You can have a maximum of 8 stars on the title screen at which point on your 9th playthrough, you will be able to access Worlds A to D after beating World 8 (you won't ever loose the stars , so you can always retry). Also, warping does not prohibit you from gaining stars and accessing Worlds A-D (while having the 8 stars). There's also a World 9, which can only be accessed after beating World 8 AND not using warp pipes at all in doing so. If you didn't warp and have 8 stars then you will first access World 9, then Worlds A-D.

As someone who knew about this for years, any time I hear someone say that SMB1 has no continues, it annoys me way more than it should because that isn't true at all; I don't understand why Nintendo would make something as invaluable as continues a secret easter egg of sorts, but since this was 1985, when most games didn't have continues at all, I guess they didn't know better.

Mario 1 does have checkpoints! Hold "Select" while pressing Continue and it starts you on stage 1 of the world you died in. Mario 2 just made the system not asininely stupid and made the continue do that by default.

Mario 1 does have checkpoints! Hold "Select" while pressing Continue and it starts you on stage 1 of the world you died in. Mario 2 just made the system not asininely stupid and made the continue do that by default.

The levels were probably made to challenge older players however i believe the game was a bit too harsh. I'm here after the devastating review on Super Mario 2 that Dunkey released in 2021. This is a horrible way to start off my year and you can clearly tell that Dunkey loved this game the entire playthrough. I don't know what made him say such atrocities to his loyal SMB2 fans that have bought "SMB2 GOTY" merch every year since this video but I am currently tweeting this footage to him in hopes of him changing his mind. I remember as a kid when Mario all stars came out I had beaten Mario 1,2, 3, and world. Mario was old hat and wasn't super hard to beat. Then I played "lost levels" which is the real Mario 2 and it shattered my young soul. I eventually powered through it but fuck was it hard. Don't get me started on the second play through levels
