The real reason why Gohan wasn't the main character wasn't because of the fans but because Toriyama himself claimed he wrote himself into a corner and that the arc was unsuitable for Gohan, Gohan was actually really popular with fans at the time. Toriyama even said this on an interview. Goten was supposed to be a foil to Trunks, not so much as a character, he's similar to Chiaotzu in this case.
The fact that Toriyama changed his mind on who the hero was halfway into the arc is another example of just how bad it was.

In defense of Piccolo forfeiting to Shin, keep in mind he's 1/3 Kami now. Kami was scared shitless of King Yemma, who outranks him in the Heavenly Pecking Order. Shin outranks EVERYONE in the Heavenly Pecking Order. I think status and respect had more to do with him forfeiting than anything. It'd be like the Pope refusing to fight GOD.

Thing is, with Yemma and Kami, we can tell that there's a power gap right away with Yemma being able to reign in Raditz's soul, where Kami is likely still at the same power level he was at when he lost to Piccolo Jr. back in Dragon Ball. Meanwhile, Shin was worried about even fighting Pui Pui, who's top feat was having his planet have 10x Earth's normal gravity, a feat that was surpassed by even the Earthlings before the crew even got to Namek. Hell, we see Kid Trunks able to move at 150x Earth's gravity without needing to go super saiyan, meaning even Goten and Trunks could likely outclass Shin in a fight if we are to take his fears about Pui Pui seriously.

But Vegeta's motivation to turn evil is a bit deeper, and it's because he's disgusted with his own weakness. He has become a family man, vulnerable because he has loved ones, and he got there by following Goku's example. I think that was important character development, it's like his mid life crisis. He didn't just gain physical strength, he also severed his emotional bonds, and he mistakenly believes that to be another kind of strength. His failure proves the error of his thinking, so it's all relevant and important.

    • @dtoadq
      @dtoadq 2 года назад +50

I agree. As well redundancies aren't always a weakness in plot, here it's a strength imo because it shows how issues from the past have been unnaturally stretched, from Goku being dead, to their limit in the present and are demanding resolution. As well it strengthens their resolve.
I also didnt like his comment on goku/vegeta not having SS2. Gohan surpassing both Goku and Vegeta would motivate both to reach that level, for different reasons ofc, but their arcs can happen off screen. Neither Goku, Vegeta or Gohan are different characters after they reach SS1 (nor Gohan w.r.t. SS2), so it's weird to expect them to be noticeably different

Goku only could keep up with kaioken and if it wasnt for that and help from his friends Vegeta would have stomped Goku right there and remained as the top saiyan (I know Broly is still around but nobody knows about that). Vegeta felt that he was that strong then because he was evil. that's what he meant by wanting to return to the way he was before. because ever since that fight which Vegeta was much stronger but still failed Goku has always managed to stay ahead of him. Vegeta thought that babadi would make him evil again and that would return things to the way they are supposed to be (Vegeta being the strongest saiyan).

  • @giornogiovanna8476
    @giornogiovanna8476 Год назад +385

Just gotta say, involving Goten and Trunks, I think a much better way to handle them is if they didn't get their Super Saiyan transformations until after Vegeta's sacrifice
Like Trunks waking up and learning about his father's death, after he hugged him for what is possibly the first time, and the grief hitting him like a truck and causing him to become a Super Saiyan
And while their in the Chamber (not just to perfect the dance but also train together and get stronger overall) Goten is overwhelmed with emotions and anxiety, Trunks is acting different because of Vegeta's death, Goten only had one day to finally meet his father who's been absent his whole life, and that day has been ruined, and the whole world is depending on them to get stronger, but Goten doesn't think he'll ever be strong enough because Trunks is so much stronger than him and he'll just hold Trunks back, and all of these emotions cause Goten to snap and go Super Saiyan as well
Then I'd imagine Trunks would see this and try to comfort Goten and talk to him, even though he isn't good at talking about more serious things, and this talk helps them both get a better handle of themselves and they realize they are still kids and need to embrace it, causing them to try to create crazy techniques that Buu, or anyone else, wouldn't be able to see coming, like the kamikaze ghosts and all of that
I feel this would make their characters far less annoying in the long run and would make Gotenk more bearable because we'd see why they fight the way they do and why they're able to pull so many stupid tricks out of nowhere

Having them be able to help each other get through these stressful times would be a fantastic way for them to finally get the fusion techniques down as well. Like before, they couldn't nail the dance because they were both far too tensed up and weary from not being able to sleep or something which makes them sloppy with the precise movements of the dance, but once they actually talk to each other and cool down a bit, they're finally able to perfect the dance (I wrote this when I was tired so it probably doesn't make sense but whatever)

As for Buu, it is true that we never see anything that demonstrates he is leagues beyond Cell and Frieza in power. Cell on the other hand never felt extremely powerful. He had to hide from Piccolo and the rest of the Z fighters to steal more power, Vegeta and Trunks made a beating out of him. @@insightfulhistorian1861 The thing with Frieza is that he couldn't push back the spirit bomb or deflect it. He may have survived it but it took a big toll on him and that spirit bomb was not as powerful as the one against Buu. As for piccolo pooping his pants, he still tried to fight Frieza in his final form and powered up imperfect cell. With Super Buu, he didn't even try because he knew how over powered he was. He was so outmatched that he allowed buu to kill off the human population to give gotenks more time to train. That's how terrifying and powerful Buu was.
You're right that Frieza and cell can blow up planets as well. My point is that kid Buu was able to do it without breaking a sweat and the z fighters were unable to stop him while Frieza and cell had to power up to do it and were unsuccessful because of the z fighters.

@@em9886 Wtf are you talking about? Frieza and Cell did NOT have to power up to destroy a planet. Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, which is much larger and denser than earth, effortlessly with one finger, and Planet Namek with minimal effort. And Cell could easily destroy Earth, he powered up in order to kill Gohan, not destroy the Earth. Do you even know Dragonball?
As for the spirit bomb, Goku drew energy from multiple planets for the spirit bomb on Namek, while the spirit bomb against Kid Buu was only from the people of Earth. Not too impressive. And let's be honest, for a villain as horrifyingly powerful and dangerous as Kid Buu, killing him with the spirit bomb felt underwhelming. I mean, you really expect me to believe the same technique that failed twice against weaker villains would suddenly work on the strongest villain who is leagues beyond them? I call bullshit on that convenient plot device. Even Goku thought using a spirit bomb was a joke when Vegeta suggested it.
I suggest you read the manga because Piccolo openly and angrily admits how hopeless they all were against final form Frieza, even though he tried to fight anyway. Plus, Piccolo is so outclassed by the Saiyans by the Buu saga, that Super Buu intimidating him says nothing about Buu's power. Think about it: what can Piccolo's reaction to Buu tell us when Vegeta would wipe the floor with Piccolo and he got demolished by fat buu? If anything, you could argue Goku admitting he had no chance to beat super buu, even in ssj3 was convincing proof of Buu's power.

I think the Buu Saga had some good elements, good moments, interesting worldbuilding... and yet I wish they had just stopped with Cell's defeat. It would have ended with Gohan on a really high note; all those seemingly random power boosts he had in the past finally crystalized into something new and special, representing the potential found in human-Saiyan hybrids. It really was the perfect time to stop the story before it got overencumbered.

I have said this so many times before. I think if they had done buu better though it could have made for such an amazing villain. The problem is he is nigh invincible. Its ridiculous. Cell was such an amazing villain and to follow up with Buu was kinda ridiculous. Especially considering the fact that he is basically braindead. Had he been more like Cell he would have easily defeated all the Z fighters.
I also didn't like GT too much. I don't like Uub as a character. We lose Buu. Omega Shenron is boring. The 100 year time skip is confusing and so is the fact that Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. can both go super saiyan despite the fact that they have almost no Saiyan DNA in them. And finally, I feel like they spit on Vegeta making him have to use blutz waves in order to become a Super Saiyan 4. He should have been able to achieve that on his own.
And now we have super. And honestly not many great things have come out of that. They keep sidelining Buu even though he could probably mop the floor with most villains if he would just TRAIN. Vegeta gets great character development which is the only good part really besides Beerus. Goku is borderline a complete imbecile. I just feel as though Dragonball and its feeling died after the Cell saga. But anyway these are just my opinions so if someone disagrees thats fine. Im more than willing to listen to your side and discuss the matter. Just be respectful please.

I know I'm in the minority who thinks the Buu arc was better than the Cell arc, and honestly I think most of the issues with the Buu arc were from said rot accumulating over the course of the series, and think that if dbz was written better from the get-go, it wouldn't have had this problem. One thing I might say theBuu Saga does "better" than the rest of Z. Is working as more of a traditional kids cartoon like adventure time, steven universe or the like. On that maybe does kind of tell a continuous story, but really it is more just a bunch of adventures stitched together. I grew up not only watching DBZ, but watching a continuous stream of DBZ reruns. And the boo saga in particular is structured in a way in which is kind of fine to just jump in on any given moment. There is so much happening during that saga, so many stories that start and are completely done in a couple of episodes. Like the great saiyaman episodes, the tournament, fighting babidi's minions, majin boo and Mr. Satan becoming friends, the fusion stuff, the other fusion stuff, and all mixed with a lot of comedy to break up the drama, in that regard it feels a bit like the original Dragon Ball. The other sagas have way better story, but if you watch some random episode casually you always feel like you jumped in in the middle of something. I mean no joke, the main frieza fight between frieza and the gang is like 25 episodes. All of them of non-stop continuous tension, no jokes to be had, you just jump into the middle of a very serious fight, including some serious character deaths and the like.
I feel this might be a reason why the Boo saga was so beloved while airing... but to modern fans and anime conventions is the lowest point. Because people don't watch dragon ball casually on their tvs anymore. It is not just another show on the TV, it is this legendary anime with the legendary story and the final ark just never reaches that level.

The one that killed your father, who was believed to be the strongest fighter alive? That you JUST WATCHED die? Yeah, no. That's ridiculously unfair criticism.
Also, while I get where you're coming from with adult Gohan not knowing better, literally every Saiyan given screen time in the DBZ acted the same way when they perceived themselves to be stronger than their opponent. Goku? Yup. Raditz? Yup. Nappa? Yup. Vegeta? Yup. Trunks? Yup. I love that he's a proud warrior, but for fucks sake, man!! There is a fine line between being proud and being a stupid twat. Although I agree on the fact that the Buu saga is very messy and all that, I’d like to counter on a major point: Goku’s development throughout Dragon Ball, and it apparently being betrayed at the end of the Buu saga. First of all, Goku didn’t learn mercy from King Kai. He always was merciful, in the sense that he always had respect for life and the world around him, thanks to his upbringing with old Gohan. A turning point was his training with Kami, where he grew older and wiser in more ways than one, and this is where we get the Goku that is willing to spare Piccolo, Vegeta and even Frieza, because the child-like ferocity he fought with as a child has been mitigated. Where once he wouldn’t have stopped to think “hey, I’m taking a life here”, now he does, and won’t go through with it if he deems it not necessary.
Then come the Androids. First things first, the theme of the Androids saga is not that violence/fighting isn’t the answer. The theme is that a parent must see his child as a separate individual and not project his own shadow over him. I mean, who’s the villain who starts it all? Dr. Gero, a degenerate “father” who literally programs his children/creatures with HIS life purpose imprinted in their brains. When you think about it, it’s pretty straightforward. Cell, Gero’s ultimate “child”, a Frankenstein monster with no soul, made up by the good doctor with literal pieces of other individuals, is defeated by a father (Goku) loving and trusting his son fully, and by another father (Vegeta) setting his pride aside to avenge his fallen son, having finally realized that he loved Trunks for who he was, not just as an extension of himself. The theme is parenthood. If the Frieza saga had made Goku into a complete warrior, the Cell saga has made him into a complete father. Which leads me to the Buu saga.
Unlike Frieza, who is pure arrogance and cruelty, and Cell, who is pure “falsity”, pure lack of individuality and soul, Majin Buu is pure lack of wisdom, education and experience. Something all his forms have in common, something that defines Buu’s character as a whole, is his extreme naivety. Even when he grows more sophisticated through absorbing people, that is just experience he stole from others, he didn’t earn anything. Imagine what Goku could have turned into if he still had his post-amnesia purity of heart, but NO ONE to guide him. That is Buu. Which is why now, indeed, “violence is not the answer” is the theme of the story. Buu is momentarily put down through force, yes (and even then by the Genkidama, a symbol of love and hope), but Goku goes out of his way to ask that he gets a second chance, because he understands this isn’t a complete monster, it’s just a clueless child who didn’t know any better. A child who could very much have been him, without his friends, family and mentors by his side.
And so, Dragon Ball concludes with Goku putting all the qualities he learned during his long journey to the best use: giving Buu the chance no one ever gave him in his previous life, giving that clueless child a chance to grow up. I don’t think our hero’s characterization is betrayed in any way, and hell, I think this ending is nothing short of beautiful.
    Sorry for the long comment😅
(and as for why Goku left his children, dude, they grew up, Gohan’s not 4 anymore😂)

      Not true.
The only problem with the Buu saga is that we weren't told from the beginning that Buu has forms (Evil and Pure). If Kaioshin in episode 233 said that Buu has 2 more forms in his arsenal, then everything would be in order.

Honestly if we wanted to avoid giving Goku unnecessary power boosts during both the Majin Vegetable fight and the Fat Gum fight we could have just convined Kaioken with super saiyan during the Vegeta fight, not just as a call back but also to show that Goku is struggling to keep up and needs to resort to a technique that would harm him but since he's dead it doesn't affect him as much (similar to that thing SSJ3 does) and during the Buu fight just have him play defense and use the kaioken speed boost to out maneuver Buu and if you still want Goku to reach a new height here then maybe make it so that he gets worn out but refusing to give up and let all those people die he goes SSJ2. This not only would make SSJ2 more special (as in it doesn't get shafted by 3), it would also make it so Goku didn't just reach a new power beyond anything seen before while dead, it would mantain the main story beats the same, it wouldn't break Goku's character and maybe it would justify why using this technique lowered his time there as the technique was already shown to have negative side effects

11:18 it's later explained that the Kaioshin and Kabito let Gohan's energy be stolen so they could then follow Yamu and Spopovich to Babadi's ship, which is hidden underground. Plus you got the Videl sensu bean scene in the wrong spot, it happens before his fight with kabito.
15:11 Kaioshin couldn't have thrown a meteor at Babadi's spaceship as he wasn't around when it touched down on Earth
Generally it's better to use the manga as the thing you're critiquing compared to the anime, as it's the most accurate to the author's original intentions (so filler bits like that cell games recap movie or Dabura saying piccolo isn't "a real demon" aren't present in the manga)
21:55 Kaioshin asking Vegeta why is, again, anime filler and not in the manga. Also, while Goku technically never beat Vegeta in a 1v1 fight, he did surpass him in strength many times in the series, using his acts as Majin Vegeta to show that he's not a good guy isn't really accurate because him blowing up the bleachers is to show that he's bad now, and Goku *did* spare his life way back in the saiyan arc. And in the manga, his speech for hating Goku isn't really a speech but just a few speech bubbles, so pinning this on Toriyama isn't accurate either (the Goku v Vegeta fight is much shorter in the manga and doesn't contain Vegeta's speech for hating Goku there either.)
24:24 I'd argue Goku's transformation doesn't symbolize that some people can't be saved, as even after achieving the transformation, he still tried to spare Frieza. Plus Vegeta and Gohan's super Saiyan one transformations happened off screen in the manga, but I guess they could still symbolize the things you mentioned.
25:40 Yes, the point of this fight is to further characterize Vegeta as evil now, but comparing it to their first fight doesn't work because since then Vegeta has developed as a character. Plus in the manga, the fight is much shorter (only being a couple of pages split up by Gohan and the Kaioshin trying to stop Buu's revival) so your problem with it being drawn out is anime only.
34:40 Goku *has* held back his power when lives were at stake (like during the entire Frieza fight after he turned super saiyan) but yeah, super sayain 3 was made *after* the Goku and Vegeta fight and Toriyama tries to mention/explain this earlier but it just doesn't work. I still think super saiyan 3 is cool, but not for any deep reason.
43:37 Gohan isn't training with the z sword because it's a sword and he can cut up Buu, he's training with it because Kaioshin and Kabito said the one who wielded it would gain an amazing power, and they were holding it would be enough for Gohan to defeat Buu.
44:51/46:40 weird that you bring up Gotenks after super buu is formed and kills everyone, when Gotenks first showed up when buu was still in his first form and before everyone died. Plus you forget to mention Gohan being alive and starting his training with the z sword in the first place.
47:18 the room has enough resources (i.e. food) to support only 2 people at a time, which is why they went in pairs in the cell arc. There's no hard limit on the number of people that can actually go in.
48:23 In the manga, Gotenks only fought buu in base for a page or two, so this is another anime only problem
50:57 As we can see with good Buu and later Super Buu when he fights Gohan, Buu's absorption and candy abilities are entirely different from each other.
51:57 In the manga, super saiyan 3 Gotenks vs super buu is only two chapters, so again anime filler is killing the pacing.
1:04:08 That's not exactly how fusion works, but you are right that potara fusion gives you a stronger end result than the fusion dance.
1:12:50 Uub isn't "literally" a stranger as Goku knows he's the reincarnation of pure buu he mentioned before killing pure buu. That's why he entered the tournament and decided to train Uub in the first place, to meet Uub and get the chance to fight someone strong. It *is* dumb that Goku left his friends and family so suddenly to train Uub but Uub isn't a complete stranger.
Great video though, the Buu saga is definitely the weakest part of the original series. For me it's that way because of the plot holes, dropped plot points, miss used characters, etc. and you could really tell that at this point Toriyama was running on fumes. But I think if you don't think too hard about it it can still be enjoyable to read through. I tried to correct any facts that you got wrong but I largely agreed with a good chunk of your points. Really well edited and really entertaining video :)

I agree that buu saga is worse than cell and frieza but I still have a few problems with this vid, it was obvious goku wanted to fight vegeta, like you said goku fights for his friends, he really doesn’t have to go all out against vegeta, it’s clear he was wanting a fair fight, not to mention it could’ve helped vegeta knowing that him and goku are equal in strength (because he doesn’t know goku has ssj3) which is the whole reason he became majin. For instant transmission to work you have to sense ki, goku couldn’t sense Dr briefs ki from that far away, and so sending trunks isn’t really a problem for me, and goku stayed dead in other world because he felt wherever he is, there is evil, Goku isn’t just gonna stop training, and other world has planets which are 10X normal gravity and stated many times by vegeta that saiyans have no limit to their potential, so the saiyans having all these transformations makes sense, super saiyan 3 as a transformation does look cool although I agree it doesn’t have much depth, other than nature vs nurture purposes which was established in the first super saiyan transformation, another thing I want to mention is that dragon ball characters can lower their ki to make it possible for others to not sense them, although never explained the only logical explanation is that babidi, dabora etc lowered their ki to make the Z fighters not sense them, It makes sense since babidi were sending out fodder to gather ki, another thing I wanted to add is that spopo absorbing gohans ki isn’t a problem to me since we saw the androids like dr gero and Android 19 absorb ki from goku in the prior arcs, as for goku vs fat buu, the whole point of that was not only to stall for trunks but also for buu to disobey babidi, goku has a chat with buu telling buu that he’s much stronger than babidi and doesn’t need to obey everything he says

    • @kmgyening
      @kmgyening 2 года назад +4

It's not obvious that Goku wanted a fair fight against Majin Vegeta, when he specifically said that he wanted to end the fight as quickly as possible/at full power in order to avoid getting hurt and transferring that damage energy to Buu's shell. On top of that, he said this while they were both still in SSJ1, then he transformed to SSJ2 and was surprised after Vegeta also transformed. And prior to this scene, there was no indication that Goku knew that Vegeta had ascended past SSJ1. If Goku's explicitly stated top priority was preventing Buu's revival at full power, then why would he arbitrarily limit himself to a fair fight, which would increase his chances of reviving Buu at full power? That doesn't make sense.
Also, Goku specifically told Krillin and Piccolo that he couldn't beat Buu alone because he and Vegeta were equal in strength, and Vegeta couldn't do it. No mention of having another transformation in his pocket, and he states that he intended to fuse with Vegeta before the kids ever came up as a suggestion. So prior to its introduction, there was no indication that SSJ3 existed, or that he didn't use it because he wanted to make Vegeta feel at any type of ease during their fight.
When Vegeta came back and accused Goku of hiding SSJ3 from him during their fight, Goku justified it by saying he was saving it for later, "just in case," but he never specified what he was saving it for. He didn't say anything about appeasing Vegeta or wanting a fair fight. It couldn't have been for Buu either, since he specifically indicated to his friends that FUSION is what he was saving for Buu, and didn't mention SSJ3 to them at all. And why would he save it later for Buu when Buu hadn't even been revived yet? Goku explicitly wanted to avoid giving Buu more energy in the first place, so it makes no sense for him to not use a transformation that would prevent him from taking damage from Vegeta.

1:14:16 You’re review was amazing. Super funny, well recapped, had good points. But this point is totally wrong. The only reason Goku allowed Vegeta to live was because he was excited by the strength Vegeta had and thought it would be a good challenge to fight him again. It’s dumb, I know and Goku’s “saiyan blood” that drives this decision is definitely a tacked on trait by toriyama that comes outta nowhere. Regardless, this IS the only reason Goku lets the villains live. It is because they are a stimulus for Goku to grow stronger. It has nothing to do with forgiveness or mercy

Buu is stated several times to be “magical” which gives him an excuse to have all of the wacky asspull shit like screaming a hole in dimensions. Also an excuse for wacky bullshit, metamoran fusion has been shown with Gotenks and both movie & canon Gogeta to give the fusion unique abilities that they otherwise would not have, like the Stardust Breaker and the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack. While they are pretty goofy, they aren’t present for no reason, I.e it has been established.

Also Piccolo is one of my favourite characters of the series. I’d like to say that his back seating to Gotenks somewhat makes sense because it continues the theme of the pupil surpassing the master which was present since Goku and his grandfather Gohan (though more famously Goku and Master Roshi). Gotenks’s cocky and zany personality also works as a thematic foil to Super Buu’s new malicious attitude, which in turn was a flip from his happy-go-lucky mannerisms. Kinda cool I guess.

Okay, I love your analysis of the themes of Dragon Ball z at the end of video… up to the Cell saga.
I think you missed the point of the Boo saga and its themes, and here’s why:
You are right that Goku learns in the saiyan saga to forgive others, then Freeza teaches him that not everyone deserves mercy, then your analysis of Cell is perfect also! Goku tries to give the fight to Gohan, and Gohan’s nature just isn’t like that, so Goku has to sacrifice himself and learn that not everyone loves to fight like he does.
Here’s the thing: Goku has a RESPONSIBILITY to earth. He is the strongest under the heavens, it is his responsibility to protect his friends and family, and after Cell, HE NEGLECTS this responsibility. The Boo saga fundamentally is Goku trying to reconcile that he has abandoned his responsibility for 7 years. Goku left it unattended, and needs to solve that issue with himself. He is trying to pass the responsibility on to a successor.
The lessons of the Boo saga go with the mini-arcs. He can’t count of Vegeta, Vegeta has other responsibilities. Gohan is not Goku’s successor, because Gohan doesn’t love to fight the way Goku does. He tries to step down to let the next generation- Goten and Trunks take on the threat. Thats the point of Goku using SSJ3, he isn’t trying to beat Boo, he is showing the boys how to fight and use SSJ3. The problem with them is that they are too inexperienced and young and arrogant to handle the threat.
When Goku fights Pure Boo, he realizes they are parallel. You said yourself, Kid Boo just LOVES to hurt people. Goku recognizes that Boo at his core is someone who just loves to fight, the only problem is that he is evil.
When Goku defeats him, his last wish is for someone that can understand him. He wishes for a person like Boo, with a pure heart, and the power to take on the responsibility that Goku holds. In the end, he passes the torch to his successor that the God’s granted him. Thats why I like the Boo arc in it’s themes. Its very well done in handling Goku’s legacy.

if you look at it that way, with goku finally finding someone like him, then i think its an okay if rushed conclusion.
the point i was trying to make is how the buu saga effectively conveys the message that the new generation, the gotenks, the gohan's, the videl's. are weak and powerless the story reverts back to goku, after promising us gohan. the overlying theme becomes about how the way of the older generation is right.

Also I see your point that this is where Dragon Ball essentially became “The Goku and Vegeta show”, because it is true that the side characters all don’t do much in Super at all. The characters assassination of Piccolo was hard to watch, and I’m super glad that the new movie gave him back the spotlight!

Also for anyone that brings up Vegeta mentioning in his 'You are number one' speech, that Goku spared him because he knew he would become good, you should remember that Goku was speaking to Kuririn telepathically, so Vegeta probably just assumed that, which is a funny thought.

      Facts

    • @marshoul2717
      @marshoul2717 2 года назад +10

Pretty much. In fact moments after that speech, where he's hyping up Goku, saying he's the best and could absolutely beat Buu, and that Goku fought him alone for the sake of sparing Vegeta from the reality that he couldn't win alone, Vegeta is then dumbfounded that Goku, at the pinnacle of Saiyan strength up to that point, actually doesn't have enough power to finish Buu, and in that same moment realizes that they ALL need to work together to defeat the enemy.
And that makes two underrated things that people miss about the significance of that speech. The first, which people miss and then proceed to complain about the Buu Saga's significance: beforehand Vegeta was a lot more focused on doing things by oneself, i.e. earlier in the arc where he believes that it's up to him to kill Buu, and while he was the last man standing per se, he still didn't get the job done, and neither did Goku, Ultimate Gohan, Vegito, nor Gotenks. The ultimate defeat of Majin Buu comes from a cooperative effort between every character-LITERALLY every character, which is the ultimate theme in the Buu Saga.
And the second: the "You are Number One!" was never meant to mean that Vegeta's completely given up on keeping in league Goku. It WAS that way at first; but Vegeta realizing the next moment that there is no "Strongest Man in the universe" or anything is in of itself an important development for Vegeta. And again, people tend to complain about "Ooooh Vegeta in Super basically never learned from the Buu Saga" because they miss this realization, but if anything it's the opposite: Vegeta develops even FURTHER, he realizes that while Kakarot isn't the strongest in the world or anything and he could totally still surpass him, he has other things worth protecting like a family. That in fact he CAN'T stop training and progressing in this series, no one should, because there's almost always going to be a threat to handle and battles to fight. That's why each and every person should pursue their own path to further awakening. I will admit sometimes Vegeta's character in Super is a bit wobbly and back-and-forth, the consistent path tells one of anything but regression.
But yeah, in general when it comes to the Buu Saga, I have plenty of other qualms with it (i.e. the "asspulls", as well established as they have been since the Namek Saga, are still asspulls and can never beat steadied and metered growth in power in pure satisfaction). It's still not my favorite Saga (Saiyan Saga forever 😤) but people who call it the last of Toriyama's wits and the worst arc in the series simply just don't know their source material.

@@marshoul2717 I completely agree with that. I'm glad to know that at least a few people actually understand Vegeta's character better then most. Vegeta finally started to open up to his more "human" real emotions was when he hugged Trunks for the first time. I feel like for him to have gone from a person stuck in his prideful elite saiyan class persona, to finally accepting a human's redeeming qualities such as love, was a huge progression and development to his character that doesn't really get talked about enough.
I feel like a main theme in the Buu arc was more so what you said in your second paragraph, that it's not up to one person. Goku who was still fixated on trying to move on from trying to save the Earth and passing down the torch to Goten, Trunks, Gohan were all mistakes he realized he made because of their personalities. I think in this arc Goku finally realized that the future of the world (future savior of Earth) is irrelevant if they don't have the right mindset to get the job done (gotenks playing around too much with super buu and gohan getting to cocky with super buu ultimately leading toward their downfall). So with that in mind Goku realized that it was up to him to guide them and the universe in the right direction by finally taking it upon himself to fight Buu head to head rather then to stall for someone else. Then came the beautiful conclusion of getting the entire world itself to defeat Buu after even himself burnt out which was (like you said) the main theme of this entire arc.
I do feel like things could've been handled a bit better in that arc but nonetheless I thought it was definitely up there as one of the best arcs. I still think every other arc beats it but I can't tolerate it being bashed by the majority of its fanbase for reasons like Gohan not being the main character and things of that nature.
I will have to say though that I would like to see an elaboration on why DBS Vegeta shouldn't be regarded as a character regression because that's something I think Super messed up pretty largely. I feel like Vegeta's whole character progression throughout Z gets regressed in super mainly because of his continued fixation on surpassing Goku when it's been established at the end of Buu saga that he's move on from that. So I would like to hear more about why you think he actually "developed further"?

Goku says that he was strong enough to kill Buu when he went SS3 but wanted the boys to do it since he wasn’t around anymore. He had trunks get the radar and fought buu because he figured buu would want to wait for a strong fight and that he’d kill Babadi. Goku literally set that up after the fight.
