How I've gotten where I am today in Photography

- I get the question so much. "How is it that you just started photography not even a year ago, but you've managed to progress so fast?" In my opinion, everyone is born with their own natural talent, but it definitely helps when you have someone experienced in the field to push you forward. I hope y'all enjoy this one.

Just amazing thank you!!!
Gotta give credit where it's due!
I can't seem to access your workshop.
See, my biggest set back is that I'm trying to do everything alone. Thank you for sharing.
Cancel that mentality. Be willing to be helped. It will change the game. ;)
Are you trying to do everything alone because you want to or you just don't know how to find people to help? That's where I've been in my photography journey in the last 4 years. I've had to trial and error constantly. Watching many videos which us great but everyone has different method, opinion and experience to share. It's hard to draw from all those sources and develop as an artist. Also, tons of different subjects and compositions. I know I've gotten better (not amazing lol) but it's been a challenge.
I feel the same!
@@Cid_Coletti For me, it's been a little bit of both. For me to have been doing this for less than 2 years, I know I'm pretty good. But for some reason, all the praise I've received made me feel embarrassed to ask my peers AND instructors (while I was still in school) for any assistance. Now that we haven't been at school physically, it makes it harder for me to know how to find other photographers outside of school.
@@JrayBerry the fact that you think you are pretty good shows that you have a lot to learn my friend keep going through your jounrey you will look abck at your work form now and realize it was not as good as you thought because you would have gotten to the level that you thought you were at right now
“You can’t do it by yourself, you need a team.” The 3rd time I heard this week.
That’s the universe telling you something 🙌🏾
I think most impressive is how you used that opportunity after the fact, even though initially it might have been a struck of luck for you to be there. And props to Tyler on taking a chance on you. Incredible stuff
Thanks so much Karolina.
Tylers Class is. amazing. It's advice i wish i knew earlier. I started using his advice regarding printing, framing, and showing people how you want to perceived. In the last week i have made my biggest Fine Art sale to date. Instead of using an IKEA frame i am taking most of that sale to get the piece re framed professionally. The rest is going towards my medium format camera savings.
That’s so awesome to hear Bruce!
Who would have thought Mike Gray got his start in photography because of Jake from State Farm hahaha great story bro! I’ve been interested in how you got your start for a while!
Haha crazy world man.
Dude, this makes me choke up, excited, overwhelmed, inspired and motivated.
I love that.
This was inspiring man. As photographers it's so inevitable to go through the idea of needing better gear to accomplish something. The thought process of simplifying and learning to work with what you have before stepping into difficult equipment is something that I've taken to heart lately and I appreciate you preaching more about this.
Thanks a lot for watching Steven.
I like when photographers are humble and are honest, and say I was not sure what I was doing but I got better, this is exactly correct you can only get better with practice and observation of others - I am not exactly sure I always know what I am doing - i have ideas, I experiment, but also learn from so many others like yourself Mike that share the knowledge and make very interesting content to watch, enjoy and learn. Happy Easter
Thank you so much for that.
Great to hear the humility... I like how aware your blessings too, keep using them and do great things!
Thanks for the inspo bro, such a great channel. After 4 years I'm finally making a living out of my work as a photographer and it's pretty tuff but at the same time makes you grow as a person so much
Thanks so much Abel. I appreciate you.
I have been SO uninspired with all the noise around me for the past couple of years, but then I stumbled on Tyler’s account on IG, then RUclips, which also led me to your RUclips. The content both of u make is setting my urge to create on fire again. Binged the workshop - which resulted in a moodboard with some fabulous ideas, and me shooting one of our H&M campaigns of film, next month on Mallorca. Keep on doing what ur doing, it’s so genuine and good.
Thank you so much Alia.
For the past 2 years I have been shooting and recently got into film during the beginning of the pandemic I have been wanting to find a mentor. I feel like this class will get me close to having one as you mentioned and it really has drawn my interest. After watching your video and seeing how much Tyler has helped you, I have decided to purchase this class but also because I want to push my photography to another level. Thank you for making this video Mike and im just super stoked to learn from someones work I truly admire.
I appreciate you taking that next step Jonathan! You will truly be happy you did. Let us know how you feel about it once you’ve completed it!
Great story. Props to you for the dedication and props to Tyler for sharing the opportunity. Oh yeah, what kind of tea are we having today?
Thanks Chris! haha Got a tea surprise for you next video.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I currently have been using a Pentax K1000 which has been great , but recently bought a Minolta x-700 which id coming today and that you used one too is so exiting to me. I love film and digital but there's something about film that digital just can't portray and being that I'm in no position to have all the expensive gear and the fact that he "Tyler" was kind enough to take you under his wing is awesome. Your story is inspiring.
This one is so great from Mike and Tylor that will last forever for other photographers to learn and be better …🙏millions thanks
Poetic that a simple lightbulb led to your realization that photography doesn't need the fanciest equipment! Great video as always Mike!
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I've wondered through watching your content how you developed so much insight into fine art photography as quickly as you have. This is great. I'll certainly see about getting a workshop.
You won't regret it.
Wow Mike.. This was beautiful, i finally get to hear your story of how you started. I’ve been following your channel since the beginning and this was just so beautiful. As a 26 year old guy who just started photography you inspire me, i even have my notification on whenever you put out new videos. You’re the only one i have it on too lol. Thanks brotha for inspiring me/us & i’ll deffo purchase Tyler Shields workshop! ❤️✊🏾
Thank you! Let me know how you feel about it.
I will be looking into Tyler's workshop. I've been shooting what catches my eye for about 6 years. I've looked into workshops by Mark Hemmings, Joel Grimes and Serge Ramelli. Your channel has great content! Keep up the outstanding work.
Now I understand how you’ve taken off, in one year, like a jet fighter leaving a carrier deck! Regardless of your desired specialty mentors are essential in this business. Is finding one luck or destiny? Maybe a little of both. I stumbled into my first mentor when I was 15. Rather than brush me off, he took me under his wing. Forty five years later I still boil with the same passion I did on day one. Keep up the great work man! Learning and giving back never stops. Peace.
Thanks amazing Terry. Thank you!
Mike, keep killing the game. I'm glad I stumbled across your channel I've definitely been enjoying everything that you've been putting out!
I truly appreciate that Timothy!
So much learned from watching you and Tylers workshop, keep it coming Mike!
I’m glad you gained something from it lil bro!
Awesome
tylershields looking forward to learning more!🙌🏼
Purchased the work shop and pulled the trigger on my first film camera ‘canon 1-V.’ Now I’m planning a shoot with fake diamonds and a banana while also learning to load 35mm film blind folded! So much to digest. Thank ya’ll for the content.
Amazing. Thank YOU. Let me know what you think!
Really appreciate your message bro! Hope you move on to bigger and better things
I love photography, it is my passion since I was a child, I never had money to buy a camera, last year my mom gave me a nikon D3500, and in a month, I won an international photography contest, and now I could buy a sony 6400 and a 35mm 1. 8, with a tripod, and a stabilizer, I know it is not the best of the best, but I learned without a camera, only my phone camera, then a compact digital camera, and this month I sold 20 photos, now I can not buy the workshop, but I know that this passion will give me that workshop, cus I feel that there is so much to learn.
Such a great story man. Keep pressing forward!
The way you look at photography inspires me to keep it real. Trying to make it all “the best” can make you blind to creativity. Thank you for the inspiration and I look forward to following your growth.
I appreciate that!
Happy for you bro, love how your content keeps getting better and better! All the best 🙌
Thank you so much Nuno!
Great video. Glad you find the right mentor for you. Keep shinning.
Thank you! Will do!
I'm honestly so jealous of your career path and access to Tyler but you've made the most of it and keep getting better! You Jake and Tyler are my favorite squad to keep up with. Was listening to Tyler on Rick Glassman's pod talk about how Robin Williams told him to never stray from creating art and to avoid doing things just for the money and man that resonated with me. Looking forward to the day I can cross paths with you three at a gallery opening as I'm in this niche for the long run too.
Yes 🙌🏽 and thank you needed to hear this
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Excellent video & information. I'm a professional musician with a huge love for photography & there's so many parallels between the two. I always tell my student's it's not the instrument or amp, the sound is in your hands. In photography I use what I can afford, many manual lenses, which make me learn to use what I have to achieve a good end result. In all artistic endeavors, this is key.
Thank you for that.
@@MikeGrayFilm My pleasure, I love your work & just subscribed to your channel.
Love your story... always great to have a giving mentor, such a rare but beautiful opportunity.
Thanks Leslie
@@MikeGrayFilm More than welcome, Mike. Learning from you in each video.
It’s true that many high caliber artists don’t like to give up the jewels to the young, scrappy and hungry. I wish it wasn’t like that, but I’m glad you found a dope mentor in Tyler. Where can I find this course that you’re talking about?
indeed. go to www.tylershields.com and it should be under the workshop section!
Funny! Tyler Shields only came onto my radar after I started following you. 😉
nice
Mike! I invested in Tyler’s course, i LOVE IT! The video title I glanced over about confidence was what made me not think twice. Thanks for sharing this on your channel!
I’m glad to hear that!!
Officially binged your whole channel. Immaculate vibes, top tier quality, fantastic photography, big fan homie 👏🏽
Keep killing it
I appreciate you bro!
Been waiting on a new video, you didn’t disappoint 🔥🔥
Thanks for tuning in Jake. 🙌🏾
thanks for the uplift, i needed that :)
can´t wait to create something
Go for it!
Thank you for this video, you're an example for all of us trying to do what we love just like you
I appreciate it Miguel. Keep going!
Very impressive, you’re killing it!
Thank you Jen!
All I can say is thank you to you and Tyler man you guys motivate me extremely with my work I just bought a Pentax 6x7 all because of you guys can’t wait to put it to work
That means a lot man.
I've never done a workshop and around my area a lot of the photographers are very secretive about there craft. I just purchased the workshop. I want as much knowledge and up my game as much as I can. Love the channel and thanks for sharing as much as you do.
Thanks Bryan. Enjoy that workshop. It will change your life.
Let me know how you like it
same. here in Houston its many that just love to shoot nude with no intent or story. orange and teals. that whole thing. I really am excited to get the workshop this week. let me know what you think!
@@tylershieldsvideos I really enjoyed it. The practical fundamentals and your personal stories are great. Love your thoughts on prep and practice its something you don't hear people talk about. And really the biggest take away right now for me is it solidified my feelings about my photography and art. Working on planning and prepping a project I've had the idea for for the last year. It will be one of the biggest projects I've ever done and I need to do it. Thanks for putting out a great workshop it really has me pumped and has poured gasoline on the fire of my photography.
Great story and respect to Tyler for giving you chance. Keep the excellent content coming
Will do. thank you.
Thanks for sharing your story Mike! I wish I had a mentor, something to be grateful about for sure!
I appreciate you watching David. It will come!
While I know it’d be easy to dog pile about how lucky you were, but honestly I’m nothing short of proud of your growth and ability to convert on such an opportunity to build a style for yourself in such a short span of time. I will say that my experience/journey is far different as it relates to reception when it comes to experienced photographers. I personally have reached out to many vets in the game to talk shop and seek out advice, but they would fall flat and go ghost. This isn’t a pity party or anything, but I feel like it’s not as realistic to encourage people to seek a scenario like yours (not saying that’s what you’re doing). I believe we all need to be trying to cultivate a more inclusive community. I love your work and your content and I hope to see you continue paving your way through the industry. 🤙🏾
Thank you man
Great video. I’m def buying the tutorial. Keep up the good work brother you are also an inspiration for a lot of us!
I truly appreciate you.
Amazing video! Great job Mike!
Thank you!
Gain so much from you and tyler workshop i have been shooting 35mm digital my whole life but after seeing you and tyler i just purchase my first film medium format thank for all the inspiration!!
That’s awesome!
Love to see this man. Legitimately great video to share for people looking to grow within the industry though laying down stubbornness on trying to do everything themselves. Humility comes before growth
That’s real. I appreciate you Thomas.
Man I NEEDED this.
I’m glad you received it well Bailey
Dude loved this it’s always nice seeing how others started in photography
Thanks.
Awesome glad you made. Thank you for what you do. Inspired.
Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your experience! Was really insightful to learn about your growth within photography! Serendipity is real!
Thank you for watching!
Cool -You’re really ready to set out on your own now!!
Thanks David!
WELL SPOKEN!!!
Got to be!
Great video homie. Good insight and humbling. :) Thank You!
thanks a lot Jonathan!
Gonna check it!
awesome!
Really loved this video man. It’s so amazing that you get to learn from one of the greats. I’ve had a few mentors over the years but have been on my own for the past 3 and could definitely use another.
I'm glad you could relate Liam.
Great video bro, inspiring. 🤙🏼
Thanks John.
This is great bro! This is just the beginning bro, great things ahead! Big ups to Tyler!!!
Thanks my brother 🙌🏾
Thank you!
This is so excellent, love your perspective, super inspiring stuff. I have really been enjoying your content lately. I purchased Alec Soth's "Photographic Storytelling" workshop from Magnum and can't recommend it enough, really incredible insight. I think that finding other's work and constantly studying your own work helps me to stay inspired. Also I feel that you have to create work consistently and as you said, chase inspiration in the moment. Awesome stuff man!
Thanks a lot Ryan!
This is truly inspiring photography content on the tube man this is amazing.
Thank you so much.
i love you man, your team and your work !! such an inspiring peoplee
Thank you!
Loved this fam. So proud of you bro!...and inspired!
Thank you family!!!
Cool! Love Tyler’s works and interviews. Was wondering when it would come out. BUT a discount code will be nice, 😂
What a great experience to be told! I wish I had a great photographer or video producer who can hire me as an assistant! Though in my country that's a long shot. I'm inspired by you!
Thanks!
Love you brotha! Keep killing it out there
Thanks so much Jacob!
Fantastic video - very inspiring
Thank you.
A light build moment, Great video.
Thanks
you might have just sold me on some of the workshops
It's a great opportunity Kev.
'you don't need the best stuff to make the best art'... but a Pentax 6x7 definitely helps a lot ! 😆
I'm just playin tho, great vid honestly
I can’t disagree with you haha
I’ve been struggling for so long to find my team/tribe within photography. It’s my goal for the next year to find likeminded individuals or even a mentor for support and growth.
I always say... "it's not what you know, but who you know"
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Man keep going! This is great story!
I appreciate you.
these videos are so well mic'd
Thank you
This is so inspiring!
I’m so glad you connected to it, Harold!
Aaaaaaaaah, so thaaaaaat’s how you hooked up with Tyler - yeah, sorry I know I’m a year behind the curve and still playing catch up, but as I said before, I’m working my way through your videos from the start. Still doesn’t answer one big question I had - did you have any background in the visual arts, in any form, prior to that chance meeting? Or are you also saying you also picked up all your photoshop and video skills from Tyler and hard practice in just under one year? Tyler clearly is a great teacher (no I haven’t seen the workshop yet), but there’s no doubting your natural eye for what works visually. As they say here in the UK, ‘You can’t polish a turd!” 🙌🙌🏿
Thanks for this it is hugely helpful!!
I'm so glad!
Where can I find the photos used in this video
amazing vid man!
Thanks Owen.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I want my own Tyler, damn.....
He’s out there! haha
awesome
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thank you for this! Definitely needed the inspiration. Is there a deadline for the workshop?
Thank YOU for watching. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't wait TOO late haha ;)
How long will the workshop be available for purchase?
Not sure. But, I wouldn't wait too long haha
wow
More videos 📹 please
will the 10$ lighting portrait you mentioned be a vlog?
It won't be a vlog, but you can catch it in the workshop!
@@MikeGrayFilm I see - thank you
"push the red button"
Hahaha
I'm still here in shock ever since Fujifilm stopped producing 400H
Anyways, GREAT JOB!
You and me both!
Thank you!
Unfortunately University (Collage) is not about hands on experience. Its about getting an "adequate" teacher. Who may or may not even care, teaching you the basics and then proceeding to give you mediocre experience with things in their way which most of the time happens to be stuck in 1980 from when they learned photography. (ie they haven't even progressed at all since they learned and only got the job on sheer years alone).
What you are getting from Tyler is what you should be learning in collage. But collages are so inadequate when it comes creative careers its not even funny. They take what you could learn in 3 months on YT and stretch it into 3 years and slap a $10,000 per year price tag on it.
A Nice video that's very interesting as usual! :-) Thank you, friend! ;-)
Thank you
imma fly out to LA and shadow you on a shoot bro. you legit pathed the way for me as a black creative to pursue film.
I appreciate that Tony. Means a lot!
Mike, we need a Tyler Shields full photography course.
You got one :). Link is in the description!
I wish I had a mentor and a team 😔 how to I find those people...
It will come. Just focus on creating the best art you can. It will attract the right people 🙌🏾
