Dear Kevin, thanks for all your great work, we really appreciate everything you put out there for us. There are not many entrepreneurs like you. And I know this can't be easy, it needs a lot of courage to do all of that. Can't wait to hear your news!
This deserves a like and share. As a Wordpress user since 2008 I couldn’t agree more. Focus on the fundamentals first should always be the core principle.
Just for some perspective: I'm a Webflow dev that jumped back into WordPress for a project after a few years of being away. And the FRUSTRATION. Every tutorial on even the simplest thing would eventually devolve into "and then I use this premium plugin" to get (what I had assumed) to be rather basic functionality. Everybody are using different tools and different workflows and different page-builders and taking shortcuts and I can't figure out what's "best practice" or a "hack." There are such fundamental differences between full-site-editing themes and non-fse themes that I get whipash every time I try something different. I honestly don't remember it being this bad when I stopped using WordPress a few years ago. This video hits the nail on the head.
@@Gearyco This is true, but paying extra for 'collections' in Webflow was enough to make me go back to WordPress. The Webflow pricing is nauseating (then again, so is the pricing for small Woocommerce plugins). What we really need is openmage + a decent blog and page builder.
Excellent video Kevin and I'm in total agreement with you. When I was a software engineer, all the tools we used were aimed at the professional market. It is quite amazing to me that someone in Wordpress ecosystem decided to go for the "anyone can us it" approach - it totally devalues the industry. You cannot design and build a website without putting the working into to learning how to do it and do it properly. Those that defend the current system are just in denial (confirmation bias?) and when you are in that state, you lose your impartiality - there is also no incentive for WordPress to sort the main issues out. I'm so looking forward to Etch! Thanks again for everything you do for us all!
I have to agree with you there. It's hard to take Wordpress seriously at this stage and as for bringing people around, as you say, it looks like they are mainly impervious to listening.
As a developer, I used to feel embarassed to tell others that I used Wordpress till Bricks came along. Happy to see Kevin changing the game. Still, we can't ignore the reality that websites are getting easier and faster to build. Development is seen as a cost center. Then there are web design influencers propagating the idea that clients don't care about what stack you use as long get the job done. Technically, they are not wrong but as a service provider, maintenance costs will compound. It's up to the devs themselves to communicate and justify technical decisions. I suppose Etch is for people who care about quality and doing things right the first time.
> It is quite amazing to me that someone in Wordpress ecosystem decided to go for the "anyone can us it" approach - it totally devalues the industry This is a bonkers thing to say about a system that was developed as a way to democratize publishing on the web. Like, I also have a lot of feelings about the lack of professionalism in WordPress - the lack of editorial workflows that work for larger teams is a particular issue - but the idea that "someone" in the WordPress ecosystem decided that they should follow an "anyone can use it" model as opposed to being a fundamental philosophical starting point for the open source project I feel shows a big lack of understanding about the project in of itself.

@@Gearyco Thanks. That helps. I do know of Jaime's video - which references the talk The Future of WordPress - Noel Tock at WordCamp Asia 2024
I hope I’m back from the hospital in time. This is so blinkin’ typical!
Oh no, everything ok?
Not really. Been ill since January. Here for a PetCT. Been here for 2 hours & still waiting. I hope I can catch up with a replay of it. Wishing you every success - I’m sure this will be the case. Waiting for September ❤!
@@LupusDesign ugh, so sorry to hear that :/ -- Sending positive vibes your way for a turnaround!
@@LupusDesign Man I hope you'll be well again soon. Sending my best wishes!
@@GearycoThank you Kevin!
Amen.
thanks for your work! I am very excited. It can only be good!
Holly Molly this is also going to be goooood.
Starting to sound a lot like "Bricks for pros" and while I do agree with this direction as a whole (if that is what etch is) I just hope that the massive community of early adopting users needed can be found to keep this alive long enough for roots to take shape.
Think bigger.
So exciting mate!
Agree, WP needs a core update/redesign ASAP, Thanks Kev!
Kevin Geary, Keep it up, and let's collab sometime!

Top of his game! Can't wait
Yayyyy! I made it!
We switched to webflow and framer long ago man…
Bummer :/
where is the "take my money" button... can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve...
such a tease 😆
Masterclass on how to take over an entire industry! It’s been amazing watching Kevin work. He had me at Owl spacing 😂.
OG!
Gutenberg was so badly executed it hurts. Wordpress is hurting. Do you think wordpress will have a saying in the ecom space?
100% Agree. I'm a die hard WP user but for large projects I moved to react and next js. its just more reliable and scalable.
Gah, lost another 🥺
How do your clients edit the sites, are you using a headless cms?
Powerful video Kevin!
This sounds great and all... but what is the product? Another builder?
We don't build "another" anything.
@@Gearyco So... it's a builder?
@@theiceman316 half the people think it's "another" CMS. Or "another" WP UI tool. And on and on. So, just wanted to clarify that it's not another anything.
your smile tells everything 😄
Looking forward to it!
Yeh I've lost enthusiasm for expanding my developer skillset in wordpress. It's like an uphill battle, constantly having to rationalise and decide which method/plugin/framework/solution to use, in order to achieve a basic requirement. Especially when it comes to e-commerce.
E-commerce is a beast
Thanks for your video!
You might be doing a disservice to the products you already have available by keeping this under wraps. It could be a barrier to those who have yet to purchase your tools, as this feels like it could be slotted in and cost another fistful of cash for a very limited amount of activations. Beyond that, you've created a video called "Dear WordPress" and linked it to Etch without really giving a clear reason why, or even what it is. Not trolling, just not sure what the purpose was of throwing the two into the same bowl and mixing them up and then keeping a huge part of it secret.
It’ll be ok. I’m a professional. people who own ACSS and frames will be happy they do. Etch only adds value to their existing life.
Okay. Stay closed to honest, non-trolling observations from prospective clients and choose to be thin-skinned.
Very sure I never questioned your professionalism. I am now.
I guess you don't think the people behind WordPress are professionals? (Rhetorical question since you obviously don't... judging by your own response.)
Hubris is not your friend.
Have a great day.
You're close to becoming a meme now, Kevin. Ego... the great destroyer.
This is exactly on point! 100% agreed and hope WP higher ups take note.
All the feedback seems to be overwhelmingly positive. I'm curious, has there been any significant negative pushback, or even negative interaction on this yet?
Nope. Not by anyone with a real account. Just a few resident trolls who attack anything and everything I do.
@@Gearyco trolls become white noise quickly, easy to tune out.
Looking forward!
Me too!
Ready 😎
Cannot wait 🤓
Please for the love of God, you missed several points.
You missed that we also need integration with Social Login. Please we need native Social Login integration.
We also need the top 1000 Plugins or so to be compatible with each other.
What is ETCH again?
well said man
got my tissue paper ready
Can't wait :). I like the new shirt though.
Woot woot! I can’t wait! 😃🙌🏻
Is Etch a fork of WordPress or a headless version for CMS?
Not a fork.
WORDPRESS RIOT IS HEEEERE!!!
So you are giving up on ACSS?
We just spent $50k+ rebuilding it, what do you think?
@@Gearyco great news
Meh, I and our clients love Gutenberg. We've embraced it.
Perfect. Make sure you attend the livestream.
