Being an automotive technician I would reccomend once u realize u have a flat to FIRST fill your tire to atleast 40psi.(if you have a portable air pump) few reasons why in a real world situation u are not going to want to find the leak by driving on a flat damaging ur rim or breaking the bead of the rim. It's very difficult but possible to plug a tire that has no air but while applying force the rubber tire will fold inwards and bend making it difficult to plug. Just add air to tire first, then pull out what ever is making ur tire leak. plug and fill to your doors placard reccomended PSI.
It's probably better to remove the wheel completely. It's not gonna be easy detecting, removing the puncture, and fixing while on the knees under a car.
Ohhh, that's why it just took me 30 minutes to do it and almost broke my wrist. I gave up halfway in too, probably will have to redo we'll see. At least now I know how to do it easily, thanks!
I carry similar patch kit. Got it from local store. I found some random pump. We have a plug in the trunk on drivers side for power adaptor. Also when fixing flat, if there's still air in them. Take all air out before you patch it. This is just temp fix. But pretty neat to get you back on the road. And get to near tire shop so they can put a plug from the inside. I approve this. Cheers
Great video. Realistically I don't think you have enough leverage to do this without removing the tire. We really need to keep a jack and lug wrench. Thank you for the video.
Oh yeah, this should go smoothly at 2:00 a.m on a pitch black road. Only pure fix is tossing either a space or full size spare. Oh don't forget the Jack😂Each passing M 3-M4 gets longer/wider/fatter yet BMW doesn't include a spare due to added weight.
Growing up in amish country, this is all common knowledge… but, I recently moved to a city- and omg. I’ve helped more people then I ever thought I would have to
Thanks! Just bought a new Jaguar F-Pace, and it's a shock finding out there is no spare! Just ordered the kit from your link and feel a lot less worried.
No tire shop that I have worked at or heard of uses plugs... they all use patches. Plugs do have their place though as they don't require a tire dismount.
Of course if your tire is seriously damaged (a side wall tear for example) this repair kit would be as useful as a child's magic wand. I would not buy a vehicle without a spare and the only reason many people buy cars without spares is that they are clueless about things in general. Even a donut spare would be infinitely more useful than no spare at all. Good luck everybody!
This is a great video, and the repair kit is certainly very clever, unfortunately though just like tyre repair kits containing a bottle of sealant, it does have its limitations, if the punctured tyre has a large hole or cut in it, it renders this method ineffective, I don’t think there is any substitute for a spare wheel, that works in all situations irregardless of how damaged the tyre is.
having this repair kit & a jack does provide peace of mind. However, the most important safety tip is getting your vehicle off the road to a safe area to protect yourself & passengers. A flat can happen anywhere & anytime. Got a flat on an interstate a few years ago w/ my children in the vehicle. Didn't even cross my mind to fix it. Pulled over to the shoulder, flashers on, set up a reflector 50' - 60' behind the vehicle, called 911 to inform state police w/ mileage marker & location then called my insurance company for a tow. And yes, I've seen people replacing flat tires in the most dangerous places.
Of coarse there a better quality pumps out there but they cost a lot of money. I found that this one is great, has amazing reviews and is very reasonably priced.
No, every time I’ve had a flat it’s due to a pothole that ALWAYS blows the sidewalk. A spare is the only peace of mind especially up here in Northern areas where roads are bad!
great idea, if your in shape, have a jack, lug wrench. Able to remove the tire , find the issue maybe in the dark! I'm not a nay sayer just looking at the whole picture.
That's kool thx. Just bought a series 1 Beamer & it didn't have a spare so was like?????? It does have a pump though, but very unusual to me. So this has helped me heaps.
Just put on regular tires on my x3. I ordered the plug kit and pliers from your links. I am going to find an old scissor jack and carry as well so it will be easier to find the nail.
very nice! great point on not necessarily needing to even jack up the car🤯 for around 100$ altogether for the compressor and plug kit, wow. great thing to keep in the trunk of any vehicle thanks for a great vid dude
spent 7 hours helping a friend with a Tesla . No spare tire , no wheel wrench and no jack . AAA refused to come , Private tow service wanted $1000 . He was lucky to find me .The tire was irreparable so off to the tire shop , then back to the car . Total driving time was 6 hours . Plus my American wrench didn't fit the lug bolts although Tesla was made in America . And cell phone service isn't available everywhere .
I assume that I can use the tier inflater pump that came with my Toyota Corolla hybrid to pump up the tire, without using that sealant gunk once I put the plug in the tire. Also, I could buy a jack to lift the tire off the ground and then rotate it to expose the nail, screw, or whatever caused the puncture. How long is a home done plug fix good for? I assume it would still be a good idea to have a tire repair shop look at it as soon as possible to make sure the result will remain safe. OTOH Flats caused by punctures are probably the issue in well over half the cases (I'm guessing 60-90%). However, blow outs, wheel damage and huge cuts in the tire due to road hazards are NOT repairable and a spare tire will be the ONLY way to get you on the road again. If you keep an eye on your tire condition, and replace tires long before they wear out you can avoid most blowouts, but you can still suffer a major tire/wheel failure if you drive over major road debris. Off roaders should NEVER go without a spare!!.
I regard a spare of some kind as essential. I have had several blowouts and used a spare each time during my many (60+) years of motoring . None of these blowouts have have been repairable by any method known to man. One was a low profile tyre that also ruined the wheel.
If you are going the power tool route, consider having a half inch drive electric impact drill with the right size socket, and perhaps a small extension bar. The tire wrench supplied will be a pain if you need to take the tire off. If the wheel lug nuts are torqued to spec, many drivers will not be able to use them. The alternative is a hollow pipe slid on top the car wrench so that it becomes a "breaker bar". That said, an impact wrench is a much better solution. Another is one of those 4-way X wheel nut lug wrenches. they are cheap at under well under US $20, and you have much better leverage. Add a 32 pound hammer, and you are good to go. The main challenge when you have to remove a flat tire is getting an even flat, hard surface. Cars with low ground clearance can make it hard to both take the tire off, or fix the flat with the wheel on. For both methods you need some strength, so those of slight build, low fitness or advanced age could find the process a challenge. So if you have the option, call an auto club.
Maybe a video about letting your m3 idle after a hard run to let the turbos cool off? Not sure if this is myth or something that should be done! Great content btw!
It should be done on any turbo car. It’s common knowledge that you want them to cool off and all the fluids to run through it before you shut off the car

40 psi? that seems like alot of pressure. i usually put 33 on my tires for better comfort. That actually happened to my m3, i was too scared to do it my self but the tire shop had to take the tire off and do two patches on each side, the inner side they put a small rubber cap on it so it would never leak. I paid 20 bucks, i was kinda skeptical on taking my m3 to a shop i never went, but it was that or a new tire $$. They actually did better than the 1st shop i went when i got all my tires replaced, and it was a bmw certified shop. I think the BMW manual on my M4 says to never try and fix the flat and always get it towed on a flatbed. Not sure why. I do have the fix-a-flat kit in the trunk.
@@grocerylist Agree, I had to replace TPMS each time I had a flat and used Fix a flat. If you use the BMW solution, it washes out (latex), no replacement of TPMS. The Tommy way via plug is efficient and less costly.
@@TommyLGarage Yes I agree, it is costly. I went through a set of rear tires in 3 months due to flats last year. A nail on the sidewall or on the edge of your tire should warrant a tire replacement. @@TommyLGarage well, there is a problem, and a real one. Just went through this situation, and no emergency method works when the tyre is cut on the sidewall and the cut is 5cm in lenght
Unfortunately, at the critical points of your video I couldn't actually see what you were doing because the camera was too far away. It does give me a general idea what to do but also I don't think this would be possible to do if the tire was still on the car, if it was the rear tire.
@@TommyLGarage in 2004 they came standard, now you can't even get a spare on the new ones, they give you an inflator kit, but if the tire is too damaged, you gotta get it towed.
It don’t work for my low profile tire, i did plug in run for about 10mile the air came back out. If u put the nail somewhere else not between the tread it will not work. 😂
While not all cars (or BMWs) have them, where is the pump that came with your car as part of the factory “fix-a-flat” kit that comes with all BMW M-cars?
1. Fill tire with air to full. 2. Find leak. 3. Plug the leaking hole while tire is almost full of air, this makes it very easy to plug it. 4. Refill tire with air to the psi specs. 5. Start drifting! 😎
What about damaging your rim when sticking the plug deep into the tire ? Wouldn’t you have to still take the tire off the wheel in order to plug it safely without damaging the rim ?
It depends on the manufacturer specs/recommendations. The tire shop recently patched my Bridgestone potentza run flat with no issues because the placement of the nail was within the specs for repair.
There is no way my wife would would do this, not that she couldn’t, she just wouldn’t, I’m sure if she was 6 hours away she’d call me to come and patch the tire, she just ain’t going to do it, but can’t imagine her changing a tire either🤣😂🤣😂
Hit a pothole this video is useless. Just have a real spare tire, don't get cheap. Ive had a few flats with a land-rover and they will destroy a tire so that trick will not work. I have a kit like that but never used it as the tires were too messed up. Its a nice thought for a video and in some rare circumstances. There is no substitute for a real spare.
I'm calling B.S. Doesn't work on sidewalls. Potholes can and will destroy the sidewall. There is no substitute for a spare tire. You WILL be stranded. Run flats included if you're more than 50 miles from help. Tow companies charge $400 plus for an after hour tow. There's zero "peace of mind" in what this video claims after it happens to you.
"This is what it looks like on the inside" I won't be able to see this if my tire is on it's rim on the side of the road. If I'm taking my tire off I'll just put the spare on, because if you don't buy one separate if you car doesn't come with one your an idiot. I can put a spare on and have it tightened in 10 min or less.
@@TommyLGarage Like 30lbs do car companies have a weight restriction on mileage for their drivers? No oh well than I guess there could be a 30lbs discrepancy. People are so fucking dumb now it hurts. Come on asteroid

pot hole blow out (which given the state of UK roads is most common) is not solvable roadside. The cheapskate car manufacturers need to revisit the real world. Why do we need to rely on roadside recovery to get home. Put a spare in the bloody car when it's new!
maybe not where you live and your advice is great but I can assure you, living in the sticks in rural UK, a hole in your tyre is 90% going to be a pot hole which no amount of spray gunk is going to help. I've been stuck waiting for recovery services now too many times not to believe that car manufacture is out of step with the majority of road users. But hey ho. Good video none the less
this is useless for a blow-0ut. having no spare with a side-wall failure is a multi day disaster when there is no spare. nail and screw leaks are flat tire 101.

Cliche but a 911 Turbo or C4S
Something I can daily drive. I don’t believe in weekend cars. How about you ?
Tommy L Garage i currently own a bmw M235i i’m only 18 but when i’m older i would like to own either a zo6 Vette or a mcclaren 570 when they’re cheaper
Easy , but what happen when you are on the road and the tire is on the wheel and you don’t have space for fix the tire ? Do some vacuum to your trunk
You can always get to the nail even if your tire is on the car. Just roll the car forward until the nail is exposed
@@TommyLGarage try doing this on a dark wet and windy night!
But when the cut is on the side of the tire ? Like glass parts cut your tire.....
Then you’re screwed :(
what if tyre has a 2-3cm on the side?
No problem
@@TommyLGarage well, there is a problem, and a real one. Just went through this situation, and no emergency method works when the tyre is cut on the sidewall and the cut is 5cm in lenght
How you are going to repaire the tire, if it makes an explosion?
If it makes an explosion, repairing the tire will the least of my worries...I’ll be too busy looking for my arm.
@@TommyLGarage nice snark but clearly the guy was referring to a blow out or cut.
Unfortunately, at the critical points of your video I couldn't actually see what you were doing because the camera was too far away. It does give me a general idea what to do but also I don't think this would be possible to do if the tire was still on the car, if it was the rear tire.
I would never be able to do this I'm 68 and have bad Shoulder problems
What’s your alternate ?
The lube thing is called rubber cement
It was actually Vaseline
Nice!!
It makes sense!
My beamer has a fifth wheel and tire in the trunk!
I need one like that !
@@TommyLGarage in 2004 they came standard, now you can't even get a spare on the new ones, they give you an inflator kit, but if the tire is too damaged, you gotta get it towed.
What diffuser you have?
It was a one or two off made by supreme auto
Anyone else have an OCD moment looking at the pebble in the adjacent tread area?!?
I know. Noticed it in editing haha
It don’t work for my low profile tire, i did plug in run for about 10mile the air came back out. If u put the nail somewhere else not between the tread it will not work. 😂
Interesting point
add a nice light in case this happens at night
That’s an excellent point! Which flashlight do you recommend ?
@@TommyLGarage lol i don't know. probably something that it is hands free. you need your both hands working on the tire.
While not all cars (or BMWs) have them, where is the pump that came with your car as part of the factory “fix-a-flat” kit that comes with all BMW M-cars?
It’s sealed. It’s not a very good pump
Bmw did not provide fix a flat kit for u car?
They did but it ruins your tire
Now we have to put pucher instead of search for puncher shop
Haha yes
My van doesn't have a spare either
I know a guy who can hook you up !
1. Fill tire with air to full.
2. Find leak.
3. Plug the leaking hole while tire is almost full of air, this makes it very easy to plug it.
4. Refill tire with air to the psi specs.
5. Start drifting! 😎
That’s the spirit !!
What about damaging your rim when sticking the plug deep into the tire ? Wouldn’t you have to still take the tire off the wheel in order to plug it safely without damaging the rim ?
Not really. And even if you nicked the wheel - it doesn’t matter because it’s on the inside.
It wasn't easy, especially if you are on the road side!
It’s easier than changing a tire
Yeaaaa.... ill just call AAA 😂 but very entertaining video
Thanks !
AAA doesn’t fix flats. They’ll take you to a shop where you’ll spend double the cost of this kit
Soooooo many that's what she said jokes in this vid lol
Eaaaaaaaasy there :)
Hahaha.....my local tyre shop uses this for £5
Seems like a great deal
@@TommyLGarage lol.....the first time they repaired my tyre I was like heyyyyy what the hell you doing.....but I swear it never failed!
With run flats this is the only method of repair. A tire shop will not patch a run flats. Some kind of a legal issue.
Then this is the only solution
It depends on the manufacturer specs/recommendations. The tire shop recently patched my Bridgestone potentza run flat with no issues because the placement of the nail was within the specs for repair.
There is no way my wife would would do this, not that she couldn’t, she just wouldn’t, I’m sure if she was 6 hours away she’d call me to come and patch the tire, she just ain’t going to do it, but can’t imagine her changing a tire either🤣😂🤣😂
Maybe a handsome gentleman would stop and help her hehe
Hit a pothole this video is useless. Just have a real spare tire, don't get cheap. Ive had a few flats with a land-rover and they will destroy a tire so that trick will not work. I have a kit like that but never used it as the tires were too messed up. Its a nice thought for a video and in some rare circumstances. There is no substitute for a real spare.
This will help in 95% of situations
The theory is OK but try doing this on a dark wet and windy night!
Better this than changing a tire I think. But also both would be terrible at night in the rain
Most flats happen by a picture. This is what I demonstrated. What you’re referring to is s rare occurrence.
Pinhole. Pop in the sidewall you need a spare tire wtf
Yea wtf
"This is what it looks like on the inside" I won't be able to see this if my tire is on it's rim on the side of the road. If I'm taking my tire off I'll just put the spare on, because if you don't buy one separate if you car doesn't come with one your an idiot. I can put a spare on and have it tightened in 10 min or less.
Spare. Jack. That’s a lot of extra weight and space in the trunk
@@TommyLGarage Like 30lbs do car companies have a weight restriction on mileage for their drivers? No oh well than I guess there could be a 30lbs discrepancy. People are so fucking dumb now it hurts. Come on asteroid
Shit I wish I saw it last month, spent time and money to go to a tire shop for that lol
Never hurts to stock up and be ready !
@@TommyLGarage will get a set now that I saw how easy it was. Thought the shop would do a lot more like take the tire off and put a seal from the inside, I was wrong lol.
Boot needs a good hoover :)
Justin Mclees hahah yes
Justin Mclees 🇺🇸 translation : trunk needs a good vacuuming
Scott Meridew haha yes yes I know I know
pot hole blow out (which given the state of UK roads is most common) is not solvable roadside. The cheapskate car manufacturers need to revisit the real world. Why do we need to rely on roadside recovery to get home. Put a spare in the bloody car when it's new!
Pothole blowouts are not as common as a simple nail. This helps give us a peace of mind.
maybe not where you live and your advice is great but I can assure you, living in the sticks in rural UK, a hole in your tyre is 90% going to be a pot hole which no amount of spray gunk is going to help.
This will still help you when you get a regular puncture
I keep this kit in all my cars. I feel its much better than the Flat Fix Kit in this video. Check it out: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018EUDHW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Totally impractical at the roadside - trying to find your leak in the first place would usually be impossible.
Actually you’re wrong
@@TommyLGarage not being able to offer even a single syllable of your reason says everything. Really? On the roadside In the dark and wet you are meant to find the subtle signs of a puncture? You are a dishonest person.
Robert Payne would you prefer this or swapping a spare tire...a spare which your car doesn’t have.
