Hope it's serving you well. Curious: Why pick this over something like an RME? I almost pulled the trigger on an Antelope, but the driver issues were a no-go for me, especially in a world where RME still officially supports 15-year-old firewire interfaces.

RME is superior in driver support my M1 Mac mini still works with my Fireface 800 through FireWire to TB3 adapter and its flawless I have both the Antelope galaxy 32 and RME but I use the RME as my main PLAYBACK and then my antelope galaxy 32 as my DAC through adat if you have a RME stick with it those drivers are coded to PERFECTION

I originally ordered this because of the the 32 Dsub Ins and Outs, I mean come on a 1 U rack space with all my I/O. Unfortunately when I got the item my happiness turned to sadness and frustration because Antelopes drivers and launch portal are unreliable. I am not the only person who has debt with this. Customer service left a lot to be desired all in all I’d say the item worked 10% of the due to drivers. I bought the MRC as well and it was one or the other that would show up on my computer...Interface or Monitor controller ...had it a month and it never met my needs..when the largest Music store drops that product..leave it alone..I have a Focusrite Red 16L and it is solid as a rock. Good Luck.

My personal experience was similarly frustrating as many others commenting. I have, and still use, the original Orion 32. I was never able to connect 32 channels via usb as promised. I carefully created my computer, as much as I could, based on tips and warnings, to have a successful 32 channel usb connection…no success.
I had to shell out for an RME Madiface Pro to get full Orion functionality. (Extra money, more complexity now).
In addition to that frustration, Antelope abandoned support of their first “amazing, do-it-all” product extremely quickly.
I believe there was one update then nothing.
The next version came out and was/is completely incompatible. Most companies would have allowed the original to have software compatibility and possibly receive a couple shared perks from the new version. However, it was completely abandoned.
Although it’s the best solution sound vs price if it works, this is my first and last Antelope product. I don’t even read new product announcements from Antelope due to the lack of loyalty on their part.

Let us know how those drivers are - I know Antelope's had some trouble in recent years, but ymmv and I haven't heard much this year about that, but you never know!
Similar in format are the RME UFX interfaces - You're not getting Dante there, tradeoff is less analog i/o, more ADAT, higher conversion specs, and a lower price. Kind of like comparing an orange to a tangerine, really, depending on your needs.
And for folks who're thinking of the Dante route - There are gonna be some interesting things on the horizon this year, so keep your eyes peeled :)

    • @dayzaudio
      @dayzaudio 6 месяцев назад +4

Hey - the drivers are fine with the Galaxy boxes, just as they have been with the various Orion units. I know all the debates and have been in them. Antelope has gotten knocked by individuals just like any product or hardware. They also get knocked for customer support - again a fallacy as I have worked with them on questions and specific PC setup issues I had at one point. Also usb vs Thunderbolt have played big differences too and how Antelope has addressed things. And Its worth noting - Antelope does not have 1 set of drivers they manage and keep updating that then work across all their interfaces or levels of interfaces. They have drivers they manage individually across each product and they have to write them uniquely for each due to the intricacies of each platform, which I admit they tend to be so advanced - they kill off platforms pretty quick or have. Everything led to the Synergy platform and all these levels and flavors of them. But, still they hand maintain each driver set for each platform for each OS, and they are barely a 200 person company. They are not some massive establishment or part of a larger corporate entity. So the plus is they listen and connect like that to users. And that can be difficult in this world when we all want quick answers and helped instantly. Also their modeling of gear into plugins - is the hidden gem, barely anyone knows about their PLUGINS, even with massive marketing on it (at least via email deals) - but their modeled plugins of say tube compressors is unrivaled. I am open minded about them and the future, but this is what I know. And maybe they are such an underdog yet respected at the toppest tier of the music industry game with engineers of all kinds, and that is why I love them. But, they honestly should be in more of our rooms and setups. And Andrew's video is definitely a helper to demystify these Galaxy boxes for sure.

The problem with Antelope Audio is their drivers and software suck! Hardware is great, however if you can't use the dsp on it, it's pointless. Plus Thunderbolt for Windows flat out does not work at all! Got the Zen Studio + and still can't get it to work correctly. And everytime Windows updates, everything gets all fucked up! Wish it wasn't so, because IMO you need at least 12 tracks to record drums. She if you work with real instruments based music, you have to be able to record drums! But 16 is preferred, especially if you want to do a small half live session, where the drummer is isolated but you have the whole band playing scratch tracks to get that live feel! Please stop editing every single thing to the grid! It does not sound good!

Having no “special” i/o (phones, monitors etc.) harkens back to how things were with analog tape & mixer. As you also do now, all the chains & tracks were built through a (normalized) patch bay in a 1:1 fashion.
Clunky, but every “channel” was the same as the other - a prerequisite for any general use studio available for hire. But sure, bygone times as most studios are like yours - adapted for personal use. Which is great…!
Btw, I’ve used more ancient Antelope i/o for years, and it just worked - paying customers like that, so we could focus on the session.
Best of luck from -an old- (?!) …a ‘vintage’ recording engineer & musician… 👍

    Nice video,
I have been considering the Orion Gen 4 (rather than the Galaxy) as I mainly I need the 32 analog inputs and outputs (via D-sub). I need from an interface the 32 analog outputs to connect to a 32 channel Analog mixer.
This will allow me to use my many vintage rack gear units (and newer units also) which I used when I did audio recording full time years ago. (I used to have back at that time a 48 channel inline fully modular analog console and an analog large format multi-track recorder running at 30 IPS).
I probably don't need All the Orion's 32 analog inputs all at once (usually 12 to 16 is needed for tracking a band), but having those extra inputs doesn't hurt for sure.
The Orion Gen 4, (even though The Galaxy offers more), I would say gets me where I need to go for my way of recording because the biggest pain without all those analog outputs (as I'm sure you know) is patching in your outboard gear easily for that mix down and other recording uses.
Thanks for doing the video. Very well done. Question, I saw a Trident console (great units) in some shots, but it's not there in other shots. Are you no longer using it? Thanks and super informative video. All the best.

Hi Andrew! Thanks for the video! While the Galaxy 32 looks like a outstanding interface on paper (I/O, routing, dsp etc.) I would like to warn you about some issues I’ve had while tracking a band not too long ago.
I was using the dsp plugins on the hardware to clean up some tracks with processing going to the Daw.
The recall of the control panel was a mess. I had to check the settings of the dsp-plugins every morning because some of them just would not recall correctly. This happened even after manually re-loading the Galaxy’s session preset. In the end I had to manually recall the settings on some of the plugins by hand.
The second issue I had, were random clicks and pops occurring on transient-heavy sources on some channels while recording. Fortunately I quickly realised they were there and started to check everything (levels, cabling, microphones). In the end only a re-install of the drivers and control panel solved the issue.
In my opinion those are things you should not encounter with a „professional“ piece of gear at that price point. YMMV but I just wanted to raise awareness that the software stability of antelope is still mediocre at best and can possibly ruin a perfect take pretty easily.
    Cheers
    Phil

I struggle bad with Antelope Audio, we have a Orion 32+ in the school studio, and somehow it wont communicate properly with new laptops through USB(3). Customers service answer the phone 1 out of 10 times, and I think they do a bad job updating drivers for newer operating systems. In my experience, ill stay far away when upgrading my own home setup. Never had 1 problem with Focusrite for example, my lil old Scarlett 8I6 have direct monitoring and the customer service answers the phone, things just works! Because of this I think il go for the Focusrite RED in the future when I need better converters for home projects.

You're literally describing the limitations of the Apollo interface alone, and you paid $5k for something that my $500 interface does. 192k, Thunderbolt, SPDIF, more I/O than I'll ever need for a full studio setup, everything routed and I never have to touch my interface. Galaxy is definitely $4k past the point of diminished returns. The only thing that I'm interested in from all of the features you mentioned would be the digital mixer. My digital mixer does all of the same routing options, but doesn't look like a full on mixer and at that point that's purely an aesthetic choice. Glad it works for you, but really overkill when my $500 unit literally does all of the same stuff. My guess the extra $4500 is for the licensing of all the Atmos features that you, and I don't really care about.

Antelope Audio is a better solution and it makes Flock patchbay useless especially for the price. I’ll rather go for Antelope Audio 32 or 64 channel Audio interface and will have highest quality audio signal, Flexible routing, High quality DSP + FPGA plugin like hardware and more creative usages. I have asked Antelope Audio to design their console software with the ability to be able to re-call unlimited routing presets with Stream Deck (hopefully they’re listening).
