Sony saw all the new handhelds on the market and really did the bare minimum. 🔥
fr 💀
The bare minimum is still a standalone handheld, this is just a ps5 controller with a screen
I actually don't think they made this with Nintendo/standalone handsets in mind. I actually think they made this wanting to compete with Xbox Games Pass. The remote play anywhere aspect better goes against Xbox Games Pass ability to play on any Windows/Xbox device (including PCs/laptops). This device basically enables the same ability for PlayStation players. Especially this paired with the Games Catalogue (big library of hundreds of PS4 nad PS5 games you can add to your library at will long as you have a PlayStation+ subscription). I don't think they give a single care about the actual dedicated handheld market or they would have jumped back into it properly with a new standalone portable device years ago. I do think though depending on how well this device does, it might be the catalyst for them to do a proper standalone handheld in the future.
If the vita actually sold well then they would more than likely make an actual portable console. As it flopped pretty hard they don't want to spend all that development cost on another thing likely to flop, and with the handheld market even more saturated than when the vita came out with switch already being huge and steam deck along with all the other handheld PCs it makes even less sense
its only 199 and itll be on sale during black friday for 100 bucks probably
I wish they would do a new vita, I would buy it in a heartbeat because I don't always be at home when I take the notion to play.
Me too
The remote play device is missing one thing if it had back button on the controller I would’ve considered it mostly because I only play call of duty with a dual sense edge soo…. It’s a no for me
I'm buying this just because really
Same
Agree, Sony built a standout handheld with the vita, just misjudged the impact memory cards cost, and longer term developer support, own three myself, one a vita tv, and didn't do to bad a job with the psp it definitely was a hardware success.
Really excited for more coverage regarding the PS Portal. This intrigues me. I like the way you go in-depth with it too.
This blows my mind bro you have taken off I haven’t been the most reliable subscriber there is but I have watched you grow as a creator to this new level that blows my mind and shows you can litterly do anything you put your mind to

Really, what's to cover? The Portal barely does anything. It is a one-trick pony.
i mean mkbhd covered everything important about this in a RUclips short. What else do you need to know? 199 for a screen and controller. Basically this video is just sponsored content trying to sell you this overpriced excuse for a handheld.

Kinda surprising the remote device was the same price as the ear buds. Imo a little drop in the price of the ear buds would make them more accessible/affordable to more people, get them into more hands. Affordability will go a long way in motivating not just gamers to buy but also those who don’t game and are looking for a quality ear bud to pair with their phones and/or other electronics/devices. That’s a HUGE market with just a very small part of it being gaming related.
if you don't game you wouldn't even look at ps earplugs.
Pricing was meant to be a direct F You to the Nintendo Switch.
the earbuds probably dont even sound as good as airpods or galaxy buds honestly makes no sense why they wont allow bluetooth

Now the portal controller screen thing seems cool I can walk around the living room and game and help the kids and my girl without being locked to the bed or the couch I can just rock out but not for no damn 200$ my iPhone remote play works good enough ! @@skoolboi_L she'll be okay lol
Great production and presentation quality. Bravo.
I cannot fathom paying 200 for a device like this, but if there's a market for it go wild I suppose. What I'm curious about and wasn't discussed was if this thing can act as a normal controller for a PS5, with the screen active or not. There isn't nearly as much couch co-op anymore but it would imo be a necessary feature.
I'll be honest, I'm in the market for something like this. Because I can't always sit at my desk and play for too long, and I also like to play from bed or in a separate room. $200 is better than I thought it was going to be, but still a bit much for what it specifically is. The backbone is $99, but is only for the iphone, which isn't the biggest of deals. I wouldn't mind paying $150 for this whcih is $50 more than a backbone. Still not cheap by any means, but I think it would be the sweet spot for me personally. I think there will be plenty of people in situations similar to myself who is always on the move who will take a serious look at this. The $200 price tag will probably keep a lot of those people away, but fortunately black friday will be here in a few months.
for $200 its a steal for people who need it like myself
People pay 200 for a pro controller.
@@a8uella No one "NEEDS" this device lol
I can understand the market for this. I myself find this to be a very useful device in my scenarios but just like you said, the price being $200 is what is making me doubt whether I would actually buy it or not. If anything, I was actually more interested in the wireless earbuds with 3d audio since I hate over the ear headphones but seeing how those are marketed at $200 also, then I guess the PlayStation Portal isn't that bad when you take into perspective it being a decent remote play device. Actually, the more I think about it, the current backbone controller is $100, don't have all the dualsense features and is small and cramped which still requires your own phone to use as a screen....so yeah maybe $200 is "fairer" than what I give it credit for? IDK we will see if it makes sense once more people have it out in the wild.
Jud, you’re such a down-to-earth and wholesome guy. Keep up the great content.
Seems like PS portal is in its own market. Streaming handhelds. Affordable since it’s not demanding. Small price to pay. It’s actually impressive
it's really not in its own market. The logitech cloud was already a thing , The nvidia shield was a huge boon for Geforce now. Parsec ps4 remote play and steam remote play have been on phones and tablets for years. If you're talking about devices that only offer streaming then sure?! I
@@birdman4birdlegs yeah precisely, streaming only, and you are correct about the PS share tech being around for years, but it never had a really good use. It already is goodish mediocre, not phenomenal but usable. This device is the first device solely dedicated to exploiting PS remote play. PC, phones, tabs all have some form of stutter or priority issue with streaming with background processing. The portal has no background processing, 100% focused on steaming to your console to provide the cleanest and most stable experience for PS players to date. Yes it’s not a innovation by any means, they just finally found 1 way to put old technology to use and the streaming world is starting to show the desire for such products in the future to come. Streaming will never overtake conventional gaming but it is a potential route to explore and I think Sony isn’t wrong for tapping into an old well in my opinion.
Even though this isn’t a new Vita, It is really good to hear that you can use this device while connected to a different Wi-Fi connection! I was hoping so, and that saves this device!
Great video man, you really went deep into clarifying some basic functionality questions that nobody else seems to be explaining in their early reviews.. well done! cheers!

Thanks so much, was browsing through few of other outlet hands on and most of them didn't even show the buttons, layout etc of devices. Really appreciate getting to see all the ports, buttons on devices and everything. Your explanation of the PS Link is also very thorough and good job on the motion graphic, really makes it easier to understand everything. Great job!
I’m actually really excited about this. I know it’s not a handheld device that can put its own games in, like the switch. But in my household, it’s very hard for me to have time to play my PS five because my husband is always watching sports or something else. And it would be nice just to have a compact way of playing it while I’m sitting on the couch while other things are going on around me. So I think this will be a really cool Addition to my electronic collection. I’m not sure why this device gets so much hate. But I for one am super excited about it, thank you so much for doing this video.
Get a second TV lil ni**a
I really love the concept the only problem is you can do the same exact thing with your cell phone or tablet with a controller. Not to mention if you have good service on your device you don't even need Wi-Fi meaning you can take it to a park or take it wherever and play. This device can only be used where there's Wi-Fi.
but its not integrated so playing with a bluetooth controller adds input delay making those semi competitive games just no possible unless youre on the dedicated console. im kind of excited to see, if theres no delay (my internet is decent) then this is more than enough for me to purchase as this fits 90% of my use cases.
@@stephenwong8053bingo,
That looks so easy to break. The warranty would be crucial on it.

being able to connect the headset to multiple adapters is the main thing im excited about honestly, ive been using the old Pulse 3D on my ps4,ps5, and pc and it is kinda annoying to unplug the adapter and take it across the house to plug it into something else
You can’t use your old pulse 3D with these. You’d need to buy the new elite headphones with the new technology.
It’s going to suck being forced to use Sony’s mediocre gaming headsets. I’m super picky about sound and I would like to use my own headphones or ear buds. Hope there’s a workaround
@drinksprite if you mean for the portal there's no Bluetooth on it so their own headphones are the only wireless option, there is a 3.5 mm jack though I think

It’s dope. I already preordered mine.
Awesome review, Some places didn't mention that the portal has a headphone jack so good to see that. Wish it had Bluetooth though for other earbuds.
$200 for screen, controller, and screencast handheld is a fair price. If they offered to play PS1, PSP and PS Vita games offline I would've paid up to 300.
You're joking right? 💀
Dude no it’s not lol. A switch lite is the same price, a series s and a steam deck are 100$ more. This is a terrible price. I don’t understand what you guys are comparing this to saying it’s a good price because it’s not
There is only one big question and thats how bad the latency is.
Assuming it’s no different than the mobile app. It varies obviously on connection. But on 5ghz wifi it’s not noticeable unless you’re playing a rhythm game or similar.
I played most of Sekiro on remote play but had to switch to PS5 to fight specific story bosses that needed right reaction times even a little bit of input lag was getting me killed.
@@Otacon1105 Similar to my experience. It's ok for some casual play, but if precision is required it's a kind of a no go. No matter how good the connection will be, you just can't beat the physics.
Imho, the best way to use streaming is as a companion feature. You play the big story missions on your big tv and grind out side quests or play simpler games while streaming from your couch or bed or whatever.
I think Sony understands this, and in this context this device makes sense. It probably won’t sell that much, but since it’s not a separate platform, it doesn’t have to.
It's always noticeable, even in the best wireless connection.
Thanks for a very professional and informative review. I have now preordered the Portal so you should ask Sony for commission!!
Honestly I'm pretty excited for it. I get that it's basic, but to be able to hop into a game while watching tv with my gf seems pretty nice. I'm worried about the sticks and if they will suffer from the drift that my PS5 controllers have had. Hopefully it's using a different technology
I want to see real world tests where people compare latency of remote play on a phone vs this. If it improves there, it will be worth it

Probably exact same . I don't believe the it's more optimized thing for one min
Your ipad or phone has a better screen.
I would hope it’s better. You gotta figure that this is optimized for that. It’s like a console vs a PC: this isn’t running anything else in the background, no notification popups or phone calls interrupting the game. I’m hoping the dedicated connection means better latency and less variability in connection quality and stream fidelity.

Definitely wanna see a comparison of the mobile phone remote play vs the ps portal for the next video.
They won't because a mid-range phone has less lag. Let's see if they dare to show the lag in front of the TV frame by frame. From what I've seen in the videos it has a terrible lag. On top of that, he lies to our faces saying that he "doesn't notice lag".
Thank you so much for the review and pricing. Will be pickup 2/3.
Very hyped
Really good and informative video. Now i understand more what it is. I was pleasantly surprised by the price which i thought was going to be higher. I am in Sweden so maybe it will be slightly more expensive when it comes out?
It's intriguing. If the price was lower it would be an easier sell, obviously.
If it could pair as a second controller that might make it a little more bearable (unless it was mentioned it can be!). Might be a smart move from Sony tbh!
It's $200 my god You're cheap
@@VaunShiz200 for a console that doesn't function on its own is a lot, especially when you can get other handhelds that do for that price. Its not being cheap, its being responsible with money
@@VaunShiz $150 would be a more realistic price though, it's just a dualsense controller with a screen slapped on it, and that screen does the same things you can already do with your phone or laptop.
It costs just as much as a nintendo switch lite which is a handheld console that can run games on its own without the need of another $500 console.
@@VaunShiz so people say a 200$ burger for example is expensive, but a 200$ car is cheap. very good logic you got there mr matt
@@VaunShiz as many other people have pointed out in other comments, there are significantly cheaper alternatives to use remote play. 200 isn't a significant amount, but if it just does that one thing then I'm skeptical.
But I love your enthusiasm about something you know about 6 minutes worth of information about. You must be good with money and with decisions!
I normally play remote play via my Steamdeck and the experience has been mixed. I improved my experience by plugging in an ethernet cable via the USB-C, I am hoping we can still do this with the Playstation portal. In comparison to the steamdeck, this will have a bigger screen, higher resolution, and be significantly lighter. Playing from bed is currently my go to since I am a new dad and need to constantly pause and help out. Wouldn’t trade this for my monitor but it is a useful accessory for those that need to play in bed. Also, with the steamdeck i can’t connect from anywhere, I need to be on the same network, meaning that I loose my PS5 when I travel.
I'm excited to buy one tbh! I been loving my ps5 since day one!
Was worried about the headset but $150 is definitely great. I’ve been using the PlayStation brand headset since the Gold headset on the ps4. It’s simple and easy and looks good
@@bossmodl3thalpoppa484 its not 199 buddy
@@theoscreativetutorials is $199. learn to listen!!
@@bossmodl3thalpoppa484dude that was for the PlayStation Portal, not the headset. The headset is $150
@@bossmodl3thalpoppa484 hes talking about the handheld dumbass the commenter said headset lmao 😭😭
@@bossmodl3thalpoppa484that's also the price of the earbuds. Such a shame that you were so cocky only to be so wrong.
I'll get the "Portal" once someone has hacked it already and allow us to install third party apps, for instance, retro gaming, I'm curious how powerful is the chip inside and how several emulation platforms can perform, maybe up to PS2? Gamecube?. I'd love to see Moonlight, SteamLink, Xbox's remote play, Nvidia Geforce Now, etc... Let's give it some time to get taken apart by the community and unlock its full potential, then, I'll make a decision.
you will 100% need to buy additional stuff to do that (for example, external SSD)
i'm pretty sure 199 is not going to contain anything for you to hack.
Exactly, imagine downloading COD Mobile on it
I don't think you were paying attention to what this is 🤣 The things you want probably never gonna happen 🤣
@@diobrando6270 it has a USBC port, I'm pretty sure you can plug something there other than just charging. I guess people will manage to get some exploit through there and boot from there, for instance, a USBC dongle with some SD card in there. Doesn't need to be an SSD.
@@purplepineapple7893 why? It needs some kind of chip to render the interface, decode the video, manage the wifi, etc... The cheapest could be something on the level of a raspberry Pi. The board inside already has connection to USBC, it's a matter of time for people to make it boot from whatever code they have in the USBC rather than the internal memory, which I'm sure can be overwritten (I mean, they are not releasing this without the option for updates) someone will find a way to wipe it and install something in there, that being either android or Linux, depending on the chip, and once that's done the possibilities are endless.
Would be cool if they made a few dedicated games. Not on the scale of a psp, but enough to make it work if you’re on the go and don’t have decent internet. Would make more people interested I think.
Love your channel bro. May I ask which mic you use?
This was an unexpected surprise to see this vid this morning. The price is in the range I was hoping for. Will definitely be useful in my family setting and how I game. Tho I will definitely have to keep this out of my 5 years old hands lol. The way the screen is designed I can image alot of drop damage this holiday.
Below £150 would have been a good pricing strategy for this. Anything over £200 would have been silly for a pure remote play accessory, so I'm not that surprised.
I can feel how good the joysticks feel from just watching the video.
I imagine if this reaches whatever their success threshold is, that they will eventually drop a full handheld console version (vita) in the future. Can always update functionality later to work as a second screen and other features we would like to see.
I just want shell and screen and throw some Snapdragon 8 gen 2 hardware into it to make a badass emulator 😅
not going to lie, i wouldn't hold my breath, sony is not very forwards thinking, they used to be great cutting edge tech for gaming, but now they just are not even trying. plus with the way they killed the vita, i have zero faith in their ability to get anything out.
@@demonpride1975 I don’t disagree. However, the only chance I see if a true portable is if this sells well enough, and also the community wanting more, for them to ever make something like that.
@@CedricQuartey i don't see this selling as well as sony hopes. it's a very limited audience, as you have to own a ps5 for it to function to begin with. and most people will just use their tv anyways. the only people i see actually buying this are the die hards. and i think after the initial use, it will just sit around.
Vita was able to stream games from the main console, one of the reasons why I bought it, but the problem with it was that the reduced controls did not match well, having the back touch area as trigger replacement did not work out due to the shoddy way it could recognize finger contact!
as someone that utilized the heck out of remote play on my Vita, this is right up my alley. Especially with me traveling now and now that im paying for gigabit speeds at home.
Same
It will look terrible when not on the same internet connection and the inputlag will be horrible don't waste your money on this
@@dwaynethemineraljohnson412I’ve been using Remote Play for years, worry about yourself.
This is actually nice
I just pre-ordered my Playstation Portal
I'm very interested in the Portal. I want to see a head to head comparison between this and the backbone
The thing with the backbone and other devices like it. Streaming to your phone you’ll have annoying black bars that take up space on the already small phone screen. You’re getting maybe 4-5” of screen space on an iPhone pro max. The PSPortal will get 8” of screen space and a controller that’s basically a Dual Sense
@@GK15000It is the portability of a phone that makes it good. Not the actual feature set, hardware, sustained performance etc.
I thought Playstation Portal aka Project Q can use simultaneously with PS5 but it's not. If you are gaming on PS5, you can't gaming on Portal & vise versa. If you play remote play outside the house, it's will be lagging because it's using internet (need more video on this). Lame $200 accessory 🥴
@@Hazemanni dont know why you ever thought that. They were quite clear it would stream your ps5 to the device. Useless for you maybe very useful for me and millions other. A product doesn’t have to be mass market to exist.
@@sly2792004 Sounds like you're coping
The new over ear headphones I was expecting a higher price tbh and definitely not cheaper than the in ear ones. I wanted to know though, if the ear supports are more comfortable than the Pulse 3D which are like cement and really uncomfortable over my glasses. I will probably go with the in ear ones for this reason.
I am interested on the remote play device but only if it has better latency than the phones etc as my wifi isn't fast enough for those
I’m def getting this
It’s good to have tbh. Between football and basketball being on i need it. Also, it will be beneficial especially giving that the games need to be downloaded in order to play on WiFi so i would assume that since its downloaded it will run better than just playing it through the cloud.
This reminds me of those futuristic concepts back in 2012-13
That is the best comparison i have heard yet
I know they made the earbuds more expensive because they know that's what everybody wants. Will probably pick them up at some point. They look dope
I'm getting both. I've been thinking about the pulse 3d or the earbuds. I'm really feeling the earbuds 🥰 and this remote play device to compare it with my ps vita to see if it's a feel for me. I'll probably give it to my little brother lol
I see me getting in trouble at work lol 😂😂😂
