I have run flats: but they never last: due to portholes: the side walls are to thin:

Thanks for the feedback. I did indeed see RUclips videos that run-flat tires are quite fragile and can break very easily by hitting even smaller pot holes. I think technology is not there quite yet, but hopefully another 10 years from now we will have a nice solution for both performance and protection against punctures.

I’ve ran runflats since 2007 on almost all my cars. I liked not having to stop when I got a flat and just stopping off early the next day to get it repaired. FYI, I rarely ever had to replace the tire due to a puncture. Also, I didn’t find them to wear any quicker (I usually got 40k-55k miles on them) and I didn’t find them much more expensive than regular tires. Another advantage is the stiff sidewall kept the great handling feel around corners even if the ultimate grip wasn’t quite as good. It was very fun. However, they were much harsher over abrupt imperfections in the road (large potholes, metal covers, etc) and they were slightly louder than normal tires. Also, you had less options for replacements if you kept with a runflat. In the past I usually avoided Bridgestones and usually opted for Continentals and once for Pirellis but I know the current gen is better.

I should note I usually opted for smaller diameter tires on my BMWs and Minis to avoid the super skinny sidewalls and super harsh ride. And I usually got the adaptive M Sport suspension.

Thanks for sharing your experience. In some cases run-flats can even improve the ride. My brother put run-flats on Hyundai Ioniq 6 and his car got much better: more confident cornering. I think BMW didn’t go with the right brand or generation of run-flats on their X3 M40i. As we see newer gen run-flats they will only improve in terms of ride comfort and still delivering better grip in the corners.

Runflats are going to be replaced with airless tires in future

Let’s see. I think we will soon get to the technology where flats will not be a proble and we will have better technology for better cornering under load

Eventually maybe but self-sealing tires are a more immediate solution that is gaining popularity.
