- Happy 20th anniversary to the original Ratchet & Clank!
You may be aware that the music from the first Ratchet & Clank game (composed by the wonderful David Bergeaud) is mono, meaning that the left and right ears hear the same thing and all the sound feels like it's coming from one speaker right in front of you, rather than from all around. This is my attempt at rectifying that.

Upon discovering that tools like splitter.ai exist, which use neural networks to attempt to split audio files into individual instrument tracks, I immediately asked myself 'Can I use this to make the original mono R&C soundtrack stereo?'
Transforming a mono track into stereo is hard. You're essentially trying to create stereo information out of nothing. Previous attempts in the R&C community at 'stereoizing' the original mono tracks from R&C involved using a classic trick where an echo is added to the original track which is opposite in phase between the left and right ears, essentially panning some frequencies left and some right. While this does make things 'wider', the instruments still all feel like they're positioned in front of you, but this time with a little more 'space' where some notes jump slightly right and some slightly left. And while these efforts were commendable, clearly more drastic measures needed to be taken to get the music sounding truly stereo.
What started as an exercise involving simply panning the AI separated instruments left and right turned into a full high quality remaster in an attempt to really bring out as much detail as possible and honor the excellence of these tracks. The mono tracks didn't just lose stereo information, they lost balancing, where the process of collapsing two channels into one created mud and clutter (at least to my ear) which I've tried to tease out while adding a bit more sparkle and shine to the tracks. These remasters are far from perfect, and aside from my still-developing skills needing sharpening I was wrestling the whole time with an AI which insisted that, in the middle of a bar, a violin was no longer part of the string section but should suddenly be reclassified as a drum, tossing the instrument into a completely different stem and thus throwing off my efforts to pan things consistently. As such, you may hear some instruments jump around the stereo field occasionally. As these stem splitting tools improve, one day I may have another crack at this challenge. That is unless an official stereo remaster is released!
In the meantime, I hope you can all enjoy this remaster as a new take on the soundtrack to many of our childhoods. And if not, keep listening to this banger of a soundtrack in mono, it still sounds great that way too.
Should the rights holders see this release as not falling under fair use, or should there be an official release of the soundtrack, email me at fuzzballandthetincan@gmail.com to request takedown and I will promptly comply.
~Xotla
P.S. Yes, I know, 'separates' and 'conceived' appear to be spelt wrong in the credits. I'll have you know however that the dictionary is now obsolete and my chosen spellings supersede those found in common parlance. Видеоклипы
Hi All! Thanks so much for listening :)
Please note that this was a fun little project I spent no more than a few hours on, and I never expected it to explode like it has! Had I known, I would have spent a lot more time paying attention to each track, but as it stands the tracks were all processed together with each 'stem' being made up of all relevant instruments from every track in succession. What this means is that I only ever had one big master file containing every track, and pulling out each individual track separately for release would be another whole project in itself. This, coupled with the fact that the project is stored on my old computer which I no longer use and may or may not even still have the original split stems stored unfortunately means that releasing the tracks for download isn't currently on the cards. I'd hoped (and still hold out for) an official release one day, but in the meantime I hope you can enjoy this soundtrack nonetheless.
If you're looking for more RaC style music, check out my channel where you can hear tracks I've composed (and am currently composing) for a work in progress ratchet and clank fan game :)
Thanks again everyone!
much love for this project
this OST is one of my favourite things in existence
I keep returning to this video xd
Thanks for making this! Still feels unreal that we can now listen to the whole ost in stereo. I have been asking Insomniac and David Bergeaud about the release of the ost's since like 2004, but after 20 years still nothing...I'm sure one day they will release them :)
How did you get the actual project files?
The immense fidelity added to these tracks makes me more upset that the remake dropped the OST for a plain and serviceable "scifi orchestral" score
the remake was such an insult to the original series i refuse to play ever play it and just pretend it doesn't even exist
the remake OST was the very definition of generic, can't believe they looked at all these amazing themes and the love for them from the fans and thought "yeah let's just scrap it all"
DROPPED THE OST?! And they dare call it a remaster. Re-duction more like
Hot take: the remake gameplay was fantastic if seen as a separate game, but it definitely doesn’t feel like the old one at all
@@TheBeaverCommentator not really a hot take, many people liked it because it was good game, but comparing to the original - remake falls short. Humor, characterization, music - it's downgraded.
This is so unbelievably uncanny, i cannot describe my happiness hearing this masterpiece FINALLY in stereo
hell yeah
I couldn’t even tell a difference but that’s just because I can’t enjoy anything that’s stereo since I can only hear on one side
uncanny dum dum dum dum du du du du
unbelievably what now....
pov you dont know what uncanny means
David Bergeaud, the composer, have a really good knowledge of colors and textures both in orchestral, and electronic writing, the combinaisons of the 2 principes whitin it's advanced harmonic system do a very good job.
in 2009 i kept searching for all th songs and i found them on a wierd shitty site named beemp3. I belive that all the songs are from that or from direct video game rips
what kind of word salad bullshit is this nothing you said means anything lmao
@@lv1543 ??
Okay for starters, these sites upload pirated copies. That is by no means the origin of this album
If you're implying David Bergeaud ripped off the R&C music... The game was released in 2002, half a decade before 2009
If you're implying this video we're watching is ripped from somewhere, it doesn't have to be. Pretty sure you can buy legal copies.
@@mar_speedman no i meant i belive that people uploaded those soundtrack dumps from the game rips onto beemp3 and then those beemp3 game rip files found their way on youtube
@@lv1543 bro you really unearthed memories with the beemp3 namedrop wow i almost forgot about it
Nothing beats the orginal soundtrack of R&C, this is a delight to listen to. I'm noticing sounds I hardly heard in the game.
I can reconigize every planet visited with only hear a second of this fantastic music, god tier

thank youuuuu. the most underrated banger on the whole soundtrack.
Wasn't the only one xD.
Shame it was the worst planet though

I will never forget the Sony PlayStation 2 demo disc with the Ratchet and Clank demo on it. It contained two levels: Kerwan Metropolis and Rilgar Blackwater City. I played the demo over dozens of time and then I got the full game of Ratchet and Clank on my birthday in early 2003.
bro we lived the sam life except i had the jam pack 03 with going commando where you got to fight the red robots and be giant clank.just that alone made me want this game so that was the next game me and my brother got and been hooked ever since
Sameeeee bro i played the CRAP out of that demo. Those 2 levels got me hooked
Yes! You are the ONLY person I've ever heard mentioning that demo disc! Scee hits 2003, I think? Also my very first exposure to ratchet and clank! Cheers
@@AskTorin It was a demo disc from the year 2002.
I played that demo in 2002 in Toys R Us. Managed to get it for Christmas that year. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years 🤯
There are things I'm hearing now I've never heard in the original release: That wobble effect on Gorda City Ruins 1:09:29 ...*chef's kiss*
Amazing work! You can easily hear the different layers of the tracks now without them competing with each other in the same audio space. I've played the original R&C countless times as it's an all-time favorite of mine, and I'm only now hearing these little details for the first time. My love for this soundtrack has only deepened now.
I also really appreciate you adding the transition sounds and using gameplay screenshots to show the areas the tracks play in. It's a little bit of extra detail that goes a long way to immerse you, now that we have this in stereo.
Always worth the extra detail for the people who notice!
Damn it’s actually crazy how well i remember some of these tracks after like 15 years. Iconic for sure.
20 years.
Wow, I can't believe legendary R&C is now 21 years old! Doesn't time fly by?
It really does man 🥺❤️
It’s 20 years old. Unless ur counting the development too
@@fagglebag Wikipedia states 2002 as the release date, now we have 2023, so 21 years
But it also states November 2002 so it’s actually 20 years (you are correct). There, confusion lifted, I hope.
I think I just cared way too much about this
@@core36 yh that was my line of thought lol
It sure does. 🥲
i miss this music so much. the ps2 R&C games weren't just the funniest games (in my opinion), but they had the BEST music in the whole series.
A big throwback to the earliest days of January 2003 for me! On that moment I got the first Ratchet and Clank game as a birthday present. Almost twenty years ago and I still play this gem and it's successors!
Truly one of the best soundtracks a game can have
Funny, I just emailed David an hour before I found this vid asking if he had any plans to do some sort of album release of the Ratchet & Clank OST in Stereo Form for the upcoming 20th anniversary. Just gotta say this is outstanding and if separated versions could be made extended or not, I know that would be appreciated amongst us.
You gotta tell us what he says
@@Cade_The_Squirrel Aight well he still uses the email on his website so here was the email correspondence:
JVP: Good day David,
With the upcoming 20th anniversary of the release of Ratchet & Clank, I was wondering if there would be a possibility of an album release of all the tracks from the first game in Stereo form. I know there exist a fair few of the tracks from the beta version of the game, but some of them (notably being the Aridia Outpost X11) are only partly complete with some of my other favorites like Gaspar and the second Outpost X11 lacking a version entirely. I’m not sure if there would be an issue of ownership over the rights to the music as I’m not particularly informed as to whether Sony or you holds the rights. All I know is your soundtracks for the Ratchet and Clank series have been a core component of my early life that I still listen to this day, with your soundtrack from Going Commando containing most of my favorites.
Sincerely,
A longtime fan of your work, Jake

DB: Hi Jake,
Thanks for taking the time to write me and for your kind words. I am sorry to say that the stereo masters have not been released yet - I get that request all the time and hope some day to get the paperwork sorted out with Sony & Insomniac. I’ve tried a couple of times. I’ll try contacting them again this winter. I’ll let you know if/when we release them.
Warm regards,
David B.
Pretty nice to see it's still something that he has considered in recent times.
Wow I didn't expect that they might actually get released this long after! I'll definitely wait it out then, and when (if) it happens I'll take down this video to make sure people can find the official and much better versions!
@@JVPTH3MVP what I really want is for David and Sony/Insomniac to work out a deal to release the music from 1 to Quest for Booty on modern platforms like spotify
@@JVPTH3MVP This response makes me giddy. I feel like we gotta start a Twitter campaign to put some pressure on Insomnaic to work with David on this
I love revisiting the OST every now and then. R&C1 literally is lightning in a jar for me
revisit the games too i play the first 3 titles every year, nowadays on emulator cause they good really good before i actually got my ps2 back out
"Kerwan - Metropolis" is THE Ratchet and Clank song for me. Thank you for this excellent remaster.
This doesn't have enough views, this is fantastic! I've wished RAC 1 was stereo for a long time, and now it is!
tbh, I do find it impressive for an unofficial stereo remaster
The tracks on the demo disc were in stereo, I still wonder why they scrapped them and replaced them with mono tracks
@@ningulussons3335 i believe it was to save on memory space, games had to be much smaller back then and stereo is double the file size
Why does this go so hard? I forgot how good of a soundtrack R&C has! 🌀🔫
Me too👌💯
In my opinion, they can make new ground in tech and graphics all they want, but nothing will ever compare to how much the ps2 rocked the gaming scene, and theses games and music are just a testament to that fact.
so true. no gaming console has ever come close to the absolute vibes the ps2 radiated. like a stick of uranium, the vibes just infuse into everything it touches.
PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, they all upped the standards in such a way.
Yeah, because in these eras, video games had souls. Now, it's unfinished games at full retail price littered with DLC.
no way, you stereod them ALL? now that's a proper way to celebrate an anniversary! great work
I always come back to this video because it sounds way too good. Thank you for this remaster that let us truly appreciate David Bergeaud work.
It's an absolute travesty that the R&C remake abandoned this soundtrack in favor of generic orchestral stuff. Ruined the entire product for me.
I never realised how much is going on in the hoverboard race track, it's genuinely incredible hearing it like this
Currently having an outer body experience at 4 am. My mouth is foaming and ive just emptied my childhood all over my laptop. Thanks for this. R&C 4 LYFE!!!!!!
Seriously, what a fantastic soundtrack. I have no nostalgia for this game... I never played it; my parents never bought it for me when I was a kid and I still never have, but the music is so good and catchy that this video has stayed in a pinned tab on both my home and work computers for nearly a month. Thank you for compiling this with stereo; it's great!
You should totally get a copy of the trilogy and play them on an emulator or original hardware. You won't be disappointed!
@wrigglyboi I actually already did lol. And you're right, I've been having a blast.
incredible work, the way this soundtrack melds so many genres of music so seamlessly, especially that like stereotypical alien whirring sounds? in orchestral chiptune music? blows my mind to this day
Gemlik Base in stereo ❤️❤️
was so good
Any other soundtracks you'd like to see remastered? Let me know!
Well since you remastered this soundtrack, I would like to see 2, 3, and Deadlocked remastered
Also you did a good job with remastering this, if only we got a remaster instead of a crappy childish reboot for the ps4, and I’m glad Ratchet & Clank is turning 20 Years old, the first game still holds up and it’s pretty cool to play, and pretty good for a ps2 game for it’s time, and it’s still a favorite game, even tho A Crack in Time will always be my #1 Fave
And for what I have to say is… I will always hold Ratchet and Clank and Insomniac Games in my heart (and leave out the bad Ratchet & Clank games far behind)
@@purr-fectcatstudios5195 There's no need to remaster the other R&C OSTs, seeing as the rest of the series is in stereo
Original spyro soundtrack?
the entire trilogy tbh

I remember as a kid I loved the sound track of this game, for the first time in my life I watched the credits scroll and saw a familiar name pop up in the credits, to my amazement I saw that is was my year 5 teacher who worked on this sound development of this game, the next day I rushed to school just to ask my teacher if he worked on the game and his eyes lit up! He looked at me and said “shh” with the biggest grin on his face, my jaw dropped and my eyes widened. I was also his worse student when I got to his class because I sucked at maths.
Who is he?
that is super cool, whats his name
@@IIIISai Hideo Kojima, I was there. The whole class looked to the left after a bit of pause from cheering and saw Todd Howard wink and the roared with cheer.
@@ToaHurlak52 wow
What a fake story
I'm amazed at how many of these tracks still live in my head rent free even after 20 years. If that's not a testament to a well constructed score then I dont know what is.
You are a real hero for that reddit comment about the scales used in R&C, I've been scratching my head for a while trying to figure out what gives Deadlocked (and the other titles in the series) that cold, gritty sound. Thanks!
Yes I remember that! I was thinking one day it would be fun to do a breakdown analysis of how the ratchet and clank music works
for Deadlocked i'm thinking phrygian scale?
Its got that perfect late 90s early 2000s sci fi matrixy music vibe, hits me right in the nostalgia core, thank you for uploading this.
This comment. My same exact thought. ✊
By the way, your stereo remastered version of this soundtrack is very beautiful! Man I miss the old Ratchet & Clank video games!
Gemlik Base is maybe one of the greatest pieces of music in any video game. To hear it in such high fidelity makes me happier than you could ever know. Thank you for this!
Happy Anniversary to Ratchet & Clank 2002 20 years later and still and is a excellent game.
This is fantastic work. So happy to see that others have not let the 20th anniversary slip by. I think this really elevates some tracks like Hoven which normally feel muted and drowned out.
yeah, I'm very happy about this. I love these games and their music
YOU’RE AMAZING
My heart skipped a beat hearing how wonderful Aridia sounds here.
I love R&C1 so much and am so giddy folks are still putting in the work to preserve it like this.
My mind ascended into heaven when hearing metropolis in stereo

55:33 - Pokitaru - Sewers has gotta be the most underrated track in the game.
The Jetfighter track in Pokitaru hits SO hard now! Awesome job!

I love the scratches in these songs!
Today I just randomly wanted to pull out my PS2 and play Ratchet and Clank after a long time.
Im so glad of this random thoughts that come to mind from time to time.
The way this all ended made me chuckle like I was a kid again. Outstanding job, and that final mashup was the true gold bolt.
I love listening to remastered game music, it’s way better than you realise. All the R&C music is so well composed, it’s crazy.
Best ost in the series.
Amazing what can be done with AI these days. Been listening to this at work and it's unreal being able to hear this OST in such crisp quality, especially after the years of people trying and failing to emulate a stereo sound.
Man this OST didnt have to slap this hard, its taken 8 year old me 10years + to listen to this (now) and truly grasp this musical genious.
This is fantastic! A shame that the whole soundtrack hasn't been officially released in stereo yet, but this is a great taste of what it could be
That opening was perfect, I also love the render tracks in between songs. Great work!
Holy SHIT this is so fucking good. I love you for doing this.
It’s a real blast from the past, isn’t it?
Really cool never knew the audio was mono like that when I was a kid I never played with headset in 2002 when I was 5 years old lol so it never really mattered but this is cool, keep it up
This is what the ps4 soundtrack should have been like at the very least 😭
I always knew the beta versions were different but most of its so subtle that its hard to tell the difference but the remaster defenitly makes those differences more clear
This is incredible! From the music to the level transition sounds, dynamic background, and the epic mash-up at the end - I love how everything about this video stays true to the original R&C game. I hope somebody mods this soundtrack into the game in PCSX2/AetherSX2.
Man music tracks back then were something else so many good ost from the late 90's-early 00's
Kerwan in the Metropolis area is such a nostalgic piece to me. I remember when I was in fourth or fifth grade and had played the demo of the game over and over waiting for it to release.
It's got a little dirt to it, but I kind like that. Makes it feel like it's a boombox on Ratchet's shoulder.
Yeah the original tracks have some vinyl grit to them which I emphasized a little here
@@xotlagames i love it. Seriously dude, you gotta hook me up. Heck I'll even put it on a cd for you.

Hearing Kerwan Metropolis instantly made me 8 years old again :(
This soundtrack has some of the best drum breaks that I've heard in my life.
Great job! A very nostalgic soundtrack for me given that R&C was the first video game I ever played! 22 years of gaming and so much has changed but not always for the better. The PS2 classic series like Ratchet &Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper will always be very special games in my book 😀
