One of the quirks of the gtr was that it was a relatively affordable car that could hang with the big boys...but at this price, you might as well buy a used McLaren or Porsche or some other premium car & have a better experience

I think Henry only managed to tell half the story here. We all know the GTR is old and we all know it hasn’t aged well, but it’s the WHY that’s most crucial to the story. When it was launched in 2008 (US) it took the world by storm because of the numbers it generated: Nurburgring Lap Time, 0-60, 1/4 mile etc...but in generating those numbers it sacrificed driver involvement. In 2009, no one seemed to care because the headline figures were just so mind boggling. Now in 2019 the numbers this Nismo generates no longer impresses and cars costing 3x less outperform it. Its lost the one thing that made it special - speed. The 997.2 Porsche GT3 came out a year later than the GTR but has aged extremely well because it did more than just go fast - it involved the driver with a manual transmission, hydraulic steering, naturally aspirated engine and an insane soundtrack. It’s still loved by the world because driver involvement is now a rare commodity, crazy numbers are not. Moral of the story, never buy a car just because it’s fast. What’s fast today may be slow tomorrow. This Nismo may be more involving than previous GTRs, but for the same money, who in their right mind would choose it over a GT3 Touring?
It's a great car still. The GTR was originally a budget supercar that cost less than other supercars, but had equal or better performance. This special edition is overpriced.
Awesome car, but it has been rendered moot with the reveal of the C8....and the Z06 on the horizon. Hopefully these car prices will be put in check. Prices have gotten out of control in this segment. Great video and commentary.
Just bought a '24 GTR and I think the last words you said in this video still ring true today. There's truly nothing like it and I don't think, with the way cars are going today, there ever will be another car like it again.

Idc how people have been saying it's too old, too expensive, I still think this car is amazing for what it is. The performance is still amazing to this day. That engine is still a gem making 600 HP, and just the analogue feeling it gives. There aren't that many cars that give you that raw feeling in this modern era.
Really appreciate that digital vs analog bit you mention at the end. Really sums up a lot of stuff that requires truly tactile responses for the best experience!

But what would you rather use to pick up kids and groceries? The appeal of the GT-R is it's basically what you would get tuning a normal sedan to perform like a Ferrari, it's the best balance of everyday convenience and bleeding edge speed that any manufacturer has ever produced. The real test is trying to live out of your weekend track toy.
@@budthecyborg4575 The backseat in a GT-R isn't anymore spacious than the one in a 911. You can barely fit a kid back there comfortably and that's about it. Those two cars have a very different philosophy of going fast. But at the end of the day the Nismo is faster in real world. Its real competitor would be the 911 turbo models.

Yes, it is rediculously pricey, and yes, it is still a great car. Pricey as it might be now, I dare to say that R35 is no less, if not more significant than any Skyline GT-R. Plus, let's not forget what the other two have been doing in recent years, R35 is still the best super car slayer from Japan isn't it?
The whole appeal of the R35 GT-R is value for money. You get a real supercar-beating performance at a fraction of the price. But with this new Nismo, I would be more than happy to spend it on a new 991.2 GT3 RS. Heck, even a used 991.1 or 991.2 GT3 would do nicely.
You can buy almost 3 C8 corvettes for the price of one Nismo GTR. Anyone with common sense is going C8. Hell the ZR1 C8 will probably be 100k less than the GTR and will beat it in every aspect of being a car
Joseph Lamonica the newer the car, the uglier they get. Trust me C8 Corvette is good for price but ugly as hell. GT-R's aren't all about looks but honestly this one or the 2017+ Nismo, are the best looking GT-R.
A.W A looks are a matter of opinion and most people agree the C8 is great looking. Not to mention the fact that it’s just simply a better car. (More luxurious, less expensive, more performance, better technology etc)
The thing is though, it seems overpriced compared to the standard car, but that just shows what good value the standard car is. The Nismo holds its own easily among similarly priced cars.
David I don’t think the standard car is even a good price considering how dated it is now. There are many more modern cars with better value and the C8 stingray is just around the corner.
Joel Schembri 600LT is also $100k more as is Huracan Performante. AMG GTR and GT3RS are similar price enough and nicer interiors with better brands. So ya :)
colin hawks me too, but the nissan will have smaller panelgaps, the windows will close properly, you won't have electronics problems and will be more reliable :)
I've owned 3 R35's. '10, '15, '18. Yes, the price jumped substantially. But, what people forget are maintenance costs. Even if my GTR's were a little, very little, behind in terms of performance numbers, I enjoyed them without the worry of a gargantuan maintenance bill. Even when I had my '15 increased to 610whp.
I don’t think Nissan has regained the amount of money they spent on developing the R35. It would explain why they haven’t built a new one or any sports car for matter. RIP GTR and Z

That is not a standard GT-R. It is a special version. Japanese car manufacturers are notorious for releasing very expensive special cars. It does not mean it is the fast or more hardcore just special.
You all say, for the same price, the GT3RS "Will" humiliate the GT-R on track but, The question is are "you" going to be able to do the same?! Some cars and harder to drive than others. You might lap the Nordschleife better in a GT-R than in a GT3RS. Not everyone is a trained race car driver who has been driving GT3RS race cars for a living... and the same vice versa. The GTR is built on being able to drive *(Not everyone is a trained driver - that's why it weighs so much. The weight isn't a mistake but rather the creator himself wanted it that way because weight aids in handling. and the 4WD Chassis is built in ways to allow the drivetrain to juggle torque around like theirs a super computer on board)* So no question about it, everyone in this comments section who isn't an experienced race car driver will do a better time at the Nordschleife in the GT-R Nismo than they will ever dream to in the GT3RS. (Though not tried and tested, i'm pretty sure that's a fact) Here, the current model year GT-R Nismo is around AU$379K Excl. Govt. The current MY GT-R Nismo with all its improvements, add the N Attack Package to match the current MY GT3RS price with the Weissach Package and it's optional magnessium alloy wheels. These cars would be fun to watch battle for laptimes around the Nordschleife behind some of the brilliant racing drivers in the world. *With cars like these, most of their parts are exclusive from different manufactures so chances are the profits aren't that much even after a price jump.* *Even from the N Attack Package as well which i'm pretty sure parts have to be ordered otherwise Nissan would lose a lot of money from Mass Production.* Everybody questions the price of the Nismo N Attack Package but nobody questions the Weissach Package... Would be interesting to see a brand new 2019 Nismo Vs a second hand 2012 standard edition. £35K vs £180K with the same engine. You can stick a 600bhp tune on there for 500 quid for good measures. Sadly for 180K I'd go for a GT3 RS, AMG GTR or a second hand Aventador. Each to their own though.
Anton Polishko Not sure where you live, but in the UK there are about 10 Aventadors for sale at £185k or less on Autotrader... Lamborghinis really don’t hold their value well at all.
How would the automatic mode be of any use in learning a new track? You would want to learn the different gears for each corner as quickly as possible (assuming you actually want to learn the track), so if anything, that mode sounds counterproductive (at least in this example).
I remember building a NISMO on the Nissan webpage and pricing it at around $120K back in 2010/2011. I'm not understanding the justification for the NISMO doubling it's price point to $210K Thank God for the 2020 Stingray!
That price is about right for luxury cars. A top AMG back in the mid noughties would cost about $50,000 today you are looking at in excess of $100,000. Porsche now sell naturally aspirated cars for about $200,000 it is rumored that the GT3 is going turbo as well.
So 10 years ago or so everyone was bitching that the car is too easy to drive and it's like a video game. Fwd to 2017-2019 and the car is being described as more traditional and engaging because everyone else has either caught up or overtaken it in the performance sense and are now like video games. What this reveals to me is how much of a hater many people are/were. They do NOT offer such criticisms for the BIG NAME/BADGES but but were quick to put down the little Nissan because it wasn't an European name plate. Where are the people that should now being saying it's old school, raw, more engaging and blah blah?? Yes. 11:25 "but the more old-school mechanical elements of the GTR perhaps ironically make it feel less digital than ever, and therefore more involving than many more modern offerings"
I still remember the days everyone complaints about it is more like the computer, not the driver, driving the GTR. Then here we are today, calling the GTR one of the more mechanical and involving sports car left out there. Things move on really fast.
"There's still nothing quite like it."
This is exactly why we should still respect and appreciate this car. Even if the rest have caught up to, and increasingly edged ahead of it, it's still a unique package and mix of behaviors/idiosyncrasies. No shared platform or engine, nothing generic; it does things its own way, even now.
Started out as a 70k car.....dealerships added 40k. Now Nissan is just going with it.
Yep. Pretty much
@Brad Viviviyal when they first came out it was a problem
That car is not a standard GT-R. It is a special version and is not for everybody. Personally I do not like the idea of the GT-R and would prefer a natural V8 for the noise and fun.
Man, the upcoming mid-engine Corvette C8 makes any sports & super car I've liked seem not worthy of their often $130000-$150000 starting price tags.
Yup that plastic car is so reliable lmao.
Oh boi..im 110% sure you're fanboing right now. It's always like that when a new car comes and you like it so much that every other cars seems like not worth it. I've been there and i know how wrong i was with my previous choices. Gt-R is a solid machine. American cars aren't.
For me, Its worth & value comes down to what you get for the price you pay. & the Corvette C8 has a very intriguing value for a V8 mid-engine mounted super car. I myself like the Mustang GT350, but if I am to pay more than the price of a GT350, the only American car that I'd like to get is C8 Corvette & before C8 I wasn't a fan of Corvettes.
@@bojidarmartinov5949 yeah but for 70k max you get a very capable super car. It definitely won't be very reliable, most likely be made like a Lego car but it's still a very compelling package. Amazing that when this car launched many criticised it for being too "PlayStation" and now it's the analogue alternative!
This non-special edition is the same price as the cars it has the same performance as, so it's not overpriced. The standard car is under-priced.
Unreal production Carfection! World class presentation Henry! Amazing car shame about the price (not that I can afford one!).

Rather drive a Porsche 911 turbo s or GT2RS
At the same price as the Turbo S, this car has no legs.
Its real competitor would be the 911 turbo models.

cardude1992 I don’t care about which one is faster I’m not trying to win any races, I’m not paying 200k for a Nissan when I can get one of the most iconic cars for the same money.
I’m glad they’re still making it. The car feels much closer to its roots than the Supra does to its. Even though we never got the R32/R33/R34 new in the US I’m happy we got this because I can always get a used one someday and these will still be kicking around in 20-25 years
Yes, it is rediculously pricey, and yes, it is still a great car. Pricey as it might be now, I dare to say that R35 is no less, if not more significant than any Skyline GT-R.
Plus, let's not forget what the other two have been doing in recent years, R35 is still the best super car slayer from Japan isn't it?
At 200k it's the same price as the super cars
GT-R does not need to slow down at corners so there you have it, makes it looks so quick around corners, good handling beast really...🔥🔥🔥
The GTR is my dream car but even I can't justify this price
Awesome video! Loved the camera work in the woods scenes
A 992 GT3 is a far better car for cheaper price than the GTR itself
As always, you’ve outdone yourselves, Carfection.
I agree for the C8. No point for paying 200k for a 2020 gtr when you're going to modify it and maybe even wrap it.
Joseph LaMonica what was the c8 laptime at the nurburgring again? 🤔
Joseph LaMonica Your comparing a car that’s been proven over a decade to a car that hasn’t come out yet and a company that has a poor port folio.

Really like how they stopped playing musics the moment Henry entered the track. Small details.
Way overpriced.
Evan Mulcahy both of those are $100k more than the GTR Nismo at base. With options add $50k-$100k on top of that.
Joel Schembri 600LT is also $100k more as is Huracan Performante. AMG GTR and GT3RS are similar price enough and nicer interiors with better brands. So ya :)

You all say, for the same price, the GT3RS "Will" humiliate the GT-R on track but,
The question is are "you" going to be able to do the same?!
The weight isn't a mistake but rather the creator himself wanted it that way because weight aids in handling. and the 4WD Chassis is built in ways to allow the drivetrain to juggle torque around like theirs a super computer on board)*
So no question about it, everyone in this comments section who isn't an experienced race car driver will do a better time at the Nordschleife in the GT-R Nismo than they will ever dream to in the GT3RS. (Though not tried and tested, i'm pretty sure that's a fact)
Here, the current model year GT-R Nismo is around AU$379K Excl. Govt. Charges (And there's really only 1 model as far as options are in question) whereas the GT3RS is around AU$450K
Excl. Govt. Charges (Before going into things like Weissach package which can get up to as much as AU$34K before considering the Magnessium wheel option of that package.)
*With cars like these, most of their parts are exclusive from different manufactures so chances are the profits aren't that much even after a price jump.*
*Even from the N Attack Package as well which i'm pretty sure parts have to be ordered otherwise Nissan would lose a lot of money from Mass Production.*
Everybody questions the price of the Nismo N Attack Package but nobody questions the Weissach Package... I guess AU$34+K is excusable cause Porsche is an exotic big name
