  • HEY ALL! I just received another one of these rations. If anyone knows anyone in the Italian Forces with experience in the field with these please get in touch, or have them get in touch so I can learn any tips or tricks how the guys & gals in the forces really eat this stuff. CHEERS!
    Thanks Lars for hooking me up with this!

    If we could get this menu in our ration line up. It would definitely make it into the Top 10. Hats off to the Italian Ministry of Defense. Thanks Gundog for bringing this to youtube!

      Mooky Mann Rations like this are very comprehensive and seem to have tons of stuff. Kind of why I really like the simplicity of Japanese rations too. Both have their merits. Cheers

    Nice video, but you might want to know that those Amuchina tablets are not really water purification tablets, they're a disinfectant, turns water into it and then you can clean items, fruit and vegetables with it in order to remove the bacteria.
    It is however possible to be used as water purification tablets, but only in an "emergency situation" as written on the instructions, one tablet in 15 liters of water (not 1.5L), as it is noxious if ingested.
    Still have to admit those Wurstel look very tasty!

      Militars usually eat many things, because they have to save energies and gain them if they're tired, so the meal offers many things, so you'll never be tired.
      In Italy we don't eat that much, or we would explode

      Artic ration packs they where the bees knees and ten man rat packs hit the spot with salmon and tins of sweets, now days it’s crap boil in the bag or add water only thing I use water for was brew and with tubes of condensed milk even better, Italian rat packs go some way today of keeping old foods which you eat on daily basis oh the alcoholic cordial was there nip after dinner in evening.

    Nice vid gundog. i have a top tip for cooking in a can if ya wanna try it. Take any wrapping off, bash the side in to make a big dent. When the steam inside begins to push it out, with a cloth give it a shake (to stir) & back over the heat, then agan half way thru. Then when the dents not quite fully out (so the contents doesnt spray out) crack the top, rest a couple of mins then open fully. I've found (usually) it pours out better & hasnt caught as much where direct heat has constantly been. :D

    The chocolate isn't "oxidised", it's just the fat content coming to the surface. It happens to all chocolate after a little while and is harmless.

    • @kinskins100
      @kinskins100 8 лет назад +2

      +claverhouse1 It can be because of oxidation that that happens. It's called blooming. Its mainly caused by heat though.

      An Tran That style of stove is actually not that uncommon a design; I've seen several variations of it over the years in various outdoors-related/ camping gear catalogs. Here's one that turned up on Amazon, for example:
      www.amazon.com/Esbit-Ultralight-Folding-Pocket-Tablets/dp/B001C1UGVO/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1437019814&sr=1-1&keywords=portable+stove+with+fuel+tablets

      Most NATO MREs are better than the American ones. I've tried most of them. They probably changed since I was in, but the French was pretty good. I hear the Japanese have a good MRE too. We would just take them apart and trade the parts with other units. Aussies get vegimite in theirs barf.
      I've heard that the US Army rations are better now than they used to be.

    Good review, mate! So far I've really liked what I've seen from the Italian, French, and German rations which figures because I quite love the cuisine found in each of the respective countries.

    All of these foreign MREs seem to continue to use canned products while USA MREs have moved away from that in part because GIs and Jarheads in the field carry them in their rucks and weight is a consideration. I guess the armies of the rest of the world didn't take that into account in their packaging designs.

    It's more like a up-dated B1 ration than a true M.R.E. Miss the booze ration and dextros tablets. Most E.U stuff and local stuff mix in. Like I say it depends on the military budget. Good video.

    I wonder how much of that menu is thrown away. Or, shared. I'd need a nap after eating each meal of the day.The tooth picks are an add on to my SHTF stash. Dented cans worry me a bit. The Ristora Tube interest me very much. Cheers.

    Hi Gundog, this is the first of your videos for me :)
    I had a tip I wanted to share, but first say that it was kiwi who mentioned you and got me here, so I grinned when I heard you name him.
    Tip:
    Cooking fuel tablets actually work better if you take one and break it up a bit and place the pieces close to each other but not necessarily touching. Think of a Swedish log torch/stove and you get the idea.
    Be good!

      you are welcome.
      if you want to try again italian MRE i suggest you to find the module with the small bottle of cordial.
      anyway, here's the recipe:
      1. Make some coffe. No need to add sugar but if you have cordial add it;
      2. Soak the "biscotto dolce" inside the coffee and put them in a container (a mess tin will do the trick) making a layer;
      3. Cover the cookye layer with condensed milk. At this point you may add chocolate chips if you want;
      4. Do the points 2 and 3 as long as you want or at least as long you run out of ingredients;
      5. Let the thing stay for some time in a cool place;
      6. Enjoy it!
      Another trick that i used to love is to cook the meat inside the sauce left from the 1st course.

    Hey gundog I am envious of you. My grandfather came to America at turn of last century from small town in southern Italy called Piso. It is a coastal town in the " Toe " of Italy in Calabria. I traveled to many countries when I was stationed in West Germany in 70s and 80s but i never got chance to go to Italy.
    Your Army unit must have been selected to field test that Top secret new piece of equipment the US Army came up with then.
    The EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle. As i recall it went through it's field trials initially in Italy.
    I would gladly trade my 80s era MCI meal for this Iutalian MRE, it looks awesome.
    thanks

      Bill23799 I was pretty lucky when stationed over there. I was on a Bundeswehr Heer Kaserne and we got free train tickets within the FRG. We drove to Venice for a long 4 day weekend. Was great till I got majorly sunburned on Ledo!

    • @Bill23799
      @Bill23799 9 лет назад

      wow i bet that was great. We had a German Kserne down the road from River's Barracks in Giessen where i was. On organization day we would invite our comrades ( Rads ) from down the road to join us. They absolutely kicked our butts in soccer ( futbol ) haha . Of course we beat them handily in Basketball. volleyball was up for grabs. Neat thing was Bundeswehr unit also setup a army field kitchen for the event. Best kartoffle suppe i ever had.

    haha that Tortelinni Pasta looked great. I have a suggestion for you and the other MRE reviewers. Invest in a Pot Gripper like they use for gripping pot off a campfire. It would be neat tool to grab a hot can off stove and hold to pour with. Cost about 5 bucks on amazon i think.
