As a grown ass 43 year old man myself, I've looked forward to this. Something I can use in bed or in the living room or even on a trip since I have Gigabit Internet and a wired connection to my PS5. The kids won't get it, but us with busy lives and families certainly do.
I'd suggest a steam deck with chiaki. Then you can take it on the go as well.

as a dad of a 2 year old, I can totally relate. Rather than being glued to a PC monitor or a TV, by yourself, you can cuddle up with your loved ones and still be able to game here and there.

If you’re interested in PlayStation on the go I’d go with a portable monitor
I bought an OLED 13” portable monitor. It’s powered by the PlayStation. I used the controller that came with it. Much better and bigger screen and cheaper. You’re going to have to have the PS5 plugged in either way so I don’t think it’s less convenient

Apparently it’s being said that you could use it if you’re connected to outside WiFi such as being at a hotel or a friend’s house.

I'm a dad and this make no sense, buy another monitor instead you still have to have the ps turned on and connected to the same WiFi, your buying a screen with built in stick drift and Sony are laughing at you

The convenience and portability of having everything I need built into a single handheld is what makes this worth it for me and many others.
I’m playing the exact game that is on my PS5 meaning that I’m not buying another version on a different platform and paying that extra money and dedicating even more time to progressing throughout the same title on two different platforms, like having a PS5 and a steam deck.

@@IMdiogi11 yeah you can get a 20inch monitor it takes up no room and yes you can literally unplug it from the wall and move room with it, and still no reply about the stick drift which will kick in at some point and ruin the entire thing, I dont see the point in this especially when remote play on a tablet is a thing, and once again its a screen that will eventually get stick drift can't stress that enough

I don’t have kids but I preordered this and can not wait because I have an extensive library yet I work 50 hour weeks and when I’m off I still don’t have time 🤦🏾♂️this is perfect for me. It’s on the go it’s what I’ve been waiting on 🙌🏾

Correction on the bluetooth connectivity you were able to use any bluetooth headset on the PS3 but once the 4 came out they took that ability away
But you could only use Bluetooth on ps3 for voice chat, not game audio
Cause Sony exactly knows everyone will go for a cheaper and better third party bluetooth headset.
@@manuelkimpel3788 It is probably not that. The standard bluetooth audio is really not suitable for gaming because of the latency. There is a reason why wireless headset marketed for gaming comes with its own dongle instead of simply using bluetooth and it isn't because they don't want to use bluetooth. There are ways to connect with bluetooth that allows you to have low latency audio like using aptX-LL, but not every bluetooth device support it, and even if a device support it there can be inconsistency in the implementation. According to RTINGS, the latency using the default bluetooth audio codec (SBC) is between 150 to 250ms, aptX 50 to 150ms, aptX-LL 50 to 100ms.
My main concern about this is stick drift the should at least made the sticks like the pro controller

stick drift isn't a real thing, these controllers have been tested by professionals for thousands of hours. only a niche group on the internet keeps championing haal effect sticks and complaining about a non existent stick drift issue... NOBODY CARES
Stick drift is practically non existent. I have 3 DualSense controllers that are 2 years old and no drift.

For the people complaining about the price, what would a good price be for this product? Isn’t the Backbone $99? - and that doesn’t even include a display. The Portal has a dedicated 8 inch display and a DualSense controller. Is that not worth $99 over the price of a backbone? I personally think it is.
Absolutely right. The complaining demographic is largely comprised of kids with no disposable income and idiots.
The thing about the backbone is that it’s meant for your phone, something pretty much all of us have. and it’s meant for enhanced mobile gaming
I agree. I have multiple handhelds and I’m excited for this. I have some PlayStation exclusives that I would like to play while not in front of my television or while lounging around with my family. I still love my Steam Deck and Switch but I don’t mind having another dedicated device for my PS5.
How about 0$ price for the controller that came with the ps5 and phone that I use everyday.
@@IwinMahWay I would rather have a dedicated device instead of using my phone. I'm usually multitasking with it and would rather reserve my phone for other purposes. I can understand if someone else doesn't want that but I like having things with specific functions.
Looking forward to the official earbuds UK release. Would need to watch more post-launch hands-on content of the portal to convince If I want to invest in it or no.
Overall, its good seeing Sony investing more in their playstation accessories

@@VRRJAY You're not getting a simpler experience You're getting a more limited complicated experience where you have to buy their own dedicated headphones because it doesn't allow you to use your own for the exact same price you could get an entire steam deck when you have to put in the price of the overly expensive headphones assuming you want to play the game with sound and a thing with a phone is you already own a phone so it's not any extra cost you don't have to go out and buy an entirely other device now you just need two devices instead of one
@@The_MEMEphis to be honest id rather have a dedicated device for it. Battery on my phone runs out quick enough already. Ive used remote play while bluetooth the dualsense controller and the input lag/latency is less than ideal. 🤞 with this being propriatory hardware and no bluetooth required that input lag isnt an issue.
Also it has a 3.5 aux jack so headphones not a huge issue unless you absolutely need it to be wireless
This is definitely a unit for the mom and dads of the world who have a spouse or kids using the TV 😂. I’ll probably pick one up. Haven’t been able to touch my ps5 in literal months.

That's my BIGGEST concern. If it can play VERY well outside of the house at any distance from the linked PS5...I'll buy a ps5 and this and sell my backbone.

@@MindOfSheesh it has to be in rest mode at least ... then u can wake up your PS5 from anywhere ..and at the end of your session u can put it back to rest mode .
I love the idea of this device, but I have recently realized I prefer gaming on the TV compared to anything else, especially the Nintendo switch. I can see how this would be a total win if the TV was in use at my house and I still wanted to play though.
It would make sense if console could recognize when portal is being used and not switch to tv during this time. I think this is something they could easily implement.
It looks cool. As far as Bluetooth, someone will make a clip-on attachment that connects to the headphone port. Maybe when it's on sale I'll get one
Very likely something like a usb-C bluetooth adaptor will be out there soon.

Last I checked, the remote play app only let's me stream games up to 720p.

As a dad with 2 kids aged 2 and 4 and a third kid on the way, my play time has decreased soooo significantly. I’m glad to be getting this next week. Sometimes I just want to sit and play in bed for 30 minutes instead of having to lug myself downstairs to the living room. And I can also play this at work on my breaks. I will admit that being able to download at the very least one full game on this would have been awesome, but I’m fine with what it is. Beats a backbone and a phone any day.
Why not just get a steam deck? I've got 2 little ones too and it's been great to have, but a good bit of that has been when out of the house, where this thing is gonna be a nightmare to even try and use. Even if it didn't have proprietary headphones (which is so anti-consumer it's almost unbelievable) I just don't understand the appeal over something like a deck
Just buy any other Handheld console, I would recommend Logitech G cloud, An Android based handheld meant for Native android gaming and cloud gaming specifically.
If you budget allows, You can look for much more powerful HANDHELD PC like Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion go.
Third one coming you will have no time to play.
Buy an dedicated handheld so you can game anywhere then, you have downtime outside of the house to..

This is great for me from my TV hawking wife and her RUclips videos in our hangout room. I was almost about to purchase a second tv for the room. Not anymore, picking mine up on my lunch break today!
I'm eagerly waiting to see reviews on the earbuds specifically. I've had my galaxy buds (first gen) since they came out a few years back, so I need a new pair of earbuds.
My main question will be microphone quality, to help decide if I can just ditch my headphones for gaming completely. Also love the multiple link option, because I game on both PS5 and PC, so having the option to switch between platforms instantly with just the need for a second link really intrigues me!

I have this pre-ordered and I can't wait to get it. Since I got my Switch a few months ago most of my time gaming on it has been in handheld mode while I'm lying in bed, so I'm very excited to be able to play my PS5 games in the same manner. Plus, since I can get a bit of gaming in right before I go to sleep, I feel this will help me get through my crazy backlog a lot faster. I tried streaming my games to my tablet with remote play and it didn't work for shit so I, for one, think this a great accessory solely dedicated for remote play.
Im excited to get my hands on this mine just shipped! Hopefully it works pretty good while traveling of course dependent on wifi wherever I am

what you said about being a dad not being able to game for hours on end i felt that.. the exactly reason why i could not wait for mine and why i bought one, there’s reasons beyond it being a dedicated portable gaming system that are for beneficial for the average gamer that isn’t 12-18 years of age

Something about the portal screams playing it safe. Like Sony wanted something that could work on a basic level. It looks similar to the WiiU which I love but I expect more from Sony. Maybe in the future they will release a more advanced version of the portal with more features and options. Looking forward to seeing gameplay footage from the avg consumer.
thats what i said, its really frustrating because with devices like the steam deck, you have this amazing handheld that can do amazing things, but its kinda out there and not mainstream the way playstation is, and if they made a hardcore handheld that could do something like play ps4 games portably, that would be insane. unfortunately, it seems like the only reason they didnt was because of how bad the vita flopped, and they were afraid to touch the handheld market again. i see the remote play thing as kind of a fad, as with any new way to play your home consoles on the go, because theres just not fast enough wifi in places i would want to use this over just hooking my phone up and grabbing my dualsense at home. give us a device that can play modern games portably and you've got a hot device that will sell like crazy, especially with how the playstation ecosystem is working now, with the new playstation sync for bluetooth headphones, people will snap up everything sony would have to offer. this just felt like sony saying "lets release a cheap android phone with a dualsense glued to it, and then only have the android phone use the playstation remote play app".

I feel l got scammed by PlayStation lmao. I have a 120 oled TV so I don’t see myself even using it even if it wasn’t stuttering yk? it’s different when it’s the switch because internet works great with it, take it anywhere, and it has OLED lmao. so idk. kinda a waste of money for portal but I got it because I wanted to try it out.
As a person who is about to be on bed rest for 6 weeks or so…this is awesome , especially for th price point. The fact that it is precisely an ‘Accessory’ and not a direct Switch competitor like the option and don’t have the long list of expectations. But I can see where someone at PlayStation should have said…‘Let’s make a switch killer’ and probably set out to do so but maybe this was the best option for now. But honestly, if not for the change in mobility coming up I might not see it the same way. But Sony, you are on the right track here…..keep pushing.

To anyone wondering, I think you could buy a Bluetooth aux end to put in your controller so you could use with any Bluetooth headphones.
Umm. No lol. You cannot pair airpods or wireless earbuds because the aux end will go into the portal. It’s not a car, where you find the adapter on your phone. Nice try though

I’m torn on this. Similarly to you would love to use my PS5 more, but being a Dad, and my partner enjoying her trashy to, I don’t get so often. It looks cool, but…..is it still too small? Are there other devices that would work better? I am thinking about using a MacBook Pro for remote play instead (obviously use the laptop for other things too!) Also intrigued in knowing by the way, can it be used as a second controller for the PS5?
Buying a Logitech G cloud will be better, It uses the same technology, Looks better, Have actual integrated hardware and comes in same price range. You can even play Android games on it natively without connecting it to the Internet.

Interested to see if the Pulse Explore will work with the Nintendo switch since it has the link adapter. If it does, that’ll be a great competitor to the Genki Waveform

I almost got a backbone for remote play but the full-size controller with the haptic feedback is important to me. I also looked into getting a mount for remote play on my phone, but nothing looked comfortable or convenient. Also, I really didn't want to use my phone as a screen. I play the Switch more than PS5 because I always play my switch lounging in my bed or couch, and this is exactly what I wanted for my PS5.

Got the Psvr2 now this handy little gadget, which im thinking of grabbing one for myself. It's perfect if the t.v. is being taken up by the kids or wife. We're spoiled for options!
The Portal will be a nice Christmas gift, I can see myself in the cold winter months playing games tucked in bed under a warm duvet. The only thing I'm worried about is my internet connection, I wonder if it will be good enough for this, we still don't have fiber internet in my small town.
As a dad I agree my ps 5 was just collecting dust cause my son is a toddler and grabs everything and tv is always in use with this I have bin able to play more and it feels good

There are pros and cons for the PlayStation Portal.
But the most worried thing is analog drift on both sticks especially it's really frequent on the dualsense controller.
Yup. I had my launch ps4 controller the entire generation. My ps5 controller which I got with the GOW bundle last November already has really bad stick drift
Sorry for the question but do you need to plug the dongle into your ps5 in order to use the pulse earbuds for the PlayStation portal or is it connecting directly to the portal?
Do you need a router to stream games from PS5? Or can it also connect directly to the PS5? If its router only then that is a deal breaker might as well get the Steam Deck OLED
Watching this video I feel like PlayStation is testing this device and if it works great they will send an update to make the portal able to play on the go .. remember I said it first 🙏🏽

The portal can be played on the go. And this device is the result of remote play testing on the phone etc . Lol it makes 0 sense for Sony to create a stand alone portable device . You don’t even want that you just don’t know it yet lol.
I want to know about that drift. They haven’t advertised replacement thumb sticks & that’s already a Duel Sense Edge feature. I hope they don’t hit us a year or 2 down the line with an “upgraded” version.

Everyone suggesting a Steam Deck is missing the point. It’s twice the price and twice as heavy. I already have a a library of PlayStation games that I just want to play not tethered to the TV. I don’t want a whole new system with a remote play app and its own eco system of games. Yes we can already connect a controller to a phone and use the app, but this is a dedicated solution without the hassle and compromise.

I hope they will add a feature to allow you to use it as a controller, just think of a upgraded DreamCast Controller. Playing Madden and being able to pick your plays on the Portal or having maps or inventory on it. Nice video UrAvgConsumer any give aways shoot them this way>
It is a controller, you just can't do Wii-U style stuff because the ps5 OS and games are not designed to do that.

Technically you can use it this way because it’s essentially doing remote play. If you just turn on the display that your ps5 is connected to, you should see everything responding as if you’re using a controller.

Hi , I’m new to your channel and I love your wholesome content on tech . You might not read this but I have a few questions on the portal. Can you use it as a controller too if you playing ps5 on the tv , like if your friends come over and you need a extra controller? And the second question could you stream your Apple TV on the portable or like RUclips if it is on your console. Sorry if it is dumb questions.
Though I haven't got any hands on experience with the device but based on the research I've done, you can't stream any other content to the PS Portal besides games, that's PS4 and PS5 games. Not sure about using it as an additional controller, though I don't think Sony has gone down that route. I mean, they still want you to buy the dual sense, which is why I think they are releasing various colours. I guess we will know for sure soon enough.

It’s definitely more than just a novelty lol, it has a lot of benefits for those that have a ps5 but dont feel like or just dont get the chance to play on their tv

Streaming on the Portal, will be far superior than any expensive Phone or Tablet or any other of the new handheld pc's because it strips all the unimportant stuff and operating system and all its performance goes into streaming at the highest quality .

What a waste of a product. Sonny could’ve killed the market and instead they locked down the wireless headphones to their proprietary pair. for $200 so he could’ve just added Bluetooth compatibility and they would’ve sold tons of these. Instead, this project will just die like the PSP and probably sell less.

I think Sony missed the mark with the ps portal, definitely could’ve tapped into the mobile game, stream deck market and would’ve killed it.
Why would you want that ? We don’t need teams splitting up to do mobile and PS5 games. We needs teams fully focused on the PS5 and only the PS5 especially with how long it takes to make games now. This also an accessory not a handheld.
@@hipten because sometimes you want to game on the go correct? But you’re not always able to bring your ps5 but still want a PlayStation experience. Think about playing Spider-Man on a plane ride or on your break at work. It opens up a field for ps5 experience on the go with the luxury of still having remote play when you want to be more up and personal at home.
@@hipten and I know it’s an accessory but it’s also $200, without the feature to have games stored on a cloud and ready to go. Think back 2012/2013 with the ps vita! It sold great, had remote play with the ps3/ps4 with its own exclusive titles as well. This thing has a nice screen and a great design as far as keeping the layout of the controller. Sony definitely missed the mark with making the PlayStation 5 experience something you can take advantage anywhere.
How would effect your competitive game play would it be a lag in your game play when playing people online ?
Question - can it be used as a normal controller when not in remote play mode? I only have one Dualsense, so this would be handy for split screen games also if it did.
I mean, you could use the DualSense controller with a guest profile, that’s what I did with my PC to play Sackboy with 4 people, have 3 DualSense controllers, two of which are logged into a Guest Account, my own controller’s logged into my main account, and my PC/Mac/iPad/iPhone are connected to my dad’s/the family account
