I loved it, the sheer scale of the new maps were amazing, feels like they were built for giants. New enemies were cool too, different enough from the main game. Like you said, more Amid Evil is always good. In my head, the sword is the shotgun and the mace is the super shotgun.
Another trick against the shield guys is to use the Whispers Edge. The edges of the projectile pierce enemies, which is normally used to hit multiple enemies with one slash, but against the shield guys it lets you hit them without the projectile bouncing off the shield; I found it much more reliable than the celestial claw. I also noticed the staff was very effective against the fire breathing dogs, presumably because it does water damage and they're weak to it, similar to the flame wratihs in the sacred path levels from the base game.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s had enough of publishers announcing games way too early. For New Blood it’s absolutely the worst. At first the Soon™️ was kind of cute but now it’s just obnoxious and kind of insulting imo
I could forgive it if there was more transparency, but I understand if devs want to be more private about what they do day to day, it's just really frustrating. Ion fury aftershock, this DLC, Dusk HD, and outside this genre, silksong and factorio DLC. All excellent games with excellent devs but man, being a fan is draining.
The Black Labyrinth is a great expansion for a great indie shooter. I made it part of my Perfect Games list my second time 100%ed after the additional six achievements got added. I'm currently rocking 33 Perfect Games on Steam with AMID EVIL being my second most recent to make said list and my number one newest to join that list in my library being fellow old school shooter Quake 2! Nice video btw.
Finally got around to playing this DLC and I loved it. Insanely iconic levels. I usually don’t desire sequels but I think an Amid Evil sequel would go down pretty well.
I feel like I’m the only one who felt like it was a bit too long. At around the eighth level I felt a bit of fatigue, and if the expansion was just a couple levels shorter I honestly feel like it would have hit the short but sweet hit spot.
Not my favourite fps mechanically but it's absolutely stunning to look at. An excellent example of why good graphics and fidelity are not the same necessarily
I feel like Amid Evil is easily the most underrated game of the boomer shooters. It seems like almost no one talks about it. Cultic is my personal favorite but I’d put Amid Evil not far below. I’d be tempted to say it’s comparable in quality to Dusk. Dusk certainly has a tone that’s more my taste but Amid Evil just has some top tier level design and a new roster of enemies every episode? Come on. I can’t wait to see what the devs do next.
I enjoyed it but agree that the shield knights weren't much fun and broke down the pacing, also some of the platforming sequences got tiring. But it was a great time!
I'm happy with Black Labyrinth, but I understand that the wait feelt to long. I get the feeling in the last 2 years that many developers promise more than they can deliver. For example, the dev of Extraneum (I think you got a review for that too) said in one of his steam posts that he doesn't know if he will manage 3 episodes. While I understand people having sympathy for Indiedevs, I also think that once you promised something and went early access that you HAVE to deliver on those promises.
It's been so long since I played the base game that I don't really 100% remember it that well. I'll probably play this eventually, among the other PC indie fps games I buy on sale but never play
I didnt love the original Amid Evil but thought Black Laberybth was amazing! Excellent maps which felt huge but were easy to navigate, absolutely breathtaking visuals and atmosphere, i thought the punch box traversal puzzles were pretty ingenious and i enjoyed all the enemies except perhaps the final boss. I think it's really unfair to call this a map pack. Map packs generally use existing assets and lack any story. The work on assets and visuals here was incredible, and i really enjoyed the visual story telling and little notes on the way to and through the black laberybth
I've enjoyed the expansion about as much as I did the main game. Great visuals/level design, fun gameplay/weapons, and that giant flying sword section was one of the neatest things I've experienced in a game in a while. That said, I don't care for the platforming. It slowed the gameplay down too much for me. But I didn't have any weird bugs like you did; enemies getting stuck, etc.
Yeah, announcing games 3 years before they are done is annoying. But even more annoying is releasing the game in Early Access and then not finishing it for more than 2 or 3 years. Graven, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, Ultrakill. The latest example will probably be Supplice. Devs of that game promised new level every 2 months, if I remember correctly. But last I checked, they added zero. And yeah, those are indie devs, I get it. But some of those games had their release dates postponed multiple times. I mean, come on. P.S. I stand corrected - I just checked and the devs of Supplice actually added two new maps (one of them secret).
The time gap gave me enough time to upgrade my gpu, so I played the expansion with RT on. I wish they would have gave the other weapons arms, to fit with the inclusion of fists. I will say the staff is better than a regular pistol. It has homing mechanism.
I'm def interested in picking this up eventually, though I'll say that A.E. is my least favorite of the NB shooters, so I'm not as hype for this as I would be the next Ultrakill update
4:49 unsure if you paid attention the scribbles on the right of this platform but it does tell you to use momentum to get up (as in jumping right after it pushes you to gain enough height for the platform above) other than that, wow! what a professional and clean review yet with so little views, i hope you blow up at one point! your style is very akin to other boomer shooter youtubers i frequently watch, in which will include you soon! the criticisms are very much understandable as i've encountered few enemies AI jank, and the shield knights are pretty frustrating to deal with in which ive only found a few ways to deal with them (whisper's edge piercing attack, celestial claw's splash damage, circling them with your fists as they don't have melee attacks and their projectiles are fairly easy to dodge, and of course the void splitter) that aside, do you have any more reviews coming up soon? i'm unsure if you had reviewed wrath: aeon of ruins, if not then i'd like to see a short one on it. cheers!
You may not like that it took them so long to make The Black Labyrinth, but it still came out sooner than Ion Fury: Aftershock. Also, I wonder how many new retro-style indie shooters will come out before ULTRAKILL is complete.
I don’t get how you complain at 8:05 that there’s no shotgun equivalent, but you literally show the star of torment on the screen, which I personally consider an excellent FPS shotgun. It’s at least as similar to a shotgun as the voltride is to the nail gun from quake. I personally think of the whispers edge like my standard shotgun and the star of torment as my SSG.
The Star has some shotgun qualities but it feels more like a rail gun to me because of the slow fire and long range. What I have in mind is something with spread and low range.
So uh... about that Nintendo Switch version? Also, does this game have texture smoothing? I legit hate how every boomer shooter indie dev is trying to make every game look like Quake 1 without realizing not every 3d FPS game from the late 90s had pixelated textures everywhere.
The sword is the shotgun. It has the same arc that an average shotgun would hit. I mean youre even using it at that point in the video. Its just faster firing and a little weaker
I get "annoyed" (more like mildly miffed) by the term "boomer shooter". It was mostly gen x that was play these games, not boomers. I call them doomer shooters, or doomlikes. Quakelikes works I guess.
The name comes from the "30-year old boomer" meme, which was making fun of the fact that a lot of older millennials and gen Xers on imageboards had the mentality of/sounded exactly like baby boomers. Quake was specifically tied to the meme, hence the name catching on.

Good tip! I'll use the edge against them next time I'm playing.

Gotta raise interest, get purchases on other publisher games and keep development overhead..
These are amazing games by the publisher's size and scope
RIP DUSK HD
its a widespread issue in the industry now, and I hate it

Let them cook

The only bad thing with that DLC is how short it is. I mean it is worth it's price, but I just need more of it.
Agreed.
I feel like I’m the only one who felt like it was a bit too long. At around the eighth level I felt a bit of fatigue, and if the expansion was just a couple levels shorter I honestly feel like it would have hit the short but sweet hit spot.
There is a secret level with a secret boss, related to a certain infamous Doom texture!
Thanks for the video Kirk I’ve got so much on the backlog lately with all these releases I had been wondering how this expansion was.
Yeah August was packed, so many releases, hard to keep up!
Not my favourite fps mechanically but it's absolutely stunning to look at. An excellent example of why good graphics and fidelity are not the same necessarily

finally someone covering this game

Man, you using the Voltride and not overkilling enemies with it really pet my peeve. Other than that, yeah, this DLC is just a high quality map pack.
Sir please refrain from petting your peeve to my videos.

AEVR isn't the only thing Indefatigable has been working on besides BL, so the long wait is understandable.

I am actually mad about the "Coming Soon TM".
I fucking waited
The gauntlets are literally Jojo reference, 10/10.
That also peeved me. What's the point of announcing a game a decade away from when it's actually gonna release? What is this, Elder Scrolls 6?
Nice
9:10 So, every game now has to have a variant of Doom Eternal's Marauder?! 💩
The sword is the shotgun. It has the same arc that an average shotgun would hit. I mean youre even using it at that point in the video. Its just faster firing and a little weaker
Is the final boss... DIO!!!!??
Oh shet ..dlc ion fury 😢

@@jimmydurante138 Yes. It still doesn't fit.
Wish we were getting a dlc or sequel for DUSK instead
I was hoping we'd get one too. While I really enjoyed Amid Evil and Ion Fury, DUSK was my favorite. It NEEDS an expansion!
