Do me a favor and give your speeds distances weights and measures in both metric and American customary units. when you're making a video in English about an American product would be nice if you used American weights and measures. Metric sucks.
You forgot to mention that when USSR got their first F-5, during the Vietnam war, and run it against MiG-21, MiG lost in all possible scenarios, which made the soviets confused as it was the best they could do at that time.

Fun fact: the F-5 was a major influence on the development and specs of the MiG-29 and Su-27. Both of those programs were already underway when the Soviets got their hands on F-5s captured from South Vietnam; initially, like most of everyone else, they didn't think of these as much more than a "budget fighter" of lesser quality - and were pretty confident that their own MiG-21 (which showed itself respectably against the much more powerful and expensive F-4) would outperform the Freedom Fighter if the two ever met.
However, no sooner than they got it to the testing range - they were in for a shock: in mock dogfights, the F-5 was consistently wiping the floor with even the best, Soviet-only variants of the MiG-21. The test pilots immediately began praising the F-5's simplicity and agility, while engineers were somewhat disturbed to see that the USSR seemed to have been beaten at what they thought was completely their specialty - a cheap, high-performance little fighter fit for mass-production and simple operation.
The resulting kick in the pants meant that the upcoming MiG-29 and Su-27's performance benchmarks were raised - it's not clear whether they were evaluated directly against captured F-5s, but it was very clear to the Soviets that their next fighters would have to be even more agile than first thought. And most importantly - it helped convince the Soviets that they and their allies could no longer just count on hordes of MiG-21s to get the job done, and that they needed to get serious about not just supplementing and upgrading, but fully replacing their MiG-21 fleet.
Either way - the F-5 made quite an impression and it's to the Soviet test pilots' credit that they immediately recognized and reported honestly that it was a better dogfighter than anything they had at the time - something they completely didn't expect when they brought it over from Vietnam.
@walt charamba - While I agree that the F5 was a very good light weight fighter for it's time, even a heavily modernized version of the F5 today could not come close to competing with modern fighters like the F-15, F-18E/F, F-16, Tyhpoon, Rafale, Su 27, Su 35, and Gripen. I'm not even going to try to compare it to the either the F-35 or F-22.
@@mississippirebel1409 Interesting facts, T-38 which is a training jet based on F-5 design, many of those T-38s are being used to train 5th gen fighter pilots as Red Air. And sometimes some rookie pilots would get shot down by half a century old trainer jet in F-22s! The airframe was small and manueverable enough to teach those rookie some lessons.
I would not say the F-5 was the major influence. The F-16, and to a lesser extent the F-14, was a much bigger influence. The American 4th gen fighters were public knowledge before the ink was wet on the MiG-29 and Su-27, which combined elements from them, and with validation from TsAGI, were incorporated into the new Soviet jets (including the hi/lo mix idea).
Su-27 had a different competitor in mind, F-15 Eagle, as it was developed as interceptor. Mig-29 as frontline fighter, was directly influenced by F-5 and its performance.

Of all the aircraft that I flew in my time in the Air Force, the F-5 was by far my favorite. It was partly because of the Aggressor mission but mostly due to the simple aircraft. When we flew against more sophisticated aircraft and beat them everyone knew it was due to superior airmanship. That said, it was our job to teach the young F-15 Eagle drivers how to beat us. After a few sorties, the best were doing just that.
As an F-5 pilot, what were your thoughts on the Northrop F-20 Tigershark?
Phantom-051-plane guy I would have loved to have flown the F-5G. The F-5E was capable of turning better, but the lack of thrust meant it bled off airspeed rather quickly. The bigger engine in the G model would probably have corrected that.
Hit me up if you play DCS man, the F-5 became pretty much my favorite module right off the bat, and it'd be kickass to learn a thing or two from the real deal.
I worked on the F5E at RAF Alconbury 520th Aggressor Squadron " Tigers", TDY all over Europe doing DACT training, mainly at Sardinia.
From 1978 to 1982 and my F5 was 1547.

sidecarnutz Lol whut? That makes no sense in this case. ANY altitude is going to top out at five figures for most jets and that includes metric which is lower numerically when comparing meters to feet. Even if you’re talking 100K+ feet for some super rocket plane, 550,000 of ANY measurement is an insanely high number. Plus it was missed or not noticed in review of the final edited product. Weird error.

Fun Fact: The M39 cannon used in the F-5 is a "revolver" cannon that was developed from the late WWII German MG213. What's a "revolver cannon" you ask? In order to save weight (and reduce torque) compared to a Gatling style cannon like the M61, the M39 instead had one barrel and five chambers that rotated. This produced a higher rate of fire than a traditional cannon, about 1.500 rpm (less than a Gatling which would be around 4,000 in early models and up to 6,000 in later versions). Part of this is intentional; the use of a single barrel means it can't withstand higher sustained fire rates without melting and also to conserve ammunition. Overall, it is similar in concept to the British ADEN and French DEFA cannons as well as the German BK27 used in the Tornado, Alphajet, and Swedish Gripen.
Nice. That high initial cyclic rate of fire makes it ideal for snapshots in a dogfight. In that sense more suitable than a gatling design, which takes time to spool up to max r.o.f.
and it has 2 of them doubling its rate of fire, and if there were a catastrophic malfunction with one, you still have the other.
I would add that guns have smoke deflectors which engage on half trigger. Looks pretty cool, but causes slight delay to fire so pilot have to "pre ready" them in snap shots
And the Oerlikon 35mm is a revolver cannon too.

I really enjoyed flying it as the "starter plane" in Ace Combat, I always thought the plane was well known since they made it the plane you start with, kinda cool its a low key jet
They were since they didn't have any success with South Vietnam unlike their counterpart in North Vietnam.
@@1973Hog I love the F-5, but by the time the -G came around it was too old to stand a chance. By that time the F-16 was easily available, and regardless of what engine you put in an F-5, a Viper is just better without being much more expensive. To name one, the F-16 can sustain 9gs, the F-5 is a ~7-8ish g aircraft.

A museum I volunteered at in California had a Norwegian F-5 with one of those arrestor hooks because they would land in extremely small landing zones and also gave them the ability to land on roads. The museum also had a map which listed every single nation that used the F-5. It was quite amazing to see the extent of its usage.
As crew dogs we often called it "tonka" toy. Had the pleasure of working on it as a crew chief (F-5B/E/F) models. I still have a "F-5G" Tigershark patch given by Gen Chuck Yeager.
Sorry for a 3 years late reply but that's interesting. I had a Tonka truck as a kid in the 80s/90s, but more interesting is the first time I've heard a plane other than a Tornado referred to as a Tonka!

My country Chile (Fuerza Aerea De Chile) FACH, used the F5 lll until recently. It had been upgraded , avionics, radar, attack capability. It was a fantastic interceptor. Very capable!

Indeed. Chile had some of the best, if not THE best F5's out there. They also had an in-flight refueling probe and could fire medium-rage BVR missiles.

Hi Bismarck, I'm from Honduras and our airforce bought 16 F-5E Tiger II and 1 F-5F back in the 70-80s. It quickly became an icon and it was feared by other airforces in Central America. Sadly they are no longer functional as of 2020, you can see them in action in a video I made back in 2018 on my channel. Such an iconic aircraft for me and my fellow countrymen, thank you very much for making such detailed videos. 💯

@@cypher9000 The one in DCS is an US variant, while the one in this video is a swiss version, and those have different radios and some sort of INS iirc.

I recall an interviewer asking Chuck Yeager which jet he enjoyed flying the most. After some reluctance to choose, he said the F-5.

Ask any Air Force pilot what their favorite plane is and there's a very good chance they say T-38.

Flew the F5's sister, the T-38. Lots of fun. There was a warning in the Dash-One about full stick deflection. At full deflection, the aircraft rolled 720 degrees/second. The Dash-One said recovery was difficult.
720 degrees per second? I bet it was. remaining conscious and not disoriented would have been difficult enough by itself...
@@DFX2KX Don't know. Never tried full stick deflection. But I can attest of my own experience that the T-38 rolled faster than anything else I've ever flown. It snapped into 60 degree banks.

Heads up to those who are interested in this airframe, the Fort Worth Aviation museum has T-38 Pit trainer inside their museum that you're allowed to sit in and mess with. Not exactly the same, but absolutely fantastic none the less.
Nevermind the slew of other aircraft out in their petting zoo area that you can just go and feel up for fun. Great place, can't wait for all this madness to blow over to visit them again.
could also invest a few bucks in DCS and fly a pretty damn accurate simulation of the jet.

@Joshua N. Ajang the G version is the closest to a modern 5 as is aval currently and I am a huge proponent of it for it in canuckistan locally built same as we did with the 5
also the 5 is more a 240sx (s13) than a miata.... an the JDM s13 more lkke the 20 since t wasn't underpowered like he NA version (s20det vs ka24e/ka23de)... the miata would be the mig21.. esp when tryin to shove more pwr in is very hard to do..possible but not easy esp given the frames limits are much lower than the 5/20 or mita/s13 by comparison)
Or you also could say new gripen g or f20 is a s15 w/an rb26dett dropped in and mate to the w/6spd tranny and stock hellical lsd :)

The F5 has even as the G aka Tigershark never hit the limits of its airframe and while I'm a big fan of the Gripen.. esp since it's currently in many ways the closest thing available to a modern day F5.. the fact is the $ spend on upgrading 5s would still be cheaper than even a locally built Gripen.. so it's no waste at all..
Never make the mistake of underestimating the 5... I've been on both ends with it and thats one of the reasons it to this day it is my all time to ever be in..
Now for Canuckistan on the other hand.. the asshat Libs wasted $$ destroying our old 5;s back in 05/06 since they are MORONS instead of keeping them in storage or actually spending some $ on the upgrades they would easily have been capable of. (Thats a long story.. and since the late 70s the morons in charge have been fukin the poor dog here.. the fact we got the FA18 instead of the F18L is a prime example.. nevermind not getting the F20 which we could have easily given our excellent relationship with Northrop at the time...
But al;l that history aside.. right now hands down of the 3 possible contenders avail for canuckistan the only smart move is the Gripen and to build it her in canuckistan much the same as we did the % way back when. The SH is a bloated pig at best and can barely do anything better than the original which was a huge FAIL for our needs.. and don;t even get me started on teh absolutely pathetic pos f35.. what a disaster it is overall.. nevermind for Canadas needs.. it would be so far beyond retarded to buy it for here it'd make the decision to buy the used subs look smart (vs teh unmitigate disaster it was in reality)

Always loved these. Compact, cheap, efficient design with nice aesthetics.
You forget to mention that Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has the most capable F5. They upgrade to became a 4th generation fighter. According to "The Warzone", "Brazil’s Upgraded Tiger IIs Might Be The Most Capable F-5s In The World". They also include a BVR missile and a HMD helmet. You can find a video showing how it works and the manufacturing of the helmet here in YT, with the title "ÁGATA 7 - Pilotos de caça da FAB e o capacete HMD".
I worked on these planes. Was in 57 CRS at Nellis AFB , we fixed the "Aggressor" planes, F5E s . Awesome little fighter , meaner than it looks. M1.6 , 60k alt.+ , can carry 4000lbs+.
Here in Thailand the F-5 is still used. It's one of my favorite fighters of all time!

Fantastic video! Thanks Chris. The US Navy purchased a number of ex-Swiss F-5s for their Aggressor squadron operations. I had the pleasure of seeing one a few years back and they are beautiful aircraft. Low-time air frame 2000 hours or so.

15:42 swiss Tigers had their hooks deactivated for a long time though. the emergency landing system was provided with a net that could be popped up on the runway. only with the introduction of the Hornet was the net retired (the Hornet was too big and heavy for it) and a cable system was installed.
México still is an F-5 operator.

Thank you so much for this video. I sat in the cockpit of the F-5 at the Western Museum of Flight in Torrance, California. There is a mystique with the F-5 that never gets old and it's such a very beautiful shaped airplane for sure. Flying it must be amazing.

After vitnam war F-5 Tiger II fight for Iranian air force in a 8 years of Iran and Iraq war and done many missions against Iraqi's army like Bombing refinery and fuel storage, oil supply lines and airbases, CAP and Close Combat Support
In one of air patrol missions an Iranian air force F-5 shootdown an Iraqi air force Mig 25 Foxbat( that Proved by both side of war.)

15:42 Arrestor hooks are fitted to perform an emergency stop. For example during a brake failure or hydraulic failure. Each end of military runways will have an arrestor cable for emergency use.
IIRC the arrestor hook was attached to a very large & strong leaf spring. EXTREMELY difficult to reset.
I get to see USN and USMC aggressor squadron F-5Ns on a fairly regular basis as they stop by my local airport to refuel while transiting from east coast to west coast. A pity that the Luftwaffe adopted the F-104 instead of the F-5. The Tiger would have been a great complement to the F-4 Phantom in Luftwaffe service.
Maybe would have had less pilots killed...
I had a discussion with somebody some weeks before and mentioned that too. Especially less teething more vehicles more flight training less maintenance for a largely understaffed/unexperienced maintenance crew. and u dont need to put a trailer on a lambo like they did with the coffin fighter.

Its definitely an underrated aircraft. The plane didnt have range but it was a run and gun fighter like the Mig21. A stable airframe, and missle capability. It was affordable. USAF was dumb not using it except for a trainer, which pilots love the T38 by the way. The Northrop Midget
My first duty station (1979) at Williams AFB, AZ had these among all the other models. I was a 462 ( weapons loader) and the new guys were always told to take out 200 rounds of 20mm ammo out to the B models. B models have no guns and they were on the far end of the flight line. Needless to say.... the ammo truck was not going to help either.... LOL These planes were known for their maneuverability and always did good at Red Flag at Nellis AFB, NV. These were a joy to work on unless you had to put an inboard fuel pylon on which always took 3 or 4 tries so they didn't leak.
I forgot to mention that Williams AFB at that time was a training base. The pilots flew their first jets there. They would start with the T-37 which was a side by side 2 seater which we nick named tweeters due to the sound they made. Then they would fly the T-38 which looks almost like a F-5 without the guns and I think NASA still uses them for chase planes. The F-5 was the first tactical fighter a pilot would fly. They were mostly used at the Gila bombing range with SU-22s and a full load of ammo. A SU-22 was a launcher that could fire 4 2.75 FFAR rockets and 6 BDU smoke bombs. They also practiced a lot with 500lb GP Mark 82 bombs. Some models had missile rails and used AIM-9 sidewinder infrared air to air missiles and were used to train for air to air combat. Sorry I wrote soooo much but memories came flooding back when I saw the plane.

And while I loved the 38 as well I spent more time in the 5 than the 38.. due to some very strange logistics shall we say as the short version... (which is also how we skipped the 37 and others entirely)
But that said.. as an overall comparison the 5b and t38 are insanely similar.. not 100% but damned close overall.
The F-5/T-38 has been & always will be a "Pilot's Aircraft". "Simple" in Operation & Maintenance, while being quite capable. It was unfortunate that politics killed the F-20 Tigershark. With the F-16 replacing the F-5/F-20 as the American Export Fighter of choice, the Tiger & Tigershark just flat ran out of supporters.

I was stationed at Williams AFB in AZ from ‘78-81. Our squadron was the 425th TFTS (Tactical Fighter Training Squadron) and we trained foreign pilots how to fly the F-5. We trained the Prince of Saudi and other airmen from NATO countries. We also trained their support folks who would maintain the fighter. The F-5 was great aircraft to fly and were the aggressors in the annual Red Flag exercises. The T-38 (modified F-5 for training our own pilots) was a duel seater and used for training only. Thanks much for bringing back great memories!!!

I just got the DCS module a couple of weeks ago, fantastic plane.
Simple, low maintenance, inexpensive... cost-effective.....A true fighter! I wish it had a chance to tango with a Mig during the Vietnam War...or any air war....

I once was hired to go to Bien Hoa to inspect F5 of all kinds (F5A/B/E/F- some still armed with yellow nosed bullets...) AT-37 (with Mini gun in the nose), Huey choppers etc, and some of the AftoForms showed they hab been used during the Sino-Vier war of 1979...
I have a serious love for light-weight, small, well engineered things. Even if they don't necessarily excel. For example? The 1.5L honda v12 used in their 1965 F1 car. Such a small little engine.

All current US Navy and Marine Corps F-5s are ex Swiss.
I got the F-5E in DCS, because I figured if I ever one day became a fighter pilot, it would be the closest thing to a good T-38 sim to train with at home. I immediately fell in love with it because all its simple 1960s era avionics and flight controls are immediately familiar to me. I work on the KC-135 aircraft for a living, and all the physical switches and dials in that jet's block 40 configuration are so similar. The layout and controls of the F-5 were quick and easy to figure out because of this.
At 13:47 it says "hp: 4,600 lbf" which doesnt make sense. That should be "thrust: 4,600 lbf (which at a speed of 1,700 km/h develops 6,490 hp)"

And it is still delivering! Many countries still fly them and some even are modernizing them to bring them up to Gen 4 technology to digital cockpit, better radar and weapon systems! It is a shame that US did not capitalized on this amazing air frame. The same bad decisions they are making with A-10!

Yeah, the airframe is excellent, and it will really benefit from upgraded avionics and weapons systems, not necessarily fly-by-wire (but since I have never flown one, I have no way to know how well it handles), but glass cockpits and compatibility with modern weapons systems can indeed give it 4th gen. Capabilities and a longer life.
Also upgrading its powerplant, but that was probably one of the first things done...

That said for Canada thats an extremely good thing.. since the 35 even with more years of fixes than some aircvraft's entire lifespan it still suffers from a list of fatal and/or unfixable flaws that is staggering.. and thats not even touching on teh simple fact that even if it could actually do as was originally promised it would still be a piss poor pick for Canadas actual needs.
The remaining 2 contenders are in order. a bloated bag of crap that again is a poor choice and cannot even with max upgrades applied it fails to meet the actual needs.. much teh same as its predecessor that shares its name but not much else realistically (the SH in case you didnt know) and was only made by lying to congress! The last and by far best choice for Canada is the Gripen which not only meets all of our actual needs it excels at them and goes far far beyond..
But hey if you want to continue drinking the LHM koolaid and munching on the endless load of bullshit they keep feeding the public re the 35.. My father was a pilot of the F-5E in South Korean Air Force. He took me to the HQ of the squadron he was leading and I had a chance to sit on the seat in the cockpit. I still remember the scent in the cockpit more than its shape...

19:15 I love the back-up bank indicator on this panel. A simple bead in a curved tube - nothing mechanical or electronic can go wrong with it. So perfect a design it's been conserved for decades.

Yes evolved into F20 a faster upgraded F5e. Beautiful looking plane.
But unfortunately for the F-20 the F-16 was developed and procured by the end of the 70s.
in some form it evolved to the f-20, to the YF-17 , to the f-18. you can see this as a Familytree

Worked in maintenance and overhaul of the Canadair licence built F5 used by Canada and the Netherlands. It was a fine (maintenance friendly) aircraft to work on. To extend its life in the RCAF, it received structural strengthening and re- skinning of the wings and vertical fin, the substitution of a steel dorsal longeron for the original aluminum unit, replacement of rear fuselage formers and landing gear, and the reinforcement of the tunnel brackets. The horizontal tailplanes were entirely replaced, as were the windshield, fuel tanks, flexible hydraulic hoses, After the aircraft was completely rewired and repainted. and finally completed. Our test pilot would then take it up to the practice area ,shake it ,roll in on its back and pick up any left over hidden screws, washers and other FOD off the canopy while flying upside down.. It was a good day when nothing was found.
