      I have an Australian Shepard/ Cattle dog mix. He is 3.5 months old and enjoys herding me, to the point, he's drawn blood. Yesterday, he bit me so hard, I lost my mind. I yelled, stomped, slammed a cabinet door and a few other things. I'm not proud of myself for getting so angry, but I have a bad ankle and he hit the wrong spot. I have tried throwing toys, treats, try to get him to follow a command and at that point nothing was working. I have never given up on a dog, but with him, I just don't know what to do. We have him in training, yet it feels like, when we get home, he becomes a little snot again.

    Don't get me wrong. I'm still a huge fan of Zak; but I just want to say that I really enjoy seeing Zak and Bree "discussing" issues on camera. I know the "discussions" are scripted; but it's entertaining to me and they're so cute together. Bree is great on camera. Both of you are. I really do feel like you could have your own show on Animal Planet. Better yet, since it seems every network requires a subscription these days, maybe Amazon Prime or Netflix. I've been thinking that maybe you could have a series in which Zak is training a person to train a dog; and it kinda looks like that's where you're headed with Bree. She probably already knows; but it's a good story and good examples.

    This was a really great video as Zak took a back seat n let Brie take on a leading role.
    Seeing Zak work with dogs makes everything look simple n easy n that’s how the audience wud imagine training to be which is not the case.
    And by having Brie take the lead, ( who is not as experienced compared to Zak ), really highlights the challenges that would be faced by most of us ( Not saying Brie is at our/my level, she certainly is ahead of us/me for many obvious reasons ).
    Kudos to all of you for all the videos, but specially this episode 👍🏼👍🏼

    Thanks to all of you :) for the great discussion and plenty of real demos and tips and realistic photo shots of puppy behaviour. Your channel is unofficially recommended by a dog trainer/walker who works at a vet recommended dog school in my city. This is where we intend to start for the live action with other dogs etc. It's work/play time a couple of times a day at our house and now it's not going to be something we just have to endure. Your approach takes a panic/bad feeling of not knowing how to communicate to my puppy and replace it with training and seeing the positive results is MY reward ;)

    Great comments on the growling. With my last dog I was actually able to train and UTILIZE his growl AS a form of communication between us. With very careful and precise markers and the proper follow though and after a couple years, here's what I had. If I was accidentally doing something that was causing him physical discomfort (eg. if I caught some fur in a harness or seatbelt)...he would look at me with very soft eyes and let out a small growl and possibly rest his teeth gently on me....no aggression simply communication. He was an amazing dog.

    My boy is six months old, in all the time I’ve had him I’ve only heard him growl maybe three times. He doesn’t have aggression issues or resource guarding problems but it still was surprising just because I don’t really ever hear it.
    I never get upset when he growls, I acknowledge why he is growling as it’s usually a fear or unsureness response and find ways to introduce/desensitize him to the stressor. Growling is just a form of feedback that can help us learn how to work with our dogs to make them comfortable.

    I just LOVE that they're sharing with us how they're trying to think through the communication approach together instead of just saying: you're doing it wrong here's how to do it.
    People need to realize that trainers put in the work to try different things and that each dog really is different however cliche that sounds. But also that every day is different and people have different approaches and need to be humble and not assume that they'll get it right immediately.
    Sorry for the incoherent rambling. Bottom line is: great video.

    So really, Biscuits has been a great opportunity to show people what happens when you get a resource guarding pup! Poor little mite as you say, must have had to fight for everything with all those bigger stronger puppies. Truth be told, in my opinion the rescue didn't really do a good job in that regard and should have realised that she was too small to hold her own with all those bigger pups. Inertia has been doing a great job of being a Nanny and showing Biscuits how "its done" so to speak.
    I've got an older giant breed girl called Juno who loves small dogs. It was fascinating when she was younger to watch her adapt her play style to play with small dogs. I boarded dogs in my home, so from 10 weeks, she met a huge number of dogs, bigger and smaller than her. Friends' giant breeds taught her how to be a "big dog" and boarders who were teensy taught her how to play with them. She learned very quickly that she had to dial it back. She would start off with her usual bouncy stuff and then when the small dog said "nope, not engaging with that rough stuff!" she would change her style and lay down while they climbed all over her. She was a big hit with the littles!
    I always impress upon my class students and clients that they must never punish a growl and must always listen to what their dog is saying. You are right of course, that small dogs often have their needs ignored simply because they are small. I have never figured out why people do that; they have the same emotions and needs as larger dogs but somehow they aren't taken seriously. I've got quite a few clients with small dogs they describe are "acting up" but at the end of the day, when you are 10 inches tall, the world is a scary place and full of giants and if you are yelling "help me please!" and nobody is listening then for sure, you are going to try to get attention by acting out and get your needs met.

    I'm so thankful that you addressed growling. My heeler mix is a growler, to let people know that she is uncomfortable. When my vet talked to us about her growling it really was an a-ha moment. I had intrepted it as aggression. We don't reinforce her growling at all. It has worked for us to remove her, distract her, anything to get her from her fear trigger. Any other ideas?

    Whenever we got our dog, she was just 2 months old, and didn’t have any problems with other dogs. Until we took her to a friends house, where she was attacked my their dog. Now freaks out at other dogs. Is this due to fear, & being traumatized?? & is there a way we can fix this?? Also, she met my uncle’s dog before she was attacked, & she’s completely fine with her. So that’s why we think that her fear/aggression started from the attack.

    So this is what my dog learned when I practiced this method: If I guard an item sooner or later my human is going to offer me something even more valuable. If I guard more often and stronger (not only getting stiff and growling but also snapping) I will get more and more!! Let's do this!
    My dog is a streetdog and he's pretty intelligent. I just want to point out that this method has some severe potential to not make anything better but worse. I'm not saying the dog does this to trick me or to fool me, he's just an opportunist. And freaking clever. I personally secure my dog with a muzzle in advance and take the item he guards. He's just starting to not be successful with his behaviour. I'm not screaming at him or anything. I'm just calm and taking the item. That's what worked for us. And no. He didn't start to become more aggressive because "oh she's taking all my stuff and I have to guard even more!" because I don't take all his stuff. Even though he is still guarding I'm confident and calm enough to not make a serious conflict out of every guarding situation.
    Please be careful with the method that is shown here! I'm not saying it's wrong it's just not always that easy especially not with clever dogs.

    My small dog gets very defensive of things she picks up on the beach or at the park (chicken bones, dead fish etc). I watch her like a hawk, but she can sniff out the bad stuff so fast I can’t always get her away from it in time. It’s starting to suck the joy out of taking her for walks. How do you deal with getting something potentially dangerous off a dog who’s guarding it, when nothing you have is high enough value to trade?

    The first time I bathed my little dog ( puppy, part Chihuahua ~ when I got him at 10 weeks ) in the tub I put a big shallow round plastic wash basin in it. I filled the wash basin half way with warm water and trickled the faucet. I put little plastic kids floating green froggies into the basin. I then put the pup into the tub singing the Bumblebee song. ( I used to be a preschool teacher). The frogs floating in the basin really interested him. Next thing I knew he was jumping in the basin for a few seconds and then back out into the tub. He kept doing this until he was almost all wet. Eventually he was grabbing the frogs and jumping around in the water, having a good old time. I then soaped him just a little bit with fragrance free hypoallergenic puppy shampoo from the neck down and turned the water up a little bit. He loved that and started drinking from the stream of water getting his head wet. I had to make sure he didn’t drown himself. He eventually regulated himself. I then turned it up more and began rinsing him off with a cup. He ran around a bit in the tub, but didn’t really mind it much ( since he was already soaked). He jumped back in and out the basin with the frogs on and off while I was rinsing him. I then got a towel and called him to the edge of the tub and rubbed his little face with it and then wrapped him in it rubbing him vigorously. He just grunted and surely seemed very happy. He now absolutely loves a bath. For him it’s a play session and special time I give to him. It’s so cute. This little guy even cries to get in with me sometimes when I take a shower. I just tell him “wait” and he will lay down in the bathroom knowing I’ll get him a “ tubby” ready soon. Since he’s bathed so often I only use a teeny bit of shampoo and luke warm water. He’s most always clean an shiny.

    So.... we should resist the urge to overpower and teach instead. Treat the grumbling as communication and an indication of discomfort. Sometimes I wonder what how much nicer of a world we would be living in if we applied your dog and puppy training principles to raising children and treatment of people in general. Thnx again.

    Thanks to Zack’s helpful tips. I hope you can help my reversed situation. April is a 11 years old female small dog , 11 pounds. Her only experience with other dog was with OJ. OJ passed away and I adopted another Summer, Summer is a male 7 month puppy 25 pounds who loves to play . he smell at April a lot and exciting to play, but April doesn’t want to play, bark and showed anger. Summer had basic obedient cross but he ignored instructions at the moment , instead he starts to bark and showed his teeth, acted like attacking, it always leading to uncontrollable mess. how can I train Summer to back out when April do not want to play?

    Hey Zak and Bree! I need to work on leash manners with my 1 y/o border collie. He is VERY receptive to toys, but not treats. Could you guys make a video on how to train leash manners using toys? I'm not necessarily sure I get the picture on how that works. He knows many commands, but if you give him an inch on the leash he will take a mile, and I recently had back surgery so I need this figured out haha! Thanks!!

    Love your videos. My Australian Shepard/Catahoula mix has resource guarding issues just with other dogs, not humans. She will growl to warn and has attacked my other dog just for coming near a closed bag of dog food. How do you fix that? Is this in your second book? I have both of your books in cart on Amazon. I need to fix it before my new puppy comes home in March.

    Zak, playing tug of war with Biscuit, does that make a dog that tends to nip and bite become more aggressive? Thanks.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 2 года назад

      That's one of the myths about tug of war. When played correctly, tug of war does not make a dog nippier or more likely to bite and become aggressive. Here's a real short primer on how to play tug of war: www.clickertraining.com/node/3620

    Thanks so much for your videos. I'm wondering if you can give suggestions on training an 8-week old standard goldendoodle puppy with regards to our two older dogs (13 year old cockapoo and 9 year old cavapoo, weighing 11# and 13#). The puppy is bigger than they are and she really wants to play with them, but there's a LOT of snarking/growling going on and I don't want any of them to get hurt. The 9-year old is now very skittish of the puppy and runs away with her tail tucked. The 13-year old is attempting to defend herself, but the puppy is very bold and used to playing rough with her littermates. We've only had the puppy home for a week. What do you suggest?

    We have a new puppy and I was wondering if this was reversed and Inertia was the one growling/snapping when the puppy took something from her, would you correct that? I’m finding it tough to identify what’s an appropriate correction from my older dog vs possessive behaviour. He’s not possessive with food or toys towards us, only the puppy 🤔

    • @veritystothard1664
      @veritystothard1664 2 года назад +1

      Puppy is 14wks old so we’re still working on manners and sharing. Our older dog is wonderful and has been teaching him a lot, so I trust he won’t over correct or hurt the puppy, I’m just unsure where the line is between puppy correction and resource guarding / possessiveness

    So cute when Biscuits is running around with her favorite toy . Actually growling is sometimes even just a noise for dogs . Some growl while playing , for example tug . Then it isn't meant serious at some dogs , just to "spice up" the game . While Biscuits .....well she snaps like a crocodile . You might change her name to "Ginger" . ( "Does she bite ? "- "No , Ginger snaps ." )

      True. My Rottweiler growled when he had the football in his mouth and when you tried to get it. No teeth were shown but if you didn't know any better you'd mistake it for aggression but he loved it and always brought the ball back for more

    How do I stop my dog from body guarding. He went to a groomer I had used before and now he won’t let us brush him or get groomed. He jumps or snaps if we touch him. We now have to get him sedated to get a groom. I don’t know what to do.

    What if the problem isn't resource guarding? My 6 mo old JackChi gets grouchy -- maybe when tired? When he gets up from a nap he plays, wants pets, I can rough around and touch him anywhere. When it's probably time for a nap he'll growl and/or snap if I touch him wrong (like his tail, or sometimes even his head). Last night he laid down on the bed and looked so cute so I gave him a gentle head rub and he growled and bared his teeth. I have his sister from a previous litter and she was never like that. Could it be because he's male? Going through puberty? Is it just a phase, or do I need to find a way to show him that's "not okay"? Not sure how to do it, this is the closest info I found so far. TIA!
