The only downside to this plane is the limited number of sidewinders. The modernized F-5E could carry 4 sidewinders, or AIM-120s. Oddly the planes used in the iran-iraq war carried soviet aa missiles like the AA-8, 10, and 11. Great video BTW!

Seeing how the F-5E in game also carries double AGM-65 launchers and that was only issued as an upgrade for export planes, I don't think it would be too crazy to ask for wing mounted AIM-9 rails, it's basically the same and would really put it on par with its counterparts from other nations
It’s not exactly that odd considering most Cold War era air to air missiles were reverse engineered by both sides.
@@jfv2312 I'm pretty sure Gaijin has already denied any and all bug reports asking to give the F-5E 4x Sidewinders, which sucks.

Glad to finally see this review, one of my favorite jets ingame. A couple things you didn't mention that I've noticed while playing:
-The plane has excellent energy retention around Mach 1, even in hard turns
-The armored targets belt is surprisingly the best one to use in my opinion, as it sets fires much more reliably than the air targets belt (with which I seem to get many not-so-critical hits)
In air battles I like to stay low with this jet, hugging the ground as I make a wide circle outside and then punch into the side of the furball. As long as you keep aware and are smart with your missiles you can rack up some serious kill counts with this one.

@@andyrocker9271 same got around 300 kills with air targets belts and hated it all the way but tried armored targets and it changed my life
Unlocked this around 2 weeks ago and even stock it's been sooo much fun! Probably my favorite plane I've played so far.

Looking forward to flying this one eventually. Also hoping we see the F-20 Tigershark within the next year or two.

Thank you for this useful video! I just got the f5e as my first top tier plane. After flying the F 104s and the F4c, I'm sure I'll have fun with the maneuverability, flares, and decent missiles on this plane.
If it’s repair cost wasn’t -18k I’d actually enjoy taking it out.

Iranian here, about Iranian F-5Es:
- Azarakhsh(Lightening) : it was just a copy in the time of it's production to overcome the sanctions about Weapons and Arms Purchase. i hope it gets added as a GE skin for F-5E.
- Sa'eghe(Thunderstorm): an upgraded Azarakhsh with twin angled Rudder, new domestic Engines, new domestic avionics and ability to carry Wide range of Domestic and Foreign Weapons.
- Sa'eghe 2: 2 seater version, i actually don't know if it's a trainer, or a Pilot/Rio Kinda deal.
- Kowsar: Azarakhsh, but 2 seater, almost everything has been upgraded with domestic equipment and it's claimed to be a 4th gen fighter. Has the Domesticly made AESA Radar(It's been said that it's an AWG-9 with AESA Dish) and more hardpoints to carry almost everything we have in Iran.
this was the most op jet for exactly one update before they shifted the meta to pd at top tier lol

op? The F-5E was (is) good, it was never op. Russian players just weren't used to facing an opponent that could actually put up a fight in a close engagement in their MiG-21s. All the US had before that was Phantoms. If the F-5E was op, then by that logic the J-7E is like super op now.
@@collander7766 Yeah OP is a bit of an exaggeration but it was meta for a short period of time when it was added now its still good but doesn't keep up with the top tier meta.

My favorite supersonic jet, its very good looking and is the jet i use the most in the PS2 era Ace Combat
Mexico is still using them, has been improving them since the 80s and most people see them as obsolete and wants them gone, some say its enough for us.
A bit of trivia:the plane rolls so fast it has a limiter. You have to press a button to get the full roll rate. Or at least that's how it is in DCS.

Note from someone who loves this plane. Ive noticed a small little detail that is near irrelevant, but interesting nonetheless. If you bring a full fuel load, the fuel gauge won't start counting down untill you reach about 20 minutes. Test it yourself! Go in test flight on full fuel, light the burner for a minute, and then do the same on 20m. Also, another note that i dont know if you mentioned, the leading edge slats arent automatic lile they are in real life or DCS, but you can deploy your flaps at 538kt (mach .81). I've always loved this jet for simulator battles because of the gorgeous cockpit functionality. The only downside (just for me) is the gyroscopic and radar assisted gyroscopic gunsight, but your universal belts can give you lovely amounts of assistance because every other round is a tracer. (API-T/HEI). another thing. If you want to do multi role stuff, just bring the 3x 1,000lb bombs. Theyre quick to drop in a pickle (pun intended), and can do decent damage to a strategic base if you want some extra SL and RB in your game. : )

TIM, have you ever considered the repair costs for these reviews because im sure that im not the only one that cares MASSIVELY about that
The thing is that repair costs are variable, even more no that they changed the way they are calculated.
@@valrond youre not wrong, but in my PERSONAL opinion the repair costs can really make or break a vehicle for me
I've mentioned the repair costs in a few reviews (the Shackleton bomber for example), but to be totally blunt - gaijin has simply changed the repair costs on stuff too often.
Yea i love this jet but due to the repair costs still being very high for reasons that only god knows, (even after the economy change) and the lack of reward percentage prevents allot of ppl from using it. If u look at the russian tree not one of their top tier jets have have costs this high...to put this into perspective.. just yesterday i took my f5e out into a realistic match.. i did not die, landed once, got one assist, and we won the game.. my rewards= -800 this should not happen its like im being punished for taking my time and effort to grind up for this plane, just to use it..
Mexico has 5 f5s, its always a joy seeing them on our independence day parade, they fly by my house while on route to the parade.

For the Gau-13, really it only drops the performance enough that you need flaps to fight MLDs and delta wings. You do need to throw your weight around and at isn't the most user friendly against things that can get the first turn better than you but I find the extra firepower to be useful enough to catch the planes you can energy trap.
Considering that the MLD is a better dogfighter than the F-5E even _without_ the pod, I'd have to disagree. It *really* tanks the performance.

can we have a video about advanced manuvers? I see lots of basic manuver videos, but I still can't do a proper vertical scissors, nor energy trap the enemy.

I love dogfighting F-5s in my Cl13b Mk6. The kinematic differences make it challenging, but quite often their cockiness make them underestimate you. Protip - if you are engaging a Mk6 you are doing exactly what he wants you to do.
A smart F5 player will just go vertical at mach .95 and completely run you out of energy after 3 loops/spirals. If you decide to dissengage he'll run you down and if you stay chasing he'll gun you after getting on your six because youre stalling.
If you've beaten F5 players in sabre i can wholeheartedly say those where garbage piltos who did not know what they were doing.

Hey I love your video but I just wanted to tell you that the flaps on the f5E are amazing when dogfighting. They shouldn’t be underestimated especially if you know how to use flaps in a dogfight

i love this plane and want to agree, but fighting against things like the f-4 constantly kinda brings this plane down a lot, fantastic if you can get close and brawl, but those fights end quick with the number of missiles at top tier
Definitely my favourite plane, but the huge repair cost keeps me away from my baby.
Good guide. Tim I would personally recommend to fly with keyboard and using your mouse as a pure camera unless you get a shot on people. It highly increases the quality of the gameplay shown. :)
Any chance on a review of F-5C as a premium? I consider buying a prem plane for US and trying to decide between Harrier and F-5, and while AV-8 is solid on 9.7, i wonder if F-5 is on its 10.3 with no the best AA missiles and no guided munitions\CCIP for CAS.

Buy the 21 as well when its on sale! Its a ton more fun and you also get to know your adversaries if you still think the F5 is more fun (it isnt ;P)

Still the MiG21 is widely regarded to be a more fun aicraft to fly because the F5's flight model is severly outdated.

does the tail hook actualy work? IRL its only for airfield emergencys and the Plane would practically explode if it ever touched the deck of a boat.
It works in test flights to land on the carrier (or at least, it did for me) so I'm presuming it would be fully functional in regular matches.
You are 100% correct that it was only intended for emergencies on regular runways, but .. warthunder, so ... ;-)

Thats it. Just dont get slow. Slow as in getting below mach 0.9. Youre the fastest jet on the deck at your BR so just use that to your advantage. You should play it as an f104 with bombs.
I recommend watching Defyn's video on the F104 and F105 he's a really good ARB player.

I swear....it's always the people who fly this aircraft and the 5C up into space just to take me out when I am only bombing bases and most of the time my team is losing anyhow with no chance for a come back.

The F-5E was barely used by the US, TBH I wouldn't have minded if the US only got the F-5A considering how much overlap there is in planes there are in higher tiers now.
Why give it an inferior version?
The US used both and still uses F-5E's for Aggressor Opfor operations and training.
That doesnt sound like a lot but America had *hundreds* of them.

@@przeterminator3453 as it has a high repair cost I can understand. But every match I go in with my J-7E I’d full of them on the enemy team. Not an F4j in sight
@@SixteenthSine20 The thing is very strong, if you fight it on their terms... kinda like with every plane. You will most likely always lose to it in the dogfight (well read: close proximity dogfights). Focus more on killing the rest of the team, once they have no teammates anymore and you (hopefully) outnumber the F-5E, the F-5E is in no position to force its own terms onto you, it's too slow to pressure you into dogfighting (unless you get bored, or due to tickets...) and only has two IR missiles, from there you can slowly try making the fight be on your terms. There are some planes tho that can beat the F-5E in its own game, in certain conditions, but usually won't as most dogfights will include many types of maneuvers, but anyways I think the MLD can beat it in a pure ratefight (although maybe with low fuel) and a delta wing will win against it in a one circle turn, however usually only on the first turn (after that they usually have no leftover energy).
Basically it's very strong, but only with a team to force its enemies slow enough for the F-5E to force those slower enemies into dogfights, where it's pretty much unbeatable.

The f-5E is really op in war thunder and fit the meta very well. However the F-5C is not like the F-5E despite it getting a lot of reputation from RUclipsrs.
