Andrew Rosa is cursed to play and, I dare say, love Castlevania (1999) for the Nintendo 64...
Oh, what a lovely night for a curse, or several.

0:40 I rented it when it came out in 1999.
6:11 Make sure your analog stick is working properly and hasn't worn down from Mario Party, you won't be able to make the long jumps if the analog stick isn't working.
6:19 The key is to take it slow and wait for the auto-camera to adjust to where it needs to be, before jumping to the next platform.
7:23 That's what the N64 did best, got you immersed in the (3D) worlds the game was trying to portray; almost like simulators. Unlike games today that are linear like a ride as oppose to a living breathing world, and hand-holdy with text-prompts everywhere (Press "X" to open door, you dumbfuck).
7:27 I never had a problem with the fog, that's just something for jag-offs to complain about, for the sake of complaining.
This is my favorite Castlevania game.
This game is underrated the intro is errie the music is fantasic.
This is one of my favorite N64 ever as a kid and even today. Something about this game just had me hooked. It gets a lot of flack though from what I noticed. Great review.
What people seem to forget is that the game reviewed well upon release. Lot of 8.0 out of 10 reviews. I'm a huge Castlevania fan and this game, and the follow up, are fantastic. The first time I seen Dracula's final form my jaw literally dropped in awe. Thanks for covering it!
I completed this game upon release, a time when most 3D games were blowing my mind. The title screen is indeed awesome for this game and I used to love fighting the giant skeleton at the beginning. The games controls, camera and some of its silly puzzles do work against it, but shit, I still played it and didn't absolutely hate it at the time. Great review.
Your editing is always just awesome. Spot on to my thoughts on this game. However I haven't played it since it was first released, but I remember liking it a lot. My dad owned a pawn shop around this time. New games were always flowing in just months after release from people dumping them for gas and cigarette money. I would borrow them from the shop, beat them and return it for the next. I played so many new released Saturn, PSX, N64 and Dreamcast games during this time, this game being one of the many. That intro song burned into my memory. On a side note, I'm almost positive it was Castlevania Lament of Innocence (PS2) that first explained the reason for the lighted torches/laterns with powerups hidden inside. Dracula put them there to help the odds of the Belmont's for the sport of him reaching the end to fight. Pretty lame...but ok.
Great review, man!
DUDE! Thank you. I really appreciate it. I know not everybody's down with the N64 games. Haha!
The graphics in this game look timeless and beautiful. The 3d games that came after the n64 versions lost the classic castlevania look imo.
Graphics were awful back when I first played this game in 1999 and looks awful now.
I honestly really want a direct sequel. The gameplay was fine I feel and the cast were the most fleshed out the classic era of the series ever saw (even if they were the final cast of the classic era).
Thanks for another great video.. They help me to destress!
My pleasure, cap'n!
Completely agree with you here. This game gets way too much negative attention from most die hard Castlevania fans. I own and play Bloodlines on Genesis, but I also play Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness on PS2 so I consider myself pretty open to new ideas in the same IP. Castlevania 64 is no different in my opinion. The camera does tend to be frustrating, but from what I see its not too different from MediEvil or Gex Enter the Gecko on the PS1 and I absolutely love those games so I can tolerate anything CV64 can dish out in that respect. Hopefully more people start to come back around to this game because its nowhere near as bad as people say it is. It's just got its own flaws like any other game would.
Yeah, many popular 2D franchises had difficult transitions into the third dimension, though Castlevania 64's were fairly minor. Not perfect, no, but there's still fun to be had here. I think a part of me still prefers to Legacy of Darkness though. While it feels like a more polished effort, some of the challenges are nightmarish.... Namely the final boss. Whoof!
@@MasterCastTV I have, sadly, not been given the opportunity to try Legacy of Darkness yet. It's been getting pricey lately, but I guess if I'm collecting 3DO and Neo Geo CD games then I shouldn't have an excuse, lol. I've heard that people gave LoD a warmer reception than the first game so I know I'll need to bite the bullet and get it for my N64 eventually.
They're both different games. Honestly, Legacy of Darkness does have all four characters as intended, and I've heard Reinhardt and Carrie's narratives are fairly similar. The issue I have is that you have to beat the game with Cornell first, then Henry. Only then will you have access to Reinhardt and Carrie. I get why that is (Cornell and Henry's adventures take place before Reinhardt and Carrie's), but it's a tad irritating.
Great review. Wil you do Legacy of Darkness also..?
Thank you! I'm definitely reviewing *Legacy of Darkness*, though it's taking much longer to beat. I'm stuck on Dracula's final form with Cornell, and I still have 3 other characters to play as.
Master-Cast TV haha thanks! Im gonna subscribe 🤗
I've always enjoyed the N64 Castlevanias (hopefully they make it to a collection for modern consoles one day). My favorite of the two was Legacy of Darkness.
Finally someone who agrees with me. Awesome review!!
I really enjoyed this game when it came out. Played the holy hell out of it and then also it's expansion/ sort of sequel Legacy of Darkness. I'm probably in the minority but it's one of the few games that I replayed so many times because I really enjoyed it. I remember reviews at the time had it reviewed as "mediocre" at best. Nice to see others also enjoyed it.
I don't remember too many reviews from back in the day, though some years back I started hearing, "Wow! Worst game ever!" Especially after the Angry Video Game Nerd's four-part Halloween special, so many folks jumped on that bandwagon. I get the game isn't for everyone, and that some fans have their own idea as to how the series should be. Still, this isn't even close to be the worst game ever, or even the worst of the franchise (Castlevania: The Adventure, for me).
Well looks like I'll have to try it again, I always wanted to like this game as I loved the previous entries but the jump to 3D always rubbed me the wrong way.
Amazing review as always!
Haven't played this one but I'd love to see you review Shadowman, released on the N64 around the same time - I think it's a stellar game and one of the best in the era in the action adventure genre. Curious to know what you think of it
Yeah, I got a bunch of games from a friend, this one stuck in my console for a while. It's janky, sure, but it has a real ~weird soul (which I like)
EXCELLENT review, although I would have loved a Legacy of Darkness review instead, and I say instead only because now since you've covered this, it's highly doubtful we'll get to see one on Legacy quite like anyone I've seen cover C64. Oh well, this was awesome anyway, thanks a bunch as always Andy.
Don't be so sure. I'm still playing Legacy of Darkness. It's a bit tougher than this one (boss characters are tougher to beat, and there's even more platform jumping), not to mention there's 4 characters to play as; not 2. Legacy of Darkness will come, because I actually have a lot to say about that one.
Great review as always. I love this game, even more the second one, basically the same game with little improvements. sure isn't perfect but I like the atmosphere, the way it mixes adventure and a little of maybe Resident Evil into it. Another game by Konami for the system that I enjoyed was Hybrid Heaven. That thing is pretty unique in some ways.
Thanks, man! I appreciate it. I picked up Hybrid Heaven a little over a month ago, but haven't really jumped into it yet. Looks and sounds gorgeous though.
Great review. Although I couldn't get into this game at all because of the derpy camera. That said, though, this was in the infancy of 3D gaming and maybe if they'd waited until 3D had been perfected it would've been a better game.
Thanks, man. It's not perfect by any means, though good fun if you can get past its quirks. I can't be that kind toward the developers though. LOL! I really feel the camera was an intentional hazard at times. Being able to manipulate the camera in some areas while locking it down in the more precarious sections seems very deliberate. Those bastards knew better. I say that as I shake my fist at them, as if they can see it, or even care if they did. 😂
You made me want this game AJ .
Just be careful you opt for Legacy of Darkness, its pseudo prequel/sequel update. They amp up the platform jumping something fierce, and Cornell is the only character available to you in the beginning. In addition, he gets to face the cheapest incarnation of Dracula I've ever seen.
Liked the review, and yes i agreed with you. The game has problems especialy with the camera, but if you take that out, whats lefts is a good game. I think if this game didnt have the castlevania name it would be more successfull
Symphony of the Night will always be my favorite Castlevania game but the 64's games are pretty good IMO
This game had so much potential and when it hit I got it the first day. It's unfortunate that Konami couldn't get to grips with a 3d Castlevania at the time. Everything was moving to 3d and many times in those days it wasn't for the better. I remember absolutely hating it and shelving it after fighting with it for just shy of 3 hours.
I really wanted a new Castlevania especially after picking this up...I decided to go back to the game store to see if there were any other "like" Castlevania titles I may have missed. I find it important to note that I had all three machines (Saturn, PlayStation, and N64) so I felt I just might find something (this was also pre-Dreamcast or pre- 9/9/99). What I hadn't realized was that it was past 9:00 PM and EB was closed. This forced me to drive to Walmart with the hopes of finding something of value for one of these machines. Thankfully, the store I used to go to was always stocked with the newest and best games (love city life) available. My best friend (roommate) and I typically would hit this Walmart at 3:00 AM every Friday to buy a new game.
I felt my chances were at least 50/50 but I was now open to just about anything. I walked past the poor bargain bin or what used to be the Sega Saturn section and straight to the PlayStation section (the PlayStation was always getting reams of games) and what do I see?
Castlevania Symphony of the Night sitting all by itself at the bottom of the case! It was sitting flat on the bottom of the case and didn't have a home yet. I remember thinking...what the Hell is this and where was I when this dropped (The answer Metal Gear Solid)?! I couldn't believe I actually found another Castlevania title and for 30 bucks! Too think I almost passed it up when I saw that it was in 2d. Thankfully, I decided to pick it up...it was just what the doctor ordered. I wound up finding a copy of Burning Rangers in the bargain bin that night as well (I paid $15.00 for it).
I feel like this game got a lot of undeserved flak. Sure, it wasn't symphony of the night, but it was good on its own merits. The only thing that I really took issue with was the camera. It could be a bit cumbersome. I still enjoyed this game a lot back when I had it
Skeletons on Motorcycles in 1852!😂
Late 1800 did have actual early stages of motorcycle development. Who know, Dracula probably great engineer.
@@HsienKoMeiLingFormerYANG 😂
Ive dusted off my N64 a week ago, and im on the hunt for this game. I bought it back in the day and didnt like it very much, but after videos like this i want to give it another shot.
at least the music is great
When is the Legacy of Darkness review coming out? 😇
When I can beat Dracula as Cornell. LOL!
Master-Cast TV haha just buy a lot of beef and med kits. Also. There is a secret spot behind the dracula tower. Just go around it for a whip upgrade before the battle. When in his final form just go full beastmode on him. Only time in the game when it matters.
I'll have to start over, because I don't have enough hearts. Found the secret spot when I first made it to the tower, and didn't provide much help. That final form is beyond tough for me. I hadn't read up too much on Legacy of Darkness before I started the game, wanting to be surprised. I assumed Dracula would remain the same, but... Damn! Was I fuckin' wrong!
Master-Cast TV haha, how is the progress going? Drac finished🤗? Just one question. How do you explain that if you jump as Cornell in that coffin in the villa you end up at the castle wall? It bugged me for almost 20 years. I can inderstand that you end up in a cave of sewer underneath the castle. But if I jump down (in the coffin) how do I end up at a castle wall🙈. Please help😅
I love the intro of this game, but I just can't get past the clunky control/camera combo. Castlevania is supposed to smooth and easy to get into.
Simply Sherbert me too I didn't play any castlevania before this except the 3rd gameboy game so I thought the series just sucked until I discovered the good games in recent years
Still that intro is still cool as fuuuuck
I really enjoy both this and legacy of darkness and have played through both of them multiple times. Probably not the best castlevania games ( for me that has to be rondo of blood) but definitely not as bad as some reviews say.
It's hard for me to say which is the best at this point. The series has gone in a few different directions and there's something to like - if not love - about all of them. If I want straight-forward action/platform gaming, I tend to prefer Bloodlines or Super Castlevania IV (I've yet to play Rondo of Blood). Metroid-vania titles, I like Nocturne in the Moonlight. If I'm wanting 3D exploration, I'll go with Legacy of Darkness (playing it now with Henry).
The slow pace and dodgy platforming make this very much not a game for me. It's clear that there are about a million worse 3D action titles from around this same time, though. By any reasonable standard, it's good for what it is.
I really hated the game
After this many years i think this is ok
If theres one thing that N64 was good at it was making ugly ass broke gameplay platformers that had the potential to ruin a franchise.
