11:41 Alongside War with the Newts, Bubny has one of my favorite moments in the game. Hearing the female voice at the train station after hours of only hearing the shocked grunts of soldiers, mumbling and farting of the grenadiers, and my own gunfire was genuinely chilling.
Even better if you've played all three episodes right after another with few breaks, since this voice only appears once in episode 1 and never in episode 2. Once it appeared that second time, it really made me feel like I was home, but at the same time I went off the deep end.
Solid review! For people from around that part of the world, it does carry more weight, but even younger players from overseas, completely detached from that historical time, should find it interesting as long as they enjoy retro 3D shooters.
Definitely, this game is full of my childhood memories ;) Although I was pretty shocked, after some young fella from the US stated, he is seriously not sure if HROT maker is for or against communism... yeah that really happened :(
@@BLUEPELICAN234 What do you think of: its 1922 and the communists are about to win the russian civil war and out of nowhere the tsar comes back from the dead (player) and has to defeat communism to save mother russia. Bosses will be things like lenin and stalin.
I literally finished HROT in two or three sittings. Waited for the full release before playing. So glad I did. A lovingly crafted boomshoot with a unique atmosphere that begs to be explored. Surprises around every corner, seriously spooky moments, challenging combat, and a sense of humor to top it off! Thanks for covering this gem!
This game is fantastic. I’ve only just commenced the second episode. The first episode blew me away start to finish. Loved every second of it. I suggest playing on the max difficulty for the best challenge. Never felt unbalanced or cheap to me
The level design really is tight! Naturally leading you where you need to go. Although there were levels where navigating might be a little tricky, for example in E3M2 (Nemocnice Motol?). Otherwise, great level design and great game!
Easily my favourite FPS, minimum top 5. My ONLY complaint is I did not use the kick mechanic, and wish that the game reminded you that you had that ability, as well as providing some MORE situations where thats the best way to approach solving a problem. Otherwise PERFECTION.
I think the bleak and desaturated colours fit well the USSR-themed dystopia (I shall dub this style, which I found in Soviet sci-fi "Flarepunk") which the game portrays.
I need to get through episode 3 now that it's out. It's great stuff and I agree that I want them to make more solid shooters like this. Hrot is excellent.
By far the best reference in this game is how the boss of E3M4, George of Podiebrad, is basically a Marauder from Doom Eternal (sans the catchy voicelines.) Same gimmick with shield, similarly tough to kill. Damn, I wish more historical figures were a boss references to modern games.
Great game had it since early access loved it then love it now 2023 is great year for games who's ready for trepang2 this month 😊 and stalker 2 in December.
I maintain that the game's visuals are too drab and went too far in trying to set "era appropriate" limits to its graphics - Quake could have and did have both more colour and more detail. The intention behind it doesn't change that fact. However, despite these visual complaints, the game has solid gameplay, level design and is just so full of heart. Which makes sense, considering it was made by Špytihnev all by himself. A product of passion, skill and vision. Reminds me Dusk, but more minimalist and straight up seeping with Czech culture. Thanks for shedding light on these gems Kirk
While episode 3 had some fun levels, a lot of them just felt like jokes and shitposting. Any thematic buildup from the first two episodes is thrown to the wayside in favor of memes.
I did briefly play this game, before refunding it since it wasn't preforming well on the steam deck at all. I did enjoy what I played but couldn't deal with it's commenly sub 20fps (I did hear after refunding it that turning off steamos' built in frame limiter greatly so I might give it a second chance in the future).
I hated the last two-three levels and final boss. I don't like arena shooters in general, and it was weird to start fighting in arenas in the last levels after playing a more-or-less straight fps the entire time, felt like the dev just gave up on intricate design in favor of a simpler approach. As to the final boss, it just didn't make a wad of sense. After Gottwald, I expected it to be something else entirely. 😒
Glad you took the time to finish your review series of HROT. My personal game of the year so far. Boltgun fell very flat for me (though its solid) and Slayers X just annoyed me too much. Not sure what other retro inspired shooters are coming this year.
thought it was good. had a few issues (was a bit easy on max diff some of the time unless i had almost no ammo, and though the levels are tight, they can also feel small and limited, like the dev was allergic to the enemy count going above 70), but id say it was worth the money and was fun. also "Czech's Quest 3" is hilarious
Im so surprised that so many people seem to love this game. I have only bad things to say about it and only play it every now and then to see if anything has changed.
I never understand why people have problems with an art style. When you play black and white game do you also feel that everything looks the same? Would Limbo be better game if it was in color? To me every level in Hrot feels unique and introduces new elements that weren't in previous levels. My only problem with the game is that I want more episodes.

I just realized how well Prague lends itself to Quake style mixing of industrial and medieval themes. The city is a marvel.
The little dogs throwing up was the funniest thing ever! I might buy the game for that feature alone.
Ive been to Prague on vacation and can confirm, it looks just like in this game.

my favorite of the new old-school shooters
You reckon a shooter like this but in a ww1 setting could work??

Funny that it's the retro games that make me want to ditch my console for a pc
Not that surprising, almost any AAA games that are on PC are also on consoles, no?
@@cchutney348 True. But not all indie gems are on consoles (because of their obnoxious publishing rules).

Otherwise, great level design and great game!
3:24 - and written in Pascal!
Probably, so developers would feel oppressed when they work on it! ;-)
I want to play this game in VR so much. Playing Amid-Evil on Quest 2 righ now and I love it.
The 3rd episode was a bit too silly/goofy when compared to the first two in terms of the vibe, but luckily not disappointing.

Best reviewer in town! Awesome cover on Hrot with an H
Looking forward to jumping into episode 3 once done with boltgun!
I had an absolute, eh, blast with this game. The level design is stella. Well worth a buy this one.

TOP TIER BOOOMER SHOOTER!
And that game as a fantastic xbox controller support with quick saved maped by default. Best controller support for a boomer shooter.
Played it on my steam deck and I agree.

This is Dusk but in soviet union

I laughed outloud at the title. Super clever.
Newts are reference to famous Czech classic book - War with the newts from Karol Capek
And when you wake up in the hospital on the next level, the book is by your bed.
