I do not see a Gus Walz who is disabled ... I see a loving son who has the ability to be proud of his father and does not hesitate to show it.
I live in Catalonia, Spain. I have a son with learning disabilities, and here they integrate all children with disabilities into the state system . In each class there is a teacher and a psychologist. Some classes are "special" for the children with disabilities and others the children are in "normal" classes, when this happens they are assisted with a helper. This is all in the state system (and free) and I am so grateful.

America has a lot to learn from other democratic countries, not just on integrating children with disabilities, but also on healthcare, free college tuition, childcare and social security.
In the states we have the Individualized Education Program, which was adopted as part of our Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act, in our public schools. The IEP itself is a document which outlines the specific strengths and needs of any student up to age 22 who is deemed in need of Specialized Education. Input from educators, parents/guardians, clinicians, and, when appropriate and feasible, the child, is required and recorded during annual meetings where the IEP is created and/or amended for the school year. Focus on specific and changing educational environments and settings is given with an aim towards the least restrictive learning environment possible, while still protecting the overall wellness of the child.

I think Fair wages for teachers would make the biggest difference for kids. Right now, our kids are being taught by people who live in poverty, work second and third jobs, and are totally disengaged with teaching.

As a mother of an autistic son, i was moved to tears.
So was I. My instant reaction when I saw Gus, was that he looked exactly as my son. Not the face, but his expression and body language. And it was such a lovely moment to see that family embrace each other.
And then that Coulter woman. Meeeh. So what was her problem? Does she not know what love is? Probably not.
I am so proud of Gus Walz. Most teenagers would be embarrassed to show love for their parents in public, but not this wonderful young man. Just because someone is young doesn't mean you can't learn from them. God bless your heart, Gus. ❤❤😊😊 🙏 🙏

The embrace between Tim and Gus is not about disability. It's pure love and affection between a father and his son. The body language is quite strong and shows a genuine, undeniable, strong connection. Gus is so sweet and his pure joy is contagious. I wish this family nothing but the best.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve worked with the disabled for years. Being non verbal is not uncommon with these individuals. We incorporated sign language into all segments of the teaching day. From the lunch room, library, school buses, and classrooms. We started with those as young as 2. It opened up their quality of life by being able to communicate. Well done to Gus’s team. He is able to express himself. This is Hugh.
I applaud you for your good works. I did read Tim Walz' interview where he explained Gus's disability is a bit of a misnomer. His son doesn't have trouble speaking or understanding speech. He has trouble with non verbal skills, social cues, reading a situation correctly, etc. It's confusing.
Nonverbal Learning Disability isn’t about not being able to talk. It means we have difficulty learning nonverbal skills like riding a bike, using tools, or understanding nonverbal social cues. Our verbal skills and working memory are very strong, but we struggle with literally everything else
I hate the name, because the one time people talk about my disability in the news everyone confuses it with Level 3 Autism (a very different condition) and start making assumptions about how intelligent Gus is
We have difficulty with emotional regulation and navigating social interactions, but most of us with NVLD have an average or above average verbal IQ

He’s not non-verbal. He has a non-verbal learning disability. He can talk okay, from what we know. He would more have trouble with stuff like math and spatial awareness. He also isn’t formally diagnosed autistic.

I'd never seen Gus before this moment at DNC and my goodness, he had me in bits, I was just so overwhelmed by his pride in his Dad, and his emotion and love, it was so pure and beautiful. We need more of this in the world, it made my day much brighter having the privilege to witness that moment. Thank you the Waltz family.

I was in tears when Gus cried, saying this is my dad. I have a nephew with epilepsy; we all love and help him; of course, we look out for him, but we do not treat him like a freak show. He is loved very well, and no one thinks he is not worth loving.

My father and my mother passed away 17 year and 12 year ago, I miss them almost everyday especially as a single mother raising my daughter by my self. Hell, if that was me in the crowd watching my dad deliver a heartfelt speech infront of THOUSANDS of people who love him, I cant say i would have held it together as well as Gus. Gus made me cry ! Wow how powerful ! My brother was handicapped with heart and lungs issues, and could never participate in physical activities. He died on the operating table during heart surgery, and it changed my life because I was only 13 at the time. His life inspired me to write a novel about planet earth's future and how kids should be treated with dignity and respect! I finished college for a second time, and am writing this novel now. This kid is SO PROUD of his dad - what a GIFT for Tim and his wife. This was meant to happen ---- people can see now why Tim is the nominee for Vice President - he is so relatable and his family is so down to earth. GO HARRIS AND TIM !! Trump on the other hand ------ told his nephew to let his disabled son die and move to Florida ! Coulter is no better than Trump - pure EVIL!

The most memorable moment of the Democratic Convention was, as i see it, not the hosts, the guests, speakers or the nomimees. It was the words of a young man, tears streaming down his face, crying tears of joy, love and admiration. "That’s my dad. That’s my dad." Beautiful.
