Honestly, this is a BRILLIANT idea on Mattel's part!
As a person who's getting into marketing, it's a really clever idea that they're selling these sets as exclusive items to get excitement back for the Wooden Railway brand! When kids and their parents hear there's exclusive items for their favourite brand at a certain shop, kids are gonna go nuts for it and will want to get it! It's a good natured way of bringing in parents with the exclusive bait.
On top of that, the sets are well worth both the price and being called exclusive! I remember having that Percy Takes the Plunge set and the James Goes Buzz Buzz set with the original VHS as a young lad (though I've long lost the book and VHS), and it's nice to see them go back to their roots with both having more wooden parts and less plastic parts, and this new Story Collection! The books look very nice featuring good stories with worth-while lessons, the layouts are good for kids just starting out with the collection, and the features like the turntable and coal loader are just amazing to look at! And it's nice to see them have Book Packs for those who either just want to have smaller versions of the sets to add to their pre-existing layouts, but also (in the case of James Sorts It Out) add on what they've missed out on with the other set of the same name! I don't even hate the idea of Logan that much! He's got some nice detail and a nice character for kids to look up to.
The only issue I have with this is that I do hope this isn't just for America, as I myself would love to pick up the Logan book pack myself here in Canada. I don't even care if it's a select amount like in America, I'd see them or buy them myself.
Aside from that, this is a really good idea by Fisher Price! The set is nice with alot of great features, destinations and rolling stock, the price is decent, and the book packs are a smart move on the company's part. And I hope this gets expanded next year, both in countries and in terms of sets and packs! :)
Great review. I love these Sodor Story Collection sets. If they're only available in America, I'll never get them. I live in Norway, so it'll be far too expensive with customs and all that. I don't really need the whole sets, just the engine and book pack, like you're giving away :) I'm really interested in the books too. It would mean a lot if you choose me :) It's pretty much my only chance to get one of these.
Hey jlouvier, Putting my 2 cents into this competition and giving my opinion about Mattel would make this a breeze, but I'm not necessarily saying I should win, I just feel like this is a great opportunity to actually vent out publicly about how I'm sick of Mattel ruining the Thomas and Friends ranges.
The Trackmaster redesigns claiming to be "better" are exactly the opposite of that. Claiming to be able to climb taller hills, and being stronger, is a major stretch, 90% of the old designed Tomy/Plarail engines could do the hills, bar the tender engines with the 'C' batteries in the tender.
The Take 'N Play redesigns are a rather small issue, but none-the-less, rather ridiculous: The new style of bigger magnets incorporated onto the now, smaller bodies of the new engines make it look, very rather silly. Furthermore, the fact that the new magnets act just like the Wooden Railway range make it a big downside, being the fact that they can not couple up both ways, and they have to be a specific direction.
Wooden Railway: Long story short, the Wooden Railway range is the last actual decent range Mattel has to offer, other than the; almost knock off seeming: 'free rollers' and such.
But, the fact that Wooden Railway has been going at a steady pace since the beginning back in the 90's: With wooden bogies, funnels, and domes. Very quickly they decided to give up the Wooden funnels and smokeboxes in return for more detail into the funnel, of which, is very easy to look past. The best time for wooden railway, in my humble opinion, was when Tomy had the copyright to make these products back around when 'Day of the Diesels' and 'Blue Mountain Mystery' were out/about to come out. Everything, minus the faces, funnels, smokestacks, wheels, and axels was made out of wood, and everything was painted into extreme detail on the engines, and rolling stock, and seeing the all plastic rolling stock was very rare, such as the livestock cars, and the original Christmas present car design being rare to find for their time, but not anymore, that's basically all there is now a days. Back on track to the main subject: The letter from the sellers of these new products is exactly how I feel on the subject, but on a bit more of an angry point; it's plain out, stupid. since the beginning they shown they can do all these special shapes, like cylinders for domes, blocks with small slopes on top for the bogies, and arches for boilers, but now they feel as if they need to do these special shapes out of plastic to make their production lines go faster, let me tell you something Mattel: We don't want another 'Plastic Railway', you're turning every range into that. You should have never bought out Tomy when they had the copyright, they knew what they were doing since the start, and they only got better, you have made everything worse. I beg of you all to please stop ruining everything that's good in the Thomas and Friends Merchandise. Please. If you wouldn't have turned everything into plastic in the Wooden Railway range, you wouldn't have to do these 'test' things where only 20 stores, (which might I add is completely stupid. If you want to make money, make it so your product could be widespread, and have more of a chance to be sold.) with new characters and sets.
That's my rant, thank you for listening to what has been coming from me for a long time now towards Mattel. Great video, jlouvier. Especially loved the opening, touched my heart. Keep up the great work :)
I like Mattel's idea. These sets could revolutionize the way we play with Thomas Wooden Railway forever. This will also allow kids to play along with the book or create their own story.
I really love that they are bringing books back and attaching it to a character. It really brings the story alive when a kid can hold the character in their hand while reading it! Thanks for commenting
I think it's quite interesting that Mattel is doing story packs again and releasing a wooden railway exclusive character.
I really like how the set was based on the Logan and the Big Blue Engines book. Makes it very interesting. I really wish we have those kind of books and sets in the UK.
I really do think this is a great idea. Thomas Wooden Railway has been a quality product since 1992, and has persisted despite Thomas changing hands many times. We've always had fear that the toy quality would suffer, but clearly Mattel wants to reassure consumers, investors and toy stores that the integrity of Thomas, as a brand and as toys, will continue to be that of the highest quality.
Plus, it's a great way to reach back to Thomas's origin as a series of books; that each of these sets comes with a book can help encourage a love for reading for kids, which is what children really need nowadays.
I personally think it's a good idea. The reason is to get kids to read besides watching the tv show. Also adding a new engine that HIT won't banish in the next seasons is neat. I personally think it's a good idea for younger kids learning to read with new characters. Also it's bringing Thomas back to his roots where it was just a story book than a tv show.

I like this set over all but the price and limited accessibility of this set and the more upcoming sets. I love that people are demanding the wooden railway like it should be. I would also like to compliment you for the kindness you have gave to Mattel about not ranting on about the plastic and pretending it was always in the series.
First off, the use of wood is a big thing for the trains. Some people might be thinking that the tracks are already made of wood, so why should everything else be wood? It's a Wooden railway SYSTEM! I loved the wooden railway as a kid. Sure a few pieces of plastic were there, but I didn't mind. Now the removal of wood, well I could see that on the rolling stock of the freight cars in this set, and I have to say that it kind of takes away the nostalgic, classic value of the trains. As for the set, I thought the turntable was really cool, how a lever was used to turn it. It looks pretty simple, and the station looks pretty cool too. The layout looks simple and complicated at the same time, but that's what makes it good!. Personally, I feel that if it captures the imagination of a person, it will definitely work for them. (Sorry if I made this too long, I just love Thomas).
This is a step in the right direction for Mattel! They acknowledged our desire for more wood in the wooden railway! They could make this even better by taking stories from the classic and new Railway Series and make story packs with those- that would truly take the wooden railway back to its root. What I don't like is the crazily limited number of retailers. I probably won't get to pick up Logan because I'm not close enough to a store that sells his pack :( But by all means, Mattel, keep on going!
And, I would also like to check in to your contest. I think that the storybook collections are a great idea for release, for thy provide kids with a train and a book, so they can read the story, and then play it out. I think Mattel is doing a brilliant job on making new trains, and releasing new ones (as well as old ones) out to the public. A cool thing that I would like for Mattel to do is possibly incorporate the old Railway stories books into their storybook collection, because it would most likely make them more popular (by collectors) and get kids introduced into what happened before the new animated series. I like the set good detail it really returning to the classic days of the wooden railway. I think Mattel is finally starting to listen to the wooden railway community that they want quality in these brand of toys.
I love the beginning of this video. I think it speaks to everyone when they go and procure something they have been looking for. I don't think I could find anything wrong with the set, as you said that the creativity is the important thing about any train set, and this one is full of opportunities for new stories to be created, fun to be had, and new sights, rolling stock, destinations, and friends to be brought to any collection and home. As for Mattel and Fisher-Price's decision on "specialty-exclusive" sets, I think it's a novelty for whichever store receives them, but pricing must be taken into consideration, as many customers won't want to pay $249.99 + tax for a wooden railway train set. I hope that Fisher-Price also starts taking this sort of thing into consideration for their Take-N-Play and TrackMaster ranges.
Couldn't agree more, Hank. I spent months trying to find a Trackmaster Porter and I was lucky to find a model of him at the Toys 'R' Us in Pennsylvania.

I personally think that Mattel is hitting the nail on the head with these new releases. I'm not entirely sure if they mean "America" as in North America or just the US, but if it's the latter us Canadians are missing out. There are so many little specialty retailers, especially here in Canada where there are more of those than Walmarts, Targets and Toys R Us's. I'm very excited to hear that Mattel is going to try and revert their new "Department Store" take on this line as going to big giant retailers like that to pick up these toys doesn't feel as special as going to a little store inside of a mall where you can know the staff. I have no doubt that in 10 years time, this might be worth a fair amount of money. Excellent review!
The set is actually very nice-love that coal loader and turntable thing. I feel like it's exclusivity might hinder it's success though, as I doubt it's going to be available anywhere but the US of A! However, I like this idea-providing it can become a regular thing, and the quality looks top notch!
Logan has got to be my faveret character!
These new story packs are a nice renewal of the Wooden Railway brand, nothing like it has ever been seen and it may give what many of us are screaming for, nicer quality and customization. However 20 locations across 50 states does seem small, but all in all, I'm pretty excited for the future.
To be honest I think these new sets with the books are a very clever idea, kids might not know about what the wooden sets were from in the past, now they can play along with a book which I like. But the price for that set you bought, WOW, once again another excellent review ;)
I want to get the complete set because I don't have any and only a few odd engines in wooden but after seeing the price around the $200 mark I better get it off eBay and save up my money. I wish I had totally Thomas stores where I live. I think this is going in the right direction despite Logan is an exclusive and these will only be in 20 stores in the US. Thumbs up to Mattel for bringing back wooden book sets. Thanks for the heads up on the 20 stores. As for Mattel's offer to these stores I'm going 50-50. May the most random comment win.

I love how you started off the video with you going to the store and show basically your point of view. In your mind, it gives that effect that your in the store, looking around, and well just being amazed by ALL OF THE TOYS! But anyway, I like the detail on the box. It was so nostalgia and that standard look like all of the other boxes, except the book was included. I'm think it's been a long time since the company decided to put a storybook in with the wooden railway set. FUN FACT: On the TTTE Wikia, I heard that Logan is not going to be in the TV Show, he will only be seen in those 2 Sets so, he will be Limited Time Only like you said! [MAYBE, not saying to confirm] But, back on topic, I simply love the set! The only thing I don't like is that Knapford Station/Signal part. I didn't read the book or buy it yet, so I don't know if it's in the story? Anyway, Logan looks awesome! The face..well...creepy and it needs alot of changes on it..BUT I got to say, the price for the set is..WOW..I thought it would be like $150 but I'm not judging! Sorry for long comment and get off topic at some parts, but ow well... XS

This was a very nice looking set. I love the look on Logan's face, and love the new turn table. however it is a shame that they won't be sold outside America, and will probably cost a fortune on ebay. I do like the idea of the themed packs as it add more variety which is great for collectors. Keep up the great vids Josh

I think that these new specialty sets are a good idea, both for consumers and retailers. Retailers are able to offer something exclusive, which will make parents, or just Thomas Fans, more willing to buy, and it adds some more collectibles to the range, for in a few years time, I'm sure these sets will be extremely rare, and anybody that picked them up when available will be glad they did. Nice Review Josh! Can't wait to see your reviews on the other new 2014 WR releases. :)

Cool new intro for a classic set
There is no doubt; this set is very visually appealing. The detail on the pieces is incredible and I'm sure kids who love the Wooden Railway will love this set. I also like how, relatively speaking, there is less plastic here compared to other TWR releases in the past years.
But if I just sing the praises of the piece, it is not much of a critique. There are two things which stand out to me here:
Number one- The price. At 250 dollars, this is not affordable to the common Wooden Railway consumer. However, since it is a specialty item, and jlouvier said himself there was a considerable increase in the quality of the wood, I can concede that at least this price was the result of higher quality materials.
Number two- This is something I have mentioned in past videos, and it applies here too. The biggest thing I do not like about this set is that it is "self contained." In recent years, it seems that TWR has released an awful lot of sets which are pretty much layouts in themselves. As a classic TWR user, I believe that destinations and sets should have open ends, so that they can be incorporated into larger layouts. Destinations that fall into this category include the 1997 Mountain tunnel and the classic sawmill.
Best of luck to everybody; I know that whoever wins that bookpack is going to be a very happy camper.

i really wish that store was in arkansas but i like this little logan theme there doing its great because now their making exclusive characters and other stuff like i believe thomas will be out for a long time

I honestly think this is a good thing to have some limited edition products like these. I remember 10-11 years ago when we had the limited edition Thomas, James and Gordon with the special gold plaque with the art work in the background of the tracks. I am hoping Mattel is going to incorporate more wood into their sets just because it is the wooden railway and that's what it's for. Anyways, great video! Hope to maybe get this soon.

A local and very special Thomas store where I would visit frequently as a young child, was closed, due to bigger market stores selling Thomas Wooden Railway toys. This made me sad. And here I was thinking this would be a negative review! I'm sooo excited for this new round of TWR products! That coal loader reminds me of the season 6 one in which Percy was flipped over in during Percy's chocolate crunch. I hope that one of those specialty stores is in my area...I'll be investing my money into the custom characters and gear for my WW2 uniform and it's very nice of you to do a giveaway especially with the pricetag!
Amazing review Josh! This set looks really quality and I'm pleased Mattel making an effort to step it up a level. The destinations look very quality :D The fact that these sets are only available in 20 specialty stores in the US is a tad on the annoying side though :P for us TWR fans elsewhere! Personally I've always been wanting a TWR coal car loader made so its great to see one at last! My only concern would be that the quality in the set is so high that it's a shame it is unavailable for others in different locations.
All in all fantastic review on this set Josh and I hope the coal car loader will be released as an individual destination some time in the future!

The specialty sets look amazing, and are probably some of the best sets we've gotten since the 90's. The new turntable looks pretty neat, and the coal tipper can be used to recreate a story where a certain green caterpillar with red stripes was pushed onto the tipper. The quality and added amounts of wood is going to be a big drive, and explains the higher price. The Logan character is still a mystery, and I figure he will be book-only due to the way he is illustrated and how he looks overall. Great set nonetheless. I look forward to your reviews on the other 3 sets.

This set looks nice. The spinning track is a cool feature and I'm glad that theres not that much plastic by the looks of it then what the usual sets look like. Great video and a good start to remembering the classics!

Cool Set
I think this is great for TWR getting more wood products and less plastic. New characters attract more kids and us too bye TWR because of the new stories of that could be made! Endless story telling with this set i love it all because of the brand new items and of course Logan but my favorite part is probably the mini knapford station!
also mattel really is improvingthe engines' looks really well detailed as like if he was really working with coal. Good job Mattel 👍😊😉

Logan looks awesome! Wooden Railway going back to more wood is a smart decision (even though I haven't picked up a set / destination for years, just the engines). Maybe Logan will be a storybook only character for a limited time and then when he becomes more popular, he might show up in the TV show. Great Review!
I'm entering. I think this release really shows that Mattel wants to improve Thomas Wooden Railway. Some of these piece are truly unique and well detailed. The price is a little high but all around it's an awesome release. Awesome review.
Lol forgot about the giveaway! Okay so It's made mostly of wood, and the fact of including a Gordon!, and that new character Logan! Is rotally cool! I would love to have the set because of them and the turntable! But it's too pricy! I would be glad to have the Logan with book! When I saw all of these new sets, I wasn't that impressed. Until I started seeing some of the detailed pictures. These sets actually look interesting! Also, WOOD!!! Thomas Wooden railway will never be the same as the early years, but I'm seeing the potential for improvement.

The set looks cool, I am a little sad Logan won't be in the show as I happen to share his name. I am happy to hear that fisher prices wants to return the quality of these sets to their original state. But, as far as only certian shops getting certian sets, I think all shops should get the same products for the same price. Looking forward to more reviews! :)

I've been waiting on the Logan release as I have a little Thomas obsessed boy at home - called Logan! I think this will be a great product for Christmas but I'm sad to hear it's so exclusive!

I find this to be nice how seeing lots of wood. But the price bites those who wanting this item. But im excited to see what they do in the future.

My brothers birthday is coming up in August and He's been nagging me to get the set but I can't because I don't live in the USA. I told him I couldn't get it but he's sad because he said he loves his looks (basis). It would be a great present for him :)
I love the set! I am just starting to collect the Wooden railway line, and I have the pirate ship figure 8 set. I am glad that mattel decided to produce better quality sets, you can see the change in the Logan and the big blue engines set. I love your videos, keep up the GREAT work! :) :D

I like this set. I love the Coal Loader, and Logan looks really nice! I think these Limited Edition Sets are really nice, although, they are expensive, but I think they are worth it. :)

what i really think of this release along with the other 3, its the clever way for TWR collectors to buy the wooden railway item and the book at the same time. so, my brother is a big thomas fan and i was hoping i could give it to him as a good luck in college present.

I think that this is a good idea! Although I am worried that I will not be near any of these 20 stores, it seems that the intentions of them being limited are good, and I look forward to the Wooden Railway improving its quality and returning to its original greatness.

i think that this set is cool and that it is good that in the set there is a grey turntable like in the railway series because when the engines are usually pulling coaches they travel at the end of the line and spin around to push the passengers back in the begining. I mean it is also good that mattel is allowing books in the set because now whoever buys the set can find out more of the characters and what the point of the set is or can be used for, like the liitle cards and the discriptions in the first sets of wooden railway thomas and friends
The idea of mattel mixing books and wooden railway sets is a great idea. It seems to me that Mattell are trying to get kids to put down the Ipads and kindles and actually read a book. Great idea. :) P.S Jlouvier I love your vids. I look foreward to the next installment. :)

Wow, a giveaway! I probably won't win anyway but here is what I think. I think they should lower the prices, make Logan a character on the TV Show and they should just make him a cool character and no one will hate him. I actually didn't like the way he looked when I saw him on the Thomas website but now looking at his wooden railway face he seems "less creepier". I don't know I guess he just looked creepy lol. Anyway, I LOVE your videos and can't wait to see more. Thanks for reading this jlouvier!

When it comes to the Logan and the Big Blue Engines set and book pack, I too am pleased that the Thomas Wooden Railway is returning back to the good ol' days of the brand and making everything primarily out of high-quality wood instead of being entirely plastic. It looks like they're finally listening to the consumers and the specialty retailers.
As for the idea of Mattel offering limited releases of the Sodor Story Collection, I think it's definitely a good thing for both Mattel and the retailers that are doubting the integrity and future of the Thomas Wooden Railway. It looks like Mattel really wants to help the retailers that are doing poorly in the sales of the Wooden Railway brand and the Thomas franchise itself in any way that they can. If that's not the sign of a company that wants our little blue tank engine to truly rise to stardom once again, then I don't know what is.

WOW that was an impressive set (and video I may add) it was in afar one of the best I have seen but I would really like to know Logan's story I don't understand the character yet (well of course not) and I really do like the idea of using WOOD now instead of plastic for these exclusive sets but it would be nice for non-exclusive sets to have less plastic as well but I guess that might be dreaming now. I really do think having these exclusive sets is actively a good thing it might be hard to get a hold of but defiantly adds more fun time for collects (lol) anyway overall this set was amazing, i like the exclusive sets and I love the way Logan looks. I would of liked the set to be cheaper though but I guess they need to get money out of it.
I'm Entering. I Think this might be a bit of a challenge to collect all of these :^/

This video is great, first of all, what i like in this video, is that book pack, i never seen this product, and i never readed this book. If you're a fan of reading books, i would say this is recomended.
