Thank you so much for such a quick noise gate filter explanation. I was dragging the close and open thresholds the wrong direction. It now works!!! Thanks again!
excellent, I was looking for how to configure it and everyone was only telling set it to this value and this value and it was not working for me but nobody explains why those values... your explanation was short but exactlly what I was looking for

Andrew, I know this is an old video but needed to ask. My current live stream is in a gymnasium with a lot of bounce from the audio system that goes through the mics (worse than an untreated room). I have found that OBS seems to amplify this making the audio stream sound like an echo chamber at times. Someone told me that this effect could be reduced using the noise gate filter, though I haven't quite figure it out. Any though on some basic settings to reduce this effect? or should I look at a VST plugin to help.
Everyone! If noise gate doesn't work for you, try noise suppression. No configuration is needed and for me it worked perfectly. Hopefully it will work for you too.
Is this a better alternative to noise suppression? I’m currently using noise suppression and when my voice goes too high, it cuts the audio out and sounds choppy.
I experimented with both pretty heavily a couple weeks back. Noise suppression works amazingly well for eliminating pretty much all background noise while keeping the voice crisp and clear. Unfortunately for me, I wanted to be able to hear the keyboard typing and mouse clicks along with my voice, and so I had to revert back to the noise gate method which takes a little more work to balance correctly. If I didn't care about the mouse/keyboard sounds I would definitely be using the noise suppression method instead. As for the problem you are experiencing - You might need to turn the gain down on your mic when recording, because it's easier to turn the volume up later on while editing. If your gain is up too high during the recording process, and any sound goes above 0db, it will be clipped at 0db which will cause distortion. Clipped data cannot be restored after the fact, so a lower recording gain up front is solution. To test this, pay attention to your meters when your voice goes high. Is it landing in the red zone? If so, lower the recording gain.
@@StuartSBull I don't actually do any streaming myself, however the process should be identical. The primary differences between streaming and recording revolve around how much of the data is captured, saved, and transmitted out over the internet (the bit rate), because sending too much data in real time could cause lag / latency for those watching the stream. Example - Compared to a 1080p video, a 4k video has a LOT more data being transmitted, so it looks crisper, but it also requires a better internet connection so it doesn't lag. But the 1080p video can still be seen and heard just fine, it's just not as 'pretty' as the 4k video. Both noise suppression and noise gating have more to do with adjusting the volume of the captured audio, and less to do with the quality of the audio itself. The gate/suppressor are quickly turning the volume up/down to filter out any unwanted noise.
@@StuartSBull Since you are streaming, you might actually find using a Limiter to be helpful. You add it the exact same way as you do the gate in this video (just pick limiter instead of gate). Once you set the threshold the limiter will compress anything that tries to go over the threshold, rather than letting it blow past the threshold and 0b, and get clipped. This would allow you to keep your recording gain up a little higher without having to worry that the occasional shout will blow past 0db.
Man, I was watching an EposVox video about fixing audio and, after realizing I don't have a noise gate, I was like "Of courrrrsee!!" I have one in Discord, and it's a big help (but they don't call it a noise gate, so it slipped my mind to even think to add one to OBS). My mic's always producing some baseline static, so a noise gate's a decent solution. Now I need to figure out the static problem. I may need to replace my mic altogether.
Could you use this to ONLY pick up keyboard typing sounds and eliminate all other background noise/ hum? I need to be able to pick up typing sounds for keyboard reviews!
Yes. If the mic is next to the keyboard and mouse, the typing noises should be quite loud compared to the ~50db background noises. That is, unless you put the mic so far away that the typing is as just quiet as the background noise. In that case the gate would just filter it out as background noise.
Follow the same process, get a reading of the noise level while you are typing and adjust in a similar manner. You may have to adjust the attack, holds and release times, but a god start is to get the level readings while your typing. This will only help while you are not talking, so you will still hear it while talking if the typing isn't quiet enough compared to your talking. You would then need to adjust mic sensitivity and positioning to offset the clicking while talking as well as applying the noise gate.

im sorry but this did not work in the slightest. my background noise was at -55db, so i set my close to -60 and open to -50 and you can still hear things like the keyboard or even me breathing. sorry but this tutorial did not help at all.
You have to adjust the settings to the level of what you are trying to remove. Background may be at -55, but your breathing or keyboard may be registering at -40. You have to adjust to the level that you are trying to remove. Additionally if your breathing is being picked up it, most likely your mic is to close to your mouth, or the sensitivity/gain of the mic needs to be adjusted depending on your setup. I can tell you that while using my phone to measure (near my mouth similar to a headset mic), my office alone is in the 55-60db range for noise, breathing audibly and that value reaches about 75db a quite talk reaches 80-87db. This means if your ambient noise is reaching -55db, breathing would be about 15db above that at -40db, so you would need to set your gate to close around -45 and open around -35. You will have to play with the setting to fine tune it as you need to ensure it turns on when you need it and off when you don't. This also will not remove ambient noise while you are talking.
Straight to the point, with simple instructions and concise explanation. Great tutorial.
Thank you so much! THIS is the perfect example of how tutorials should made - start right away and give clear and easy instructions.

Concise and well explained.
Worked perfect for me, thanks for sharing.
Will this prevent mouse clicks from being picked up? There's no noise floor (bar is empty) but mouse clicks are still being picked up by the mic.
thank you so much, this is helped me remove my keyboard from the background :)
Thanks dude. Simplified noise gates for my tiny brain.
These videos are really helpful. Thanks man.
This is a great tutorial, I would have been able to follow it if I had half my brain missing. Good job.

Use a filter limiter on OBS. -1.5db and 60ms release and you’re golden

Is it possible to change audio filter settings while streaming, or do you have to stop first, adjust, then restart?
Just want to point out that it wouldn't work for me until I set my mic's volume to 100% in the audio mixer.

@@awalldigital, my mic is the detachable mic that comes with the original HyperX Cloud headset.
This fixed the horrendous sound of my breathing into the mic. My clips are already so much better

It doesn't really work + it distorted my voice in a robotic way

question : Still there is keyboard sound while using noise gate. how do i get rid of that
This helped with cancelling my annoyingly loud AC, but it still isn't getting rid of the most important noise I want gone: CLICKS AND TYPING. :(
