2:46 Hypersexualization and casual nudity have always been staples of the cyberpunk genre, but there are two things notable with it.
1 - Authors have always made the effort to give at least some justification behind the fanservice. For example in Ghost In the Shell, Major Kusanagi has a skin tight thermo-optical device that turns her quasi invisible, but would look silly if she kept very visible clothes over it. Another example in CP:Edgerunners is how netrunners go skinny dipping in ice water baths when they do a deep dive or advanced hacking. In this case, their whole body and cyber augmentations turn into a turbo overclocked computer and generates a lot of heat that would fry their brain if they didn't have strong cooling. While corpo-backed netrunners have access to advanced high-tech cooling suits, the average street scums like Lucy and Kiwi have to settle for more rudimentary ice baths.
2 - Characters often tend to be really casual and nonchalent over nudity, with very little shame or modesty. After all, if Kiwi requires an ice bath to do advanced hacking, there's nothing preventing her from putting on some underwears once she's out of the bath, right ? It would be easy to chuck this to the overabundance of sexualization in the setting making basic nudity pretty dull and unremarkable, but there's more to it that ties to one of the core themes of the genre : cybernetics and transhumanism.
Imagine you lose a leg in a tragic accident and get a prosthetic leg installed. While the latter functionally serves the same purpose on the same location of your body and roughly has the same shape as the former, you won't consider it part of your intimate body/self. Then get the other leg and a hand replaced in another tragic incident, then you get cancer (yeah you're very unlucky) and lose your hair in the subsequent chemotherapy, that you decide to replace with a wig, et caetera, et caetera ... All those things help keep a semblance of social normalcy and functionality for your body, but you won't bat an eye if one gets damaged and needs to be replaced. They are objects, they are not your self, and thus don't carry the same level of intimate attachment as your natural body, nor the same need to protect its intimacy from public view. Casual nudity in cyberpunk settings is just the same logic pushed to the full body.
Also, if you paid extras for the cosmetic options of having blue tiddies and a full body spider web tatoo, might as well flaunt them (same with Rebecca's womb tatoo and "DICK" thigh tatoo)

I still remember the ingame posters about trans and genitals, the alley solely dedicated to showing and advertising strippers/hookers, nudity commercials in-game TV,... A subtle but also "right in your face" way to tell you how corrupted and far gone the morality in Night City, where pornography, drugs, guns are treated casually like netflix, kool aid, toys.

    • @jimwatson1013

@@huyle-ob8rg I was replaying the game and knew ALLLLL about that, yet as I road up an elevator looked and two huge billboards was an adverting somthing with a naked woman in the middle of sex. The concept of "sex sells" is hyper exaggerated to that point in Cyberpunk, so yeah you are both right on the sexulisation

Yup, a large part of cyberpunk theming is viewing your body as a thing instead of as a part of you. Speaking of that stuff, I kinda fall into the same camp, I don't really see my body as me, but rather as just something that I'm in, which really makes me connect with the cyberpunk genre as a whole.

Look forward to the next vid. Episode 6 is a masterpiece & one of my favorite episodes of the series.

I wonder. The hallucinations where he's seeing weapons coming out of himself and others, I wonder if that's a reference to the song that played in the old old teaser for cyberpunk 2077. One of the lyrics are "underneath my skin there is a violence. It's got a gun in its hand."

One thing this show doesn't really explain well is that there's this entire alternative to going cyborg. Which is basically using futuristic super steroids, gene therapy, and going "all bio".
Dorio very likely is one of those, so that's why she wasn't as affected by the EMP. That side too has its own version of "cyberpsychosis" which is basically super roid rage.

Long time ago post but fun fact is that, until she takes on hands like her brothers, Becca was one of those. Her body is gene coded to make her unassuming and all the coloration is "natural" instead of being chromed out. Some minor chrome that's standard but otherwise

Maybe it's affected by having played the game, but I kinda like how obvious the foreshadowing is in the story. It's true to the experience the characters are having. Night City forces you to never get a happy ending, and that's the tragedy of it all. Everyone knows it, but they either ignore it, try to do something amazing with their life, or leave.

@@emoassvampirekid9780 Hard disagree, this is literally set in a future US, it would be like watching an anime set in japan with a russian dub and english subtitles when you don't speak russian, I'm sure the russian dub is great and all but it just doesn't fit culturally and doesn't convey the same emotion. In episode 1, that "you're breaking my heart" from Gloria Martinez, in her Spanish accent, just hit different and had me tearing up. I don't know Zach's heritage but Aguilar is definitely of Spanish origin, just like Martinez is in the show, and some of his lines destroy me, honestly fantastic casting.
