I remember a while back someone did a Tweet at NewBlood about how awful the game was and when they asked about it he admitted he couldn't figure out how to get past the difficulty select arena.
Personally i preffer Dusk over Amid Evil, but it is only centimetters behind for me, its a really, really good medieval fantasy FPS with some amazing design, specially in the late game, cause as civvie said "Its like a Mobius Ring, all i know is that its evil and it has to die".
The axe does good damage and can pull in enemies. While it being melee means a few enemies are not great to target some enemies (especially slower land ones) are very susceptible to the axe. Think of it like an always berserk fist. Edit: it also one hit kills the basic ep7 enemies.
Basic Axe has it's use even in the last chapter. It attracts small enemies to you when you swing it, so it is kind of a range weapon as well. In the Mini Big John fight, when you use the acquired souls, it just deletes all the small Johns around you.
This game is really something out of this world. The level design, the music, the weapons and enemies. The colours and bizarre, kinda dream like atmosphere is something I love about it. I don´t really like if games use the same colour pallete all over again on every level. This one really have some great creativity and some 90´s vibes.
Game was so much fun and I loved that you have to keep moving and can't really every stand still. It's never boring and just keeps that pace throughout.
Of all the games to come out of the New Wave of Retro Shooters, Amid Evil is the one puts its primary influences to shame. The weapons are both creative and satisfying and the Tome of Power mechanic is implemented perfectly. Ditching the 4 episodes of 8 levels each formula for 7 episodes with 4 levels each keeps the gameplay fresh.
they traded the amount levels for visual and gameplay depth a few of the episodes like the desert world were lukewarm at points but the game is still very good across the boarf
I felt the latter levels were more about visuals than good level design and I have still no clue how the final boss fight worked. Still, it is an amazing game, and also the only one I know where I can accidentally destroy Earth while shooting mobs.
Deffinetly think the black labrynth is leagues better just cause A: more detailed level design/bigger level design. B: doesn't sperate enemies by world so it can actually expirament with throwing different groups of enemies at you unlike the 7 realms where they get 4 or 5 different enemies per world which gets stale quick. C: the main 4 staffs actually feel differentiated in black labrynth because of the more complex level design compared to the first 5 realms where the azure staff, sword, trident, and star of torment don't feel like they serve seperate enough purposes. Though i think the arcane expanse and the chaos realm did shine through more
totally agree with you regarding the awesomeness of this game. you should've mentioned the axe's loaded fire mode, which brings up the finest doom chainsaw memories for me.
My only problem with this game is the world it is played in and the enemies.. They are so alien and fictious that i cant imagine to like to play this game. It would be so cool if it was set in a somewhat realistic place against semi-realistic enemies, it would be such a banger.
This game was impossible for me to get into, as much as I tried. Hexen and Heretic are favorites of mine and I kept hearing that if you like those you'll love this, but this game was way too abstract for me. I really wanted to like it but the combat only became more irritating and the ultra-vivid colors gave me a headache. It's especially disappointing because of the universal praise, but it just didn't click with me at all.
After Dusk, this game has shows the improvement on their the art style and the graphic a lot imo. I really enjoy this game and it looks pretty with RTX on. Remind me of the old school FPS such as Quake did a benchmark showcase on a 3DFX Voodoo
I share your love for this game FP. I really love it too. My favourite level is in your least favourite episode though oddly enough. E5M1 'Ruins of Rust' just blew me away. The darkness wasn't an issue for me.
One "Modern Heretic/Hexen" game I can REALLY reccomend is "Hedon". Absolutly fantastic guns and unlike Hexen you seldom want to rip your hair out. Many optional puzzles and some really good combat encounters. The game is split in two parts and the first part is more like Heretic while the secon is mor e like (a less frustrating) Hexen. Took me about 20 hours to beat both parts with the first being a little shorter. Once again, I can't do anything but reccomend it. If that doesn't catch your attention maybe this will: Shotgun-Flamethrower.
Good video, you made me want to buy the game. My only suggestion for improvement would be to avoid stretching the last syllables of your sentences, that sounds a little grating.
It's an okay game, but highly overrated imo. It tries so hard to be some sort of mix between Heretic and Quake, but Amid Evil is miles behind both games it takes inspiration from. I also got a bit fed up with the weak weapons which are only great when you use the Tome of Pow... soul mode. The map design also varies from great to infuriating.

XDDD
Lmao took me 1 minute to get into hard difficulty and find the portal to the 1st world
😂
They clearly did the hub world because the hub-style difficulty and episode selection from Quake was absolutely awesome and more games need to do it.

along with DUSK... thanks

It gets weird in the late levels but it's still one of my favourite games

Really looking forward to Amid Evil the Black Labyrinth. Loved this game back when i played in 2018.
The wait is endless the hype cannot be tamed
didn't know they make addon for this game
Hope it gets released faster than Ion Maiden Aftershock...
my personal favorite thing about the game is how every world has a completely new set of enemies.

A hybrid Retro/Modern aesthetic is something i love

You know, I would hesitate to call it a "Medieval" setting. In a way, it feels like an alien planet's fantasy.
Cant wait for Black Labyrinth and VR version. love it

Amid Evil plays great on the Steam Deck. It's basically made to be played handheld.
I literally was just looking at this game, and I agree completely, this game is a banger

I bought this game based on your recommendation
I love how 90s this looks. This is what I would imagine a game from the future would look like back in 1997. ❤
The star of torment is homing in soul mode.
I love the hub world its nice and chill place to relax btw levels and yeah this toghter with Dusk is a perfect combo 🌄🌅🌄
what's even more wild is the fact that the weapons are sprites
Thanks for the review... now I'm gonna have to go back and play it again 😅 might also make some music inspired by it... 🤔

One of those old school inspired FPS titles that's more than decent.
Everythings clicks here, takes some inspirations and adds more.
E6M3 legit made me cry it was such a great level with such a beautiful design
Saw this after seeing the VR trailer and now I can't wait to try that
If you want to see what this game is like, Dwars has a let's play of this game.

I love the retroness in grahics

Great game I finally just got the DLC on the steam sale
This game along with Hedon made me fall in love in boomer shooters all over again

there are secrets in the hub world. look it up
Not to burst your bubble, but there is a modern Hexen type game albeit still on the Doom engine. It’s called Hedon.
I share your love for this game FP. I really love it too. My favourite level is in your least favourite episode though oddly enough. E5M1 'Ruins of Rust' just blew me away. The darkness wasn't an issue for me.
I can't wait for a Nintendo Switch physical. I need.
This game just didn't click with me. I can't figure out why though lol. There's nothing I hate about it, but I get bored really fast when playing.

I really want this on my Switch. I know, I know...but I'm and emergency dispatcher and having something like this on a slow night is just the best.
Cool game!

who pissed in your cheerios, boomer?
Ah ha! first! Love this game btw! Glad to see you reviewing this gem
7:05 Something 'newy'?
You have a voice like the postal dude
are u a knock of version of gman
the powered up azure staff absolutely shreds bosses
There is only 1 thing about Amid Evil that I don't like - it's way too colorful
Perfectly boring.
