The DB-601/605 were good engines. But not necessarily technological marvels. They had many shortcomings, the needle type main and rod bearings being the biggest drawback.
Their greatest success, and also achilles heel, was the direct fuel injection (similar to a diesel, or Bosch GDi found on VW and Fords).
Direct injection provided substantial knock-resistance for their poor quality fuel, and also sustained negative G power.
But the limited capacity of an engine driven pump meant they could never add more fuel than the pump could supply. This severely limited the potential of the engine later in the war, when American engines had climbed to 2,400-2,800hp in some cases. Where the Daimler was locked in at its original power range, American and British engines were not. Not limited by fuel, or bearings, as American developed silver/copper/steel replaces Babbitt/tin/coper shells. The DB-601 had serious issues with their needle bearings.

@@max420thc You sound like we only got to see K4 and G10 as decent planes and the rest fought biplanes and shot down Lagg-3s. In other words you don't seem to know what you are talking about. 109 had more than decent rivals throughout it's lifespan. Even the earlier Emil models fought Spitfires and G6 constantly went up against P-51 Mustangs despite having to carry 20mm gondolas to shoot down B-17 bombers. Despite the gondola disadvantage against a plane like P-51 which could literally keep on accelerating forever at high altitude, 109 managed to score a lot of kills during dogfights. Same goes for earlier engagements between the BF109 F and Spitfire Vb. 109 F proved to be superior to the Spitfire Vb and they were quite even during earlier engagements (Emil and 303 Spitfires). Those russian junks werent dummies either. La-7 and 9 were decent threats. Best pilots and aces flew 109s. Not because they could unfairly go up against biplanes but because it was a fantastic aircraft in the hands of someone who knew how to treat it. So his comparison was spot on. Yours however? Not one bit.

Those that claim the Mustangs and spitfires were better just simply don't know the history of these aircraft's.
If you compare the latest Bf109, Mustangs and Spitfires, the Bf109 k4 was superior in almost every aspect from speed, climbing, turning and firepower.
In it's history, the Bf109 as you already stated, has shot down more than any other aircraft in military history.
Think about this one for moment, the FW 190 shot down more planes than the Mustang, Spitfire, Hellcat and P38 combined and the Bf109 shot down twice as many as the FW 190!
The top 100 aces of all times did their deeds flying the Bf109, 5000 pilots earned the title of ace in a Bf109.
It wasn't the idea of superior fighters from the allies that beat the Luftwaffe, it was the lack of supplies and resources that starved the Luftwaffe.

Seeing the 109 taxing from various angles and then take off makes you realise just how small the fin and rudder are - and the need to get the tail up quickly (on the take off run) for directional control. With ever increasing horse power from newer versions of the DB engine, you can see the need for the later taller fin and rudder (and lengthened tail wheel oleo) on later versions for some extra directional control. Awesome sounding engine!

BF 109, from before the war to the end of the war was a significant piece of military hardware and could hold its own against the best. Not a testament to the Nazi system, it was a testament to engineering. We need more of these beautiful aircraft, if somebody would actually put the effort to reconstructing the original pattern engines they would be even nicer. But who knows, in 2012 I did a short stint as one of Dieter Zetsches bodyguards, and he hit ask me about what I thought of Detroit. I told him there was probably as much Engineering know-how in the city of Detroit then in the rest of the country combined. And he commented that he was looking for something to show off daimler's engineering promise. I suggested that he either build a fully functional spec BF 109 Messerschmitt, or at least build the engine for one of them or more. Has no one had ever seemed to accomplish it since World War II.

The other drawback was that was only armed a pair of, 12.7-mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose and an additional pair of 7.7-mm Breda-SAFAT in the wings. Generally speaking it was a robust airplane and by Italian standards it was very modern. The Finnish liked it and achieved quite a lot of victories...

@@palomino73 Oh yes. You have to know the warbird you plan on flying front to rear, and top to bottom. Because of the narrow gear, breaks are key. Usually, some slight pressure is applied to keep it straight. Very touchy.

@@Bluenose352 I read about this "peculiarity" of the BF 109 in Toliver & Constable's Biography of Erich Hartmann, "The blond knight of Germany" (German title: Holt Hartmann vom Himmel). I still wonder though, as to why the 109's best contender of the first days of war, the Spitfire, seemingly didn't have the same issues - even though her gears were set up evenly narrow.

I bet you when they launched on an interception mission in a seasoned pilots hands that thing must have climbed at speeds you can’t imagine! Absolute masterpiece of early aviation engineering.

@@jayfrank1913 Go look for "Greg's airplanes and automobiles" channel and look up his video on this very topic. While there are many elements to the answer, it mostly boils down to the fact that the German's couldn't run as much boost due to their low octane fuel.

@@jayfrank1913 That my have just been down to the fact that the Germans lacked the rare earths necessary to make components that had the tensile strength of the ones that the allies were using. In the end though, it's moot. if you don't have high octane fuel, you can only run so much boost, so there is no point in further developing your intake manifold pressurization system.
