Fully agree with the "get on the course and test" theory but in reality it isn't always possible. I was lucky enough to have my club fitter allow me to take an M2 away and try it on the range and course as I wasn't 100% sure about it in my fitting, but not everyone will have that chance. If fitters are based at golf courses, they should definitely offer on course testing as part of the process.
Graham W I've bought clubs in the USA several times over the past 20 years: 30 days no quibble refund. So you get fitted and play the club for 30 days on course. Club not suiting/oesn't work? Return to the store. No issue re: face marks etc. So why do we not get not similar opportunities in UK? Clearly manufacturers accept this in the USA....
Just updated mine from the Ping G. I gained about 2-3 Mph on club head speed and about 6 more yards carry. Hit some drives 275-280 yards. The smaller head looks better at address and the sound and feel are amazing. We have similar swing speeds so I love your videos.
Have been playing ping clubs for 10 years plus. Have had to deal with a srixon wr 9 degree driver for a few years but have just ordered an 8.5 LST with a project x hzrdus black 6.5 75g shaft and can't wait to get my hands on it. Have an aggressive swing and the fitting showed this is the right set up for me. 👍👍
I think your spot on about fittings! On the course everything changes. Even altitude can effect ball flight. I've returned many clubs due to this reason. Your reviews on course are hands down the most real time accurate tests. Keep it up mark!
Mark, can you please post a segment about fitting and it's perceived issues as you mentioned in the 9:40 mark? I'm a big believer in club fitting but if you argue that clubfitting is of no benefit, please give your take on this issue. Thanks Mark!
Love the video. I'm currently gaming a Ping G30 SF Tec. I would certainly consider the G400 in the similar spec. I don't know that there is enough new that would merit replacing my driver though. I have spent the equivalent of new driver in a series of lessons this year rather than equipment.
Brilliant video as usual mark, only problem I see is that if you went for a fitting most of the time the fitter is fully booked up an you don't have the time to go on the course to test these clubs out so have to work off of the dry ball data
I love how you do on course testing. Thank you and your crew Mark for doing solid reviews and analysis on a consistent basis. Very helpful for clarity on which product may best suit each individual's golf game. Lets get some eagles!~
Like how you hit towards the trees on the 1st strikes, it sure gives you a frame of reference. When I got fitted last time I hit about 8 different drivers and narrowed it down to 2. We where hitting across the 1st fairway towards the 7th green with a bunch of tree's at about the 200yd mark. I had a SLDR and Cobra Biocell Pro, the Cobra was the better numbers. But the ball flight looked like I was skimming the top of the trees. The SLDR was clearing the trees easily and because I had the trees as a reference point I could try moving the ball around a bit. It made it obvious that even the though the Cobra was longer I would struggle getting it up quickly. Easy decision in the end. And still got it 3 years later :O)
I know this video is well over a year old but in regards to custom fitting, last week I decided to have a custom fit of Mizuno ST180 & GT180, I was curious and these are said to be low spin heads, I play a Ping G and really like it but I launch it very high with hardly any run out, and I know my technique is really the issue but if I could find something that would improve my launch and run with my technique as is (cause it's bloody hard to change! Especially at 55 years old) I would be very interested. So the fitting was done and the choice was GT180 with a Tensei orange 50 gram stiff, the numbers on trackman were all pretty good, spin was down by about 500-600 rpm, ball speed up about 5-10 mph on average and carry was a bit better, as we hit my Ping during the fitting as well for comparisons, so with all the settings in place I took it to the course the next day with high hopes, used 2 balls that were the same and marked them for each club, luckily when I made a poor swing with one I also made a poor swing with the other and the same with good swings so it was a pretty perfect test between the drivers, after 4 holes I was surprised that the properly fitted Mizuno had only got past the off the shelf Ping once and was behind about 5 yards on the others, although it was a lower better looking flight, I then decided to play extra drives, even teeing up in the fairway on par 5's to get in as many drives as I could, the last 6 holes I was hitting 3 balls with Mizuno and 1 with Ping, on the good strikes I walked up seeing 2 balls further ahead by 10-15 yards and fully expected them to be both Mizuno but only 1 was and 1 was Ping, the 2 further back were Mizuno, in the end the Ping had seen off the challenger and I admit I was surprised. I don't hit the ball very far so am always searching for distance, less carry more roll, or same carry but with roll. From the trackman fitting I was 100% convinced I was going to see about an extra 10 yards of carry and about the same amount in run, so not shooting for the moon but a realistic expectation on my part I believe, I was very surprised this was not the result and even more happy I was able to test this club on the course before slapping down a wad of cash then being very disappointed, the whole experience was a bit of an eye opener. Having said all that I did get fit for a new set of irons about 3 months ago, nothing really wrong with the old ones but, you know sometimes you just change, I had a great fitting, these feel better and I love them, but I don't hit them any further, just the same as before, but I'm still happy with them :)
Great review Mark! I'm gaming the i25 Racing stripes driver and the smaller head is really helping me with forgiveness. Much easier to hit than a bigger headed driver. Looking forward to see the G400 iron review. High on my wish list (now gaming G20).
Thx for the true on course testing. Like the sound also. I think that's because of the smaller head. I think most players.., pros & amateurs are a bit tired of the 460 cc monster heads. Ping is on to something and it wouldn't surprise me to see other companies follow Ping and maybe even go a bit smaller to 425/430. Smaller head produces faster swing speed. I need to ck these out asap. Thx Mark
Love the smaller head size. Love the look. Love the 3 options. Love the improved sound. Will buy when the next model comes out and this one's discounted.
I think the smaller head is a great idea. I'm a higher handicap but that is purely down to my driver inconsistency but I play a m1 2017 440 and since this I've found the handicap is slowly coming down and with the smaller head I personally find I hit the middle more often. Be great to compare against something a little more forgiving.
awesome to see 2 different players with three different clubs. great test. great to see real errors. i feel a bit better about some of the appalling shots ive hit when testing new clubs.
MrJoshthenosh but their club head speed and loading patterns don’t change that much. I would agree that is it up to the fitter and the player to agree what are their tendencies and decide if what’s shown that day would work out.
@@benngm the main assumption is they consistently golf at a high handicap. If you're new and a high handicap, getting fitting can be detrimental when you haven't even figure out your swing yet.
Just purchased the G400 SFT at 12°loft 55 gram regular shaft. I'm 57 and about an 18 Handi-cap (very amature). I average about 230 on most drivers, not a big hitter (shoulder surgery) in 2015, lost about 25 to 30 yards on most of my drives, and irons (shoulder never healed properly (arthritis) but hit all 3 of the pings in the simulator with senior shafts, regular, and stiff. My better numbers were with the SFT and a regular shaft, had a few at 240+, which made me smile, and my average swing speed is about 83mph, but with the G400 my swing speeds were about 88mph, and a few in the 90's. I hope this helps on the actual course, but I walked out of the store pumped up. Thanks
if you had said to me 20yrs ago I would be playing a near full bag of Ping clubs it would have laughed but the fact is they just make fan good clubs!! love my G driver but the smaller head is an interesting change!
Are you able to point us in the direction of a golf club where we can turn up, ask for all the latest drivers and the go hit them on their course without members getting a little bit annoyed? Great idea if everyone had the access to new clubs that you do but for us mere amateurs it is practically impossible to test all clubs on course. Am I better buying off the shelf and taking my chances or going to get fit and at least having some numbers to back up my purchase?
I love Ping as a company. I have the G30 LS which goes a long way, but after a dozen hits on the range I have a headache. I love Mizuno as a company also. I am looking forward to the JPX900 I have ordered; it is the LS tec, the SF tec and the regular driver and more all in the same club. In my opinion Ping doesn't have enough adjustment. I understand many shouldn't have too many bells and whistles on their driver but what about when you order the wrong driver and you are stuck with it? Say you are a fader and you get the SF tec, and then over time you start overdrawing your drives?
I agree that on course data is more relevant however for the ordinary joe it's difficult to get a club to test on the course away from the retailer or driving range shop for instance!
Excellent vid. I can't tell you how many times I've hit a club well on the launch monitor only to have it perform poorly on the course and vice versa as well. Sadly most shops here don't let you take demos out on the course ☹️
I'm gaming a SRIXON Z335 DRIVER. Best thing around IMO but that also has a 440cc head with Max Moi. Sadly it hasn't been reviewed by Mark, but the smaller head has been 'nicked' by Ping 😉
Its all about wind! Would the low spin cut through wind better. Do the 3 against a strong headwind? In fact do 10 drivers against headwind with same ball. See if low spinners are better?

an extra 10 yards isn't worth the extra $$$$$$ for me . I'll stick to the G30 LS . Heck I took out my Old Ping Eye 2 laminated driver with an Aldila HM-40 graphite shaft 3 weeks ago and hit it just 10 yards behind my Ping G30LS .
Funny you get Dan and Mark very similar carry if you use Flightscope optimiser, 252 against 257, rather than 242 and 262. Suppose it's all about who's got the best algorithm with these launch monitors!
The SFT club you tested was a 10 degree loft , the standard club appeared to be an 9 degree and the LST was, I think 8.5 degrees. If you had used the 10.5 degree standard G400 (turned back to 10 degrees) and the 10 degree LST, would the distances have been closer to those you achieved with the SFT? The weight on the LST is further forward which will reduce spin but the standard club and the SFT both appear to have the weight about the same distance from the face which I would think would keep spin numbers similar.
I have the Ping G and am very happy with it, but appreciate the review. I don't know if I missed it, but could you just do a video on how clubs are supposed to sit at address? Some of the shots from this review looked like the G400 were really toed up and I haven't had that with my G. Thanks!
any difference to your dry ball data from the Ping G which is still retailing at a high price. I put it in the bag (replacing a Titleist 913) in January. Not being suckered in to upgrading anytime soon..
Just got fitted and bought the g400 standard and wow wow wow love this club . Mark Is there enough of a difference / advantage over the G Driver to make a change and upgrade??? Son got the G Driver last year and loves it. He tried the new G400 last week at friends golf shop and did not care for it. He did not like the smaller face and it did not out preform his G Driver when he tested it.
just returned an Epic as I tested both, got a bit more distance and was persuaded to go with the epic, on the course was a different matter, too inconsistent with it, now got the G400 and will see how it goes
Interesting I was checking out drivers tonight at the local range the Ping G400 performed best for me!! Still not sure though may go for second opinion, as you say what can you tell from a dozen balls hit from a shed?
Like the looks but is that what it is come too? I mean are we buying drivers and clubs for looks or are we buying them for great performance. That's why I love your vlogs, I want to find something other than my R11s but I don't think I'm going to find anything better. Am I wrong?
Have to ask the, if you hit all the drivers roughly the same distance and spin is generally the the same, what is the point of custom fit. Serious question?
I have a G30 that I like but tested in a booth with the G400 and numbers were better. But on the course I cannot tell a big difference. What's the deal?
Mark, I'm not a launch monitor guy so forgive me if this is a bad question. Why are the total distances actually lower on your tests? Is there no roll out factored in, I would assume spin dynamics would have a bearing on the roll out?
These drives were all over the place! Some possibly bouncing off trees, being caught up in bushes etc. It is impossible to make any conclusions here other than your distances are going to be affected and variable if you can't consistently hit the fairway.
Mark crossfield. Daily vlog idea. Some insight as to how you and coach work together behind the scenes. Just a playing partner and occasional cameraman. Or business partner. Perhaps a daily vlog of coach.
Fitting is important for tayloring something for specifically you. You get clubs that suit your swing, after that. You learn, adapt and impriove through playing with those clubs. I reached 7 handicap at age of 17 with ebay clubs through just playing and wanting to get better on my own accord. Imagine if i had the money for club fittings and lessons. The power of practicing, wanting to improve and be better and figuring out my own mistakes took me that far. It can do it for others.
Not sure about the colourway. Looks a bit like the G10 which i didn't like. So many golf companies getting their colourway wrong. Sound like mark there.
I love the on course testing, but I didn't think I learned a lot about the clubs tbh. I prefer the ones at Dornoch where you hit more balls and try and to funk stuff. This felt more like a daily vlog than a review. Sorry!
really enjoy the depth of your reviews, and the fact your happy to comment on areas that others may not dare.
Crossfield has the most repeatable swing on RUclips. Because of that I love his testing.

Good old Dan and his baggy trousers 👍🏼
Mark, I like to see you compare the LS one with SLDR.
Great review, Mark! Very fair. I wish you'd had the GC Quad on the course, because it would have added an extra dimension to the test.
what an elegant loft sleeve that is
Excellent vid. I can't tell you how many times I've hit a club well on the launch monitor only to have it perform poorly on the course and vice versa as well. Sadly most shops here don't let you take demos out on the course ☹️

Since the G400 are made to look very similar from the top this could be a nice opportunity.
Still hitting my Ping G30 LS well , would like this new G400 LS , but its probably not any better overall . Love the reviews Mark , Thanks !!
Some You tube video test are showing about a 8 to 10 yards further distance with the G400 and definitely less P I N G sounding

The weight on the LST is further forward which will reduce spin but the standard club and the SFT both appear to have the weight about the same distance from the face which I would think would keep spin numbers similar.
I like the "turbolators" on the crown of Ping drivers. Don't really care if it improves aerodynamics or not, I just like the way they frame the ball.
Sounds way better than any Ping driver i remember. Quality.
Please discuss custom fitting.
For me that's the best looking driver out at the moment. I want all of my clubs in a mix of matte black, gloss black and copper.
Great review and very cool to see more of Dan. I hope to see Dan back for another round with the muppets soon.
No discussion on the stock shafts, Bro? As important as the club head design.
I have the Ping G and am very happy with it, but appreciate the review. I don't know if I missed it, but could you just do a video on how clubs are supposed to sit at address? Some of the shots from this review looked like the G400 were really toed up and I haven't had that with my G. Thanks!
I like the smaller head technology. I play a 10° Anser. I see they have shaft upgrades for $75. would love to see you hit a Kuro Kage, 262 😂
Now we know why Dan is in the vlogs. Mark wanted to find a shorter hitter than him.

of course not the g g30 and this thing all peform exactly the same
Let's do a test with the new ping g400 vs the callaway epic
just returned an Epic as I tested both, got a bit more distance and was persuaded to go with the epic, on the course was a different matter, too inconsistent with it, now got the G400 and will see how it goes
10:40... the most realistic golf shot on RUclips.
Interesting I was checking out drivers tonight at the local range the Ping G400 performed best for me!! Still not sure though may go for second opinion, as you say what can you tell from a dozen balls hit from a shed?
what were you using for the shot tracer? looks like it works well
I play a Ping LST 9.5 degrees with the hzzard low spin shaft, foe me it is the best
great review
Mark, Are all the shafts the same in the test? I'm not a shaftoid, I am just wondering.
Like the looks but is that what it is come too? I mean are we buying drivers and clubs for looks or are we buying them for great performance. That's why I love your vlogs, I want to find something other than my R11s but I don't think I'm going to find anything better. Am I wrong?
Would be great to see against the previous G LS Tech bruh!
It's £389 quid !!! The g before it retailed at £239. Crazy money
Have to ask the, if you hit all the drivers roughly the same distance and spin is generally the the same, what is the point of custom fit. Serious question?
Mark - does the shaft of the G400 driver look black at address vs gold when it's on the shelf?
+Alan Terry ummmm not really but defo not as bronze
I have a G30 that I like but tested in a booth with the G400 and numbers were better. But on the course I cannot tell a big difference. What's the deal?
You didn't mention what shafts were in the Drivers - Was this the Stock Stiff - or X Stiff or the Ping Tour 65 shaft stiff?
+Robert Melvin what shaft would you like it to be?
Mark, I'm not a launch monitor guy so forgive me if this is a bad question. Why are the total distances actually lower on your tests? Is there no roll out factored in, I would assume spin dynamics would have a bearing on the roll out?
+Darren K all carry on the numbers 👍
Now that's a shot tracer. Traced Dan's tree shot from branch to branch all the way to the ground.
These drives were all over the place! Some possibly bouncing off trees, being caught up in bushes etc. It is impossible to make any conclusions here other than your distances are going to be affected and variable if you can't consistently hit the fairway.
Is Lee Westwood still fuming over your monster Terry Wogan long putt?
They all sound similar... nice thudding thump
Mark crossfield. Daily vlog idea. Some insight as to how you and coach work together behind the scenes. Just a playing partner and occasional cameraman. Or business partner.
Perhaps a daily vlog of coach.
Ist it better than the G25 ??.
I love my G, so if it's better I'm getting 1!!!
Am I the only golfer to have the hosel crack in less than a year on the standard G400?
Hi Mark. I'm a bit confused. Normally you preach to go and get fitted but today you said fitting has serious issues.Still love the content bruh.
How do we get fit if dry numbers are not the way to go... I ask that seriously not as sarcastic as it would seem haha
where is the couch?? 😥🤔
I love the on course testing, but I didn't think I learned a lot about the clubs tbh. I prefer the ones at Dornoch where you hit more balls and try and to funk stuff. This felt more like a daily vlog than a review. Sorry!
262 lol.
Lower club head displacement does not mean lower MOI.
