Thanks!!!
The algorithm brought me here. Like your style and honesty more than anything… the non pretentious way you seem. My first video of yours but your shop reminds me of mine. When you gotta move stuff off the table saw so you can use the table saw, no fancy dust collection on the Kreg that keeps moving around while you try to drill the holes. I gotta say though…my ocd kicked in when I saw you without a mask. Anything is better than nothing. They got some at HF that don’t break the bank. Thank you for posting and keeping it real. Subbed.
Thanks dude! You get it. Just a dude with a hobby. As for the mask, I’ve gotten a bunch of recommendations for ones that won’t fog my glasses. Gonna buy a couple and try it out
I love these benches. I love them beeing burned. Nice project😊
Thanks!!!!
Trend mask works great and is relatively inexpensive and comfortable. I use it all over my shop and no fogging.
Thank you for this video! i have just created a small woodworking and tool restoration business and this helps alot with expanding my product line to things beyond coasters and cutting boards.
Awesome!! Good luck!
I always use a P-100 mask, and have worn prescription glasses for decades. Here's the trick for any mask not fogging: Don't tuck the bottom of the glasses up BEHIND the upper edge of the mask, up where they'll be very close to your eyes. You want the glasses to drop down closer to the tip of your nose, RIDING OUT ON TOP of the face of that mask instead, not tucked behind the mask rim near your eyes and fog, so pull those glasses out a little bit toward the end of your nose, farther away from your eyes juuuust a tad bit and let them sit out forward some. No fogging. Great content as usual! 👍
Thanks!!! I’ll try that! 😊
3M anti-fog safety goggles. They are black with a hint of red. I got mine at Lowe's for $36. They work REALLY well.
Nice simple build! I'd suggest drilling a hole at the apex of your v-cut on the legs. That'll prevent any potential splitting of the legs in the future, just in case.
This is really good advice. I’ve never thought of that but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks!!
@asbrand So, you would drill a hole at the top of the apex on the side of the board or into the apex? If on the side would you go through all the way and fill with a dowel, plug, etc.?
@@stateofbasketball8650 - Drill a hole all the way through at the apex...where the two cuts of the V come together. This helps prevent the board splitting in the future. I suppose you could fill it with a dowel. I'd just leave the hole. Doesn't have to be a huge one.

For fog of safety glasses you can always put liquid hand soap on them dry wait for it to fog up then buff them dry works perfect did them with my eye glasses during covid times works like a charm

The RZ M3 mask has been working well for me. Haven't had a problem with my glasses fogging up with them.
Awesome!!! Thank you!!! Gonna look it up right now
I second that! I have used the RZ M3 mask for several years in combination with the "NoCry Safety Glasses" that fit over my prescription glasses. Very comfortable combination.

Hahaha! Me too! And thank you!
There’s a mask I’ve found that I use for everything and it doesn’t fog up my glasses at all. That’s the Miller ML00895 “ half-mask “ made by Miller the welder company. It’s not crazy expensive, has replaceable filter elements, you can get different filtration value elements, besides having adjustable stretchy straps, they come in different sizes to fit your face better and more comfortably. I use it for woodwork, mowing the yard if the John Deere is kicking up a lot of dust, metal work and welding as it fits inside my Miller digital infinity welding hood, and when Covid first started I got the highest filtration value elements and wore it to work if I had to go out in the field for any on-site work, they were so impressed by it they bought a few hundred of them for the Doctors and Nurses( I do IT work for a medical group and was in and out of Dr’s offices ). It and the elements are fairly easy to find, but it’s so much smaller than the standard type. I can’t recommend it enough.
nice. love it
Thanks dude!
I like your videos, great
Thanks!!!
Those are plug cutters. They expose the surface of the wood and dowel rods expose the end grains.

As you all know, a good mass will save your life. I would recommend a organ vapor mask which sounds like overkill, but it’s not. It’s the same mass that a painter would wear to paint a car. I wear it all the time and I also have to wear glasses to do the work that I do. I’m in the Pest Control businessand that type of mask works very good. Home Depot carries them, but you’re probably better off buying one from a professional paint supplier. They’re about 50 bucks give or take a few bucks.
Good video. I use a welding respirator or a full face one so I don't have to worry about glasses
For us, RZ Masks are pretty good. Like ours quite a bit. Ours are the M2, bought them when the M3 just came out. Bought them on sale, and they worked so well saw no reason to get the newer ones.
Posted first part when asked in video. Cool video and nice build.
get a full face impact resistant face shield. I used one for years and it was great.
The RZ mask works really well.i have the new style one that can worn three different ways as far as straps.nso far good luck with my glasses. I have foam gasket glasses but sometimes I feel like that type fogs worse then regular safety glasses. So I was pretty impressed that they didn’t fog with this mask.
Thanks!
Grate last-minute extra vacation pocket money, but really there's so many ways to make money if you have too much money already and don't want to make any and shoot make it a weekend project, you'll be proud of yourself or not🤭 hopefully you would have fun doing the project and practice makes perfect! I enjoyed the video thanks for sharing.
Simple solution. I was having the same fogging problem with the whole mask thing and all. Buy mesh work goggles instead. Or cut large openings on the sides of your goggles. Don't cut yourself
I like the elipse respirator its small and won't fog up your glasses the exhalation valve is down low so you won't be fogging up your glasses plus consider dust collection. I have a small dust collector that I move from machine to machine along with a wet/dry vac. Rockler has a kit that's sometimes on sale with different fittings that will connect to most hand power tools don't let the children breathe in that stuff.
Hey man they turned out great! I’m going to give making a few benches a try to add to my craft fair stockpile 😅
Thanks dude!!! I’ve had good luck selling them!
@@DieTrying13 now was it 125 for the bigger bench? If so how much do you sell the smaller one
@jeremiahbell7496 I put 125 on all three on Facebook but if I were at a craft fair, I’d do 75 on the smaller one. Less I have to lug home! Ha!
@@DieTrying13 I feel you there 😮💨 thanks for the info man keep it up
I just use the standard dusk masks usually but upgrade when painting. Have been using mesh sandpaper too. Might consider that sawdust in the eye is an irritant but eye injuries are more treatable than chronic lung disease.
GVS Eclipse Respirator is P100 rated. I have one and I do not fog up at all.
I like those farmhouse benches too! But I'd be a little worried about running a ^ shape in the legs though. But, I'm sure it's plenty stable
Somebody else on here had mentioned drilling a hole at the point to relieve some tension. I’d never heard of that before but it seems like a good plan
The paste wax is like gold bc Johnson shut down production. Use sparely
Nice build
Good to know!
Just subscribed. Love the simplicity of the project. And not having a dust mask is the least of your problems. I often sand without a dust mask for the same reason (fogging up of glasses). I'd be much more worried about not having a riving knife in your table saw. Kickback can be a b****.
Definitely! I need to put it back on. I’ve had it off for years and I’ve had some kickback moments. Super scary. Also, thanks dude!!!
Are they sturdy enough to safely stand on?
I like it.
Definitely. I still have the one I made about 15-20 years ago. Its entire life has been outside too. Still totally sturdy and built the same way.
You ever been told that you look like Nick Miller from New Girl? Great video by the way.
Yup! Hahaha! My wife has told me that! And thanks!!!
Burning the grain was popular in the 70s. Been there done that. I think distressed paint is more popular today. Not that the burned look isn't a seller. Have you tried various finishes on the benches to compare sales?
Thanks for the video 😊
I have. Not much to report. They all seem pretty average. My 5 year old son saw me burning the first one and thought it was “really cool!!!!” and insisted I do more. Hahaha!
They also sell wipes for your glasses that are anti-fogging. So you can use any protective mask 😷 with your normal glasses. I found them on sale in Walmart just last week 😊
To stop my glasses fogging up during Covid I bought a spray off Amazon that is designed to be used on the inside of a Motorbike helmet/visor. Would probably work a treat on safety glasses.
The timing, years ago I was hoping to do a career change didn't do it ,the money was great the work nasty and monotonous
But i nbought a DeWalt miter saw
And other tools needed for the job. Now semi retired. was looking to make a copy of a table i saw at a coffee shop then i came across the video . Thanks for the idea
I need a side hustle or projects i can sell
✌️
Awesome!!! Enjoy semi retirement!!!!
Get that 3m full face respirator hood thing. Exoensive, but invaluable.
I like my RZ MASK fits well and has filters that are replaceable
Definitely going to grab one! Thank you!
I WANT A FLAMETHROWER!!! 😂
They’re real fun
I recommend the RZ dust masks. I wear glasses, and they don't fog up with the RZ masks, not even here in humid Texas. As for the benches, I liked them but think that they would look better and sell better if you didn't char them so much. Also, if they start to sit in your barn, drop the price and have them move on. As the saying goes, a bird in the hand gathers no moss.
Thanks dude! I was going to do three different finishes but my son insisted that I burn them all! Hahaha! And I’ll definitely lower the prices as the weeks go by. I have a craft fair next month and if they don’t go, time to drop the price. Get rid of them quick! Haha!
I put a large floor fan behind the sanding pointed out the shop doors. While I'm sanding it seems like I'm in a mild wind tunnel. Don't know if it works, but I'm 83 and have been doing it this way for a long time. Not short of breath so is it working? Thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing more.
That’s what my dad does too. I’m going to have to set something like that up! Thanks!
We have RZ Masks. Both my husband and I wear glasses and these do not fog them up.
Thanks!!!

I actually bought a full face shield last week.

Great project. I'm just starting with Shou Sugi Ban and find the wire brushing very unappealing. I see you use a sander. What grit did you use on that?
Thanks! 120 and 180 or whatever I have left laying around! Hahaha! When it comes to working with reclaimed boards or rough cut boards, that sanding disk on my angle grinder is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. I have to buy a new one every 6 months or so cause I beat them up but they’re cheap and blast through dirt and grime
