FEAR Review: • FEAR Review - Is Alma ...
Trepang2 is the long in development spiritual successor to the 2006 fps classic FEAR. Originally developed by Monolith Productions FEAR was an unusual mix of stylish fps action and Japanese horror. Trepang2 takes this base concept and makes it its own, recreating FEAR's mechanics but also expanding on them. Is Trepang2 the return to FEAR we were hoping for? Find out in this Trepang2 review.
Trepang2 was developed by Trepang Studios and published by Team17. It is currently available for PC.

I must be one of those weirdos that actually _likes_ how jarring and independent each mission is. This feels like a throw-back to old video games where stages were designed to be as unique and different from each other as physically possible and you were given maybe 20~30 minutes at most per level.
Just like ol Metal Slug where one day you're in the bayou shootin giant prawns and the next you're in Egypt walking around as a mummy then the next you've been turned into a zombie to fight aliens (not even kidding). This sort of thing just feels soulful to me.
I like this game a lot because of it's gameplay compartmentalization with high replay value. Something that I don't see a lot of nowadays. Everything is either a days-long epic into the unknown or an interactive movie you pay $60 for. Things try so hard to tell a story or teach a lesson that they forget to be games and this game is like taking a breath of clean mountain air after living in San Francisco all your life. The entire game is _just_ the gameplay, like Broforce or Contra or old Mario Games. You want to replay because every time you play, things are different and every time you play a mission it's it's own little mini-episode that is complete from start to finish.
I honestly don't understand a lot of complaints about this game, only that a PvP system is impossible with the game mechanics (even though I desperately, desperately want a return to forms of arena shooters rather than this nonsensical ADS-ridden TAC-shooter tenderfoot bullcrap). I'm tired of games feeling slow, sluggish, and unresponsive and developers just calling it "hard difficulty". Give me AI that thinks, lighting responses, a series of player tools, and rapid gameplay please.

I absolutely love this game, at this point Trepang2 is my game of the year. A lot of people seem to dislike the story but I think it was a fantastic wrap-around to tie together really well developed, thought out levels. The intel logs are a really cool immersive-sim-esque take on world-building. Also thought their horror takes were really cool and different. I really hope they continue development and release more content, the only thing I dislike about Trepang2 is that there isn't more to play!

I've seen people refer to this style of game as "Tactical Horror", and I think it might be my new favorite subgenre! I love the juxaposition of capable, well-equiped paramilitary types with otherworldly and paranormal entities. I think it's an interesting evolution of survival horror, and I hope we get more games like this in the future.

    With the music:
What I noticed is that the music doesn't really fit as well with early game gameplay. Once you get more hours and figure out how the movement works, the music tends to fit perfectly in my opinion.

Seems like you missed out on two reasons as to WHY the Safehouse location is important and couldn't be a menu.
After every mission things in the safehouse changes ever so slightly (Mainly the first room you see behind the window near the quartermaster)
Secondly, the Infiltrator High value target having their surprise attack spawning there having a chance to spawn after finishing any mission on Extreme difficulty

    Great vid!
I find the story more interesting the more I played the game and really listened to the dialogue. For example, I think that the CEO, Dr Emmerson and the Patriarch are all defectors of the Syndicate. (Which explains them all having the coins). The Syndicate seems to steal 106 from Horizon and uses him against them before trying to betray him. It's clear that Horizon created 106 by the CEO saying, "You were never meant to be a weapon".
If you collect all the memory drones you get to see that 106 is still alive and it seems that the CEO is too (TBC) which could mean that his consciousness transfer may have worked in the end and Horizon pulled a double wammy against the Syndicate in order to get you close and inside their clone base to destroy it.
    Call me crazy 😅

    • @audriusskebas3099
      @audriusskebas3099 2 месяца назад

I am pretty sure it's actually that 106 was created by the syndicate,
Same with the guy who shoots the monitor and uses the katana, (Cycle 105)
The patriarch is fully aware that the syndicate made him, (Cycle 91)
Same goes for the CEO. (Cycle 78)
They are all Cycles, with you being cycle 106.

Music, subjective, yadda yadda, but what would you have preferred music-wise for the combat sections?
Zipping around turning soldiers into porridge with a SPAS-12: "CA-LI-FORNIA GIRLS, WE'RE UNDENIABLE" ♫
This OST is what the DOOM Eternal DLCs deserved, as opposed to what they got. The production is clean, punishing, percussion is meaty and the electronic stuff is all really tastefully implemented.

I really was not a fan of the monster fights, felt like they overreached and if they had kept it to just human squads it would have been a much better experience. I find myself replaying levels only to about halfway because my enjoyment drops of drastically after I'm done fighting human enemies and have to fight zombies or bullet sponge monster fights :/
It's sad because I can see just how close this game is to comes to perfection but just misses the mark ever so slightly.
