    It's the hardest and most precise spinning back kick I've ever seen in my life - this guy is a BEAST. I wouldn't like to see what happens to the guy when he lands something like this on the ribcage or solar plexus. 90% it would finish the fight in the UFC, or at least knock the guy down breathless with couple broken ribs. Sick kick

      Not if you land it with the heel dude, a kick doesn't push people unless it's like a teep you'd see Muay Thai, pushing with the flat of the foot. Look at where his heel is hitting the bag, it bends inwards like you'd see with a Thai kick do, do you think a Low Kick just pushes your leg to the side? There's significantly more power in this and the heel is a very solid striking surface, it doesn't "cut' in the way the shin foes, it smashes into you like an elbow.
      Small striking surfaces with the power of the leg and hips behind it can easily break the lower ribs, with a severe hit that isn't properly taken potentially causing serious internal damage. Have you ever been hit by one of these? Go get a pad, find an old school taekwondo guy like Joe if you know one, and get them to hit you with it.
      The only reason people think this is because in sparring they get hit with low force controlled kicks. The real thing is very, very different. I've seen people flattened out even during ITF style sparring with pads let alone full contact.
      I mean the jumping variant of this can smash skulls, so, yeah, pretty sure ribs are on the menu.

    • @wingbm
      @wingbm 7 лет назад +9

      lowlowseesee depends how you choose to implicate it. Comparing taekwon do to say, muay thai is like comparing kung fu to boxing

    • @lowlowseesee
      @lowlowseesee 7 лет назад +1

      blake w
      i completely agree with you about comparing arts and though we both could be wrong i have a strong reason to believe(aka, mounds of evidence) that it is very much as nuanced as you alluded too. people tend to believe that arts that have little resistance training like tkd or karate are either completely effective(usually the people taking the art caught in tradition, just like a religion) or they are people who can see through the bs and can tell its mostly ineffective. the jury has been in and it seems that the arts with resistance training are the ones that are most effective because they have corrective mechanisms and can evolve accordingly. but yeah, when i took tkd as a kid in america, the punches for sparring were all boxing technique. but they never told us this. the punches from traditional tkd would get a person beat up in most situations etc etc. as far as implication...thats where i disagree somewhat. if a grappler gets a tkd guy on the ground, its curtains for the tkd guy. where as in stand up....the grappler can have a way better chance at stand up than the tkd guy will have on the ground, likely due to tkds pitfalls. The same goes for even a blue belt in bjj vs a black belt...no amount of implication is going to give the blue belt the knowledge to beat the black belt. its too wide of an experience and skill gap. and i use that example so you know im not just some biased asshole against TMA. this is a result of much examination and critical thought

    • @wingbm
      @wingbm 7 лет назад +10

      lowlowseesee I agree with that as well. Im second degree in TKD, and I feel its more of a gateway to other martial arts, like kung fu and muay thai. I still take TKd, because in a couple circumstances the kicks that I learned there have saved me from having the shit kicked out of me on the street. But now i also take ju-do and jujitsu for more practical reasons. I feel having a wide range of experience in martial arts is more beneficial than spending your whole life perfecting one specific art.

    • @lowlowseesee
      @lowlowseesee 7 лет назад

      blake w
      thats very wise of you to supplement and also the mixing has been proven to be a better way to go about life. to each their own for sure though, like think about how often many of us will get in an altercation the older we get...its really minimum. im 36 now and i live a simple life. especially if you live in the states where shit is relatively safe or there are just guns involved(kicks matter less here)....someone can stick to one art and be safe from an ass beating. and if that art is an art like boxing or judo or bjj, arts with resistance in the training...one can be real effective in an actual fight. ive only been in one real all out fight and even then i modified my tkd to the point where it looked like muay thai. i broke someones nose with multiple knees which were really front kicks but half the motion. i was really deep into bruce lee as a kid and jkd(which i also trained in a little) so i could tell that things i was taught (wide stances and useless blocks, NO HEAD MOVEMENT) would get me killed in an actual fight. kids are lucky these days, mma is popular and there are numerous vids of street fights to watch to crush any myths. back in my day this was not the case

    • @twizack22

    This is exactly how Jae Hun Kim taught us to do that kick. It was kind of his trade mark. Direct, powerful, minimizing any openings to the opponent. Joe Rogan has not lost any of the quickness I remember of him back in the 80s when we trained at Mr. Kim's TKD institute. He is naturally gifted, though I do wish he would give credit to his former TKD teacher for what he has learned. It was the foundation of the brilliant pyramid of martial skill Mr. Rogan has built over the years.

    (Joe Rogan) in 1981, at age fourteen, he became a practitioner of Kenpo Karate before transitioning to Taekwondo. He eventually gained a 2nd dan black belt. A four-time state champion in Massachusetts, in 1987 he was the USA Taekwondo U.S. Open Champion. In 1996, he began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Jean Jacques Machado, eventually earning his brown belt. In addition, he holds a brown belt in 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu under Eddie Bravo.
    He also practiced and competed in kickboxing.

  • @ZirthDrince
    @ZirthDrince 10 лет назад +8

    Amazing! The most powerful kick usually is a straight one. From my experience, my specialty power kick was the front kick, also a straight kick. But looking at this, adding a turn followed by straight side kick, its definitely more powerful. The only thing to add to that to make it more powerful is to use the heel as the only contact point rather than the conventional knife-of-the-foot. One of the contributing factor that makes the front kick powerful is the small point if impact, which is the ball of the foot. Using the heel-only would bring the deadliness to a higher level.
    But I must say that the "twist" which you explain is actually not present. When you demonstrate the moment of impact in a static position there is a twist. This is because as you demonstrate you start of facing front, so you have to do the twist to get your body in the same position as the moment of impact.But when you perform the technique from beginning to end, the turn is lead by the hips and the upper body follows through so there is no twist.
    In fact, when performing a sidekick even without the twist, you would want to minimise the twist. Although, due to the natural physique, eliminating twist completely during a sidekick with the front leg without the twist is impossible. The reason why you'd want to minimise the twist is because as you twist your upper-body, hence your upper-body-weight, will move in the opposite direction to the direction of impact hence canceling out some of the momentum. This reduces the power of the kick.

      Using the heel would not add enough power vs the risk of slightly missing your target and losing balance on a glancing strike, making you vulnerable to counter attacks (mainly sweeps or takedowns in MMA).
      Using the blade makes balance easier to control on impact, and potentially create space if not 100% on target (assuming your opponent is always moving), particularly as your eyes turn away from the opponent at point of impact for power.

    Wait. Is this the Spinning Side Kick or the Spinning Back Kick?
    They're two different things, correct?
    A spinning side-kick would be extended more to the front of the body, from the side of the hip, outwards with the hips basically still up-and-down though slightly turned, and this kick can be fired even if your facing the opponent frontally without turning the body completely.
    The spinning back-kick would be where the body is turned completely and so are the hips, meaning the kick is fired more from your back-side or behind you. This kick is mostly thrown blind, targeted before the actual spin, though some people master the movement enough to be able to turn their heads and lock their eyes to their target strike-zone.

      Im not a fan of back kicks due to kicking blind.... almost like i have no other kick/ technique to use so I'm going to do this??
      Plus its VERY unstable and puts you at great disadvantage it they can see it coming.

    This kick is never used in MMA, the kick that people see is the spinning side kick. This kick can shatter bones, I have no idea why people do not use it. The only downside of this kick is it swaps your lead leg when you preform it.

    • @TCUSB
      @TCUSB 8 лет назад +1

      +Giygas Watch Cung Le, Conor McGregoror or GSP fight and you'll see they use the turning side kick/ spinning back kick. And unless I'm missing something huge, the names are used pretty interchangeably because even when I used to train in TKD it'd just be a spinning back kick.
      Even in the beginning of the video, 0:20 , Joe says "the turning side kick, or the spinning back kick."

      Yeah, according to Joe, the difference is not the name but the technique. But why not then differentiate the techniques using the two different names??? lol

      ***** Thank you, this pretty much answers my doubt. I believe you are 100% correct on the giveaway, and the takedown. From what it seems; to really throw this kick you need to time it and have amazing jujitsu. Anyways thanks for the response - makes sense.

    • @KittyBoom360
      @KittyBoom360 8 лет назад

      ***** Is that a little true of spinning attacks in general, too, because I've noticed that smart strikers against grapplers will avoid spinning attacks altogether. If worried about a takedown, limit kicks and avoid spinning, yes?

    • @KittyBoom360
      @KittyBoom360 8 лет назад

      ***** Admittedly, I was actually describing one particular fighter's adjustments to her style, Joanna Jedrzejczyk. She used to throw more kicks and spinning attacks in Muay Thai and still did some a bit in earlier MMA fights, but when going against strong grapplers in UFC she lowers her stance, never spins, and limits kicks, sometimes not kicking at all in the first round or until she spots a predictable opportunity. Maybe her thinking is not so much about avoiding certain attacks against certain opponents but more about how long it takes her to get a good sense of an opponent's movements when the style differs from Muay Thai. And a mistake in timing, especially on a spin, can so easily end so poorly, as in how many fights I can remember ending moments later on the ground in a submission.

      I have the same thing. ii find it very strange; But recently I discovered that altough I write with my right hand, and kick a ball for example with py left leg, my left arm punches harder then my right hand. I ever knew that. So I was always using the wong arm to ko someone in a fight. My goal now is to be a good kicker with both legs.

    Many, many years ago I was sparring with a guy who was a black belt in TKD (I have no formal martial arts training, I just have years of experience sparring) he performed this exact kick on me and his heel hit my solar plexus. It was a very interesting sensation. Trying to breathe but you cant breathe. In our later sparring sessions he tried to replicate this event but he was unsuccessful. Pain can be a good teacher.

FORM MATTERS. Ive seen so many students come from other schools that I had ro reteach them to kick and strike.
    Like dropping your weight as you strike will give you more power if done the correct way.. Best way to get peoples kicks back in form is Tabletops using a chair or a BowStaff
