"Anything you can do, I can do better." When Irving Berlin first wrote those lyrics for the 1946 Broadway musical "Annie Get Your Gun," he perhaps didn't realize how much longevity the sentiment would have. Often used as a musical representation of the battle of the sexes, perhaps more generally as a confident underdog taking on a more established figure, the words continue to ring true and reflective of situations we still see to this day. Of all situations we could compare it to in modern times, it would be difficult to find a rivalry more connected to that sentiment than that of Mario vs May. At first glance, May might seem oblivious to the monolithic legend she dares to challenge. Mario is a beloved hero and character that has spanned generations, and despite his representation as a plumber with lots of confidence yet few words, he remains a beacon of positivity and fun in a medium that finds itself pushed further into mature themes and gray characters every year. May, despite her longevity as a character in the new millenium, seems much more naive and crass in comparison, but those are surface level comparisons that fail to reveal the true challenge she presents to a perennial icon. At first glance, it may seem unwise to compare these characters in any way, but a deeper exploration brings us closer to the truth. While we know Mario as a loveable hero, we often forget his bread and butter and how he keeps the lights on - plumbing. Plumbers seek to control water in domesticated spaces, making it bend to the human hand at their whim. However, May respects the wild and uncontrollable nature of the sea, something that cannot be tamed by human will nor faucet. And when we see May materialize a dolphin from thin air and ride it across chasms that seemingly Mario could only traverse prior to that point, it's not a young girl's whimsical adventure. It's a message. The sea is coming for revenge, to free itself of those who seek to contain it. In essence, she seeks not just to challenge him as a hero, but to end his career. Thus, we find May is not just a clueless ingenue out of her depth against a goliath of the industry. Further, May is not looking to replace Mario as the hero; nay, it becomes clearer that she wants to operate as an anti-hero against the unflappable poster child. Perhaps it's to say that Mario's lack of gray in a virtual world brimming with it makes him an outlier without the safety he has been coddled by. Without much else to currently expand our case, May remains somewhat of an enigma despite what appears to be an outright threat to a longstanding, family-friendly darling. Ultimately, where Mario fits perfectly in the box of what we consider an outright hero, May evades containment, without definition. Or, in her words, no dictionary.
For those asking about the ending song, it's May's theme from Guilty Gear Xrd, Starry Story. I recommend to check out the rest of May's themes which sound similar along with the entire Guilty Gear soundtrack, they are all bangers.
