"Aquarius" is the opening song and "Let The Sun Shine In" is the closing song of the musical "Hair".
A must see if you can find it somewhere.
I saw the musical "HAIR" back in 1969. It was a controversial musical because the performers took their clothes off at the end of the first act.
This is a medley of two songs from the Broadway musical “Hair” which came out in 1967 (made into a film in 1979.) During the finale (Let the Sunshine In) sometimes the audience was invited to come up on stage to sing and dance along with the cast.
A 69 year old hippie here, love to see & hear these old standards again & the responses from our younger generation. It was a great era of music & really takes me back.
Sweetheart you aren’t old enuf to be a hippie, not at 69!
Same! Same age and this brings me so much joy!
Same here, sang this in Jr.Hi chorus.
Marilyn McCoo had a wonderful voice and could easily be ranked among the best female vocalists of the late 60s/early 70s.
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis were in the league of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrel vocally.
Agreed .
5th Dimension's Up, Up and Away in My Beautiful Balloon is vocal gold.
I’m 63 years “young” and an ‘ol hippie, this is a mash up of two songs from the Broadway play “Hair”, during those days we needed all the beautiful positive messages delivered by great music.
The song is from "Hair"
They are actually two songs from Hair combined.
Save The Country*
One Less Bell To Answer
Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes
Stoned Soul Picnic*
Wedding Bell Blues*
Up, Up and Away

I live in central SC. In 1970, I saw the Broadway play "HAIR" , in NY City, which has these songs sung by the cast....fantastic! I also purchased this group's albums...also fantastic! At age 72, I am an aging hippie and artist. I love that you are reacting to this amazing group that has great longevity! Namaste! 🙏☮
Did they remain clothed?
age 74 here.....in the SC Upstate.....still have the original Broadway cast soundtrack on CD......
@@chrisjamieson3452 There was one part where the cast was nude, but there was a lot of colored lighting to soften the impact. It was like a dream sequence. This was the first time they had nudity included in a play.
@@roy19491 Awesome!
I was born and raised in South Carolina, graduated college in Charleston, but I live in a beautiful Western state now. I'm always heartened to hear of cultured people from my home state though!
Marlyn and Billy have been married since 1969 and still going strong
i believe the other two were married to each other too.
Marilyn and Billy were the only ones in the group married to one another
I'm a 71 year old from Indianapolis, IN. Love this group.
69 years old from Italy. Love this group too !.....always liked them.
The Age of Aquarius was supposed to usher in a time of peace and harmony. It's where the term "New Age" comes from.
It's appropriate that this recording be featured in your New York stream: The 5th Dimension were in New York performing when singer Billy Davis left his wallet in a taxi cab. The next passenger in the cab happened to be a producer of the musical "Hair", that was all the rage at the time. Davis invited the producer to come to a 5th Dimension performance as a reward for returning his wallet (not knowing who the guy was), and the producer ended up inviting The 5D to his show: "Hair". When the members of the 5D heard the "Aquarius" song they were convinced it needed to be recorded right away. Their producer, Bones Howe, came up with the idea of combining two songs from the musical to make it something more impactful. Howe always worked with members of the 'Wrecking Crew' studio musicians to record his album projects. The 5th Dimension were fortunate in that they were able to work with the same rhythm section on all their recordings up to 1975 - drummer Hal Blaine and bassist Joe Osborn. And their buddy, Larry Knechtel, often played keyboards on the albums, so it gave The 5th Dimension a consistent, cohesive sound on all the early albums that most vocal groups did not benefit from. The albums have more of a true 'group' sound, than the usual vocal group with anonymous backing musicians.
I recommend you listen to "The Girls' Song", "Black Patch" , "If I Could Reach You", "This Is Your Life", "On The Beach (In The Summertime)" and "Dimension 5ive" to hear the range of their capabilities.
Years ago, I saw the 5th Dimension 3 times in concert. They are fun and amazing!!! Thanks for your reaction. Congrats and Have a Smooth Move!!
The bass line in the second half is EVERYTHING!
How many waited for the flip to see her expression.
The songs are from the musical "Hair." At the time astrology was a major fad.
76 year old boomer here, Toronto, remember their music, fun times
In Air Force Tech School in Texas in 1969 and listened to this all summer. Like a lot of groups from the 60’s a female singer, Marilyn McCoo here, gave her signature voice to define the group. In the 80’s I saw her in Vegas when she performed with Lou Rawls. A powerful beautiful voice.
Texas, 53 years old. These are the songs that shaped my childhood.
This was from the musical play “Hair” which debuted in 1968 in New York City. It was about the 60s, the hippies and the peace movement. This play was remade over and over again in different cities, and I saw it at the Strand theater in my hometown. Brings back a lot of memories to hear this iconic song by the 5th Dimension. Best wishes on your future Maggie.❤
In the documentary Summer of Soul, director Questlove interviews Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr, members of the 5th Dimension. It’s an interesting segment of this film. If you haven’t seen Summer of Soul, seek it out. You won’t regret it!!
I am 69 years old and live in Birmingham Alabama. Long time fan of the 5th Dimension and still listen to their music today. One of the greatest singing groups of all time.
I was in love with Marilyn McCoo back in the day! Beautiful girl with a beautiful voice!
So were a lot of young men
55 year old from Illinois, but I loved everything hippie in my 20s and saw the 25th anniversary revival of Hair from the front row.
The joke goes, that a great singer could sing tbe phone book and make it sound good. The 5th Dimension literally sang the Declaration of independence and made it sound wonderful! Such music and harmonies. None better!!!!
Billy D and Marilyn...still married today! What a great uplifting song! Really, you talk about music that UNITES people...this is one of them! A most underrated group that easily is among the greatest vocalist group ever!
Back in my day they were one of my favorites. And I'm 80 years old.
All this music actually came from the play "Hair", rhat was later turned into a movie.
My dad took me to a small playhouse to see this when it first came out; I was 7 or 8 years old. Little did my dad know that it was a nude play! 😁😁😳!!!
Boy this brings back memories. Our high school choir performed this medley in the mid 70's. I got to play guitar on it. The music from this era was amazing.
The hair on the back of my neck stood up during Let the Sun Shine. Great song, great group.
1964 & I am from Down under Australia
This is a "medley" of tunes, all from the amazing '60s musical HAIR, which you really must experience, MR...
You'll be surprised at the number of tunes you know snippets of from you millennial lifetime!
HolyCheeseMuffets
I am 70. The Fifth Dimension was the first rock concert I ever went to. I think it was 1970. It was at Mac Court at the University of Oregon. Awesome.
Laura Nyro wrote many songs used by various artists. She also recorded them for herself.
5D recorded " Stoned Soul Picnic "
They also did Laura's "Wedding Bell Blues", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save The Country".
Big time Congratulations on your graduation from Julliard. Every time I hear this it reminds of the film "Hair" which was also a big Broadway hit. If you have not seen it, I highly suggest it.
Donna Summer can be found singing this in German fresh out of high-school as a musical performer. its on youtube
I'm 65 now but in 1969 (Toronto) I was riding the streetcar right past the hall were the production of Hair was and outside was a man with with a huge purple afro.
That's embedded into my mind. Thanks Maggie for pulling it out.
There music was ever present for a key part of my life. So happy to see you highlighting their music. They really captured a particular zeitgeist
"This sounds like Disney!" 😆
I love the musical, "Hair."
It doesn't end with as much hope as the songs might suggest.
If you haven't done so already, check the live performance in Summer of Soul.
I was born the year this came out. I've been listening ever since...
I'm a 76 yr. old disabled Viet. vet. I served "in country" from 1968 (The Tet Offensive) to 1969. Since "Aquarius - Let the Sun Shine In" came out in 1969, I probably heard it for the 1st time in Viet. Seems like an appropriate song for a war zone! We listened to everything from Simon & Garfunkel to Steppenwolf & Jimi Hendrix.
VERY cool music Sir!
That's awesome! I'm 50 yrs old and I love music from the late 60's and 70's (so much that I learned to play and sing some of it on guitar). That was the best era for rock/pop/folk music, imo. Also, so glad you made it out of that place alive!
Bass player workin' overtime...! Just WOW!
Joe Osborn from The Wrecking Crew. He is hammering it!
And he ad libbed it...producer told him to just play something....
So joyous and uplifting, as an old goat this also breaks my heart given how we as a species fall so short of our potential
This song is a combination of two songs from the musical, Hair.
Matt 30, from Spokane WA here, home of the 1974 world's fair
In 1970 I graduated from HS. We had performed a joint concert with our concert choir and girls choir with this song. Memories❤ 5
I'm 58. Originally from San Fran now in Eugene Oregon for 30 years. Mama used to play this song and dance to it all the time. You're about to watch the video so I'm going to go nostalgia for a few minutes lol
43yo vintage enthusiast from Jacksonville, FL.
I really enjoyed living in Jacksonville for a summer in 1999. Cool town, and I loved Jax Beach! Used to drive across the St. John's river everyday for work.
63 year old and I remember well when this song first came out. I live in Iowa.
The Age of Aquarius, in astrology, is either the current or forthcoming astrological age, depending on the method of calculation. Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the Earth's slow precessional rotation and lasts for 2,160 years, on average (one Great Year equals 25,920-year period of precession / 12 zodiac signs = 2,160 years)
Later Marylin Mcoo and Billy Davis Jr from this group had some hits on their own.
"A BIG HIGH 5 ON THAT ONE MAGGIE!!!"🖐🏻😁 My name is Joel Martin and I'm from a little town called Lebanon, Tennessee about 30 minutes east of Nashville and yes I've been told many people over the past 44 years or so that I'm a guitar 🎸 picker" so I'll proudly own that profile!🤭 Some of my earliest most enjoyable memories were of this group as I was just a toddler when this and "Up Up And Away" came out so yeah I'll be 60 a week before Christmas🎄🥳 Every time I hear these songs still to this day I can see my older sister Meredith who was probably in the first grade at the time and would proudly proclaim that she was an Aquarius♒ and that this was her favorite song as she was dancing and singing along to it!🤭 And I would happily join in!!😆😂🤣💖
44 from Boston, and I grew up listening to The 5th Dimension. They have some of the most beautiful harmonies.
I love these oldies but goodies from my youth.
Me too! VERY cool!
I was around 12 when I first heard their greatest hits on 8 track. Influential in my musical journey. They are way under appreciated in my opinion
I'm 58 and live in Tn i played this song with ray Charles when i was a teenager in los Angelses Cal when he visited the foundation for the junior blind, he was on the piano and i was playing drums
75, saw hem in 1969 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Now loving my Fort Worth, Texas
Shout out to the Wrecking Crew who played on this recording. Great bass by Joe Osborn.
The bass player on this song was a bad-ass.
Joe Osbourne
That’s the great Carol Kaye of the Wrecking Crew on bass. Great reaction.
Actually, it's Joe Osborn. For whatever reason, she never worked on 5th Dimension sessions.
Love this song- gives me chills !
I was about 5 when this song came out. Loved it then, love it now
Another aging hippie here, 61 years old. When I was 6 or 7, Up, Up And Away was my favorite song. I had a crush on Florence for a while in the 70s.
Aquarius - Let The Sun Shine In ...are 2 sing from the musical ..Hair. 70 and have been in Florida since 2016. I now the 5th Dimension and have loved their songs. also I am Aquarius so as a kid in school when it came out I took immediate notice. Marilyn McCoo had a solo career.. BTW... The Cowsills did the song ... Hair It is a video from a comedy special in the 60's and on RUclips
I'm 77 from virginia and this was a reference to the prophesied coming of the New Age of Aquarius - an age of peace, Loving & brotherhood where everyone looks out for each other and loves one another and there is peace among men across the planet. Right now we are in the beginning of that new age. That is why all this negativity is coming up to be cleared away and make way for this new age.
I remember Aquarius as a kid in south Texas. It is a meaningless mixture of hippy talk and astro-babble but that doesn't matter because it was beautifully done and a joy to listen to. The lyrics mean less now than they did then but the joyous music means even more.
marilyn mccoo is on my top 5 female singers in the pop music world !
Congratulations!!! Blessings to you and your future.
Hello 👋 gorgeous lady. I hope you are having a great day, and enjoy this song. Especially the harmonies 🎶😊👍
My mom had this LP, listened to it many times growing up. It was part of a small but very eclectic collection of vinyl. I'm 59, from southeast Wisconsin.
Fun Fact: this is the biggest hit medley of the Rock Era.
I am having major flashbacks to chores on Saturday morning - the Fifth Dimension was one of the 8 tracks (yes I said 8 tracks) that we played doing chores then. For reference, others were the Oklahoma soundtrack, Barbra Streisand's greatest hits, and Simon and Garfunkle's greatest hits.
58 originally from Syracuse, New York and the last 42 years in Houston, Texas.
Stoned Soul Picnic & One Less Bell to Answer would top the list of other songs. Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All was O.K. They were soul singers who ended up recording many pop songs. Not a bad thing, as that paid their bills well, and the songs were good, because they were so good.
Watching from from western Canada 🇨🇦 and 60+ years
Congratulations Maggie! I love your energy, but I miss your old intro! Also, I love "Carmen", we played it for our marching band show in high school my freshman year. I played trombone, LOW BRASS RULES!!
I'm working on 50 this year(very surprisingly, I know what I've done to myself thru the years). Currently in Kentucky but from western New york. I grew up on this stuff
Maggie you are so Charismatic. I love your stuff also your great beauty.
69 and I remember that my first exposure to the 5th Dimension...like a lot of other artists...was on the Ed Sullivan show.
I'm from Texas but I was growing up in Ohio when I would hear this song from the LP. I'm 59
Everyone in the comments is talking about how this song is from the musical "Hair" and all I can think of when I hear this song is the end of the movie 40 Year Old Virgin.
These songs are from a simpler time when optimism ruled the day and people thought the future was going to be enlightened and mankind was going to be better than we are.
I was 2 the year that this song was released. I'm 3 months shy of turning 57.
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. have been married now for over 50 years! Check out Wedding Bell Blues, One Less Bell to Answer, Surrey, and Up Up and Away. This group was amazing back in the day!
Lubbock, Tx. 77 yr. old. Yep, I was around BEFORE Rock and Roll. Thanks for the ride.
61 year old here. I had the 45 of this and wore it out!
You need to check out the Movie/Play "Hair" When people had hope and things were beautiful.
Maggie I love these guys. I have seen them in concert and have some of their autographs. Thanks for reacting to them. In Maine and I am 74.
It's also cool that "Aquarius" was the name of Apollo 13s LEM and the ship that got the astronauts home.
This was a HUGE hit! 🤙😎
I am a 72 year old living in Santa Barbara and heard this song from the play Hair in the 1970s. Maybe I'll see you here.
They are actually two songs from the musical "Hair" combined. It was one of these songs that kind of defined the Hippy movement and closed out the decade of the 1960's and all it's turmoil and change. if you did not live in the era you will never fully know...Congrats on your degree.
Natural talent will always trump classical training, there were no digital interventions on there voices just pure talent
I vividly remember this. I don't think peace guided the planets or love steered the stars in retrospect, but I was young and willing to believe at the time. We really need some of this naive acceptance & love these days.
Johnson City, Tennessee. 52 years old.
Hope your relocation is easy. Nothing broken, everything arrives early. Have a wonderful life. Good luck to you in your career. 🌹
If you haven't yet-from the same musical try the Cowsills' Hair-their performance video.
she's definitely gotta hear that!!
5th Dimension - Aquarius - Let The Sun Shine In... Marilyn McCoo who was part of the 5th Dimension also had a solo career with her husband who was also in the 5th dimension. .. Marilyn McCoo One Less Bell To Answer...
