Seventeen seconds should definitely be higher up the list, songs like M, play for today and Secrets are so over looked that encompass the very essence of The Cure. Three Imaginary Boys will also remain as one of the greatest early punk albums of all time.

Bloodflowers was my first Cure record, so I might be slightly biased. But I love, love, love that record. Out of this world is amazing. Where the birds always sing is wonderful. Maybe someday has a great almost brit-poppish tone. The last day of summer is such a melancholic masterpiece. There is no if… remains one of my favorite of their‘s. Overall the tone of the record might be quite same-ish. But there whole atmosphere is really coherrent and captivating.
That said Pornography, Whish and The Head on the Door are better records still. Disintegration however… I really like that record but it sounds too 80s to me of you can way so. Very good but it doesn‘t grab me as much as the other mentioned records. I know: blasphemy 😛

I just discovered the Wish album quite recently, having been a fan of the Cure back in the 80's, and feeling that I had a pretty good handle on all that they had produced and knew where the strong stuff in their line up of albums was, and when they were produced. So for me the mid 80's was the time when I thought they were at their absolute pinnacle; and that then made Wish such a nice discovery for me. For me I'd say that Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, was their strongest album, but Wish is such a quintessentially iconic Cure album that I've just loved discovering this album late in the day.

    1. Disintegration - It took years to get into the longer tracks and I agree some of them are a bit too long. But the sound of the album is gorgeous and it contains my most beloved Cure songs.
    2. The Top - The album I got into the Cure and I agree that is ranked way too low in most of the Cure rankings I saw on RUclips. It's a good mixture of their darker with their poppy side.
    3. Faith - My favourite of their post punk trilogy because it sounds so awesome with that deep bass and moody synths.
    4. The Head On The Door - The second album I got into. Same comments as on Disintegration about gems making it up for the weaker tracks.
    5. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - Their white album containing every style they covered on their precious records.
    6. 17 Seconds - Again an album that is ranked way too low in most lists. Their minimalistic approach works very well in my opinion.
    7. Pornography - Never a huge fan of the album because it's a bit too weird for me. Not a hug fan but still a fan.
    8. Wish - Too many songs that do not stand out because I have a "deja entendu" feel about them.
    9. Three Imaginary Boys - A premature Cure but with a lot of yummy hooks in the short compositions.
    10. Wild Mood Swings - The album where Robert Smith lost his golden touch.

Yes! I've been waiting for this one! My ranking constantly changes and your commentary has definitely made me make some changes. Here's what I'm thinking as of now.
    13. The Cure - Most underwhelming for me.
    12. Bloodflowers - Love the last two tracks but that's about it.
    11. 4.13 Dream - Usually I rank this one last but now that I think about it, this album does have more highlights than the previous two.
    10. Three Imaginary Boys - This would definitely be much higher on my list if it was the US version Boys Don't Cry instead.
    9. Seventeen Seconds - Love, love, love the music on "Secrets" but the vocals ultimately make it sound half-baked hence I feel that track and the two instrumentals drag the album down a bit.
    8. Wild Mood Swings - Definitely a bit overlong but I do really love the variety on this album.
    7. The Top - Easily their most underrated album, The Top bridges the gap between Pornography and The Head on the Door. Was friends with Andy Anderson on Facebook before he died. An underrated drummer imho. Miss you, Andy.
    6. Faith - A solid third entry that I definitely feel comfortable putting just before my Top 5. A shame that "Charlotte Sometimes" wasn't included in the original release.
    5. The Head on the Door - Usually I ranked this one in my Top 4 but now I'm inclined to agree there are some chinks in that armor, namely "Close to Me". That song is definitely overrated. Still, Boris Williams was definitely a great addition to the group. Definitely on par with Budgie!
    4. Wish - A bit overlong but still top quality songwriting, musicianship, and singles to boot. Love that you mentioned "Doing the Unstuck". Why oh why did they not release that as a single?
    3. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - A fantastic double album that features some of their greatest hits as well as one other track that I've actually heard a few times on my favorite radio station here in the US: "How Beautiful You Are".
    2. Pornography - Hands down their darkest and most nihilistic album in their discography as evidenced by the opening line: "It doesn't matter if we all die".
    1. Disintegration - What can I say that hasn't already been said about this album? It truly is the band's masterpiece and definitely deserves all the praise it gets.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this ranking. Here's hoping you do Depeche Mode next and maybe somewhere down the line Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Haven’t listened to every album so I’ll just do my top 10 songs
    1. Close To Me
I know you don’t like how it’s whispered but I think that adds a real vulnerability to the song. It’s a song that’s also been there with me, soundtracking the best and worst times of my life.
    2. Lovecats
I love how catchy it is and I’ve had this song play through some of my best days.
    3. Plainsong
It’s Beautiful and depressing. Almost like your transferring into a another world.
    4. Love song
It’s got The Cure’s best lyrics and an amazing sound.
    5. Fascination Street
It may be long but it’s an life changing experience.
This like most songs on this list has been with me since early childhood and it’s had large lasting impression on me.
    6. Friday I’m Love. Not much to say about this one other than it being one of The Cure’s catchiest.
    7. Pictures of You
Amazing song, always loved it. I heard it to many times for it to get a reaction out of my, but it’s such a perfectly written song It’s got to be in my top 10.
    8. Let’s Go To Bed
    Catchy, energetic, really fun.
    9. Primary
A recent favorite my mine. I love the energy, Robert Smith’s vocals on it, all that bass. It’s kinda catchy too.
    10. Distentigration
You can kinda tell what my favorite Cure album is at this point. This is a great way to close off one of the best albums of all time.

I've loved The Cure since about 1985 so just pre-Just Like Heaven and all the attention they got around that time. I'd have to say that I think they have four albums I rank a bit below the rest, my mood would really change my ranking. At least today. Mixed Up is 100% their album I've listened to the most over the last 10 years or so. Great band. So many great songs and so many high points on most of their albums but as you say, several low points. Well, maybe more 'filler' than actual low points.

You killed my heart by stating that Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me doesn’t have any classic Cure songs on it when in fact it has their most classic track. Their most definitive track in my own subjective opinion. “Just Like Heaven” is pure Cure pop perfection. No song sums up the 80s as wonderfully as this track. It’s defined the band and introduced them to generations of new fans. The Cute have suitcases full of hits and amazing songs, but none hit the zeitgeist like Juat Like Heaven. Shameful…

    1. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
    2. Disintegration
    3. Head on the Door
    4. Wish
    5. Pornography
I really like Disintegration even think it is number 2, but my favorite is and always will be Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. I have never understood why this album is so underrated. Other favorites are Head on the Door which is almost a tie for number 2 but the greater running length and consistency of Pornography puts it a bit above, and then Wish and Pornography. These five are great albums in my opinion.

This shade being thrown on Bloodflowers is expected if you don’t recognize or resonate with the themes and instead focus on the sound instead. Because I didn’t for a while starting off as a Cure fan with Disintegration, of all albums, setting the precedent. It is also worth saying that it is quite mood dependent. If you revisit it and are more receptive it is a focused and definitive Cure album that doesn’t pigeonhole their sound in the slightest considering what the goal of the album was. I think it actually expands on the sound and the tone is different which is why I don’t think it’s a carbon copy of Disintegration like you make it out to be. Also I had no idea Dressing Up was hated. It’s one of the better songs on the album so much so that Robert saved it from both the Banshees and the Glove. You could very easily make a copy pasta out of this but regardless I think you should re-examine Bloodflowers and find fulfillment in it.

KMKMKM generally always holds the top spot for me, but the other 6 albums in the top 7 change around often, depending on my mood. Sometimes Wish even creeps higher up, cos it has some of my favourite Cure songs on it (Open, The Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Letter to Elise...), even if it's inconsistent and has too much middling material (I'm excited for the upcoming 30th anniversary deluxe edition, though!) 4:13 Dream isn't in my ranking cos it's the only album of theirs I've never actually owned or heard... probably because for me there was diminishing returns post-Wish and I really didn't care for the s/t at all, so (perhaps unfairly) gave up afterwards...

I definitely don't think wish is inconsistent, yes the happy songs seem out of place at first, but honestly, They flow really well into the album the more you listen to it. Wish is top 3 for me, because there are a lot that you can dissect from it that people haven't really tried noticing yet, and Its honestly one of the cures most well written (even though that's a tough statement to say, because the cure has ALOT of well written pieces of music. Also, when I mean well written, I mean both lyrically and musically. This album has some of the cures most melochonic lead harmonies out of their entire discography, and its a album where Roberts poetic style of writing really shines through. It is an album that is, in my opinion, comparable to Disintegration. Hell, it is disintegration if it was written for the 90's

    • @slothDAMN
      @slothDAMN 8 месяцев назад

@@klaedoe9042 Yeh, perhaps inconsistent was the wrong word. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Wish and think it is very much underrated in their catalogue... I think ultimately it's just that I'm not that much of a fan of 'Friday I'm in Love' - and not even really because it's not a good song, but more because it's been overplayed/overused to such an extent that it's become a bit of a cliche that I can't really comfortably listen to anymore (much like R.E.M.'s 'Everybody Hurts'). Again, a lot of my favourite Cure songs are on Wish, and it's probably the album of theirs I have the most personal connection with as it's the first one of theirs I bought upon release (it was my first actual full length of theirs, in fact - before Wish came out I only had the tape of Standing on a Beach/Staring at the Sea and songs on various artists compilation albums, including Lullaby on a Now 15 tape... 😂). Also, my ranking of their discography (which really is an impossible task anyways!) has changed a bit since I posted my first comment a year or so ago (especially now the deluxe edition has come out) and Wish would now probably be top 5 (and even though it may keep it's current spot, I've learnt to appreciate Bloodflowers more, too!)

I guess everyone experiences albums in different ways. For my part, I discovered The Cure in early 1982, Pornography had not been released yet so their more recent album was Faith which has remained my favourite since. I followed the band's evolution from there. To me their imperial phase is definitely what I'd call their "new wave" (rather than calling it "goth") period that is Seventeen Seconds / Faith /Pornography. I welcomed their pop phase compiled on Japanese Whispers and the following (more psychedelic) album The Top. What followed was more or less the same, albeit less interesting... The Head on the Door and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me coincided with their worldwide success which I think diluted the essence of The Cure and they became less special. Disintegration was a return to form in 1989 and became a blueprint for modern-day The Cure. Wish was a mish-mash of everything that came before but still a good album if a little light compared to the dark sea that is Disintegration... then I think the band lost their way: Bloodflowers, Wild Mood Swings, The Cure and 4:13 Dream are all mediocre records with the odd gem here and there. Finally, Songs of a Lost World shows Smith at the helm of a new majestic phase although it would work perfectly as a closing chapter but I heard there will be another album soon enough which might tarnish the acclaim of this new album. We'll see...

@@tokyochuchu Ah, okay. I guess I get what you mean on a very base level, but the lyrics to 'Open' are WAAAAAAY more poetic and descriptive than any Oasis lyrics, plus I wouldn't say that it's really about a lad's night out at the pub or whatnot (which is more of an Oasis kinda vibe, even though I don't think they ever really had a song about such a thing?) Open is far more introspective than that and the narrator is clearly confused, drunk in an unpleasant way, and most likely suffering from alcoholism and some kind of social anxiety. As well as this, the music is also woozy in a way that, combined with the vocals, almost makes the listener feel the way the narrator is describing - which is something I'm fairly sure Oasis never did with their definitely very meat and potatoes music. This is also just my opinion, of course, but that's how I hear/feel it!

The placings of Seventeen Seconds, Faith & and Pornography are my one surprise, all got played endlessly in the early eighties but they just do not have the same effect on me these days... The Cure are my second favorite band of all time behind the Beatles but ranking the Beatles would be much easier...
13 - The Cure... Underwhelming is definitely the word to describe this but I still like it ... Best tracks ... Before Three, The End Of The World...
12 - 4:13 Dream... This is interchangeable with the last placed album ... Best tracks ... The Only One, Underneath The Stars...
11 - Seventeen Seconds... For me the weakest of the trilogy ... Best tracks ... A Forest, Seventeen Seconds & 'M'...
10 - Bloodflowers... I like this album but for me few standout tracks ... Best tracks ... There Is No If & Maybe Someday...
09 - Faith... I listened to this album relentlessly for weeks around early '82 ... Best tracks ... Primary & The Drowning Man....
08 - Wild Mood Swings ... It is long, too long but I do like the variety and the highs are as good as anything on my top five ... Best tracks ... This Is A Lie, Mint Car & Treasure...
07 - Three Imaginary Boys... I bought the 'Boys Don't Cry' LP around '80/ early '81 and wish I was ranking that (it would rise a couple of places) Jumping Someone Else's Train, Boys Don't Cry & Killing An Arab were all welcome additions ... Best tracks ... Grinding Halt, 10:15 Saturday Night & Fire In Cairo...
06 - Pornography... It's a dark but glorious album ... Best tracks ... One Hundred Years, The Hanging Garden & Cold...
05 - The Top... Together with the compilation Japanese Whispers I thought my love affair with the Cure was over, I hated The Walk & Let's Go To Bed, my flat mate bought both albums but I was not that taken with them... Fortunately The Smiths & Lloyd Cole (Commotions) came along to fill this brief gap... BUT this album has grown on me immensely over recent years ... Best tracks ... Shake Dog Shake, The Caterpillar (I bought the 12" & the single, this will always be one of my all timers) & Bananafishbones...
04 - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me... For me there is not a great deal to separate this & Wish ... Best tracks ... Catch (truly gorgeous), Hot Hot Hot, Why Can't I Be You...
03 - Wish... Best tracks ... Friday I'm In Love (pop perfection), High, To Wish Impossible Things, A Letter To Elise...
02 - The Head On the Door... With this album I fell back in love with the Cure, this time the affair is life long, it's a 5/5 album but it could have been better, the 'In Between Days' 12" had two great tacks 'The Exploding Boy' & 'A Few Hours After This'... 'The Baby Screams' I like but had it been replaced with 'The Exploding Boy' this may have displaced Disintegration ... Best tracks ... In Between Days, Screw & Push (A contender for No. 1 Cure song)... I like Close To Me...
01 - Disintegration... It is a masterpiece in my view, for some reason I can't stand 'Fascination Street' but the rest are perfection ... Best tracks ... Plainsong, Lullaby, Closedown & Pictures Of You (possibly my favourite Cure song)...

This is my current ranking, the rest of the albums I need to give more re-listens to to properly give them a good ranking. I haven't listened to the self titled album or 4:13 dream, but I firmly believe the cure really doesnt have any bad albums. 1 and 2 are really interchangeable, since both I believe are equally masterpieces, it just depends on which one I'm willing to relisten to over and over lmao. 3 and 4 as well, even though thematically they are not the same, however, they share many similarities writing wise. imho Wish is definitely more re-listenable though, it is masterpiece song writing at more digestible state. These four albums could all be the best the cure has to offer, if one or the other didn't exist, which is something I love about the cure, they have more than one masterpiece. Number 5 is also a masterpiece in its own right, however, it falls short only because it doesnt have MORE. I definitely feel like the album could be a few songs longer, I think including The exploding boy and Stop Dead could've helped add more spice to it (it is one of my favorite sounds from the cure, specifically talking about the HOTD era). Number 6 is definitely the most slept on Cure record, It is really fun with great to amazing experimentation, with some great standouts in my opinion, with the least interesting tracks being good but not enough to stand out with the others (basically the last three tracks, they are interesting, however, they don't really hold up with the other 7). Seventeen seconds will always be a fun, great listen. its just too short, with too many in-between "rest time" tracks that I feel aren't really needed when your album only has like 5 real songs. Its basically just an Ep, However some of my favorite bangers are from this album, so I cant complain too much. Its also the first album ive listened to of the cure discography, so its gonna have a higher spot than every album on the rest of the list, even if some may be a bit better

For me they have made only one weak album (4.13 Dream which has 3 or 4 good songs but most of it is very bland to me) and the rest ranges from ok to great

It's hard to rate their discography because some fans are more into the gothic/dark stuff and others into the more pop-sounding records. Some people will watch other people's lists and think "Oh my God how could he rate that record over this or that". Regardless of the style one prefers there is no denying Robert Smith is a genius writer.

TokyoChuchu hates Close To Me so much, he refuses to associate himself with it and calls it Close To You. Haha! I've never understood why Pornography always ranks so high on the list of favorite albums. I've owned this album since the 80s and think I've played it straight through more than a dozen times....mostly because the few songs I really like from it made it into various compilations...but then again, I like Close To Me and A Perfect Girl...and (Kiss Me)x3 is my favorite album by the Cure, so my tastes deviate from the typical fan.

Did I refer to it as Close to You? Ah... That's embarrassing. 🙈 Although, I didn't know The Cure had an album called Hot Hot Hot. 😜 Peas in a pod you and I it seems...

@@tokyochuchu that's hilarious, that's what I get for typing while I was listening to you talk. I think you mentioned the song and I transposed the "Kiss Me" with the "Hot", too funny.

Your accent is insane - it seems like a Brit accent but then you have hard R's... is that an actual dialect over there or have you lived in America a long time or something?

    • @tokyochuchu

I'm British but I have lived in Japan for 18 years teaching American English. It messes with your accent for sure. My English family tell me I sound less and less English with each passing year.

    1. Pornography
    2 . Faith
    3. 17 Seconds
    4. The Top
    5. Three Imaginary Boys
Every album after these had a moment or two but they changed the direction of what they wanted for their fan base. Never Enough was probably their last inspired track. I saw them live in 92 or 93. It was such a disappointment. I lost my love for them after that.
