- Ever wonder where the whole notion of capturing death even came from? It's not exactly widespread, but it sure seems to show up a lot more than one might expect. Well, worry no longer! Turns out it's all because the ancient king Sisyphus had a fantastic (terrible) idea that worked out great (badly) for everyone involved.

I love the version where Sisyphus doesn't even *have* to push the boulder. Only, he's been told that successfully getting the boulder to the top will get him out of Hades... and so he can't stop trying.
See I think that's intended but too many folks just simplify it.

There's a similar punishment elsewhere in Greek Mythology--49 of the 50 daughters of Danaus (collectively called the "Danaides") murdered their husbands on their father's orders. Their punishment in Tartarus is to fill a bath that they can bathe in to cleanse their sin...but the bath is constantly leaking, so no matter how much they fill it, it'll never be full.
In other versions, the Danaides have a slightly more merciful punishment--the tub isn't leaking, but the bowls they have to use to fill it up are like sieves. They _can_ still fill it and eventually bathe in it to wash away their crime, but it will take a very, _very_ long time for them to do so.
Finally, the answer to why the gods never just kill anyone in these myths! The one time they try, it goes horribly, horribly wrong.
I blame Zeus. Couldn't the guy just chuck a lightning bolt at Sisyphus and be done with it? XD

Well, they did with Capaneus, one of the seven agains Thebes. Once he raised at the top of the walls of Thebes he shouted that Zeus himself could not stop him from invading it. At that point Zeus struck and killed Capaneus with a thunderbolt.
I love how Hades is just sorta cynically leering at Sisyphus in spite of Persephone and Thanatos's rage like "I don't even have to be mad, these two can do it for me."
Hades: "Get angry? Why would I do that? I am King of the Underworld, I have people to do that for me. Also, you angered my wife and there is no way in here I can match what she is about to do to you."
Hades:”Don’t get mad. Get even.”
Yeah, Hades is just like "Oh, you have SEVERELY underestimated who the scary one is in this relationship, my good bitch."

Hades is a mild mannered devoted husband, and this dude took advantage of Persephone's kind heart. Really I'm sure the punishment dished out was Hades' idea cause Persephone....well....she was kind but also far less merciful.

Hades looks so sad and worried when Thanatos is missing. It's cute.

I feel if Hades had been to one to get captured, as stated in that other version, then Persephone would've NEVER let Sisyphus go.
No one messes with her husband.
In one of the Hades versions, all of the gods confronted Sisyphus and collectively threatened to ruin his life in every possible way if he didn’t let Hades go. This obviously included Persephone, but I could totally see her leading the charge and that particular threat being her idea. 😉

- He pissed off Persephone (whose name literally means 'bringer of death') by tricking her,
- And he pissed off Hades (the KING of the Underworld) by cheating death, the one thing Hades absolutely despises.

He exploited her sympathy and lied to her. Plus, she was more recently offended than Hades and Thanatos; so, the outrage was fresher and thus, the retribution was served hotter.

In another interpretation he also pissed off Zeus for ratting on one o of his affairs to her River god father in exchange for divine favors

I heard that Hermes, as the God of Cunning, was sent to retrieve Sisyphus, being that Hermes was 'untrickable'. And then, Hermes simply grabs him by the ankle and drags him down to the Underworld; one of Hermes' roles is that of a Psychopomp.

yeah thats the one i first read, but it included the fact that earlier thanatos was knocked out cold then sisyphus trapped him in the trunk, so hermes wore a helmet to prevent the same thing happening to him

I believe the rock punishment was Hades' idea. Since Thanatos could have given him something like Prometheus, and Persephone; you can only imagine. Lesson, if you piss off someone in the Underworld, better hope it was Hades.

In some cases, she CHOSE to stay/rule there. So she would be the worst person to piss off.

I really love her depiction's of Thanatos, Hades, and Persephone.
I can just imagine Hades, Persephone and Thanatos discussing Sisyphus's punishment, Hades then says something like. "He made my wife look foolish so now he will look foolish." And Persephone is so touched, she snuggles up to Hades then Thanatos turns to the camera office style looking annoyed being the third wheel to the two lovebirds.

Let this be a lesson, never piss off a woman, they quite scary.
Persephone means “Bringer of Death” because in one version of the Hades and Persephone get hitched myth, Persephone wanders into the Underworld because Hades opened a door to go talk to her and gets distracted. She enters, is finally free of her overprotective mother, and refuses to leave. Demeter misinterprets this, thinking that Hades kidnapped her and killing loads of people in rage. Zeus finds it too hilarious to interfere. Hades panics and is desperate to persuade Persephone to go calm down her mom. Persephone eats some pomegranate as a “but I dont WANNA go talk to my mom” and Hades brings the problem to Zeus. Finally it’s settled that Persephone spends half the year with her overprotective mother and half of it with her husband that just wanted to woo a girl and had to renovate his kingdom because of her mom.
What was the point of telling this story?

But guess that just isn't how it works
Well, yes, but I was referring to how it is ultimately Hades who has the final say in where souls end up going. You piss him off, and there's no helping you once you die. While getting on Persephone or Thanatos's bad side is also not good for you, as gods are dangerous and tend to punish offenders unproportionally to the offense, they only have some sway in where your soul goes.

Getting old makes it harder to keep running away from death when your entire body is worn down and saggy with age, so it makes sense to me why Thanatos would wait until he is physically unable to do anything to stop him. Though I would argue that it would've made even more sense if Thanatos just took Sisyphus in his sleep to start with.

Thanatos is a pure example of the trope ‘Dark is not Evil’. He’s just a goth grimm reaper deity doing his job, and is actually quite chill; unless someone pisses him off like Sisyphus did.
Persephone is be aware of the nice ones trope, sweet and compassionate but when someone pisses her off enough she's terrifying

The Stephen fry version of this myth has sisyphus trick thanatos into putting the chains on in the classic "i don't believe the thing works like you say it does" bugs bunny maneuver.
Thanatos, quite insulted that a mortal would dare to challenge the genius of inescapable chains, promptly goes full elmer fudd, puts on chains, proclaims "SEE THEY DO WORK YOU PATHETIC MORTAL" to which sisyphus replies "jolly good sir, now take them off" after which the dim light bulb in thanatos' head finally clicks "....oh"

I've been playing Hades recently, and I was curious about what happened between Thanatos and Sisyphus since Thanatos still seemed to hold a grudge. This explains a lot.

You have to feel bad for Thanatos lmao. Poor guy is hated by basically everyone because he's Death (peaceful death, even!). And he was outsmarted by mortals twice. He's basically a laughingstock.
Still he had a better time than Ares. Seriously, sometimes mortals were able to (Temporarily) outsmart gods, but he was the only one who was pshysically subdued by mortals; not to mention humiliated quite a lot.

For the most part, no. Ares was never very popular in terms of worship and had very few temples dedicated to him.
The god was, more often than not, associated with the region of Thrace, filled with war-like tribes who (at least, allegedly) practiced human sacrifice. The region was believed to be Ares’ birthplace, and many of the native tribes claimed descent from him.

A version of the story I read has Thanatos take pity on him and _show_ him how he'd be chained up, only to be locked up. So, I guess Thanatos could be _less_ clever.

Absurdism being basically OP's comment and the opposite of nihilism: everything sucks ass, life is a coincidence and meaningless and ephemeral, so we should just do the best we can to help others and _create_ meaning through our relationship to the world around us.

Zeus is technically the youngest if you go by order born, but everyone seems to count his siblings getting thrown up by Big Daddy C as a kind of “second birth”, so since Hades who’s actually the eldest born got swallowed first, he’s the last one to get chucked up, making him the youngest.

Honestly I love how when Zeus thinks up some horrible eternal punishment it's "strap this guy to a flaming wheel for all eternity" or "you get to have your liver eaten every day" but Hades opts for the more mundane stuff like "roll this boulder up a hill" or "sit on a bench and think about what you've done."
To be fair Sisyphus is also meant to be whipped by the furies whenever they find the time.

Actually there are two versions of how Melinoe was created, one was Oral and has Hades as the father and the other Zeus. This happens so often when talking about Hades having kids, that there is a theory that some one just retconed the myths when writing them down. The story of Minthe isn't like that, in one she's a nymph that thinks herself better than Persephone and tries to seduces Hades, this is what gets her killed. "She was dazzled by Hades and was about to seduce him had Queen Persephone not intervened and metamorphosed Minthe."
Also, given how the myth of Adonis goes it looks like when it says "share" it was more child custody and not lover, Aphrodite gave Persephone NEW BORN Adonis to look over and she refused to return him. (At this point Persephone wasn't referenced having a child of her own yet.)

I prefer to think that Sisyphus in Hades was punished for humiliating Zeus like he was in the version I read. His kingdom was going through a drought, so in exchange for a spring he told a local river god where his daughter (who'd been abducted by Zeus) was. The river god was so furious that he chased Zeus all the way back to Mount Olympus, who had Sisyphus killed in retaliation.
So how did Sisyphus think he was going stab people when he litterally trapped death itself inside a box? Good job Sisyphus, you managed to get on the bad side of the god of the underworld and also destroy your source of income at the same time. Not a great plan.

My favorite interpretation of Sisyphus' punishment is that Hades promised to let Sisyphus return to life again if he can get the boulder to the top. It explains why he keeps doing it, even though he keeps failing: if he can just get it to work _one time_, he can cheat death once more.
I don't know if that's just one variation or if it's something I made up, but... it's interesting, I think.

It would explain why he keeps doing it. That was something I never really got. What would happen if he just didn't do his punishment? Presumably something worse, but I never heard anything about what that worse might be.
My guess is that flaming spears get shoved places, but since he's already dead, he just kinda suffers and occasionally gets jabbed with a few more until he goes back to pushing the rock. Of course, I have no evidence for this, but if I were the god of the underworld, that'd be my go to for lazy death cheaters. Of course, if that didn't work, I could tack on something a bit Promethean and have a fury burn and devour every inch of his skin over and over again, and if that didn't work, I'd take a cue from Tokyo Ghoul and add having his arms and legs getting infinitely ripped off to the mix, and if THAT didn't work... well... fuck dude, it's just a rock. Don't be such a little putto!
Andrew Weber I dunno... that punishment feels a little too hopeful to be a good punishment. The tone of "endless suffering" isn't quite there if he feels like he could succeed.

In German language, we actually call something especially tedious, pointless or difficult a "Sisyphus Job" because of this story! Most often the word is used for sorting stuff or working with incredibly small, finicky things, but the main idea is "This is gonna take FOREVER and is way too difficult to begin with!"
In polish there is an idea of a Sisyphus job .
English has the word "Sysiphian" to describe this sort of thing. Not exactly common, though. I've only seen it written once or twice and only knew what it meant because of the story.

Watching this after playing Hades (the game bu Supergiant) is hilarious. May we have an OSPlays of Hades? I think you'll love their interpretation of Greek Mythology, though it does take a lot of runs to get all the story bits. Totally worth it in my opinion, though:)

Be Warned the following is wordy to the extreme:
The version of the tale I read in more detail. So Zeus goes off to have an affair with a kidnapped princess (like that's never happened before). Her father the king is desperate and Sisyphus is famous for being a clever clog. He points out where they are and Zeus is all like "Awh hell naw dog you did not rat me out".
So he gets Hades to send Thanatos to collect him. Like in red telling hades gives him shackles and Sisyphus admires them. But he tricks thantos into putting them onto himself. Most likely by saying "They look nice but I bet they're weak, I bet even you can get out of them". So Thanatos puts them on and is paralyzed as that's what they do. Like in red's telling he traps Thanatos in a trunk/chest/ container of some kind. Then gets out of dodge with his wife, (second wife as he married his niece first but that's a whole other story). Like red's telling, he tells his wife don't do any funeral stuff when they finally take me (knowing full well he would die the moment they got death out).
So he dies, and his wife doesn't do any funeral stuff. When in the underworld he goes to Persephone and convinces her to let him go back for the expressed purpose of being a dick to his wife for not doing a funeral with the added caveat that he'd outlive her as (surely the woman he loves would hate him outliving her).
So he returns to life rejuvenated and lives happily ever after with his wife to a ripe old age. (Part of Greek mythology is one god can't overrule the ruling of another god so since Persephone said he would live longer than his wife well they couldn't kill him right away) When he died for the second time, he is given the offer. Go to Elysium and be happy forever (basically heaven) or you can return to life and be immortal but you have to get that rock to the top of that hill right over there. The tale basically doesn't be a smartass with cosmically powerful deities.

You know, this has to be one of the only Greek myths that doesn't seems to depict the gods as petty, unjust or vindictive in some way or another. One could even say that their actions were pretty justifiable.

In the version I read, the girl was the daughter of a river god and when Sisyphus told him he ran after Zeus who was forced to run back to Olympus with his tail between his legs.
Maybe this is why the Greek gods don’t straight up kill people in their stories.
