Whilst the ride is Absolutely harsher than normal tyres I don't find the tyres are louder and they haven't worn any faster. That comes down to what RFT you get. I have the OEM Pirelli cinterato P7, very quiet and so far I have put almost 40,000 KM on them and they're only at about 50%. I have a pump like yours and a repair kit so I don't have to replace my RFTs if I get a flat. Here in Australia if you're get a flat with RFTs you supposed to replace the tyre, I don't intend on doing that if I can avoid it, especially as my tyres cost $330 each here!

Ken Lawton Definitely comes down to the specific RFT. On our 09 E92 335i, the stock Bridgestone potenza rtfs suck handling wise and make a lot of noise... So I’ll replace them with with Conti Extreme Contact Sports most likely. Our 14 S550 had Dunlop rfts which were smooth and quiet (it is an s class after all), but they wore down extremely fast

I work in a tire shop in Michigan and I can back everything you say about run flats. Something to consider, run flats don’t absorb impact the same. Seems like every bmw or Mercedes we perform a balance on, the wheels are out of round to some extent and no longer ride smoothly. Seems like the force of a pothole goes right to the wheels and suspension.

Hey Justin thanks for the video. Just looked at a used X3 that had replacement tires that were not run flat so was looking for alternatives. Just a word of caution to all, if you are not going with the run flat tires DO have a plan. Here is a weird but true story - I have a 40+ mile commute that is mostly on rural interstate in Wisconsin, one cold (-10 F) winter night I was headed home at about 7:00 PM when overtook a car that was billowing smoke, the driver was going 65 MPH on a flat tire and from the looks of it had been for awhile - apparently hell bent on getting someplace to get help. They showed no intention of stopping and I couldn't help them while they were going 65 down the interstate so I continued on my way thinking "damn I sure wouldn't want to deal with a flat tire on a night like this". Drove the final 30 miles home, pulled into my garage, got out and was walking around the back of my truck when I hear Ssssssssssssssssss coming from the the right rear, within a minute the tire was completely flat and I proceeded to change it in the comfort of my heated garage. Moral of the story: have a plan because you just never know. Oh, one more thing, you could have a long wait for roadside assistance in rural areas, especially when it is at night and -10, always keep that gas tank at least half full.

An easy solution to running non run flats is a product called RIDE-ON. It is a self sealing puncture additive that stays in liquid form under pressure and added benefit is no need to balance the tire. It self balances. Easy enough to go with a better more comfortable ride tire. AND if your tire is low, do too loss of a lil pressure, your TPMS will tell you and you can have the tire looked at easily enough.

Justin I've changed from run flats to normal tyres about 12 months ago after owning my 3 series lci over 4 years.I can honestly say I 100% agree with you,The drive and feel of the car is much softer and in my opinion better grip in the corners because of the softer walls that allow a little flex.Anyway I've simply added a space saver (spare tyre)which is really thin and hardly takes up any room. This in my opinion was the best option as just like runflats once fitted you can only drive around 50mph yet continue your journey.

We have a 2019 X3 with run flats and would never think of changing them as recommended by BMW engineering. I believe the pros far outweigh the cons and are a great safety feature, especially when driving in congested areas and freeways. Our X3 rides fantastic and is very quiet when the tires have the proper air pressure. The run flats have already paid dividends when we got a flat while driving on vacation through a horrible storm near the Smokey Mountains after a fallen branch poked a hole in a rear tire. We were able to drive a few miles to a small town and get the flat fixed which saved us from having to empty our luggage during that storm to replace the tire. I'm sold on run flats! In case of an emergency where I couldn't get to a repair shop within 50 miles (which is rare), I keep slime and an air compressor in the vehicle.

I thought I would be 'responsible' and keep runflats when I bought my e89 Z4, but decided to change and have never looked back, luckily haven't had an issue. On non runflats the car is better in every way - more compliant, better braking and super grippy (went with Pirelli in front so it might be that and not just the non run-flatness to be fair). In my country, you're either in a city where there's a tire shop every 5 blocks (in which case you can go there if you notice your puncture early) or you're doing stretches between city centers that are 100s of kilometers away so runflats would be no help anyway. They make sense in tightly developed first world countries, but I really wish we could just get a spare wheel well and a spare again - it does make me a little nervous to just hit the road in my Z4, vs my old e46 330i that had a full size spare. Now I do the thing we're all supposed to, I walk around my car before every trip and just check my tires quick. Few punctures are so bad that they completely deflate a tire instantly. But maybe I'm just getting old, I also wish good cars were still manuals and still had cigarette lighters - even if you don't smoke they're still more useful than a 12V socket - Am I going to plug a camping fridge into my Z4?

I've had run flats on s few BMWs. They have always been performance models so tires were wider and seemed to be a magnet for nails and screws. I hate how its a game that's hard to get out of.... typically you get a flat, don't want the sudden unplanned expense to replace all 4 so you buy that one new run flat, rinse and repeat. So normally I wait until my set of run flats need replacement and get conventional performance tires. When I do encounter a leak/flat, I use a small compressor and I also have road side assistance. I don't bother with the patch kit, because usually putting some air in gets me to where I need to go for a permanent solution.

I had run flats on my bmw and I cracked rims a few times from potholes. Normal tires give but run flats don’t and all the pressure from the blunt force of a pothole go direct to the rim. $150 for rim repairs each time.

Also, when you have a puncture, run flat tires can not be repaired. Most tire stores have a policy that do not allow run flats to be patched. Something else to consider if you live in an area that has a lot of road debris and potholes. I stick to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires. The best all season tire good for track days also believe it or not. Zero road noise and they offer a very comfortable ride!

I can attest to this. Recently needed to change my Pirelli P. Zero RFT's on the rear and the price of them was going to cost 470 EUR for two 255/40/R17's. The guys recommended I change all of the tires to standard tires which costed me the exact same as two RFT's which for me was a no brainer. The fronts were 225/45/R17's which I also changed to standard tires. The steering is lighter and more comfortable to turn and maneuver (you can still feel the road really well !) and the difference in ride quality is night and day ! I do town driving as I live on a small island and the roads are quite bad and this was a major upgrade for me !

My new 2018 Mercedes-Benz C300 is already equipped with Run Flat Tires as standard equipment and has NO spare tire, nor does it have any space provision for a spare tire. My owner’s manual says that I should always replace them with the “MOE” tires (Mercedes-Benz Original Extended “Extended Mobility” tires that are contract made for MB by Continental) only for the special AMG 19” wheels. Although it has been known that the Run Flat Tires ride firm, the AMG sport suspension and the low profile tires ride firm anyway.

I don't know how RUclips recommended this video for me to watch but damn I'm so glad I did. I have a BMW 330d e90 2007 model and so far I have been driving only on runflats 225/45/R17 (front) and 255/40/R17 (rear) ever since I bought the car in Mid-January 2016. What I can agree on is that the drive is much harder on runflats than on standard tires. So about 3 weeks ago, My left rear tire broke as I was on my way to work. I had to pull over and fortunately was close to my workplace when it happened. There's a BMW dealership literally down the road from my workplace and one of my buddies works there. I called him and he came through to assist my with a spare wheel. I was so grateful for that as changing a wheel is not possible for me as I have Cerebral Palsy. Having a spare tire in the trunk would not work for me as my wheelchair occupies about 90+ percent of the trunk space. I am definitely getting myself a Air Compressor and Tire repair kit. Can't believe I only see this video in Feb 2020. Thanks Justin

I have the same experience as you, last time I caught a flat was 3 cars ago (almost 10 years).
My 335i came with 20” Pirelli P-Zero RF. It looked good with the low profile, but my interior sounded like my old Chevy on anything but new pavement. And at certain highway speeds they sounded like bongos going across the seams in the road.
Switched to Continental DWS 06 and my gosh did the right quality inside and performance wise.
I live in the edge and carry no spare, but love the tire kit and mini compressor idea!!

I switched to the Michelin Pilot 4 Sports and I have to say they made a world of difference in my driving experience. I’ve even noticed a slight improvement in gas mileage as well. I own a 2012 BMW 750li and it came with Goodyear Run Flats. I switched to standard and the difference in ride quality was astounding. The run flats was a more harsh ride but the standards are much more soft, smooth, and quiet. I've had them for around a year now and I'll NEVER go back to run flats. I bought a floor jack with stands, a patch kit, and an air compressor that plugs into the lighter. I also thought about getting AAA with roadside assistance. The run flats for my car was around $2,600 installed. That doesn't include the optional warranty for each tire. I managed to get a whole set of standard Michellins WITH the warranty for around $900. Saved $1,700. There's no way I can find sense in spending that extra $1,700 for the possibility of a flat tire. Especially when there's AAA and other options.

E90 owner for the last 4 years. I drive with the run flats. Nice piece of mind knowing I'm never stranded. I've had 3 "flats" over 4 years and on all occasions I drove to the tyre shop and got them to plug the tyre and I've driven away 100% no problems. Everyone says don't plug a run flat, it's dangerous. I call bullshit, it's 99% safe as long as the sidewall is not deformed on the tyre because of excessive flat tyre driving. Before my E90 I had a Honda Civic and it was notorious for the tyres breaking seal from the rims under hard cornering. Because the runflats have supported sidewalls I've never had a tyre break it's seal no matter how hard I throw the car into a corner. RFT's also stand up much better to kerbing (when she drives my car) because they are so stiff on the sidewall. My civic was always having it's sidewalls chewed up.

I followed suggestions about changing over to regular tires on my 2015 BMW 550i.
It was a great idea until I encountered a flat on my rear right tire. Just 2miles from the closest tire shop I decided to try my luck and pulled over immediately to notice that my tire was completely shot beyond repair.I pulled over to change into the sparetire which was in the trunk of my car. I am contemplating to go back and replace all tires for my good old Michelin Run Flats.
BMW vehicles are heavy and my beautiful Rohana rims deserve better care in spite of any noice produced by tougher ROF tires.
A fix with flat tire kits beats buying a tire and having to have them balance and mounted any time.
I recommend OEM tires as suggested by the vehicle’s manufacturer.

I didn’t have a spare but i had a kit similar to the one that was put in the glove compartment in the video. I pushed the rubber into the hole in the tire but i didn’t do it right (i guess), because it came out after i got on the highway. I called roadside assistance and they took an hour to get there. Runflat tires are safer if you get a puncure at high speed - you'll just see info on cluster what tire pressure is low and you'll have to reduce speed. If you're on autobahn, you feel much more confident - you can just drive to the next exit without having to pull over. With runflat tires you have also very low risk of damaging tire sidewall (it's much thicker), so tire blowout is almost impossible - it's very important when you're cruising at high speed - blowout at 200 km/h is the last thing you want :-)

Thanks for your BMW videos. I have a 2012 335i with the run-flats. I had it a week or so and driving to Vegas (975 miles) I picked up a small nail. I added air until I get to Vegas. BMW didn't have the tires and I couldn't find anyone to fix it or replace it. When I got back home, Les Schwab fixed it. Because of the spare issue I replaced them at 40K. 7 years later, I pick up another small nail, but because it was closer to the edge "they" won't fix it. The tire still had plenty of life, so I added Slime and it is working fine probably 2K miles later. I do carry the compressor and patch/plug kit also. Next time, I will probably go with real tires as I agree how often do you get a flat. I'm thinking adding slime to any tire is a smart thing either tires.

There were two incidents run-flat tires were a lifesaver: 1) Traveling on the highway and the run-flats when flat. The in-car tire warned me, however, I was able to control the car and drive ~3 miles to the highway exit. 2) My daughter traveling on the highway and hit a brick at night with run-flats. The tire blows out and she was able to control the car and exit the highway. It took a chunk of the tire off the rim. If you do long distance driving at speeds, run-flats can be a lifesaver. I agree run-flats can be a harsher ride when new, but smooth out with miles.

So here's my 2 cents on Run Flat tires, being that I work directly for BMW. There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to running both Run Flats and Non-Run Flats. I'll briefly go over why Run Flats are still recommended for your BMW and dispell most of the common issues he brought up. 1. You get what you pay for. If you buy lower tier Run Flats, you will get subpar performance and longevity. Your BMW is a performance vehicle, whether you're buying an M3 or an X1. 2. Your vehicle was designed, tuned, and aligned from the factory with Run Flat tires in mind. That includes the ride and the weight. Looking at your vehicle, I'm guessing it came with the Bridgestone Potenza RE050. Yes, they are loud and ride rough. So your optimum change would have been to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. More expensive, sure, but why DECREASE the performance of your performance vehicle? They're more comfortable than the DWS06 (and yes, I've driven both extensively, I even have a set of the Conti's on my personal Subaru). 3. You bought a BMW. Not a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Expect maintenance costs to reflect that. If you always opt for the most cost-effective thing, you will run into problems, guaranteed. That canister and air compressor, what we call the BMW Mobility Kit, is meant for nail punctures only, and is a short-term solution to get you to a repair center, something that you should do immediately. However, what do you do in the event of a blowout? Your Run Flat would drive you safely to a service center. It may not be a comfortable ride getting there, but I've had vehicles roll in with half the sidewall missing before.
The bottom line is don't cheap out just to save a few dollars or sacrifice the performance of your car. While there are good (and great) Non-Run Flat options on the market, it's still not recommended and you won't see any extra life over a quality set of Run Flats.
PS, get your BMW aligned at a proper BMW Service Center every time you change your tires, regardless of where you go. Your tires and your wallet will thank you.

@@barkleychristopher88 That was 4 years ago and it took me 2 months to figure it out. Amazing that you actually named the very tire I replaced them with. Congrats.

I opted to go the air compressor kit route because Im a diy type. I bought a kit wich has everything needed in a storage case that I can hide in the bottom of the trunk. I get a flat. My car lets me know, I fix it on the spot. Air up Im gone in 10 minutes! Lol.😂

I hit a huge pot hole and blew the tire out. Side wall pealed off. I made to a local tire shop, and they had a used regular tire. A kit and compressor would not have worked.

@@franciscopasallo396 I understand and I'm glad you had it fixed. Next time I hope you don't hit any hole...👍

Great video Justin, Thanks! I'm due for a tire change soon. You have informed me greatly. I'm going with the regular tires and the compressor/tire repair kit. Great solution. Thank you!

HI Justin: Same month I purchased my E93 2012 in 2017, I changed the run-flat tires to regular tires and just like you, the difference in ride quality was like night and day. I purchased also a spare 17" tire, I haven't tried it yet, I'm afraid it won't fit because of the brake calipers Like you said the odds of having flat tire are very hight, lucky me....so far. I am running 225/4018 on all four corners. Planning to go wider as soon as I fix/powder coat my rims. I got a set of Racing Dynamics GRS and they look awesome.
