ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.
We upload a RUclips video every Saturday night at 7️⃣pm EST, and post daily on Instagram!

Awesome job! I was not aware that the Amish have power tools yes ride in horse drawn carriage.

Oddly enough, if it's for business they can use whatever power they need. They had all the latest cordless tools, a gas powered air compressor, and used our generator to charge everything with their gas

I’ve never seen 3/4” used where I framed, everything we did was like 1 1/8” subfloor.

Can I ask why you dd not install a one piece ridge beam for added strength?

It would have to have been a giant 40ft long steel I-beam, costing a fortune and much harder logistically. No need for it, the 3-1/2" Sch40 steel center column and two spans of 2-ply 18" LVL is probably overkill as it is haha

Its a good thing the beam didnt fall and hit the floor... You're more worried about the floor than the men possibly falling? 😬 Dang....

1:16 I know you are paying the Amish an hourly rate to frame your house, just wondering if you ever got a price for them to do all of it.. At some point it is best to let the pros do it the way they are familiar, LOL5:38 might just be a little micro managing...

I did get several quotes on the whole project ranging from 23k-28k. What I ended up paying was just over 12k doing the 1st floor ourselves. And yes, agreed on the micromanagement.. but I will say this was taken after 1 day of not micromanaging, which left me with improperly nailed I joist blocking 😬 so I was on high alert!

@@MasonDixonAcres Sounds like a good deal and they are good workers. I have lived your story a couple times now definitely not easy to plan a project like that... you guys are doing a great job...

So not sure why you are needing to explain or tell the crew how to frame...they should already know or you may not have the right crew. I am also a perfectionist so I do most things myself. I would expect a framing crew to charge extra if you are micromanaging the crew. They should already know how to frame. Looking good I need to go back and see what you are building, a garage or a home...
