I agree I have been a guitar player my whole life, now at 63 I am learning piano and it has helped my guitar playing and over all musicianship tremendously.

I second this. The way I'm able to deconstruct chords now, is such a different feeling and I'm writing crazy better songs because of it.

Great video! I have found some time in my busy life with work and kids to start learning piano. This was 3 years ago when I was 41 and now I just found your channel for more amazing tips and tutorials. I did not know anything about music and playing the piano has changed that. Now I know a little the basics and I really enjoy playing a couple of songs I really like. Still learning. Thanks for sharing your passion and lessons. All the best!

Thanks Pierre! I came over from Rick Beato's perfect pitch video. I have played guitar for 40+ years and would say that I have very good relative pitch. I learn mostly by listening, but I also can read music. This year I am going to challenge myself and learn piano. Looking forward to picking up some helpful lessons from you, I am trying to absorb from all possible sources.

    41. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 16. In high school I tried a music reading class to learn piano but hated it and just learned Beatles songs by ear and got and got an F. I love your vibe and just dusted off my keyboard. Thank you.

Thank you! I have been setting knobs and programming sounds for about 40 years with synths, which is a different skill set, but didn't delve a lot into playing a piano. I have some of the rudiments down for notes and chords, and play by ear at times. I wish I had learned piano at an early age. I played a slide trombone when I was in grade school, but didn't stay with it very long, and I really didn't have access to a piano. I was reading music at that time when playing the trombone, however; lost that when I let it go. I'm definitely in agreement with you, piano is an important skill. I just need to find the time. Thanks for this motivational video. Thumbs up!

This is all VERY generous of you. Keep going…but I have a suggestion. Maybe it only comes to mind because I obsessively listened to new-to-me Yebba songs last night for many hours and then just saw your ear at work on Beato’s channel but maybe not. Pianists suffer from having too many fingers, too many available notes, and too many options available all the time so playing transcriptions of amazing singers can be a way to load in habits of restraint and nuance that otherwise don’t get the attention they deserve. Yebba is, I mean, you know, right, crazy skilled and deeply honest as an artist and person. I don’t really play piano but if you could spread some of what she has going on into the piano world then I just know the world will become an even better place. (The Music of Lyle Mays book is a wonderful gift to the generations.)

I’ve been a guitar player for ~25 years and now I’m learning piano. I’m about a year in and from what I’ve been told, I play piano like a guitar player. As someone with discipline in multiple instruments, what approach would you recommend so I don’t concrete myself to bad habits moving forward.

The best approach is to build a solid foundation of good technique so that learning what you love is fun. A healthy practice routine should incorporate a scale with correct fingerings and relaxed posture, some chord practice, an exercise (Such as Hanon) and of course songs that you love. You don’t have to do boring exercises all day, just incorporate a few of them into the routine!
