One of the most heartbreaking parts is that even as his mind was gone, he could still see and recognize David and Dorio because he cared about them so much
And even after clocking David and getting pissed getting some shit fed to him by David. Man knew he was gone and literally forgave and forgot for the crew. Maine was real to the end. An as honorable man as you can get in this shitty world down to entrusting David to yank his cybernetics at the split second to honor his promise.
Apparently in the TTRPG version of the game, one of the cures for cyberpsychosis is just regular therapy. Unfortunately one session costs twice as much as installing a grenade launcher in your arm.
You have to also mention that this only for mild cases of cyberpsychosis, most of the time it requires a full course of therapy, cyberware removal, replacing cyberlimbs and similar essential organs with vat-grown replacements and being admitted into a psychiatric institution during the whole process. Cyberpunk being Cyberpunk, MaxTac putting a bullet in your brain truly is the most cost-effective way of dealing with cyberpsychosis.
Pretty much. An implant in the game generates a somewhat randomized number of Humanity loss, your starting Humanity being 10 times you Empathy. You roll dice depending on what implant it is and subtract from your Humanity, once it hits zero that's cyberpsychosis. Therapy can gain you back some Humanity. Also, Scandinavian cyber clinics minimize Humanity loss because of their quality and patient care.
16:53 I will say this again, I just LOVE this scene because after Maine says "No more runnin' for me, dawg. Reaper's finally callin' my name," in the distance, you see just a pitch black glitch. It's something not the human eye can see, but something that artificial optics can pinpoint just from glitching while looking in its general direction, hinting that Death itself, is just standing, watching, lurking, patiently waiting for Maine to bite the dust. Just far enough, but VERY closeby. It's so eerie, I just LOVE IT.
I dont know if it was just me but I saw him freezing when Tanaka started talking to him more as him at first being shocked that a corpo especially one as high up as him knowing who David is and then being reminded of his mothers dream once he was told how valuable he would have been to Arasaka
That, plus he's the father of the guy who bullied him in the Academy too. All sorts of stuff was definitely going through his mind, can't really blame him for slowing down there.
Also I think it plays into David's "I'm special" mentality a little bit as well. "This important corpo dude has his eye on me? I really must be important then."
The fact that Maine had this problem long before meeting David already shows his mentality was beyond Super Human, he endured it and the fact it showed him running meant it was a long journey. Him slapping David was suppose their ruffle hair moment and when he went for a light slap really made me tear up. He was one of the best characters and this big bro when leaving he was like if I am gonna go , it’s gonna be by my way . H And when David had Maines arm in his hand made me sad even more, especially when i remembered he was promised by Maine of when David grows up, Maine will give David his arms as a gift. Maine and Dorio were good people in Night people, and some of the coolest people as well.
In the TTRPG Empathy holds back Cyberpsychosis and David has such a strong level of empathy so that is holding back and tragically as you get more active in night city, fighting and doing terrible stuff to live. The churn of Night City wears down peoples empathy eventually means unless you get out of Night City it is going to happen. It also very clever how it shows Maine losing it and instantly cuts to David sitting by the window foreshadowing his fate.

It’s very quick, it’s 3 really fast paced scenes starting from 18:32 You can catch a glimpse of David sprinting away from Maine on the desert On the second scene there’s a back shot of David doing the same pose he does when he’s on the Moon staring at the sun on the Braindance with Lucy, but the scenario is of him looking at a blue sky with GRASS showing under him (he’s no longer in the desert anymore) Last scene is non-chromed Maine most likely staring at David achieving getting out of the desert he was trapped in and kept trying to run out. Makes me think his last thoughts probably were of relief seeing David out of the desert, (or outside of the cyberpsycho pespective, he disappeared in front of him a split second after he blew up Dorio’s pyre, so he caught that David got out of the blast in time) David kept running.

He asks what David wants, and it hits him square in the face just how deep he has already gone just to survive, but now he stands at a precipice where he may lose everything again. His new family is falling apart before his eyes. Fun fact, Maine never went cyberpsycho, if you rewatch clip, last thing Dorio ever did was give him jab of immunosuppressant in his shoulder. This was just full on regular grief crazy Maine I guess. Also that’s why he never attacked David and was calm in the end.
He did at the end hence the hallucinations, yet the injection woke him up to see Dorio die and then we went ballistic, maybe not 100% psyco but....grief as you. Dorio and David kept him a little bit awake after the fire fight the grief in preparing Dorio's send off and the friendly face of David could be seen even through the cyberpsycosis. The most heart wrenching part of all this is that cyberpsychosis can be treated with therapy. Yup. See a doctor, take some drugs, talk to people, work on yourself, and you'll be fine. But no, this world just shoves people down the meat grinder.
One thing that dawned on me is David & Mains arm. After the explosion, Did David run back in there. Or did he try to grab Mains hand and take him with em & just came back with his arm…
oh shit... you might be right. David 100% took Maine's arm AS he was hit with the explosion, David was inside that explosion 100% just was fast enough to escape. Your point of "Did he try to grab main hand and take him with him? and only came back with his arm" might be right. The explosion is too fast even for him, not everything can be solved and yet he tried....what did Lucy say! "You are the kind of guy to jump right in and try to save everyone in the middle of a fire even if you know you will get burned." David was right in that fire.....he tried to save Maine and was burned as he was covered in soot and smoke from the explosion..... now I think its not a maybe, you are right totally.
You can revert cyberspychosis but it takes a long time, you have to get basic medical grade implants and you have to go through therapy in Europe. It’s extremely expensive that’s why a lot of people can’t revert it and how long it takes. However once you go over the edge it’s too late.
david freezing up in shocking or traumatizing situations is just as understandable and natural as someones personality changing from a mental disorder, dunno where the take came from that david is to blame while maine isn't, when maines problem stems from his own decision to recklessly add cybernatic parts to himself in a city full of people going crazy from them. i know i am late but that was kinda an L take imo
One of the most heartbreaking parts is that even as his mind was gone, he could still see and recognize David and Dorio because he cared about them so much

It wasn't always that way, in old old cyberpunk 2020 (made in 1990) it kind of was just, more tech = less human, but as that has come to be understood as a pretty ableist way of looking at mechanical body parts, I think this shift to being more of an allegory for drugs and violent media are often scape goated in our modern world. But its easier to criminalize drug users than provide them aid and stability, just like its easier to send maxtac to kill the "cyberpsycho" than provide them aid and stability.

Me: Oh, you sweet summer child. You are so not ready 🥲
Never mind, forgot the date. You "were" so not ready🥲
You can revert cyberspychosis but it takes a long time, you have to get basic medical grade implants and you have to go through therapy in Europe. It’s extremely expensive that’s why a lot of people can’t revert it and how long it takes. However once you go over the edge it’s too late.
I had a Dorio.. She died of cancer. Now I just wait to die to see her.
"Saddest episode" oh not even close, wait until the ep 10

"The Saddest Episode"
Oh...boy....
david freezing up in shocking or traumatizing situations is just as understandable and natural as someones personality changing from a mental disorder, dunno where the take came from that david is to blame while maine isn't, when maines problem stems from his own decision to recklessly add cybernatic parts to himself in a city full of people going crazy from them.
i know i am late but that was kinda an L take imo
Damn…
you mean the saddest episode... so far....
