Running a run-flat tyre without air for any distance damages the tyre (this is why there is a 50 mile limit), so he would have had to replace it anyway, even if he had just let the air out of the valve. Besides which, actually puncturing the tyre is a more realistic test as the tyre is not just flat but physically compromised as well. Nice job and very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I have f30 and I have run flat. I live in New Mexico where even gas stations are 100 miles apart. I ran on a flat tire (about 13 psi) for 120 miles at 65 mph and made it to the shop. It was a rear-right tire, but still impressive.

Thx for the video! I was seriously thinking of getting reg. tires instead of my R.F on my X5d thats why I searched for pro/cons of rf. Being a single mom with a 2 & 4 yr old and a small dog. I'm now convinced my R.F are more convenient, safer with peace of mind in my situation vs. a smoother ride with less shock. I rather spend the extra cash instead of trying to change a tire with 2 scared kiddos and a barking dog. Again thanks

get a tripple aaa it is i think 30 dolars for the whole year ..this run flat tires cost a fortune anyway once you have a whole or a screw on it eventhough you are able to drive for some miles when you end up at the dealer or shop you have to purchase a new tire another 300 dollars for every single nail on your tire . with a regular tire it is like 30 dollars to refair a flat tire and if you are a member of costco or sams club they do it for free , you do the math ..

So funny you didn't just let the air out!! I've got a '13 5 series . The RF was really great when I wasn't expecting a flat. The indicator does come on as soon as it loses the required amount of air. The only issue I have with BMW is that it doesn't show the amount of pressure on each tire on the monitor, it only highlights which tire is low. I took mine to a repair shop and they patched it. Luckily it wasn't in the sidewall...They said that most people say you shouldn't but the tire shop said you can but you should only let a professional do it. Mine has been running with a patch for over 20,000 miles now. Thanks for the videos!!

    • @KiesMotorsports
      @KiesMotorsports  8 лет назад +1

Hi, thanks for your comment. I believe if you have Nav that it displays the pressure (which I think they all should), but it may require coding. I believe you can even see each tire's temperature, but again, it may need coding. That's great you were able to patch it! My personal feeling is that they don't want you patching it, because they don't know how far you drove on it flat, which would weaken the sidewalls. Try at your own risk, but if it was me and I just got the flat.. I'd try to fix it as you did, as long as it wasn't in the sidewall. Thanks again

Had one one of these tires explode last summer while going around 120 km/h. Most likely a nail/screw puncture after which the object erupted outward. No noticeable loss of control in perfect summer conditions even though all pressure was lost immediately.
Dropped speed to 80 km/h and drove to closest gas station. At closer inspection there was a proper hole with the diameter of a pencil. Tire off and fixed it with one of those sticky plugs and gave it some air. All perfect and got back home. The plug held perfectly until I got the tire properly fixed.
The tire will heat up like a mofo!

    1. Run-flat tyres should only be mounted to rims that are designed to take them.
    2. run flat tyres are un repairable.
3.most run flat damage is only visble on the inside of the tyre.
    4. run flat tyres are a lot heavier than normal tyres
    5. run flat tyres give a harder ride and do not absorb most bumps.
    6. runflat tyres are a lot more money than standard tyres.
they are also an ass to fit to the rim.

It all depends on where the hole is in the tire. If the hole is on the side of the tire wall (not underneath) those expensive run flats are useless + some tire shops may not have run flat replacements.

It may be worth noting other run-flat tires may not match the flat-tire performance of this particular tire. I had a much worse experience with another brand of Run-flats that came on my 2018 BMW. It was worthless with no air. I had a small (actually small) screw in the RF tire overnight near the middle of the tread. Tire pressure notice came on when I headed out in the morning, but I thought it was from a recent temperature drop. I only went 2 blocks before deciding something was terribly wrong. The wheel was bouncing as if it were bent and the steering was no better than the steering with a flat conventional tire. Retuned home and filled the tire with air. Since I left the screw in, I made it to a shop before the pressure dropped very far. The "bouncing" was from the Tire Pressure Monitor being crushed every time the wheel rotated to the filler stem position. It was destroyed. The good news is that I did not drive very far in the flat condition and the tire was able to be plugged. Overall, it performed almost identically to a conventional flat tire (not drivable for any distance) except that it did protect the rim. I found your video by searching for what brand of run flat actually works and there is a good chance I'll buy the ones you tested. It's very hard to find other similar testing.

I am driving a 2012 BMW 500 series, 39k miles on it. While driving the other day, I heard something pop, got an alert on my dashboard that the air on the rear right tire is low. I drove for another 5 miles to Belle Tire, unfortunately they are unable to help me!! I found a tow truck driver who helped me take my car to the BMW dealership. That is when I knew I had a run on flat tire, one of the reasons why a spare tire is not provided. Good to know I have it!!

Every year I have a flat on my 2013 X1 , after 5 or 10 miles running on the runflat at maybe 15psi, I was able to drive safe home and fix the tire with a regular tire plug kit at 10$ (you can fix 5 flat at that cost). The tires were replaced after 6 years and 45000 miles on them. So you can clearly have runflat and fix a flat as long as you dont drive to long on them and that the puncture is not located of the sidewall of on the edge of the tire like any other regular tire

  • @azpitbull

Im not for sure if I will buy the run flat tires. I just bought a 2005 645 Ci and the car does not come with a spare or even so much as a compartment for the spare -no room for even a donut. I also understand that if you try and use a can of fix-a-flat, it will ruin the tire pressure sensors. So I have to make a choice; buy the ROF's which are heavier, less performance cornering, do not last as long as a radials, harder riding, and more costly. Or, buy all regular tires, buy a small donut spare, and take up what little space I have in my trunk. Right now I am afraid to take a long road trip. So I appreciate anyone's recommendation! BMW made a bad decision not to provide a spare. Nice video BTW....

I have an M5, woke up a couple months back about 30 miles from home. I tried to drive about 3 miles to see how it was doing, and it was shredding the tire and very hot. Wondering if the tire was a bit on the worn side, but I thought I remembered it still having some good tread left. Makes me nervous. The low tire indicator did come on immediately as well.

Good video. I don't think BMW did their homework on how far the distances are in the western half of the United States or I guess they figure you'll buy the X5 and have room to stow a fullsize wheel and tire, I don't know. Regardless, you need to be able to self-rescue in a lot of places in the US because the tire shops won't have the Continental run flats that match the car, or they will want to sell you 2 or 4 tires, etc. The muffler on the F30 is huge and takes up what would have been the rest of the area for the spare to fit. The BMW cars with electrics like the 330e take up all that space, which is why the engineers had to ditch the spare so bad (and cost savings). Granted, I have gotten maybe a half dozen flats in 27 years of driving, but I still like having a spare tire. It's old-fashioned to be self-sufficient.

I think you should have a spare tire just incase. You would be able to get off the highway safely with a runflat to change out/repair the tire, but it's by no means a replacement for a spare tire. Also if you have a tire repair kit you can just do that as well.

The explanation for why use and why buy a run flat tire is those tires are the best
You don’t need a spare tire or any car jack you get a Neil in the tire you can continue driving on the road until you get to your favorite tire shop and get it fix it or replace it simple as that
Obviously this technology cost more that’s is normal

First, Good video gratz BUT, runflats are not that great they are like regulars can be fixed with right equipment yet if you keep driving with them beside the outer important part you wear the inner selant of the tyre.Means less lifespan of a wheel and irregular wear.I am not saying its not useful but its more expensive lot more harder to maintain and carrying a sapre wont kill you in my opinion :)

So did you buy new tires after the nail… or you had someone patch on it or repair it?

Nice video, was debating to change from run flats to regular tyres. Think I will stick with run flats after watching your video, can you do a video using a "large nail?".... 🏅🏅. Haha .. keep up the great videos.

The manufacturer says that these tires are for cars with tire pressure check. That's a pity, that you didn't show other not damaged tires for visual comparison, so we can look for a difference between them. I don't have a pressure check, but I really love the idea of run flat, but I am worried that I will miss the moment of that 50 miles. I make 150-200 miles at night, and please tell me, who checks his tires every single night?

I have a 2014 CTS with run flats...which is just what I did when the front right one went flat 5 miles from town. I only drove on it for about 8 miles total and the tire shop said "once you drive on them they have to be replaced because they get tore up on the interior edge". I have AWD, they have to replace ALL four. $1400.00 because I chose to drive on a run flat for a short distance. No good.

On my 2014 X50i there was a pronounced pull to right immediately when I hit a pothole that blew out the sidewall near the bead where it was the weakest. Not a useful feature.

Just bought a Mercedes. Has run flat tires. Bought the Mercedes tire/rim warranty for 6 years. Anytime the tire gets flat, nail it ect, they will put a new one on. You cannot patch or repair run flats. So....we decided to get the warranty

GoPro Goalie Uzi that’s not true. They suggest not to patch run flats but yes you can patch a run flat. Trust me, I’ve had mine patched a few times. Honestly, they just tell you that you can’t patch those types of tires for one reason and one reason only.... moneyyy 💴 💰

Run Flats are more heavy then normal tiers , lower grip , bad grip on wet , annoying comfort and in time they are worse and worse!!!
Performance cars like M5 don't use run flats ... Why!?

These tires suck if you live in a country where pot-holes and speed-breakers are common and they cost more as well. Also how come after you deflated the tire there was no warning from the iDrive system for air pressure loss?

Just don't get a flat in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday! I'm running the oem pirelli P7 run flats and they're awesome. The ride is definitely rougher than normal though and it does concern me that if you do get a flat you're basically up for a new tyre. Here in Australia a P7 run flat is $360!!
