That bass was the late, great Joe Osbourne, an esteemed LA session musician and member of The Wrecking Crew - the name given to the A list session musicians for nearly everything that came out of LA in the 1960s and early 70s. In fact, it was Joe Osborne who gave the Carpenters their first shot at recording. Also part of that crew and heard here was Hal Blaine on drums...It's those same guys that you've already heard on TONS of older songs you've heard or reacted to, but never knew it. Carpenters and Captain and Tennille, Mamas and Papas, Beach Boys, ALL those hits of the 60s and 70s that came out of LA had those guys playing on it which is why they're all SO good. There's an awesome documentary for rent on RUclips and I think Hulu too called The Wrecking Crew that shines the lights on these guys and gives many examples of the stuff they played on. Joe is featured in it, showing how he played that part and then they fade the track in. If you guys ever did movie reactions, that would be a good one, but even if not, still great to watch on your own to get an understanding of how those hits were made back then.

It was Joe Osborne who discovered the Carpenters and had them record in his home studio and introduced them to Herb Alpert, of the Tijuana Brass fame, trumpet player and co-owner of A and M records. Joe also played on Ricky Nelson records in the early 1960's He was in a session at a studio when a songwriter played a tape of Traveling Man to the studio producer. The guy didn't like it. the writer said keep the tape. The guy threw it in the trash. Joe Osborne was out in the hall and heard them playing the tape. He went in and asked it hear it again. The owner said "Hear it? You can have it, fished it out of the trash. Joe took it Ricky Nelson and the studio guys across town. They recorded it, it went to number one. don't mess with Joe he KNEW it was a #1 hit.

For the record, the spelling of Joe's name is Osborn. He played a very early Fender Jazz Bass with flatwound strings, using a pick, as was stated earlier. The bass manufacturer Lakland produced a Joe Osborn signature bass (now known as the 44-60) in Joe's honor late in his life.

Yes, in fact Aquarius and Let The Sunshine In are the first and last songs, respectively, of HAIR. To be a bit more precise, Let The Sunshine In isn't a song in and of itself, but it's the closing part of the song "The Flesh Failures", which is the final song of HAIR.
But great renditions of the songs by 5th Dimension here.

I was a 6th grade, 12 year-old Aquarius when this song became a huge radio hit, in '69. You can bet that I loved this song, 'cause it was about the dawning of "my" age, and of course, once I'd seen them perform on tv, I also fell a little bit in love with Marilyn McCoo. This song is from the Broadway hit, "Hair." Long hair was one of the many ways we tweens and teens rebeled in those day. I really wanted to see the musical, but my parent said no. That's because there was an infamous, all cast nude scene in it! Now that's ground-breaking freedom of expression!

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, Astrology and interest in horoscopes was of great interest to so many people across America. Books covering the subjects, coffee mugs, wall posters, etc. Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In, from the musical Hair was very popular with The 5th Dimension covering this song. When I was in band class back in Junior High, we played this as an instrumental. I played the Baritone Horn meaning I got to play the bass part of the piece. This song brings back sweet memories.

For "Let the Sun Shine In," the main singer, Billy Davis, couldn't quite get the feel of it until the producer told him to "go to church." Billy clicked right in after that. The song definitely has a gospel feel to it.
Funniest thing: that age of Aquarius nonsense wasn't determined by Jupiter aligning with Mars. That happens just about every year, and the moon in the seventh house happens EVERY SINGLE DAY, so that was definitely BS. Like all astrology is, but that's another story.

We did this in Junior high the next year for the spring choir concert. I was in band on trumpet, played piano, but played some guitar. We had 3 guitar players and a bass player and drummer in addition to a student piano player. The choir danced in the aisles! I demonstrated a facsimile of the correct bass part. The guy on bass had no clue what to do except play the root of the two chords on Let the sunshine. I borrowed his bass and showed him. the kids gathered around and said "shit man, you should play the bass part. I said no, [he's gonna learn it. In two days after I taught him at his house, he nailed it. I;ve never seen a kid so proud of himself. It wasn't exactly like the record but it was funky enough, nd he got all kinds of compliments from the teacher and students...they though he couldn't do it...I became a music teacher. Never EVER give up on a kid....especially your own. Music is not a damned sport...it's an art.

Add grew Up back in the 60 70s, I'm AOG some people are somebody's website. Or youtube with disrespectful about the music Back then and I was so upset because if this group speak in a single from their heart about let The sun shine They're singing about people hard or so. Cold hatred prejudice when they say, let the sun shine in. They sing about love and war another. This is a gossip R&B. Group to me the song I mean. Excuse me. If you're burning, listen to the lyrics, you will get a full understanding. Because every time I listen to It. My Holy Spirit does moves me. I can listen to the song 24hrs a day. That's how much it touches my heart and break tears to my eyes. Especially when the brother at the end. He has a preacher's voice He has a voice when you and church. And when the pastor is preaching, that's what this brother sounds like and every time he's singing The holy spirit be moving me that's how Power Full, this song is gobless you. I'm glad you guys really like it because i' I I know I do and thank you guys but be a respectfu Because somebody of a broadcast, they don't and it makes me upset. We go to talk about the clothing and the graphic. And everything else about how they made it in a very set to be off. Because that's a error I grew up on. I grew up. Thank you god god bless you

For the last season of the biker show Sons of Anarchy, musicians did a kind of rock version of this song. I remember my Mom had this album. She loves it even now😊

This track is great musically & historically. It was entirely the creation of Bones Howe. Aquarius was directly from the musical “Hair” but Bones saw that it alone wasn’t a “hit”. He went and saw ‘Hair’ and realized the song ‘Flesh Failures” could have a more obvious title and become part 2.
The Wrecking Crew, named by Loretta Lynn, included Blaine & Knectal & Osbourn, possibly Herb Alpert or his guys on brass, recorded this at Wally Heider’s. Bones gave Joe Osbourn the basic chart and told the musicians to do 24+ loops. Osbourn delivers a freaking Masterclass of Comping, playing 24 subtle but interesting variations of that chart. The tape was flown to Vegas where the 5D were performing. They listened to the tape ONCE, marked the changes and then put down the vocal tracks, one take. The entire outro vocal, over the Bass track, was entirely improvised by Billy, on the spot. Bones knew what he wanted and Joe, Hal, Larry, Marilyn & Billy delivered.

This score comes from the play Hair. My dad took me to see the live play when I was 8 years old. Little did he know that it was a nude play. 😁😁😁😳!

These songs 🎵 are from the Broadway Show HAIR... Which became a movie in 1979.
Hair was about a small group of Hippies that ripped up their Draft cards and hung/lived in Central Park that meet up with a recruit that came to NY a few days early awaiting his military "appointment". One of my top five movies.
You guys would get a kick outta the songs... just remember we weren't offended by as much as the newer generations.

You might want to watch the musical, Hair, which features this and many other songs, including the title song, Hair. Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair. Shining gleaming, streaming flaxen waxen. Just a tease of the awesome lyrics in that song.

THIS IS THE DAWNING OF THE AGE OF AQUARIUS-
~ Opening hook of the medley "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine" performed by the 5TH DIMENSION, merged two songs from the controversial, and in turn groundbreaking Broadway smash, "HAIR". Synchronicity and Serendipity joined forces when a wallet lost was returned to one of the groups members while performing in New York by Hair's producer, Michael Butler and mutual show invitations ensued.
Butler, son of the wealthy Co-founder of the Village of Oak Brook, Illinois, the Midwest's version of Beverly Hills, was thus birth-righted an "All Access Social Pass" to the American Royalty of the times, most notably including JFK, whom as a Senator he advised on Middle East and Indian matters. During a failed run for the Illinois Senate in 1967, he developed an anti-Vietnam War focus, and after seeing the original limited run production and being blown away, acquired the rights, reworked the show (adding the infamous nude scene) and from its re-opening in April 1968 ; It ran for 1,742 performances. The author was lucky enough to attend one of those in 1969.
So pleased you and OTHERS of Gen Z, Zillennials, et al are discovering this song! It means we are indeed at the dawning of the AQUARIAN AGE- and you folks- will be picking up the torch from BOOMERS to ZOOMERS. (the folks in between, not so much, all Semi- to Un-woke, big yikes for them).- HEY- we took care of Vietnam ending, women's rights, Civil rights, Gay/Lesbian rights, Trans (which I am-sort of battle continues), and brought you the internet. Not bad for one generation's work! Oh- and I-phones. Can't forget Steve.
"Aquarius/Sunshine won the 1969 Grammy for "Song of the Year".
IMPORTANT LESSON HERE IN HISTORICAL TERMS-WHERE REAL CHANGE BEGAN< 1969-5th Dimension's #1 Hit for 6 weeks in April and May 1969- Nailing IT! -the Zeitgeist of that moment. The ensuing weeks and months included Woodstock, "An Aquarian Exposition"; the Beatles "Get Back" an anti-prejudice ode bumped "Aquarius/Sunshine" to number 2; Charles Manson became the face of Evil; and the Stonewall Riots marked the violent birth of the LGBTQ+ movement.

Joe Osborn was killin it on the bass and the drummer almighty Hal Blaine kept everything in time. Bones Howe the producer told Billy Davis Jr. to “take it to church” on the second half of the recording. Spent 6 weeks at number 1 on the pop and R&B charts. Huh. Wonder why.

funny, I had the opposite reaction. I was 6 and I hated this song with a passion. I don't know why now that I hear it again. My brothers and sisters sang it to me just make me cry. That's what we did before video games. 😂
