Hearing The Smiths for the first time in 1983 "Hand in Glove" was mind blowing. Hearing "This Charming Man" was a religious experience and it remains my favourite Smiths song to this day. Had a quick listen to all the lps that I did not know Shed 7 and Heaveniy mainly. Your ratings are very much the same as mine. Happy Christmas and New Year

Drawn to the Deep End & Strangeways, Here We Come are easily my 2 favorites of all these

Nothing can come even close to The Smiths and overall I agree about all the others though personally I think Gene's 'Revelations' is a fantastic album, probably my favorite together with Olympian. It's funny because what you call the weakest tracks are probably my favorite part of the album, 'The Looker' for example is in my Top 5 of Gene songs.🤣but great video, very entertaining.
Shed Seven's last album, by the way, is IMO as good as anything they've ever done before, looking forward to hearing the new one in the new year.

    Round 1…
1… The Smiths - The Smiths 5* … I bought this album on release and still love it to death, I know that it is not on the album but hearing ‘This Charming Man’ for the first time was very special to me… 100pts...
2… Gene - Olympian 4.5* … For me their best but it stood little chance against the Smiths debut… 85pts...
    3… Shed Seven - Change Giver 3.5* … A very good debut… 65pts...
4… Heavenly - Heavenly Vs. Satan 3.5* … Their debut and for myself their best… 55pts
    5… Ordinary Boys - Over The Counter Culture 3*… It’s ok for a debut… 40pts...
    Round 2…
1… The Smiths - Meat Is Murder 5* … Another album that I bought on release and played to oblivion and at one time this would have been my top choice… 100pts...
    2… Shed Seven - A Maximum High 4*… My # 1 pick from their four albums… 80pts...
3… Gene - Drawn To The Deep End 4* … I am more than aware how deeply you feel for this album, it does not affect me the same way, SORRY!!… 70pts...
    4… Ordinary Boys - Brassbound 3*... 50pts...
    5… Heavenly - Le Jardin De Heavenly 2.5*... 35pts...
    Round 3…
1… The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead 5*… I did not buy this album until several years later… 100pts
    2… Gene - Revelations 3.5*... 75pts...
3… Ordinary Boys - How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted In Ten Easy Steps 3*... 60pts...
    4… Shed Seven - Let It Ride 2.5*... 45pts...
5… Heavenly - The Decline And Fall Of Heavenly 2.5*... 35pts...
    Round 4…
1… The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come 5*… The Smiths album I like the least, even still it was easily good enough to win this round…100pts...
    2… Shed Seven - Truth Be Told 3.5... 75pts...
    3… Gene - Libertine 3.5*... 65pts...
    4… Heavenly - Operation Heavenly 3*... 50pts...
    5… Ordinary Boys - The Ordinary Boys 2.5*... 35pts...
Besides the Smiths I have very little affinity with few of these albums, as a musical trend the Britpop era was my last Hoorah!… The best part of my teenage years was the late 70’s and Early eighties… It’s been a few years since I gave the Smiths a decent airing and I am very aware of how my tastes have changed, not just the Smiths but almost all the music I ever loved… On the whole most of the albums bar anything Smiths were new to me, though I had heard plenty by the bigger three, Heavenly on the other hand I knew four or five songs at best and had to listen to jog my memory, that was a bad sign right from the start… The difference between awful and decent is quite vast, should I score something two or less you will know exactly what I think about it, I believe a 2.5 makes it listenable with saving graces… This was an easy win for The Smiths as expected and to be honest no surprises with the rest… Divine Comedy came in bottom place last time but never did I feel that they were vastly inferior to The Cure, Bunnymen or Morrissey, several months later I am a firm fan… This time around there will be no chance of a comeback for The Ordinary Boys or Heavenly, both inhabit a musical space that is a goldilocks zone when it comes to taste but both fail to grab me for various reasons… Before starting this task I did my initial ranking 1… Smiths 2… Gene 3… Shed Seven 4… Ordinary Boys 5… Heavenly… Spot on for once… When at their best both Gene & Shed Seven hit my happy spot just as much as the Smiths… This show was enjoyable, well done for thinking it up, Merry Christmas & have a good New Year…
1… The Smiths … 400 PTS … Nothing that I dislike by them, all timers…
2… Gene … 295 PTS … Like many songs but I’m never going to be their biggest fan…
3… Shed Seven … 285 PTS … much the same sentiment as with Gene…
4… Ordinary Boys … 185 PTS … Never liked them and still don’t…
5… Heavenly … 160 PTS … Being similar to the Smiths is not enough…
The first time that I have given Gene a deep dive, my opinion is that they are really good but I don’t love them…

Wow! That's above and beyond! Thanks Ste. I hope this ride wasn't too rough for you. I had a lot of fun with this one. In a guilty kind of way, this is kind of the most 'me' thing I've ever made on this channel. My unreserved inner geeky self poking his head around the corner...

@@tokyochuchu Finished my list yesterday, you posted earlier than expected so still at home that made things much easier for me... While the Smiths are not my favourite band they are on par with them... There is nothing that I dislike by them, so they were always going to be unassailable... Always liked Gene but never obsessed on them in any way but they are the one band that may grow on me with time... Ordinary Boys have some great songs but just don't activate my pleasure receptors... Heavenly on the other hand, the lead singers voice I just did not care for and some really weak lyrics to boot... I forgive your self indulgence, it's your channel and doing something for yourself is totally justified, I rarely post anything I don't like on mine... I enjoyed this as much as last year's but whether I will end up liking Gene as much as Divine Comedy is another matter... Even though I didn't love all the albums, nothing was awful... Thanks for all your hard work putting together anything Chuchu... All the best and have a good one ...❄️🎄🎄☃️🙂

That should have been "everything Chuchu not anything Chuchu", blaming predictive text this time...

@@ste.6026 I like The Divine Comedy more than Gene too. That wasn't true back in the 90s, but DC has stood the test of time a bit better for me. Also, lyrically Neil Hannon is a few levels above Martin Rossiter (who isn't a bad lyricist himself).

    • @ste.6026

@@tokyochuchu I only love the Divine Comedy because of you, I did like them during Britpop but at that time I preferred Gene... Agree that Hannon is next level as a songwriter though Rossiter is every bit as good as he needs to be, many levels above most of the mainstream... Gene may not be on my all timers list but I have even more respect for them now, again due to you... Britpop is in the past and besides some of the obvious names my own favourites include Cast & Dodgy but they wouldn't be on the list of many, it's all down to taste... At school I was much more interested in Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Elvis than Disco, Ska, Mod, Punk or the post Punk so imagine the stick I got, I remember having an argument at school about how s#*t Gary Numan was and them saying the same of Elvis, by 1979 at 14/15 years old electronic music would swoop me up in a a big way but never Gary Numan, unfortunately I hate his voice... Japan, OMD, Ultravox, John Foxx, The Cure, Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Only Ones were all amongst those that inspired my alter ego musically... These days I mostly spend my time listening to some pretty obscure stuff (to many) from the 50's, it's what I love, it's what soothes me, American songbook type stuff does that too but I have to be in the mood... Sorry for rambling, presently I am drinking coffee looking at presents and wrapping paper and dreading the whole thing... Will you be doing a 2023 list in the near future... All the best, Steve...🎄🙂

Shed Seven has a new album coming out. Their previous Instant Pleasures (2017) contains 6+ decent tracks.
Am looking forward to your '2023 Best of' video.
