You need to look for a more extreme "old school board" : smaller and less volume ! The F2 Sputnik 270*52, or a similar "speed needle" will easily go over 35 knots with some decent wind ! My topspeed on a 1995 F2 Sputnik 270 with the stock fin was 70.5 km/h (38 knots) I do use the newer racesails, as these have much more control in high winds.

Great idea, and I also think they should put a modern fin in there to make the comparison completely about the board and not the board fin combi!

Good idea for the future! We took this board simply because we had it in the van...😄

Trust me, the difference does not come from the fin....🤣 but I will try to buy a good Powerbox fin and go again!

Old school boards were matched to the sails of that era - I sailed then and easily got a Mistral Energy over 30 kts on sails of that day and it wasn’t that hard. Modern sails ARE much better, as are the boards, but those sails put the CE in the wrong place for the old school boards, full stop. I’m not saying turn back the clock, modern equipment IS better, but you had a mismatch there.

Or a Cobra slalom 270, Same answer as on te last video 😄.
Hé Jan😄. Yeah the right old board are seriously fast. I still have a Cobra slalom 270 from 1994. It’s 270x52 90 liter. The f2 Sputnik is based on this shape. And yes the cobra 270 was the fastest production board of that year (69km/h in the German speedcontest). I still have it but don’t surf it. The reason.. fins. The newer fins are so much better than the old fins. The cobra uses a pb fin. Good race fins are almost only in Tuttlebox. Maybe a new fin can be ordered in PB. But that’s to much money…. Well it looks interesting to try the old cobra again 😄.

The oldskool boards have a different rocker to modern slalom gear. They don't pop on the plane. You have to get them going somewhat before they loosen up and unwet. Then they go like blazes. For best top speed you need a small weed fin (Tribal weed speeds are awesome) or a Delta fin. Both can be had in powerbox. I sail a lot of the older speed needles and you need to rethink your board trim. On flat water trimming the board to ride flatter is crucial. Delta's really help with the lift they generate to achieve this.

Nice vid, i love all oldschool stuff! We just got back here on Fuerte on our old Windsurf stuff from the 90`s and we have a blast! Bic Astr Rock still rocks! Try the Sunset Slalom, it`s meant to be one of the faster boards back in the days! Would love to have my Hifly Spad here but i sold it for gasoline to get back....😁

I had a Sailboards Maui 9'6" just like that. It pointed so nice, I would ride it then 130 degrees off wind down the lineup from the Water Tower of Seal Beach to almost Dog Beach at Huntington. Half the run, was on a foot of tail! Glory days! This was fun to see!!!!

    I still have a Klepper 295 slalom-speedboard....
I wonder what the topspeed would be with the latest rig.
    .
This said in 1988 it was faster than an original Hobie Cat with a crew of 2 .
    My sail was the original 6 sqm;
Location: Strand Horst - Harderwijk in Holland.

    Greatvideo, as usual... ❤
You also have to try old sails and you'd be using similar gear as I do! 😂
Maybe (and I'm being too audacious) you have to put the mast a little forward to get the board plane as you have the nose too high.
Anyway, I do 30kn "easily" on my mistral edge, and it seems to have more speed. As I remember there were production boards that got 40kn. Maybe you should try to get one of that machines!!!

As an old school windsurfer myself I think 2 things look a bit odd with this old & new gear combination. 1st: back in the day almost everybody used a seat harness making you stand quite differently and 2nd the sails back then where more high aspect (long mast, short boom) and it was all about "closing the gap" between the bottom of your sail and the deck. Seems like the modern sail is cut in a way that it stays more upright? Maybe the combination with modern sails and a modern board stance is not as optimal as it can get.
    Nonetheless very nice video.

I did a modest 61 km/t on a 105 L Sputnik 280 world cup edition with a 4 cam 5.4 Naish sail, some 25 years ago. Never tryed it with a bigger sail, but felt there were so much more potential. super acceleration on that board, but a bit scary with footstraps so close to the railing!...... and not that easy to gype. But soooo much fun, anyway! (still got that board).

You guys are so brave doing this. I prefer to wait for warmer weather. As a remarf concerning the old board I think you can use a smaller fin. The fin is too big and slows the board down. I surf with old F2 stuff and my biggest fin is 30cm.

Mario, class video. The 'old board you're using in the video is still a lot younger that the Vinta's I still still on. I'd safely say that my Vinta's are from the early mid 90's. They're slow, heavy and hard to get on the plane but still great fun to sail. I think one's a Vinta 220 and the others a 180. I've tried looking on line for some info but to no avail.
However, don't you find when you've been asking an old board for an hour or so and switch to a newer one that your windsurfing has gotten better??? Or is that all in my head....

  • @jasonrzoska1688

Tune your gear properly, the older boards require different tuning. Mast track much further fwd, boom height much higher, longer harness lines, get weight off the board and out.

Welkome in the nineties. No-nose (less volume) and a big box rail an a lot of volume in the back. You buy a courseboard, which is not the fastest boards on earth, shaper Lewis (speed surfer!) This board is build for fast up-wind. But… with this board you have made a sling shot an then you start full speed your course.

When you said you were going to the store to get a tune up I thought you were gonna modify the board shape or apply some secret paint or surface finish under the board to improve speed... not just change foot straps XD I think there is more experimental stuff to be done with this old board! thanks for the content!

Why you are using such a.crappy board. Use a Jimmy Lewis or Sailboards Maui if you want a true comparison I have the old speed needle of Roddy Lewis which did over 40 knots in Fuerte with modern fin and foil sail (as you need more high aspect for old school boards) I am sure you can go faster
