Holden in Australia designed and built their own V8 engines before they started using the LS engines in 1999. The Holden 5.7 litre made the same power and more torque than the LS1 that replaced it. The Holden engine didn't rattle and burn oil like the LS engines did. The engines used in GTOs and G8s were not even built in the USA, they are a product of Canada.
Holden don't currently re-badge any Chevrolets as Holdens. All cars rebadged as Holdens are now either Opel or Daewoo, and in the past Toyota and Suzuki. There has only ever been one model American GM car sold in Australia since 1965. That was the 1998-2001 Suburban, sold with Holden badges (and even that was built in Mexico, not the USA). The Holden Volt and maybe the Holden Malibu will be the first rebadged Chevrolets when and if they are released later this year.
