    A a huge Genesis fan, I listened to this with really high interest. I was borderline shocked how similar it is to my thoughts! I rank SEBTP as top album of all time, and Foxtrot in top 5 too. I actually think that pastoral Englishness works very well for people from other countries too, me being Swedish just an example.I especially appreciate how ATTWT is ranked here, one of the biggest disappointments of my record buying youth lol, but also the high position for their great bounceback album Duke! If anything I would put Nursery Chrymes higher, maybe 3rd, put hey they are all 5 star albums on that level... loved this, subscribed ofc. cheers!

    ROUND 7… 6’s 06… Muse - Black Holes & Revelations (2006)… Some good stuff on here but ultimately not to my taste… 4* 05… Jeff Rosenstock - Worry (2016)… 2016 was a year I struggled with and found hard to populate with anything that I actually liked… This is a good album though!… 4.25* 04… Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (1966)… 4.5*… The kindest thing I can say is that this deserves it mantle as one of the best albums of 1966, if not all time… I think it’s good and I like everything on it, at least to some extent, it even contains one of my favourite songs of all time, it is an obvious choice but ‘God Only Knows’ is simply stunning… I always liked the Beach Boys but I really have to be in the mood for them… 03… The Divine Comedy - Casanova (1996) ... 4.75*… Nothing to add to your summary… 02… David Bowie - Station To Station (1976)… A class album and one of Bowies best … 4.75* 01… XTC - Skylarking (1986)… Hands down my pick for XTC’s best but the race for second is strong… 5* From my first placings… 06… David Bowie - Black Star (2016)… 4.25*… Despite liking the JR album just as much, this still remains my pick but to be honest, this is in my opinion a bad year, at least for me… None of the albums on my 2016 list would see much air time… At just past the halfway point in this exercise it is no surprise that the most recent decade is the least interesting for me… 05… Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out Of This Country (2006)… My favourite album by them… 4.5* 04… The Divine Comedy - Casanova (1996)... I think I put this 2nd on your deep dive… 4.75* 03… ELO - A New World Record… (1976)… Not even close, love this album… 4.75* 02… XTC - Skylarking (1986)… One of my all timers and a very easy winner for 1986… 5*… 01… The Beatles - Revolver (1966)… My favourite album growing up, my favourite of ’66 but occasionally swaps with ‘The White Album’ as my favourite Beatles release of all time… 5* R7… 60’s… 6pts, 80s… 5pts, 70’s… 4pts. 90s… 3pts, 00s… 2pts, , 10s… 1pt, … AFTER R6… 80’s … 30pts, 90’s … 28pts, 70’s… 27pts, 00’s… 19pts, 60’s… 14pts, 10’s… 8pts … RUNNING TOTAL 1st 80’s… 35pts, 2nd 90’s… 31pts, 2nd 70’s… 31pts 4th 00’s… 21pts, 5th 60’s… 20pts, 6th 10’s… 9pts …

    After reading all 70 (at the time of this message) comments & noticing that no one corrected you on misspelling Siouxsie's name 3 times, I feel obliged to do so. It's Siouxsie, not Siouxie. Also at 23:12 "Peepshow" is from 1988, not 1998. My list would be as follows...1--Peepshow 2--The Rapture 3--Through The Looking Glass 4--Tinderbox 5--A Kiss In The Dreamhouse 6--The Scream 7--Hyena 8--Superstition 9--Kaleidoscope 10--Juju 11--Join Hands.

    I personnaly like all their albums. Their music has changed, but we all change. They need to explore other tunes, other themes, other things. You are not the same at 20 than at 30 or 40 and so on. You don't think and feel the same as you go mature, make your own experiences, go through hard times, and you feel you have to share other messages and stories with people.

    Thank you for this awesome and interesting ranking video, where I agreed with a lot, and disagreed with some! :D 47 year old Genesis fan here, who's been a huge fan since I was 14 years old. So yes, that's when We Can't Dance came out. I played that album so much when it first came out, and it was my first real introduction to Genesis, so I do have a weak spot for this album and rate it a bit higher than most others do. Fading Lights is my favourite song on this album, the instrumental section is just fantastic. This should have been the last Genesis album, as this song would have been the perfect ending to their discography. Let's just pretend that Calling All Stations never happened. I am in total agreement with everything you said regarding The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I hear so many people say that 'It' is such a great song, but really? I am glad that I am not the only one who finds it an absolute anti-climax to this brilliant album. I also agree with everything you said about Foxtrot. Selling England could have been my favourite Genesis album, but I absolutely can't stand I Know What I Like. The repeating guitar-riff grates on my nerves, and the repetitive vocal line of the chorus even more so. I don't ever want to hear this song ever again. This is such a shame, because the highlights of Selling England are the highest in Genesis' catalogue for sure. My number one favourite Genesis album is Nursery Cryme. I love all the energy that is so tangible here, clearly by both Phil and Steve being new to the band. I love every single song on this album, even Harlequin and Harold the Barrel, which you mention as weak spots for you. I love every moment of Nursery Cryme to the point that I even rank it above Foxtrot, which comes in as a close second for me on the ranking, but they are so close, they're almost a shared number one for me. It would take up too much space if I were to write about every album, but yes, I know my ranking is a bit unusual. I don't place Duke as highly as most Genesis fans tend to, and I enjoy And Then There Were Three, much more than most. There is something about the smooth sound of Duke that is just too smooth for my taste. I much prefer the live versions of the songs. 15. From Genesis to Revelation 14. Calling All Stations 13. Invisble Touch 12. Duke 11. Abacab 10. Genesis 9. We Can't Dance 8. Wind and Wuthering 7. A Trick of the Tail 6. And Then There Were Three 5. Trespass 4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 3. Selling England by the Pound 2. Foxtrot 1. Nursery Cryme

    Good, fair list. Some corrections: - The leading single from Calling All Stations wasn't the title track, but Congo. - The lyrics to Land Of Confusion weren't written by Phil, but by Mike Rutherford. - Tresspass wasn't written on the road, but, largely, in a cottage provided by the parents of band friend and tour manager Richard MacPhail. What did happen was that - as accounted by Anthony Phillips - the material that was eventually recorded were the songs that had survived on the road, and - as told by Mike Rutherford - these songs were merely recorded the way they were played on the road. - The basis of the riff running through Back In NYC is actually a six string bass guitar put through all kinds of effect pedals (and maybe "Enossification"). Although Banks probably plays along with it in unisono, on keys, but the main thing is, believe it or not, a bass guitar. - The chorus of I Know What I Like was written by Tony Banks, not Peter Gabriel. In fact, Peter is on record saying he was very soon bored to death singing that chorus. Now for my list!: 15. Calling All Stations 14. ...And Then There Were Three 13. From Genesis To Revelation 12. Genesis 11. Invisible Touch 10. Abacab 9. Nursery Cryme 8. We Can't Dance 7. Tresspass 6. A Trick Of The Tail 5. Duke 4. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 3. Wind & Wuthering 2. Foxtrot 1. Selling England By The Pound

    • @tokyochuchu
      @tokyochuchu 4 дня назад

      To be honest I have no idea who wrote the riff. I would obviously assume either Hackett or Rutherford. I believe Gabriel wrote the lyrics for the verses and either Banks or Rutherford wrote the chorus. Which, as Hogweed said, Gabriel didn't like and became tired of performing live.

    • @hogweed1975
      @hogweed1975 4 дня назад

      @@Z-eb Steve came with the riff. He and Phil were constantly jamming on it. From there, the verse part of the song developed, with Pete singing the melody on top. Tony came with the melody of the chorus. Steve tends to claim it all came from him, sometimes. "I talked them into doing Supper's Ready".

Basically it's the prog rock bit that is the turn off, oh!! and Phil Collins, never going to be a fan... Saying that I did buy one single that I still own and adore 'Mama'... The pastoral elements I like somewhat and many of your top albums have their moments, it is just the rock elements that are mostly a turn off, at least for me... Still, I know that musically much of it is top notch, just a shame that alone cannot force me to fall in love... Of the albums that I do know, I concur with your #1 choice... 1:53 - Chuchu Reviews #24: CHALLENGE MODE. 😆 Haha, yeah - Killing Joke has two INCREDIBLY distinct phases - I mean compare this record to something like "Love Like Blood" from 1985 (or "Requiem" that Ste mentioned, if you haven't heard it) - just insanely different and possibly more up your alley... The shift started around 1990 with Extremities... then settled in on Pandemonium, and found a bit more balance on Democracy (probably my 2nd favorite by them - although Hosannas... is gaining since I revisited it over the last couple weeks.) As to why two self-titleds? Reinvention? This album is actually something of an anomaly for the band - Jaz's growling vocals are MUCH more pronounced, where they tend to be a bit buried in the mix on the rest of the records... The ugly clown prophet reared his horrible head just this once - and we did not heed the warning!! 😱 Democracy & the records of the 2010s have a bit more space and balance in the mix... but good lord almighty, their most relentless album is probably 2006's Hosannas from the Basements of Hell, which I revisited preparing for this episode... It sounds like being just outside the inner sanctum of some nefarious cult meeting... 😳 I didn't get a lot of listens in this time around, but... Crowded House - Gravity Stairs: This one started so promisingly, then drifted off into the blurry grass... but I need to give it more listens... The Amazons - How Will I Know...: There were moments that started to pop out along the way, I think this one will elevate given time... The Zutons - Who Killed...: I actually quite liked this! Need more listens, but it was hitting the sweet spot more than I expected... Killing Joke - ST 2003 For "next" time I'll offer another semi-obscurity from the year 2000 - Shifting Skin by ON. ✌

I like Kate but I rarely listen… 5* 03… Pulp - A Different Class (1995)… One of the best albums of the decade… 5* 02… Queen - A Night At The Opera (1985)… It’s the only album by Queen that I love… 5* 01… Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)… I find it difficult with Dylan albums, several that I rank highest I pretty much chop and change order often bar ‘Nashville Skyline’ (probably because it’s the least taxing), this is a really tight top three… 5* From my first placings… 06… Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell (2015)… It’s a nice album and not taxing in any way, sometimes it’s just what you need… A weak year in my opinion… 4.5* 05… Supergrass - Road To Rouen (2005)… This one as grown on me… 4.5* 04… Pulp - A Different Class (1995)… Worthy as one of the best of its era… 5* 03… Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks (1975)… It’s not my favourite Dylan album and the gap between this & Queen was wafer thin … Still not sure if I made the correct decision. so, so close… 5* 02… The Beatles - Rubber Soul (1965)… Even though ‘Drive My Car’ is one of my least favourite Beatles songs ‘Rubber Soul’ it’s up there with their best… It hurts to put this 2nd… 5* 01… The Head On The Door - The Cure (1985)... Until ‘Disintegration’ came along this was my favourite Cure album… Around 85-86 I made many bus journeys between Nottingham and Doncaster, this was often my choice of listening for that journey… 5* R6… 80’s… 6pts, 60’s… 5pts 70s… 4pts, 90’s… 3pts., 00s… 2pts, 10s… 1pt… AFTER R5… 1st 90’s… 25pts 2nd 80’s… 24pts, 3rd 70’s… 23pts, 4th 00’s… 17pts, 5th 60’s… 9pts, 6th 10’s… 7pts … RUNNING TOTAL 1st 80’s… 30pts, 1st 90’s… 28pts, 3rd 70’s… 27pts 4th 00’s… 19pts, 5th 60’s… 14pts, 6th 10’s… 8pts …

    Interesting ranking. Mine would be: 1. We Love Life 2. This is Hardcore 3. His 'n' Hers 4. Different Class 5. Separations 6. Freaks 7. It To me, late Pulp was when they really came into their own. Breaking the rules somewhat, I'd also place the Pulp: Intro compilation album just below This is Hardcore at #3.

    art angels is def her best album! it’s one of those albums where if you get it, you get it. It’s insanely energetic, fun, chaotic, & creative. She rly gets to shine on that record as an artist. It’s so catchy I still have it on repeat years later.

    I wasn’t going to do this deep dive, ‘Art Angels’ was already in the bag due to your upcoming decades for the 5’s… There are so many reasons as to why I find ‘Art Angels’ the least interesting but never do I think that it is bad, it’s just not to my taste, at all… The musical arrangements and instrumentation I find a lot more interesting than the vocal melodies, especially on the first three albums… Vocally at times finding them slightly annoying, grating and distracting, that is not to say that vocal beauty, sometimes in abundance is not present… The problem is all mine, just like heavy rock’ metal & thrash, higher pitched vocals really hurt, instantly bringing on migraine symptoms, sometimes I can push through, sometimes I just can’t… 05… Art Angels (2015)… Laughing and Not Being Normal, California, Life in the Vivid Dream, Butterfly… Dance & pop is not for me but it is decent for what it is… 3.5* 04… Miss Anthropocene (2020)… So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth (Art Mix), My Name Is Dark (Art Mix), Before the Fever… 3.5* 03… Halfaxa (2010)… Devon, My Sister Says The Saddest Things, Favriel… 4* 02… Visions (2011)… Infinite Love without Fulfilment, Oblivion, Visiting Statue, Be a Body, Symphonia IX (My Wait Is U), Know the Way… 4.5* 01… Geidi Primes (2010)… Zoal, Face Dancer, Gambang, Venus in Fleurs, Grisgris… ‘Visions’ & ‘Geidi Primes‘ are both very interesting albums, so many elements that I like, the pop that followed holds no interest at all… 4.5* On the whole I find Grimes to be okay… My preference is definitely towards the first three albums… The most recent two don't do anything for me but they do have their moments… I am pretty positive that two of my favourites: OMD and David Sylvian are both more than aware of her and at times I hear similarities at least musically, it wouldn’t surprise me that they both take some influence from her… Once again, I found this artist (whom I’d never heard of before Art Angels’) surprisingly interesting, on the whole… SONGS 10… Before the Fever 09… Devon 08… California 07… Infinite Love without Fulfilment 06… Visiting Statue 05… Gambang 04… Zoal, Face Dancer 03… Grisgris 02… Oblivion 01… Symphonia IX (My Wait Is U) I’m feeling that I have to caveat my opinions on your channel… Yours is the type of channel that invites both discussion and division, it is set up for both positive and negative comments and I applaud that you accept and deal with any interactions… I would be mortified should I get negative or hurtful comments on mine (I spend many hours compiling and uploading mostly music that I love)… If say, you posted just the songs you love and I was perusing your channel, I would only leave positive comments when I like, if I didn’t like a track or artist I would just simply move on and say nothing… So far in nearly a decade the negative comments on my channels are closer to one than five, for both… I reckon that is either mostly due to, at least on my first channel, my uploads to pretty specific to an era, so only attracting the lovers of that era and secondly only having a limited amount of subs generally reduces the chance of nasties… I don’t wish to appear hard on Grimes, for the most part I enjoyed this deep dive… Rock on!! Chuchu, I applaud you!…

      Dude... I get people straight up calling me a douche pretty much everyday, simply because my opinion doesn't align with theirs. No discussion, no reasoning. Just; "you're a crap RUclipsr douche. You don't know anything about music." I've learnt to tune it out. But you're right, I do invite discussion and dissenting opinions. I'm 100% about subjectivity. My opinion is no more valid than anyone else's. So you never have to be nervous to disagree with me. I am not you. You are not me. It's totally fine to have different opinions and I love hearing about how different people perceive these things. I would humbly suggest falling short of randomly calling me names, though. That just makes the namecaller look like a moron. Which you are definitely not! Although, to be fair, I am occasionally pretty savage in the service of comedy, so maybe I do have to own an occasional insult.😅 😅

And for that spirit of musical exploration, I applaud YOU, sir. A d'off of the proverbial cap. Also... I suggest checking out the Grimes non-album single I Wanna Be Software. That's actually crept up to my favourite of her tracks after the fact.

      @@tokyochuchu 🙂🙂... I did enjoy Grimes... So many elements that I like, I am however sure that my top ten at the very least will make their way into my; "for another day" play lists... I've been called weird for my taste in music my whole life, sometimes by friends, mostly because of my love for 40's & 50's music... I just like music that makes my soul smile, it doesn't have to be complex or clever at all... Each type of music or artist that I like or take to, has a place and space in my life... in the early eighties I had friends and colleagues openly mock my for liking early Cliff Richard and to some extent I understand why, my love for Cliff however does not extend much further than the 70's, I like one song from the last 40 years 'I Cannot Give You My Love' written by and recorded with Barry Gibb... I actually enjoy liking artists that many do not know or have even never heard of: Rick Nelson and David Sylvian are just two of my my most loved examples, Mark Hollis would also fit that scenario, it's like they are just my secret, never being spoiled or diluted by radio overplay... 🙂🙂... Apologies for my ramblings...

      @@ste.6026 My favourite artist of all time is Morrissey. Arguably the most uncool artist on planet Earth these days. During Britpop it was Gene, My Life Story & The Divine Comedy. Those bands were looked down upon by the cool kids with a frenzy. But all the cool kids can do one. I'll take Casanova over Definitely Maybe anyday of any week! I'll also take The Kinks over The Beatles. But at least the Kinks have that revisionist thing going on these days. Now everyone thinks they're cool, but back in the day they were fashionista poison. In a way I guess all that stuff was kinda my own punk rock attitude coming through; "Hey! This is popular! You should listen to this!" No thanks. I'll find my own taxi.
