Air filters are always great to replace, and new oil definitely helps with peace of mind, but our favorite HAS to be the first rain storm you drive into with a fresh set of wipers. One of the best feelings!! Thanks for the support Justin, great video!
Hey Justin, thanks for recommending FCP Euro. Just ordered all new brakes (~$400) whereas the dealer wants $1680. Looking forward to getting back into the garage and that sweet feeling of doing the job. Update: brake job was easy & fun. Thanks again!
I had the dealer tell me a similar price for brakes on my 325I. I did all 4, new rotors and pads for like $300 I believe, about $1300 less than they wanted and it was super easy. They have a lift, air guns etc and it would be so easy for them, probably an hour max. Not sure why they rip people off with that one, but that's a huge rip off service.
I gotta say on camera the fitment of them wheels is 100% on point. I've never seen an f30 with a wheel and tire combo that is so perfect. Wish I could see it in person. Color combo so good
I drive an E82 in Germany where gas prices, zoll emissions fees, & all taxes... are crazy. Even 5 liters of motor oil is 20 more than in the US. The Dealership quoted me 200EUROS for oil change! So I happily do em myself for 50. Bought my BMW private & put 5000 in upgrades into it. (wheels tires suspension etc.) Dealership never got a penny & never will!!
@@Xylti that correct. When i bought my beemer i had the dealer quote me a similar figure for just pads-no rotors etc. He had the wrong guy. I was just trying to get a feel for costs. I later installed Akebono on front and rear including new sensors for about $200 in parts. DIY oil changes w BMW oil is roughly $70. I change mine 2x annually. Easy job
Just one thing, when you pull the wipers forward be very careful leaving them there while you grab the replacement wiper. If the arm snaps back it’ll definitely crack your windshield if there isn’t a wiper blade installed. I’ve seen it happen many times
Hi Justin. Great video, just one note on the oil viscosity: engines with start-stop, modern turbos and modern engines in general go with thinner oil: reduce engine wear during start-stop cycles (cold starts induce most engine wear, the thinner oil helps), there’s a claim that the thinner oil helps the turbo cool (I did not investigate on this), the thinner oil also helps and provides better lubrication. Certified OEM oils of grade 0w20 also have a lot of additives that specifically help the modern engine in all the statements I’ve said above. I’ve discussed this at my local dealership when I had to do the car’s first oil change. There’s more to that oil than the viscosity grade. I’d recommend switching back to the 0w20 or at lest conduct more study on the matter.
0W20 oil is a VERY thin oil. It was introduced to reduce emissions and make fuel economy better since this less viscous fluid has less internal friction than a higher viscosity oil like a 5W30. Start-Stop is bad, you should program it to be not active anymore. Turbochargers are now around for 20-30 years in car engines. They have worked with 10W60, 5W50, 0W30 and will work with 0W20, but 0W20 wont really "cool" the turbo better than other, thicker oils. It will be on the same level in my opinion. Cold-starts: yes, thick oil, like a 10W or a 15W is quite thick and wont flow as good as a 0W or a 5W oil, but there is no need to have a 0W oil if it only gets like max -10°C in winter. A 5W will do the job very good, and even that - there are 0W30 and even 0W40 oils on the market if im correct. But be aware: the higher the gap between the number in front of the W and after the W ther more additives and viscosity enhancers they need to put into the oil because the base-oil they use is very thin. That doesnt make an engine oil bad, but it makes it expensive. If you get REALLY cold temperatures during winter its justified to use 0W oil. If you have mild winters there isnt really need to. "Thinner oil = better lubrication": basically yes, since the internal friction of the oil is very small. But the thickness of the oilfilm will also degrade, which is good for emissions and fuel economy, but not very good if you want to redline the engine often or have high oil-temps. The cussion between static and dynamic object (cylinderwall and piston) will deacrease which CAN be bad - depends on how you drive. I think its a bigger problem on diesels, especially the ones with DPF. There is the chance of diesel mixing with the oil which will lead to the oil grading down to a 0W15 or something like that. In my opionion it is the better idea to use 5W30. If you live in a country with high temps in the summer you can even go to a 5W40. 0W20 is to thin for my personal feel.
@@heavyweight6440 thanks for sharing your detailed input. I’ve had exactly the same rationale regarding oil viscosity until my current car’s 1.4tsi. Winters here go around -15/-20C at their worst, median around -7/-10, while summers go quite hot, 35/40C. My previous car and the one before had naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Being an European, engines here tend to be smaller, so the previous was a 1.6l unit, it used 5W40, for this climate that was perfect. But it had no start/stop, no turbo. My current 1.4tsi only sees the dealer’s service and for the first oil change I’ve had the same thoughts: “0w20 is too thin!”, but the dealer reassured me that it’s not the viscosity as much as the additives in this specific oil grade. I’d still be using the manufacturer’s oil recommendation, regardless of my classic oil know-how. The same was true with organic vs synthetic oils servicing periods. Organic would turn to jam, while synthetic still had half it’s interval. We’ll know if these thinner oils are crap, but on the long run. So far, my engine is working pretty sweet with it, but I rarely need to use the car so it only has about 9k miles (14k km) after 3 years, so I could probably put butter in it and it would still work, with my milage 👨🔧
Change it early and often. 0w20 for regular driving. If u are going to track it or give it a long road trip at high temps and into boost a lot go with an occasional 5 weight 30 it won’t hurt anything. Best thing is use a high quality oil like Liqui Moly! 4500-5k on a boosted engine will keep that turbo and the internals in great condition. Get an oil analysis if u want to stretch more out of it in between changes.
Thank you Justin for this helpful video. I just replaced the engine air filter on my 2017 330 iX which was a breeze. Then I replaced the cabin air filter which was a total PIA. What a horrible design for the location of the cabin air filter. It took me fine times as long to do this than to replace the same filter on our second car a Toyota Highlander. I would not have been able to do the BMW job without these videos though. Thanks again.
“It’s not that hard you just have to know BMW’s way of doing it” basically summarizes every experience I’ve had when doing anything to my f30 lol It started on day 1 when I had to google how to open the damn hood lol
My wife has a F30 328i and I do all of the work on it for her as well. You can't beat FCP Euro's buy back deal they have. It cost me $25 to ship back my oil and filter to them but I get my money back for the price of the oil and filter which is right at $50. So , only costs me $25 to do an oil change with full synthetic!
Consistently great videos dude, love the graphics too showing the screw sizes, truly thoughtful. I still own a e series but might get an f series one day but in still enjoying the insights
Great video Justin. And you are right about the basic maintenance being do-able by almost everyone. I learned to do the basic stuff as soon as the warranty ran out on my old E60 5 series. I also found that other things like serpentine belt / idler wheel replacement were easy enough to manage if you take your time and get a few basic tools. The amount of money saved by DIY an be very significant.
Maintenance Before Mods. Currently going through this with my BMW and oh my goodness, you have no idea how much I want to spend my money on the mods that I want! But we must be patient and logical 👌🏾
Ran across your channel looking for DIY on a BMW as I am looking to buy a used one. Thank you for posting this and actually showing each step in the process. This will help save a lot of money and time.
2:00 Concerning changing the wiper blades: I'd strongly advice to use a sponge or foam and place it onto the windshield, as the wiper arm may flip down breaking the windshield. This happens more often than you think even to professionals and is the main reason for windshield replacements.... However, Great Videos!!!
Saw the video today subscribed for life!!!! Great editing and VERY informative. I purchased a 335i last week so I’ll continue to build my car from learning on your channel!!!!!!! Thank you
Really loved the way you summed up working on BMWs Justin! You start with small stuff and begin working your way up. I've developed a collection of tools from working on my F25 and it's so worth it. BMWs can be very affordable if you do the maintenance yourself and will last a very long time if you treat them right. With the power of forums and software like Carly or ISTA, you can solve pretty much any problem on your vehicle. Even though my car is running fine, I have bookmarked guides for how to replace fluids in the transfer case and differentials so down the line I will already have good knowledge on what needs to be done.
Great video. My one piece of advice on the cabin filter is to not necessarily reinstall it in the same direction it came out -- only because it is often installed in the wrong direction by whomever changed it previously (including the dealer)! I've watched a few videos on how to do this, and the filter that gets pulled out can be in the wrong direction, and the new one is then reinstalled in that same wrong direction. The arrows indicate the direction of airflow through the filter, which on the F30 is towards the FRONT of the car. (You did it correctly in the video.)

Great video! I picked up a 2016 CPO 340ix about a week ago and have a lot to learn. Didn’t realize there was a power outlet down in the passenger footwell.
I've agree with you an f30 it's a good car. Everything is easy to replace. The only one a bit hard was cabin filter because of the location. Plus you got planty of room in the engine bay. Not bad.
Great video. Couple of points - a couple of ramps are more practical (and I would argue safer) for an oil change. Jacking up a BMW and putting it on jackstands is a topic unto itself... Cheers!
As a dealer tech, I agree with most of what you said. Things to look out for. 1.Make sure you leave the wiper arm down between wiper exchanges. The arm will come down with out you holding it and break the windshield. 2.The screws are very easy to over tighten on the micro filter. This will crush the plastic door for the filter box. 3.Air filter isn't bad, BUT if you have an N26. Its easy to break the vacuum line off the air box. 4. You will by a new engine if you mess it up the oil change.
Great Video!!!! 10 year BMW Tech Tip!!!!! I would stick to using the OEM filter. I haven’t really come into this problem with the B58 or B48, mainly n52s up to n55s, but, the green o-ring with the OEM filters are the only ones which DO NOT cause sporadic vanos control faults. There is something about the way none OEM o-rings age that cause them to dry rot. Now that the B series engine has been in the market for some years, we’re starting to see the same issue with the large o-rings built onto the filters. I have yet to have a dry rotted o-ring cause a vanos fault on a B series engine but I have spent my fair share of nervous moments cleaning out bits and pieces of dry rotted plastic from the oil filter housing. Again, great video!!
Hi, I am really enjoying your videos! Good prep before I get my new F30 this weekend :D cant wait ! It would be nice if you could add the song name etc in the description as its nice to listen to haha.

You are correct I found you looking up BMW 328i I ultimately got a Mercedes E350 just because all the BMW I was looking @ were not IMO buyable no service manuals, 1 key, multiple owners you name it just couldn't find one i thought would be reliable but thanks you for your channel 💯🙌 God bless & have a great rest of 2020..🤜
Our dealer switched our X3 M40i from 0W-20 to 0W-30. We live in Canada so I find the 5W-30 a bit thick for really cold winter days. I was skeptical of the 0W-20 and I think it's used mainly to make the CAFE fleet mileage in NA. To avoid making a mess I use a plastic bag and put the filter in right out of the oil filter housing.
Thanks for doing these great videos Justin! These are excellent - you succinctly provide all the necessary information along with all the explanations and proper cautions. Your presentations are easy to understand and follow. Well done!
Hey Justin just one tip. Before you take the oil filter out, tuck some paper towels around it, that way when you pull it out you catch any oil dripping off and hopefully keep your engine bay looking nice longer :)
Driveway or a Garage is also a nice addition to work on cars, for peps like me living in city where housing is real deal expense rather than a apartment is hard to do just on a street 😅
I have an BMW 330i 2018 F30 watched this video did the basic things as by myself. Except the oil change was to much work for me 🤭But rest of the stuff is supper simple. Thanks Justin for this informative video 🙏
Awesome video! It’s worth pointing out that the wiper blades live under the hood line for reduce turbulence. How much? No clue but its incremental. Newer VWs also are this way so I guess its a German thing... congrats on the new car!
Now I watch a ton of DIY BMW videos cuz I'm a new BMW owner in a small town where none of the dealerships here want anything to do with beamers for a spark plug change but one family owned shop wanting to charge almost 400 on my x3. So I did it myself and it was easier than my old dodge ram. Its unbelievable how much one would charge because of the logo.

I've agree with you an f30 it's a good car. Everything is easy to replace. The only one a bit hard was cabin filter because of the location. Plus you got planty of room in the engine bay. Not bad.
im very happy you made this video. I own a F32 and everything looks pretty straightforward. Thanks.
That was crazy how involved the wiper change was! Great vid!
Thanks man!
Great video. Couple of points - a couple of ramps are more practical (and I would argue safer) for an oil change. Jacking up a BMW and putting it on jackstands is a topic unto itself... Cheers!
Love the new f30 content man!! Can’t wait for more 👍🏻
It's also just as important where you purchase your things from. I highly recommend FCP euro for their excellent service and genuine parts.
I agree!
So happy to have found this channel.
Thanks for the tip!
Hi, I am really enjoying your videos! Good prep before I get my new F30 this weekend :D cant wait ! It would be nice if you could add the song name etc in the description as its nice to listen to haha.
i feel like owning a car like this will make me become more invested in learning how to do all these maintenance things.
thanks Justin🎉
Didn’t know you owned one... I drove mine from Miami to Houston (16 hours) .. best ride of my life. Enjoy 🌞
Nice! I actually bought mine in Miami as well and drove it back to Michigan!
I have a 2015 f15 35i and my maintenance plan is almost running out can’t wait to start doing my own oil changes 🙌🏼
This seriously motivated me to learn how do the maintenance. Gotta save them $$$$$ Thanks for the content!!
Great video didn't know about putting the wipers in service mode .
Hey Justin,
I wanted to say that, to me, you seem to have really lifted your content game. Your content before was great, but it seems much more polished now.
Well done mate. Keep up the good work. And thank you.
Thank you for noticing! I’m always trying to improve and level up the quality 😎
Just bought my first bmw 07 335i goona be watching you’re channel so I can do it by myself (never had work on cars before ) 😂😊
Good job Justin, you now made me want to do my own car myself.. I own the BM 3301... I appreciate you sharing this video.
Amazing video ❤️ I’m so proud for how far you’ve come! I subscribed when I had an E90 2 years ago and now that you’ve upgraded to the F30 with me feels like it’s came full circle. Keep up the grind man 💪🙏🏻
Great video Justin!! I'm going to try this. Best wishes from England
Cool! I didn’t know about the wiper blades service mode! Great info!
Glad I could help!
You are correct I found you looking up BMW 328i I ultimately got a Mercedes E350 just because all the BMW I was looking @ were not IMO buyable no service manuals, 1 key, multiple owners you name it just couldn't find one i thought would be reliable but thanks you for your channel 💯🙌 God bless & have a great rest of 2020..🤜
If anyone is around Arlington Texas area the dealership there does forty-nine dollar oil changes. If you go on their website they have a coupon.
Dude, you make sick content! I love it. New BMW owner and consuming a lot of your stuff. Thank you very much for doing such a grat job.
Good lighting in the background
Thanks! I'm always trying to improve the lighting
Just got my first 328XI super excited!
Awesome video. You have a video on the spark plug change?
thx for the tip on the wiper blades!
Great video and good advice for novice car owners.
Damn. After owning my bmw for almost 5 years, I never knew you had to put wipers in service mode haha. I was struggling this whole time smh
Lol I always wondered how they do it 😂
Werd, I would just take a carpet a put it under so I dont scratch the windshield
Excellent video 👏🏾👏🏾 Also, what camera do you use for these videos? Quality is superb!
Thanks for doing these great videos Justin! These are excellent - you succinctly provide all the necessary information along with all the explanations and proper cautions. Your presentations are easy to understand and follow. Well done!
Well done video sir. Helped me out greatly with my son's 2016 228i. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Hey Justin just one tip. Before you take the oil filter out, tuck some paper towels around it, that way when you pull it out you catch any oil dripping off and hopefully keep your engine bay looking nice longer :)
I do the same. Good tip.
Ya got keep it clean or it could get dirty
Keep up the good work bro!!!! Much appreciated!!!!
"You got to start out small, no one really starts with..." Yeah my first was replacing a headgasket lol
Fcp is from home in MILFORD CT
Very detailed... this was very helpful! Great job!
Awesome video! Very professional and educational, thank you ❤
Owning a car and caring for it is a true enthusiast's spirit :)
Driveway or a Garage is also a nice addition to work on cars, for peps like me living in city where housing is real deal expense rather than a apartment is hard to do just on a street 😅
nice video, we need more maintenance tips like these
Glad I could help!
Brilliant tutorial thanks from NEW ZEALAND
Most of the stuff you have here just got delivered for my E90!
I have an BMW 330i 2018 F30 watched this video did the basic things as by myself. Except the oil change was to much work for me 🤭But rest of the stuff is supper simple. Thanks Justin for this informative video 🙏
Glad I could help!
Like ur new car. But i do miss ur e90 videos as having an e90 myself always found them useful.
Awesome video! It’s worth pointing out that the wiper blades live under the hood line for reduce turbulence. How much? No clue but its incremental. Newer VWs also are this way so I guess its a German thing... congrats on the new car!
Nice!!! I love fcp euro oil kits, just got mine for my F32.
I’ve always used 0w-40 Euro blend with good results.
