That's the type of bass playing i do! you can hear me actually pulling off the AiC sound from this song in some of my game metal covers (most notable is Giga the Demonic, even though to me it sounds like i am raping a goddamn cow!)

The bass is soooo much fun to play with the deep bends.

Honestly, I just found out about these guys not too long ago, and going through their original stuff and their new music, I don't see anything drastically different; the style and the tone of music is the same, and it's still the fucking best thing ever. As long as music sounds good to me, I don't really care.

They are good. But its not like turning on the radio in the car back in the mid 90's and hearing Layne's voice from Man In The Box or any of their others songs of the time. I lived it. It was a special time. We were blessed. Its Layne's sound they are capturing. And its still not exact as much as they try. Decision is the closest they came in my opinion. Try making your own sound iconic and you will see how hard it is to become an iconic voice who pioneers a particular sound

Mike Starr and Layne Staley, you may be gone but you're sure as hell not forgotten. Your spirits live on through the music and real fans keep listening because it keeps speaking to us.

every damn Cantrell solo makes me miss Layne. This is the band that's always been the escape pod, the transcendence to another world, with reality the true hallucination. i'm glad these singles still maintain that power. Anyone who misses Layne can be sure that his spirit is laced in this song like tonal LSD. just...damn...

Layne was the heart, Jerry is the brain.
I didn't think Alice in Chains could ever come back from losing Layne but I'm so glad that I was proven wrong by 'Black Gives Way To Blue', which I'll be bold enough to say is their best album. 'Devil Put Dinosaurs Here' is a step down from the previous album, but 'Stone' is one of my top 3 AIC songs.

I don't think that BGWTB is as good as either Facelift or Dirt but it's about equal to Tripod. it's definitely better than Dinosaur but both are good. Voices is my favorite Alice in Chains song overall.

If Jerry would have died instead of Layne would the band have continued forward? Would they be as great as they are now or better? Jerry apparently wrote 95% of the songs. Not dissing Layne in any way since obviously he's the one who's gone. It seems like Jerry was the one who held the band together after Layne's passing. Not sure if Layne could have done the same if he was still here and Jerry wasn't. Just some of my thoughts...

It’s great he holds/held the band together, but I really wish they would open up and let the singer be the singer. He’s a force that I feel is buried by a mix that is Guitar-centric.
Jerry made this sound, but the frontman takes it to that special level.

As much as I love Layne, I give Jerry all the credit in the world for resurrecting Alice and making them relevant in today's music scene. Layne is dead and he's never coming back the only way to preserve his memory is to keep listening to the beautiful art that the remaining members of AIC create.
This song absolutely pummels, I'm beyond excited for this album. That opening bass riff is SO DAMN HEAVY!!!
    RIP Layne, RIP Mike Starr

When I think of AIC, Layne of course comes to mind which might be why I've had this CD for a while now, but really haven't listened to it much until recently. Really though, it's still AIC all around and the more that I listen to it, the more I'm starting to appreciate it just as much. They were great before and found a way to be great again.

Oh. Wow, no one told me. Well, this is still AIC, that's for sure. Layne stuck around long enough to make sure Jerry wouldn't fold, but now he's ready to move on, comforted in knowing that cold, dry stone is a sense of warmth they took refuge in. Thanks for following through, Mr. Cantrell. And again, sorry about the show in Iowa. We both know why things happened the way they did, but I still feel a little responsible. Either way, you fulfilled Layne's dying wish. Thank you.

I guess I'm just a jaded old fan... I like the newest singles for the most part from the last two albums, but to me, the albums as a whole don't hold a candle to Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies & Tripod.
Even more sad to me is that today Alice in Chains is by far the best of the old school early 90's gunge bands. They were anyways, but look how far all those bands have fallen. STP, Pearl Jam, Pumpkins, Soundgarden & Alice are all shells of what they used to be.
But maybe new fans disagree? I hope.

  • @verndewd

Point is its stands on its own and up to anything with layne on it. Cantrell was the leading guitar guy in the band, it was his penchant for minor voicings that gave layne the capacity to go further in that context, the songs written by layne by himself didn't sell as well and were lyrically weaker, maybe cause he was a million shades of stoned all the time?

Whoever say shit about William vs Layne it's because they never been in a AIC concert and they don't know it's all about the way the perform live, they are and they will still be the greatest band ever. And Duvall is a great artist that fits perfectly in this band. Now you haters can stop wanking and think you could be me.
