    Just a protip. With most danish uniforms you often have a chest pocket underneath your jacket. So what you do is you put the Grød/Porridge in that pocket and let it sit there. After some time the porridge will be nice and warm and ready to enjoy a cold winter night in the field. :)

      In the old days, we had that red salami, that was also very good when it had been lying in your pocket all day :)

      Back when we wore Flak Jackets in the Marines, you could take your MRE Main Meal and put it in a pouch on the inside back of your Flak. After a few hours it'd be nice and warm. Saved the heater for more important things. Like coffee. :)

    You where actually pretty much spot on in the meal placement. We would probably have it like this:
    Müesly for breakfast and maybe crackers or a piece of rye bread with cheese spread.
    Rye bread with the spreads and tuna for lunch(it's a stable in Denmark with openfaced rye sandwiches for lunch)
    The pasta for dinner
    The apple porridge for dessert(usually served with milk and/or heavy cream, but it's not possible in a ration ofc)
    And the rest is snacks?

    That type of spreadable cheese is common in civilian life in Sweden, too. It's what I would use to make grilled cheese+tomato sandwiches, ham or bacon optional. Only the cheese would come in either a bigger butter vat type container or in a toothpaste like tube. It Sweden we really like sandwich spreads in tubes.

      What's the difference, and for the better or worse?

    • @24jh42
      @24jh42 8 лет назад +1

      Long time since I was a soldier, so I am pulling this list from memory. It looks like the rations has improved.
      1 500 g. can of food (think there were 10 different types made by Beauvais), 1 pack of freeze dried milk powder, 2 pack of chocolate, 1 pack of coffee, 1 tea, 1 soft drink powder, 1 freeze dried vegetable, 2 packs of sugar, 2 salt, 1 pepper, 5 crackers, 1 can of pate (liver or cod), 1 pack of fruit porridge, 2 pack creme cheese, 10 pieces of rye bread 400 g., 1 pack of salami 6 pieces, 1 pack of mackerel in tomato, 2 packs of marmalade (apricot or blackcurrant), 1 pack tomato soup,1 pack mashed potatoes powder, 1 bar light chocolate, 1 bar dark chocolate, 1 pack margarine.
      - You would heat the can by making a dent and throw it in the fire, when the dent straightened you quickly got it out of the fire before an explosion happened. Having your uniform covered in dark gravy when camping in insect covered forests is not recommended.

      Oh I see...
      Btw, I read in another comment that there is 2 different rations in the Danish military, one for normal conditions, as the one he got, and one for freezing conditions. Maybe they still have your kind, but is just the one for freezing conditions?

    Ok the fact that it's called "Voyager Bread" just makes my brain flash to 1. "Ships biscuits" from the age of sailing ships and because I'm a huge Tolkein fan, he created his Elvish from a nearly dead scandanavian languag, the "Lembas Bread" given to our boys on a long range search and destroy (emphasis on the latter) mission regarding the ring of power

    OrifO is a Denmark company, Gundog! (Hansborggade 30, 6100 Haderslev, Denmark), so of COURSE a Danish ration is going to be packed with (primarily) OrifO, and other danish products. OrifO is to Western European rations as Ameriqual, Sopakco or The Wornick Company is to US Rations.
    One thought - we all know that every soldier eats their rations differently - so there is no right or wrong way of presenting - IMHO.
    Merry Christmas, Gundog!!

    sugar is a nonpolar compound, it does not affect the ph of the stuff u put it in, aside from adding volume.

    People from Europe seem to really enjoy their pates. European rations seem to have food that seem to be more natural than US ones. Like that they have less of those hard to pronounce chemicals. If you don't mind me asking do you have an absolute favorite ration ever and why is it your favorite?????????

    These videos absolutely fascinate me! I love seeing what other countries feed their troops, not to mention it is kind of a snap shot of the norms of that area. To me it is almost a type of socio-political commentary also. But alas I am rambling, I just wanted to ask that you keep making awesome videos and that I watch you, Steve1989, and Kiwidude aLOT. Thank you guys!! :)

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 лет назад +1

      You are welcome! I too see sociological side to it...the cultural thinking, bias, logistics and of course financial aspect/quality of the rations. It does give some insight into what that particular society views its troops. Cheers BL!

      +gundog4314 I am so glad that I was not reading too much into it! I really wish that I could sample some of these myself, after eating so many American issued meals, I think it would be awesome to try something different. I'd recommend a good start is the Lithuanian ration. The can be purchased and shipped for around $20 and they have a Eastern European region flair. My business partner is a former 18B. Give your Dad and Brother my regards. Cheers

      +gundog4314 +gundog4314 +gundog4314 I will have to look into that type of ration pack then. What was the website that I have heard you refer to in your videos again? :) Oh! I wanted to apologize for taking so long to respond, I think I might have tweaked my settings for RUclips incorrectly.
      I will pass on your salutations also to my brother. Dad is no longer with us but I am sure that this thread would tickle him pink! Just out of curiosity what years did your business partner serve? If I may be so nosy that is. :)

    FYI, its not pronounced "mew-suh-lee" but "moo-slee". UE doesn't mean its a "yew-ee" sound, but is just short for a "u" with an Umlaut (the two dots) that make it sound like an "oo" sound. Originally, it would have been written Müsli.

    wonder why the D.O.D. doesn't do 24 hr. packs to, the spoons by the way are corn based plastic that supposed to break down in under a year but who really knows or cares!

    • @keithmoore7390
      @keithmoore7390 8 лет назад

      seems the d.o.d is changing some things at a pace it's hard to keep up with, plus rations are something you tend not to pay much attention to unless your eating them regular! I know I find it a little disconcerting how they seem to be getting a commercial feel to the packaging and some of the lingo you hear being used on some of the shows out there seems to be getting more and more teenage hipster, it makes me nervous for the country's security

    • @keithmoore7390
      @keithmoore7390 8 лет назад

      I haven't had anything to do with m.r.e.'s in 20+years but going by what you see on here they don't look like a 24 would do you for 12

    • @keithmoore7390
      @keithmoore7390 8 лет назад

      not saying they aren't but just looking on here they seem small it might be the angels they're using or me for some reason I have trouble with size on the screen, it just seems to me that the military is getting a little childish from where it was more commercial in packaging I mean did you read the nutritional bull they're printing on the packs? and it seems that they only want hi-tech gear anymore instead of what works I know we need some hi-tech but some of it seems to be hi-tech just to be hi-tech!

  • @veilerk7581

    the cheese thing is "SmørOst" translated to ButterCheese and you put it on bread instead of butter and most people put a good layer of it onto the Rye Bread

    • @JonasRosenven
      @JonasRosenven 8 лет назад +4

      It's not "smør" but "smøre". Smøre is not an object but an action. It is translated to "spread" - the english term for "smøre". Du smører det på brødet. That's the reason it correctly says "cheese spread" on the package.

    Hey man! Love the video! Too bad you didn't get the chicken tika masala, that dish rules in these rations..
    To shed a little light on some of the stuff. The nuts are unsalted, you're supposed to pour half of one packet of salt and mix it yourself. Together with the raisins, the nuts are supposed to be a small mid-snack in between activities. The strawberry porridge is supposed to be eaten as "dessert" and not together with the müesli, but I actually think your option seems more delicious.. Wish I had thought of it during my stay in the army.
    The peach drink is energy drink btw, and reading the nutritional label for it is not a good idea. And you are supposed to eat the paté and cheese spread on rye bread, but not together.

      Some years ago (7? 10?) I read that the Danish soldiers in Afghanistan had severe weight loss problems, because their field rations were too small. They had to borrow food from other soldiers just to be able to continue fighting.
      Presumably the 3400 kcal ration shown here is a newer "boosted" version. Throwing in peanuts, more peanuts and then some peanuts mixed with other nuts was probably part of the solution, as those are very calorie dense.

    Dude.....man okay, here in Denmark most are eating like this, chess +biscut or dark bread, goes hand in hand, pate+ dark bread goes together. the appel you had together with the Müslie, well kinda okay, but it is not ment to eat like that, the appel thing is an dessert , eats normally with milk to it, but in this,,...just alone with spoon or pure it into your mouth simpel. but i guess just as long you get it down, you get full ....Bon Appetit funny videos and keep it up. :) Greetings DK

    I'm curious about the dental health of soldiers who use a lot of these style rations. The high-carbohydrate content is great for energy throughout the day, but between the sweetened drinks, carb-heavy meals, and sweet snacks you'd pretty much be asking for dental caries.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 лет назад +1

      Well, you get dental gum with most rations and everyone carried a toothbrush & paste with them so it was never a problem when I was in. Besides, you didn't really get clean in the field...brushing your teeth several times a day had a cleansing affect to the soul. Cheers

    In my time the patés were feared and i would trade my protein bars for the breakfasts cause i thought they were horrible.

      Liver paté is really what PB&J sandwiches are the americans. - Atleast according to the clichés! :D We love it overhere! It's basicly our national lunch eating. It's good on white bread, and specially on ryebread. (the "rougher" the better, I.E. seeds, darkness etc).. If you get some and like it, try it with sliced cucumber on, or sliced pickled red beads. :) I wish I had the money to send you some. It's cheap and simple. But sometimes the best pleassures are exactly that. :) It's also eye-watering good when baked in an oven for 15 minutes, and served with bacon and mushrooms! Bon appetite! :D

    • @skvakagud
      @skvakagud 8 лет назад

      wavygr it's red beets pickled.. :p sorry I guess I got the word wrong. But just like u get pickles. Pickled eggs or onions or whatever its called. We get it with red beets. :) usually for paté or as a siding amongst other sidings. For scandinavian meatballs fx.. :)

    why would you mix.. the cheese and the pate? The cheese is cream cheese that come with small pieces of ham, shrimp, paprika, herbs, bacon or natural flavors. It is normaly eaten on ryebread by iteself, the same goes for the pata. The peach drink is an energy drink so you dont ad hot water and the same with the muslie. The Muslie is eaten for breakfast, the breads for lunch and the heated meal for diner and all the nuts, reasons end bars are eaten as snacks thru out the day when you need enegry.

    That would be incorrect..dates matter....all that has been measured out by chemists etc... Then what also makes a difference is where the meal goes with you...the lower and closer to the equatorial line...the sooner it will expire...the exception might be altitude...as in cold high very high mountains.

    1) some just call the cheese "melted cheese", I think the one you have there are natural flavor, but there are some different flavors.
    2) I believe most poeple are eating it alone on bread.
    3) I didn't know that the danish army used the heating bag, I find that a bit shocking.

    It migth look grand and like you get alot of stuff in this but usealy about 40-60% of the food gets discarded due to lack of tast/tasting bland or discusting, in my company about 90% of the ppls will thowout the rye bread/the müsly(super nasty tasting), the tuna and vairus other pices. Normaly before going in the field or if we get the chance we will make an expedition the the local Aldi or somthing eaquel to get somthing there is worth eating it is general accepted that the most posetiv thing about this ration in compering to the old F1/F2 ons is that you dont need fire to heat your food and the army proberly is saving money on these allso, but given the option most of us wud swap it in for the older ons or proberly even MREs in a blink of an eye.

    This one doesn't look as good as our old ration, 15 or so years ago..... You got 2 boxes, and a pack of bread.... The bread was nicer, and you got a tube of margarine... Cans of tuna, mackerel, pate, resealable...
    The main food was a in a can, and we'd pool it all together in one big pot for one guy to heat, while the rest set up base..... Also it had nutella, thanks to a comedian turned M.P......
    It was cool to have something comedic in your ration.. :-)

    • @tobiasschneider8081
      @tobiasschneider8081 8 лет назад

      3450 calories is too much for a normal average person daily. Around 2500 for a male and 2000 for a female on average per day.

    • @Drinko76
      @Drinko76 8 лет назад +1

      Tobias Schneider Sure 3450 cal. is above average for most guys. Unless you use up lots of energy through work or sports, then its another matter. Its an adequate amount for a soldier who is very active.
      3450 calories in 3 days, is 1150 on average per day. Thats starvation level.
