Great video. Thanks for sharing your story
Great video. Genius pick to put Babylon Sisters at #1. I would have also added Bob James somewhere in this list - Angela is epic.. The other that I would add would be Herbie Hancock’s Tell me a Bedtime Story. It’s a masterpiece. Please keep making more videos with the Rhodes ! Love your enthusiasm and talent.
Check out the intro on the song, “Not Like This” from the “Jarreau” album. Yes, it’s the “E” Rhoades, but the intro, in fact, the entire song, is one of the best recordings and playing and chord progression songs I’ve ever heard in my life.
I am a true admirer of David Foster's work, and to me the DX7 is still today a Hard Habit to Break.
Knowing that Sir Elton John was hooked to his RD-1000, I have some doubts it was the venerable DX-7 that was used on Sacrifice's intro track.
excelente!
People who "hate" the DX7 are either not "80's kids" or hated the 80's, or don't know how to create other great sounds other than the cliché sounds. I on the other hand am PROUDLY an 80's kid, and that E. Piano is "home" to me, it's in my "DNA". I adore the 80's and the "sound of the 80's", and always will
Played "Hard Habit To Break" for my oldest son yesterday. Nice to see it in first place. It is an “amazing work of art” 😍. Maybe Foster's best production ever (obviously very "overproduced" but who doesn't love that sometimes 😅).
I have to admit, I think the first time I saw one of these, I know I wanted to get one! I ended up buying a Roland E-15, and that was a pretty darn good keyboard. I had a lot of fun with it, and I do regret having to sell it. :( Another keyboard I had a lot of fun playing around with, was a Korg SAS 20. It was a rather interesting keyboard, and I would have fought one if I had the chance ...
Excellent!
Not gonna lie, probably the first time I see a cover where the high arpeggio sounds good and in time. ✌️
Dancing in the Moonlight
I'm a sax player but I have one of the old vintage DX7's and I love the sounds in it. Especially the EP sound.
Babe - Styx. I Can't Tell You Why - Eagles.
You definitely cannot use it like you'd use a Rhodes, but it absolutely has a place in the music of the '80s and '90s. Definitely brings back nostalgic feelings for me. I like it, and always have.
I immediately thought of Stevie Wonder. Great choices and anyone posting negative comment should get over themselves 🤷🏽♂️
Screw the Doogie Howser EP and Taco Bell machine. The only memorable sounds this paperweight got right for me were the bass sounds for Money For Nothing and Danger Zone.
Great video! Makes me wanna get a Rhodes. Yes! Please do make a video on Minute By Minute. Would love to see that. 😁
Thanks for watching! I did the “Minute by Minute” video recently, you’ll find it on my channel.
Bloody well right - Supertramp
Babylon Sisters is my fave 100%.
Your tutorials are great. While we are on the subject of Steely Dan, any chance you could do a tutorial on Aja? Thanks.
Thank you so much Pierre. I knew that Jarret was so good. But I didnt know, I could appreciate the beauty of his interpretations, but didnt know what is it. Now its perfect! Thanks again!!
I hear a Rhodes and I immediately think of Donny Hathaway. Love the intro to 'Someday we'll all be free'.
Sales revenue from the revolutionary DX-7 allowed Yamaha to fund the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University. 30 years of research generated new patents that Yamaha incorporated into its synthesizers.
Great list...I wanted to drum along during all of them especially the Doobies and Steely Dan.
Nice work
Who is everybody and what's not like? It may be called by different names..pwn, awm, awm2, etc. But this became the essence of most of the tone engines used in contemporary synths today. Great technology never dies. It simply reinvents. One of the most beautiful, timbral instruments ever created. My DX7 IIFD gets used in my studio today. Ranting me, it angers me easily it is for modern musicians, worse off tone deaf listeners choose to discard greatness because they are unable to perceive greatness. Sometimes the next big thing is not the next best thing. 😮
... And just for clarity's sake, Yamaha FM sound engine was the basis for a lot of the sound technology that everybody use later on. It started the evolution. 😊
Hmm, begs the question, Steely Dan or Steeleye Span....😂😂
Hi Pierre, literally 3 minutes into the video and I Hit the subscribe button. I really like you presentation style. Looking forward to learning this. thanks Mark :o)
Hard AF list to create. But you killed. From Chick and Herbie to Foster and Fagan! The next 10 or 20 are equally as good, no doubt. Do another, Pierre 🙏🏽
Hi all! I’ve gotten a ton of comments about “Bloody Well Right” … It’s not on the list because that was played on a Wurlitzer, not a Rhodes piano :)
Ready for a top 10 Wurli video!
I agree with most of your list ... but I'm disappointed that you didn't include "Bloody well right" by Supertramp ..the intro must be at least 2 minutes of amazing Rhodes piano work ... and you didn't include it !!!! (Shame !)
Sorry, my bad ... the intro is only 50 seconds ... but it's still awesome and still ... (shame!)
“Bloody Well Right” is a Wurlitzer, NOT a Rhodes. Big difference! :) check the comments section, so many people said the same thing! Glad to see there are a lot of Supertramp fans because I LOVE that song.
@@pierrejpiscitelli You're right ... in fact "You're Bloody Well Right" ... I obviously don't know the diff. between a Rhodes and a Wurlitzer ...
Passionné par Keith Jarrett,et jouant très modestement certains de ces morceaux, bien content d'apprendre par cette vidéo,très explicite !! concernant la technicité de ce génie du piano !! Merci ❤,🎹🇨🇵
Keyboardists loved the DX7 because it only cost $1,500 (as opposed to the $5k+ you'd dish out for an analog synthesizer), and it could convincingly reproduce the sound of a piano and other acoustic instruments, which you couldn't really get from an analog synth. But it was difficult to program, so most people only used the unaltered presets, which we all got tired of hearing.
Jolly Roger Bay - Super Mario 64
Pretty sure it was a DX7 doing the base line in Take My Breath Away.
I love the DX7. I don't know why so many people hate the sound.
Bonjour Pierre - Very good explanation ! Thanks you very much for sharing it ! Have a great joy of creating in music and life ! Serge
As a kid, upon listening the e.piano sound, I think of a piano with glass strings/tines inside. XD
What to hate about it? That's a beautiful sound, I'm totally 80's myself and what I hate it's what has been released nowadays. The DX 7 made its legacy with great music that empowered that great decade.
You forgot "nothings gonna change my love for you" by George Benson
Thanks!
Thank you!!
I'm guitarist and I felt in love with Yamaha DX7 when I saw it for the first time being played for a bandmate. The tones are iconic.
I have never seen a better lesson in my life for any instrument. I'm going to throw a request out there which is way off the wall for your consideration. Do the solo Bill Murray plays in Groundhog Day. It's complex enough to be interesting.
japanise sinth and no japanise music? breath of fire maybe?
I love all these songs... DX7 and DX5 are awesome... old is gold.
Apologies for them comments ...oops 😊
Give it to Trent Reznor
I was wondering if Sheriff -"When I'm with you" uses this synth. To me it sounds quite identical
Thank you so much for this, and thank you for doing the whole song!
