This was me a few months ago. I was severely depressed and didn’t get out of bed for months. My hair was completely matted and I was so embarrassed by it that I wouldn’t leave the house and the cycle of depression and embarrassment continued. I finally got the courage to dial up a local salon and tell them the details, they said they understood so I came on down. I told them I didn’t want to trouble them with brushing it and told them they could shave it. They lady told me that she wanted to brush it all out because she could see that deep down I didn’t want it shaved. So there we were, combing and cutting the absolute mess that was my hair. After 1 week we finally got it out and I feel so much better with myself. Depression had taken over my life and it finally felt like I was taking that first step. Sorry for the long story, this came into my recommendations and it hit close to home

What a wonderfully compassionate service you provide! I'm a white girl who 40 years ago was a patient in a mental facility. A much younger (also white) girl was admitted for severe depression and suicide attempts. The staff was going to shave her neglected matted hair and she was terrified. At my insistence, they allowed me to try to save her hair and her dignity. I began by using an entire large bottle of heavy conditioner (the only option available) to comb through the layers before it could even be shampooed. Hours and hours later, her hair and her mood completely transformed! I still have the thank you card from her delighted parents. So yea, I do know first-hand what it means to care for someone in need of a little goodness. Thank you for all that you do to help make this world a better place, one strand at a time.

Your compassion will be remembered by her and the other patients there with you both as an act of love. As a past patient for severe depression, I learned more about recovery through love from fellow patients than I did from the staff. There’s something about receiving acts of kindness from others who understand what you’re going through that heals our hearts more than most every doctor I met ( the nurses I had were actually incredible caring people).

My sister's hair got really matted once, when we were kids. My mom had 5 kids before she was 30, and she was overwhelmed. Sometimes the hair went neglected for both of us. My mom tried to detangle it, but my sister cried and cried. A family friend tried, but shamed my mom and my sis. I told my mom I would do it. It took a long time, and she lost a little hair, but after a haircut, she was so much better, physically and emotionally. You are a blessing to these people.

I remember when I was going through it and my hair was really matted, and super long. I couldn’t even reach the Matt’s to help myself. I hid it however I could. I finally reached out for help from a therapist and she had the nerve to shame me. I was appalled and it certainly didn’t help my mental state. My mom was willing to try and help me. She spent many hours over the course of two days and finally got it all out. Great big hugs to anyone and everyone who suffers inside.

My hair used to matt up like (even when braided) that overnight as a child. I am also very tender-headed. I learned to sleep on satin or silk pillowcases and with my (naturally straight) hair in braids. I oil the ends of my hair and brush with a boar bristle brush before braiding every night as well. It helps the knots slip out as they form. I am so glad that you are very kind and supportive, having matted hair is both embarrassing and physically painful. - clean your environment because it will make you feel much better
      - drink bissap/hibiscus tea : it is full of antioxidants and apparently it fights depression
      - last but definitely not least, workout. It has proven benefic effects on mental health. It does not matter if you can't do a lot at first. It will provide your brain with serotonin and endorphin which will make you feel better.

I saw your videos June last year and got the courage to detangle my hair after it had spiralled into a 1.5year old mat. It was so bad that I could neither see nor feel my scalp back then but your videos gave me hope that it was possible to get my hair back without having to shave it all of. I tried one section and the sheer size of the task broke me! I then spent almost a year trying to save up so I can fly out to you but got hit with an emergency and had to use that money for something else. Fast forward to this morning at 6am with me taking out the final knot after almost 3years with hair depression. I could've cried, I was so happy! It took me 17days and almost a bucket full of shed hair, 3 bruised fingers and two bottles of conditioner but I made it.
Thank you for giving me hope and inspiring me to take back control of my hair and by extention control of my life.
To anyone going through something similar. You can do it, take your time and be kind to yourself. Do it one small section at a go and you'll get there. Tips I learned along the way: use a sturdy rattail comb with firm teeth to comb through the mat more efficiently. Get a medium/large safety pin to use on the small knots. Get a conditioner with a LOT of slip. Use a plastic bag over your head overnight to soften the knots and also restore some moisture and elasticity back into your strands. Get a sharp pair of hair scissors to help you cut through those shedded hairs that form the horizontal strands binding your hair sections together. Lastly be patient, if you get tired or frustrated, take a break and comeback later. You got this!

I struggled with depression and to this day I have bad days with it... having curly hair is not a friend in these times. You think of all the work and the care it needs and you just have no mental capacity to stand in the shower and take a comb through it, wash, rinse, condition, dry.. when getting out of bed is a struggle, that can make you feel like climbing a mountain. My hair is not nearly as curly, but every couple of weeks it will get to be one big block of tangles on the crown on my head, after leaving it in a bun for weeks at a time. Funny thing is I can even get away with it cause my hair doesn't get oily almost at all, or smelly. So no social motivation there either and in isolation like we are now it is so easy to just let that slip.. when it all gets too much the hair salon down the block is a salvation, I honestly feel sorry for the poor girl who has to detangle the mess but that emotionally is less taxing somedays than having to come through it myself. Or some days I just wished I had straight hair temporarily cause it would be easier to handle.. I feel her so much... trying to overcome your mental health struggles is so so hard and you just let yourself go..

Until I stumbled upon your channel, I had no idea this was something so many people could benefit from or that someone having the patience and ability to remove mats from hair was rare. I've got a 6 year old, long beautiful wavy curly hair, so so so thick though, and it mats up so bad so quick. It got really bad this past winter, I was dealing with a massive depression and she just refused to brush her hair. It was one big mat all in the back of her head, only her bangs (Self given because she decided to cut her own hair a while back) were free from the massive mat. It took 2 days, but I managed to remove the mats. I've had to do the same to my own hair a few times from sheer laziness/depressive episodes, whatever the reason, my hair just mats so easily.... I'm on a tangent now. Anyways, just wanted to say I love the amazing work that you do!
