Why Artemisias Are Important for Health

- Most of the artemisias are medicinal. They have been used for thousands of years by herbalists from East Asia and Siberia to Europe and North America. The Greek physicians more than 2,500 years ago noted their useful bitter qualities and how the artemisias can be important for good health. Bitter herbs like artemisia kick-start the digestive system, stimulate the liver, and boost the immune system. Carmen Lynde, a practicing medical herbalist with a full-time herbal clinic in Toronto, explains why we may need to be taking bitter artemisias like wormwood, santonica and mugwort, as our lives become more sedentary and our body's systems become sluggish. Besides running a busy practice, Carmen is creator of Vervain.ca, an organic plant-based skincare line made by hand in small batches. She also serves as Richters online medical herbs expert. This seminar was presented as part of the annual Herb Day celebration at Richters on May 4, 2014.

This was made 7 years ago. Excellent information, but would be better now that artemisia is known to have important antiviral and anticancer properties, also against C19.
C19 has never been isolated. Wake up.

Thank You.
This information needs to be known to all humans....
@Allan Ivan it works, look at how low African and Chinese (most Asian) countries’ Covid stats are
It really does. Time to get my family and friends onto this!
They want to hide this, it would mean mass vaccination is unnecessary
I watched this with a bloated belly that has been hurting me for days. I ran to my fridge and drank some Swedish bitters and finally felt better in about 20 min. Thank you so much for this. soooo interesting about having to ACTUALLY taste the bitters.
Had the corona virus in 2020 took some artemisia annua tea and 3 day later all symptoms were gone all gone ...
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Like Artemisia annua, the African herb Cryptolepis is a potent anti-malarial also, and there is a clinical trial under way to test its possible effectiveness against Covid. Is there a connection between malaria and Covid? It's hard to see how there could be because the two are caused by very different pathogens; but we may yet be surprised.
Excellent talk. Thank you. I've searched for this to relisten. Great content.
I chew a piece of calamus root daily for digestion and at first it tasted really badly bitter to me, but now I am getting used to it and it tastes maybe not like candy, but not too bad. Another great bitter is to blend whole lemon in a smoothie (skin, seeds, pith and all.) I do mix it with banana for better taste.
So informative despite repetitiveness in the presentation.
Information about these herbs are still sparce these days glad to have found this gem. The one on lacto fermentation ia another gem!
Thank you for your kind information mam,I am from Kathmandu, Nepal. I am a farmer that farming artimesia.
sorry for my mistake spelling artemisia
Really informative ..and I have been working with herbs for many years. Thanks!
Great tutorial, I love my bitters, I grew up with them from chocolate to riddichio or vise versa, also wild weeds like dandelions, chicory ect., and just made my own tincture bitter, can't wait to try it.

She's a very photogenic speaker and informative to boot. No longer will my yard's mugwort end up in the compost bin where only worms enjoy the bitters. Thanks. A chart showed throughout comparing wormwood, mugwort and others would have put the icing on the cake for me.
Is mugwort and sweet wormwood the same plant? I understanding is they are related but not identical.
@@almac9203 mugwort is Artemisia vulgaris while sweet wormwood is Artemisia annua. Are they close enough to contain similar useful constituents? idk The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants sheds no light on the differences. Mugwort does not have its own entry but does appear in other Artemisia spp. articles. For instance, Artemisia mexicana is said to be a subspecies of the North American western mugwort and some botanists believe Artemisia mexicana is a variety or subspecies of Artemisia absinthium and more potently psychoactive than absinthium.
@@almac9203 Wormwood is a species of mugwort.
@@AngeloJimenez8 in South Africa you get another 2 species of Artemisia , A Afra and A Abrotanum and both have been used for many years .

Her point of starting with bitter as a healing component is extremely powerful, haritaki (king of herbs) is very bitter , amazing for real
I've used haritaki but wormwood tops it for bitter herbs in my experience - just a tiny pinch for tea goes a very long way. At least haritaki has a sweet aftertaste when washed down with water.
Neem is the bitterest herb ive tasted. Its also a good in conjunction with wormwood for parasite cleanse and healing of stomach. Ive had. Had h.pylori infection and its worked for me.
Did it help your hood to stand a bit more erect?
Which one helped your H. Pylori? Any other benefits, my dad had a bout with h. Pylori and I would like to make him use some of this tea.

Great talk, I enjoyed it. However Sagebrush is not used for smudge by FIrst Nations as far as I know, just the other sages. Mainly the single stem Prairies Sage. Which on did you mean?
Sagebrush has its origins from Russia.
I buy dried wormwood at mexican stores on the spices section, how should i use it internally?
You can either bring it to a boil then simmer for 5 minutes and drink
Or...you can put the powder into empty gelatin capsules and swallow
Take a few at a time 2 or 3 times a day for a week or 2
I love wormwood, it helps with my anxiety and insomnia. I drink it in a tea. Is it okay to consume daily?
We would be cautious about long term use of wormwood as a daily tea. Some varieties contain small amounts of thujone which has been blamed for certain effects of long term use of absinthe, the alcoholic liquor made with wormwood extracts. But whether in fact thujone in absinthe is problem is controversial among scientists: some believe it has nothing to do with absinthe's effects because there is too little thujone in wormwood to have any real effect. We know that wormwood has been used in medicine and in alcoholic drinks for more than a thousand years and that is, we believe, powerful evidence that it is safe to use; because if it weren't mankind would have turned away from it long ago. For now, we suggest that wormwood be used on an occasional basis, perhaps a few days or weeks at a time to help with your anxiety or insomnia.
@@richtersherbs apparently the thujone breaks down during the drying process so if dried wormwood is consumed this isn't an issue, only if consuming the fresh herb?
How about feverfew ?
Why is wormwood associated with the winged destroyer
I have these big white flowers that are growing in my back yard and they look like trumpets. My friend told me they are called datura. Is it medicinal??
It is deadly toxic to humans and most pets..although used as medicine in Peru they call it To'e.
Question you say not to take them for more than four or five weeks at a time. So after you've stopped taking them how long until you can start taking them again?
There is no research on this question and no specific recommendation that we are aware of, unfortunately. For now we believe it is best to err on the side of caution and use artemisia as part of a short-term treatment modality.
@@richtersherbs I was curious because I was thinking about making up a tincture for my niece to deal with PMS. But PMS is kind of a permanent lingering condition. So I was looking for something that can be taken regularly. I was thinking black cohosh and cramp bark.

He’s not trying to take over; just saying hello. After all, no Jesus, no Artemisia and definitely no sweetness in the world 😊
Is it anything like rue?
Rue is from a completely different plant family, and it has quite different properties.

no milk!

UHH.....lymph fluid never..ever leaks into the blood.....this is impossible.....but overall a good informative presentation....
What do you think happens when you have completely backed up lymph. Where does it go? Bodied still produce waste and these toxins build up and eventually release toxins into nearby tissues and thus the blood.
will spraying wormwood help keep roaches away?
While many artemisias are known to repel or kill a broad range of insect pests such as carrot flies, fleas and cabbage moths, they are not known to repel cockroaches. That said, it may be worth trying a spray made with wormwood anyway since the herb has interesting repellent properties. You may also want to try a natural non-herbal product called diatomaceous earth. From direct experience we know that works really well on cockroaches. We sell this product: www.richters.com/Web_store/web_store.cgi?product=XT2140.
Lemon grass would probably work better ..
